Thermo Fisher Scientific: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_002952_gc_ms_isq_environmental_an002952_na_en_9738609742.pdf">Adhering to U.S. EPA Method 524.2 for the analysis of volatile organic compounds in drinking water</a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul>Goal: Demonstration of a routine analytical method that meets the requirements outlined in U.S. EPA 524.2 for the quantitation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water, using the Teledyne LABS Tekmar Lumin Purge and Trap (P&amp;T) concentrator paired with the AQUATek LVA autosampler system along with a Thermo Scientific™ ISQ™ 7610 MS system coupled with a Thermo Scientific™ TRACE™ 1610 gas chromatograph (GC) and Thermo Scientific™ Chromeleon™ Chromatography Data System (CDS). Method linearity, method detection limit (MDL), precision, and accuracy were assessed to evaluate method performance.Introduction: Analytical testing labs play a crucial role in monitoring surface, ground, and drinking water for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Common by-products in the processing of household and industrial products, VOCs can contaminate water sources, potentially harming the environment and public health. To safeguard against this, labs use the U.S. EPA Method 524.21 to test water for the presence of VOCs, including four trihalomethane disinfection by-products. This procedure utilizes Purge and Trap (P&amp;T) procedures to remove VOCs with high volatility and low water solubility from water samples, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).Conclusion: The TRACE 1610 GC, the ISQ 7610 system, and the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T with the AQUATek LVA autosampler system together offer benefits for executing U.S. EPA Method 524.2. The Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T concentrator enhances sample throughput through efficient trap cooling and moisture control, thus reducing peak interference and extending GC column life. The ISQ 7610 system’s VPI and ExtractaBrite ion source allow ionization source and analytical column replacement without venting the instrument, ensuring minimal downtime, and the XLXR™ detector offers extended linear dynamic range. The collective technology addresses routine VOC analysis challenges, ensuring robust sensitivity, maximized output, and consistent method compliance. The ISQ 7610 system equipped with the VPI coupled with the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T and the AQUATek LVA autosampler exceeds all the requirements outlined in U.S. EPA Method 524.2 for analysis of VOCs in drinking water:<ul><li>Excellent linearity for all compounds was demonstrated with the %RSD of the calibration response factors passing all method requirements.</li><li>MDL and precision for seven 0.5 ppb standards showed no interference from excessive water and produced very reproducible results. The average MDL result for all 83 target compounds was 0.06 ppb with a precision of 4.06%.</li><li>The precision for n=31 samples over 189 injections displayed &lt;30% RSD accuracy for all compounds as the method requires. The average precision for all 83 target compounds and 2 surrogates gave a %RSD of 6.43% with an accuracy of 98% recovering the compounds. Individually, 4-bromofluorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene-d4 had a 7.68% RSD with an accuracy of 98% and 4.95% RSD and an accuracy of 95%, respectively, over 189 injections and almost four days of uninterrupted analysis.</li></ul><h4>2. ASTM D5501 provides a test method for determination of the concentrations of ethanol and methanol in fuels for concentrations of ethanol from 20 to 100 wt% and concentrations of methanol from 0.01 to 0.6 wt%.In this Application News article, measurements of the purity of ethanol containing gasoline as a denaturant as specified in ASTM D5501 were carried out with a Brevis GC-2050 gas chromatograph, using helium and hydrogen asthe carrier gases.ConclusionEthanol purity tests were carried out as provided in ASTM D5501 using a Brevis GC-2050 gas chromatograph. The splitter linearity test showed no inlet discrimination so that accurate qualitative analysis could be made for denatured fuel ethanol with the wide boiling range components regardless of whether helium or hydrogen was used as the carrier gas.<h4>3. Agilent Technologies: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_aldehydes_beer_pal3_autosampler_5977c_gc_msd_5994_7633en_agilent_1fe3b8541c.pdf">Analysis of Aldehydes in Beer by Agilent PAL3 Autosampler and 5977C GC/MSD</a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul>AbstractThis application note describes a method for quantitation of four aldehydes (hexanal, furfural, phenylacetaldehyde, and trans-2-nonenal) responsible for off-flavors in beer using an Agilent 8890/5977C GC/MSD with an Agilent PAL3 (SPME) autosampler. The method used fully automated, solvent-free extraction and on-fiber derivatization. The aldehyde compounds were derivatized with the derivatization agent O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFBHA) using the on-fiber derivatization procedure. The derivatization agent was first adsorbed onto an Agilent 65 µm PDMS/DVB fiber. Next, the fiber was inserted into a 20 mL headspace vial containing a 2 mL beer sample with agitation at 60 °C for 30 minutes. Both extraction and derivatization procedures were automatically performed using the PAL3 autosampler. The method demonstrated excellent sensitivity, with detection limits of 0.0009 µg/L for hexanal, 0.52 µg/L for furfural, 0.015 µg/L for phenylacetaldehyde, and 0.003 µg/L for trans-2-nonenal. The limits of the quantification for the four compounds were 0.003, 1.72, 0.05, and 0.01&nbsp;µg/L, respectively. The four aldehydes were successfully quantified in four beer samples purchased from a supermarket. Good repeatability was demonstrated with RSD &lt; 4.9% based on three replicate injections of the four beer samples for all four&nbsp;aldehydes.ConclusionThis application note describes the quantitative analysis of four aldehydes (hexanal, furfural, phenylacetaldehyde, and trans-2-nonenal) responsible for off-flavors in beer using an Agilent 8890/5977C GC/MSD with a PAL3 (SPME) autosampler. This method offers the advantages of full automation, rapid analysis, solvent-free extraction, and on-fiber derivatization. With this automated solution, excellent sensitivity was demonstrated for the detection of hexanal (0.0009 μg/L), furfural (0.52 μg/L), phenylacetaldehyde (0.015&nbsp;μg/L), and trans-2-nonenal (0.003 μg/L). Four different brands of beer were analyzed, with hexanal detected in the range of 0.45 to 1.56 μg/L, furfural in the range of 6.62&nbsp;to 50.37 μg/L, phenylacetaldehyde in the range of 6.64 to 10.51&nbsp;μg/L, and trans-2-nonenal in the range of 0.031 to 0.062&nbsp;μg/L. Good repeatability was demonstrated with RSD&nbsp;&lt;&nbsp;4.9% based on three replicate injections of the four beer samples for all four aldehydes.<h4>4. LECO: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/hf_acs21_lpss_284_c35134b9cd.pdf">Combining GC with MS and Olfactory Detection for a Variety of Food, Flavor, and Fragrance Analyses</a></h4><ul><li>Poster / ACS</li></ul>INTRODUCTIONGas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) is an important tool for the characterization of a wide range of food, flavor, and fragrance samples. The components most likely to contribute to the aroma of a sample tend to be volatile and semi-volatile analytes, and GC-MS is well-suited for this type of analysis. Complex samples are effectively separated into the individual analyte components with GC. Time-of-Flight (TOF) MS detection provides important information towards the identification of these potentially important components of the sample with full m/z range data that can be library searched and that is also optimal for deconvolution algorithms. The incorporation of olfactory (O) detection with this data is particularly helpful for connecting the identified features with their contributions to the overall aroma or flavor. This type of sensory directed analysis highlights regions of interest and leads to specific analytes of interest for a focused review of the data. This combination of tools can separate and identify analytes and then determine those that are most important for contributing to the sensory characteristics of the sample. A variety of samples were analyzed with this combination of tools, and the benefits of using the information together are highlighted.CONCLUSIONSIn this work, the combination of a GC separation with MS and O for detection provided a powerful and efficient analytical platform to isolate individual analytes, identify those isolated analytes, and connect them to their sensory impacts. The olfactory data allowed for sensory directed analysis. In each case, the GC separation and full m/z range TOFMS data were crucial for determining the identification of the feature responsible for the characteristic aroma. This collection of tools was demonstrated for the characterization of the most aroma impacting components of a nutmeg essential oil, the distinction of sensory differences in cilantro, and the determination of an off-odor in beer.

This application note aims to develop a mid-infrared (mid-IR) method using an Agilent DialPath transmission module to measure the concentration of MEA-triazine in aqueous solutions. Metrohm: <style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_122_download_da32ea61a1.pdf">Quantification of water in lactose with the OMNIS NIRS Analyzer</a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul><h5>Fast, non-destructive determination of water with NIRS</h5>Lactose is an important pharmaceutical product. Approximately 60% to 70% of pharmaceutical dosage forms contain lactose [1], and it is one of the largest pharmaceutical excipients by volume. Lactose can be used as a bulk filler for pharmaceutical tablets, as a binder to provide more strength to a dosage form, and it can also be added to facilitate the flow of a formulation during the production process. Moisture in lactose is undesirable at high levels as it causes the material to become sticky and bind to itself, forming hard clusters that may be difficult to break apart. USP specifies the water content range in lactose monohydrate from 4.5 % to 5.5 % [2]. The analysis of water in lactose is usually done with time-consuming methods. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a faster alternative. This Application Note shows the determination of water content in lactose with NIRS.CONCLUSIONThis Application Note demonstrates the feasibility to determine water content in lactose quickly and easily. NIR spectroscopy offers users a fast, cost-effective, and highly accurate alternative to other standard testing methods. Additionally, NIRS analysis is nondestructive, completely reagent-free, and gives results in only a few seconds.

Effective Use of EI Mass Spectral Databases in Unknown Identifications - Part II: Structure Searches with MS Search and Using MS Interpreter

Analytical Scientists at the University of Amsterdam’s Van ‘t Hoff institute for Molecular Sciences together with colleagues from TNO have demonstrated for the first time that chemical warfare agents react with plant proteins to form stable protein adducts. These ‘biomarkers’ could still be detected in the living plants, as well as in dried leaves, up to three months after the actual exposure. First author is Mirjam de Bruin-Hoegée who performed the research as part of her PhD study under supervision of Arian van Asten, professor of Forensic Analytical Chemistry and On Scene Chemical Analysis at the University of Amsterdam and one of the directors of the Amsterdam Center for Forensic Science and Medicine (CLHC). De Bruin-Hoegée cooperated with researchers at TNO Defence, Safety and Security in Rijswijk, and with scientists of various member states of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) as part of its “Plant Biomarker Challenge”. The OPCW was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013 for its comprehensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons.<h4>Abstract of the paper</h4>The continuing threats of military conflicts and terrorism may involve the misuse of chemical weapons. The present study aims to use environmental samples to find evidence of the release of such agents at an incident scene. A novel approach was developed for identifying protein adducts in plants.Basil (Ocimum basilicum), bay laurel leaf (Laurus nobilis) and stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) were exposed to 2.5 to 150 mg m−3 sulfur mustard, 2.5 to 250 mg m−3 sarin, and 0.5 to 25 g m−3 chlorine gas. The vapors of the selected chemicals were generated under controlled conditions in a dedicated set-up. As a result of sarin exposure, the o-isopropyl methylphosphonic acid adduct to tyrosine could be analyzed, and after sulfur mustard exposure the N1- and N3-HETE-histidine adducts were identified. The lowest vapor exposure levels for which these plant adducts could be detected, were 2.5 mg m−3 for sarin, 50 mg m−3 for chlorine and 12.5 mg m−3 for sulfur mustard. Additionally, protein adducts following a liquid exposure of only 2 nmol Novichock A-234, 0.4 nmol sarin and 0.2 nmol sulfur mustard could still be observed. For both vapor and liquid exposure, the amount of adduct formed increased with the level of exposure. In all cases synthetic reference standards were used for unambiguous identification.The window of opportunity for investigation of agent exposure through the analysis of plant material was found to be remarkably long. Even three months after the actual exposure, the biomarkers could still be detected in the living plants, as well as in dried leaves. <h3>The Science</h3>At the subatomic level, electrons move so fast that attosecond strobe pulses are required to capture their motion. Researchers performed the first all X-ray attosecond-pump attosecond-probe experiment in condensed phase to observe electron motion, defining a method for spectral snapshots free of nuclear motion. The researchers established a technique called all X-ray attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (AX-ATAS)—which involves synchronized attosecond X-ray pulse pairs—to study the electronic response to valence ionization in liquid water. It provides evidence that the splitting is due to dynamics and not two structural motifs, as previously thought. The methodology also enables future studies of the origin and evolution of reactive species produced by radiation-induced processes. As these processes are initiated by electronic motion at attosecond timescales, this technique is critical for understanding ultrafast reactions.<h3>Summary</h3>The all X-ray attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (AX-ATAS) experiment was performed on liquid water using synchronized attosecond X-ray pulse pairs from the Linac Coherent Light Source operating in a harmonic configuration, omega (ω) and 2ω. The X-rays were focused on a thin, flat sheet of liquid water. The ω pump pulse ionized the valence band of liquid water, and the 2ω probe pulse interrogated the electronic structure.The researchers’ model showed that the polarization response in condensed-phase media observed with AX-ATAS is confined to the sub-femtosecond timescale, such that the resulting experimental spectra are free from nuclear motion. The researchers were then able to model the X-ray absorption spectra of the instantaneous post-ionization electronic structure using multi-reference restricted-active-space configuration interaction with fixed nuclear geometry. The findings, reported in the journal Science,&nbsp;provide a new window into the electronic structure of molecules in the liquid phase on a timescale previously unattainable with X-rays. The new technique reveals the immediate electronic response when a target is hit with an X-ray, an important step in understanding the effects of prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation. This research opens the doors for future work with more complex radiation-induced chemical solutions, like those found in legacy nuclear tank waste.Experimental work used the resources of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. "I like the non-violence of the environmental chemistry field. We're trying to help society," says analytical chemist Martin Palušák from the Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation, who is currently working on methods for reusing metals from mine water.Martin grew up in the popularity of Jurassic Park. He wanted to travel the world and discover dinosaurs, but over time he found chemistry and physics more interesting. "My chemist and I went to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/62">Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry</a> of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/10">CAS</a>. We went to a lab where they were studying the structures of proteins. It was in the basement, with an old couch against the wall and a shelf full of fantasy books next to it. And I thought, I have to do this. That's when I decided that I wanted to be a scientist," recalls Martin, who returned to the Institute of Chemical Biology as part of his bachelor's thesis. "It was a valuable experience, there are real experts working there," he says. In our case, for example, by treating water better or using neglected resources."The fact that Martin is passionate about chemistry is evidenced by the fact that he performed chemical experiments at schools and then taught organic chemistry and ran laboratories at the PhD level. "When I think about it, it was definitely an important experience. It made me realize how much I didn't know. Nowadays, teaching is no longer compulsory, but I think everyone who wants to work in a university should try it as a career."Did his childhood dream come true? He travels the world and discovers. Not dinosaurs, but analytical methods.From the lab straight to the longboardAnd what's Martin up to after work? He rides from the peaks of the Jizera Mountains on a longboard. He has no brakes, he controls everything with his body. "Now I take more care of myself for my family. It is a prestigious international Horizon Europe Twinning project. The main idea is to form a team and exchange know-how through the world.And what is the project about? The Czech Republic has been one of the main producers of uranium in recent years. After mining, there are many sites with high levels of radioactive substances or rare heavy metals. However, these can still be considered strategic raw materials. "The first problem that SURRI is addressing is how to clean up the mine water. This is because a huge amount of money is spent to ensure that contaminated water does not flow into the environment. But by cleaning the water, we concentrate strategic materials such as uranium or heavy metals. The next problem is how to access and reuse these valuable resources. The options are biological or chemical. I am working on electrochemical methods."Extracting metals from mine waterTo a layman, what Martin is doing can be described as having two magnets that can attract certain chemicals, but instead of magnetism, electricity is used. "Our partner, the University of Southampton, has a lot of experience in this and that helps us transfer their methods to our conditions. And it was an English university that was almost excluded because of Brexit. And then we have partnerships with Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Granada, and in the Czech Republic we work with the national company Diamo. "Ideally, SURRI will be followed by another project that would integrate our technologies into site-specific operations. I would like to be involved in this. I appreciate the fact that I write interesting projects," Martin explains enthusiastically."For example, when I came from Prague, I didn't know how to write projects. At CXI TUL, I was immediately involved in all the processes and they helped me get collaborations going pretty quickly. So far, my projects haven't worked out well. I am at the beginning of my career. But I'm still trying. It's probably best to take the plunge and not be afraid to work on it again and again. That's what I'm free to do here."For CXI TUL and across half the countryAnd where does Martin see himself in five years? "I would like to go back to my PhD studies, but now we are about to have another child, so it will be slower," he calculates, adding in one breath that he would like to stay at CXI TUL, simply because he is working with leading capacities in the field of environmental chemistry. "For example, there are scientists working here who do not hesitate to commute to Liberec from Prague every day," he says.
