Regulatory laboratories often require sensitive and robust analytical methods capable of detecting these compounds at trace levels in environmental samples. USEPA Method 8081B is commonly used for the analysis of organochlorine pesticides using GC/ECD due to the strong electron-capturing properties of halogenated compounds.<sup>1</sup>&nbsp;</p><p>Large volume injection (LVI) techniques can significantly improve detection sensitivity by introducing more analyte mass into the GC system. However, successful LVI implementation requires careful optimization to minimize solvent flooding, peak distortion, and poor chromatographic performance. The Agilent Multimode Inlet (MMI) provides a flexible solvent vent mode that simplifies LVI method development while maintaining analytical robustness.&nbsp;</p><p>In this work, an Agilent GC/ECD system equipped with MMI was evaluated for the quantitative analysis of 31&nbsp;organochlorine pesticides using two analytical columns <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=DB-5ms&amp;sources=GCMS_EN"><strong>DB-5ms</strong></a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;sources=GCMS_EN&amp;search=DB-1701"><strong>DB-1701</strong></a>. The use of two columns follows the recommendations of USEPA Method 8081, which requires compound identification based on a primary column to be confirmed on a second column with a different stationary phase to improve analyte identification confidence. Calibration performance, unknown sample quantification, IDL determination, and multiday stability performance were&nbsp;assessed.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion</strong></h4><p>The Agilent GC/ECD system equipped with a Multimode Inlet successfully demonstrated robust quantitative analysis of 31 organochlorine pesticides using large volume injection technology. The solvent vent LVI approach enabled high sensitivity while maintaining good chromatographic performance and excellent reproducibility.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>Key performance highlights included:&nbsp;</strong></h5><ul><li>Successful dual-column setup meeting EPA 8081 confirmatory identification requirements</li><li>Excellent calibration linearity with R² values greater than&nbsp;0.992&nbsp;</li><li>IDLs of 2.39 ppb or lower for all analytes&nbsp;</li><li>Excellent retention time repeatability with %RSD ≤ 0.07%&nbsp;</li><li>Stable multiday peak area reproducibility with %RSD ≤&nbsp;7.83%&nbsp;</li></ul><p>The combination of Agilent GC/ECD instrumentation, MMI solvent vent technology, and optimized large volume injection workflow provides an effective solution for routine environmental monitoring of organochlorine pesticides.</p><h3><strong>2. LECO: Determination of PFAS in Environmental Waters Using DHS-GCxGC-TOFMS</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/PEGBT_4_D_PFAS_ENVIRONMENTAL_WATER_203_821_721_815a93c9bc.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a vast group of synthetic organic compounds, with over 15,000 known variants. Their structure, characterized by strong carbon-fluorine bonds and amphipathic properties, makes them highly resistant to chemical 1 and biological degradation. These unique features led to extensive industrial and domestic applications, including coatings, 1 textiles, firefighting foams, packaging, and cosmetics. However, their persistence and mobility in the environment, along with their bioaccumulative nature, have raised serious health and ecological concerns. PFAS have been detected in human blood, breast milk, and umbilical cords, and studies since the 2000s have linked them to cancer, immune dysfunction, and endocrine 2 disruption.&nbsp;</p><p>Their recognition as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention in 2001 has prompted global efforts 3 to limit their release. Yet treating PFAS-contaminated water remains challenging, particularly for short-chain congeners that are not included in conventional removal methods. Monitoring is further complicated by their low concentrations and the interference of complex sample matrices. In addition, traditional sample preparation techniques like liquid-liquid extraction 4,5 (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) are laborious, solvent intensive, and prone to contamination. In this context, the use of thermal desorption tubes (TDTs) is well suited for trace-level compounds. They enable effective preconcentration while 6 minimizing solvent use and sample handling, reducing the risk of contamination.&nbsp;</p><p>This research aimed to leverage dynamic headspace extraction (DHS) combined with thermal desorption as an alternative for the extraction of volatile and semi-volatile PFAS in water samples. Advanced analytical techniques such as gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOFMS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC)-TOFMS were used to enhance resolution, sensitivity, and selectivity.</p><h4><strong>Experimental</strong></h4><p>Both GC-TOFMS and GCxGC-TOFMS analyses were performed on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/37"><strong>Pegasus BT 4D GCxGC-TOFMS system</strong></a> (LECO Corporation, MI, USA) equipped with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8890&amp;sources=GCMS_EN"><strong>Agilent 8890 GC</strong></a> and an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/library?mainauthorItems=15&amp;search=RTC-PAL&amp;sources=GCMS_EN"><strong>RTC-PAL autosampler</strong></a> capable of automated handling of desorption tubes by employing a Capping/Decapping tool from GL Sciences (Eindhoven, The Netherlands). Sample injections were carried out using an Optic-4 multimode inlet (GL Science, Eindhoven, The Netherlands) with Peltier cooler and a liner exchanger (i.e., LINEX). The GC system was also equipped with a cryogenic trap, used for the secondary trapping/release stage. ® 7 The instrument parameters are summarized in Table 1. Data were acquired and processed using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/41"><strong>ChromaTOF software</strong></a>.</p><h4><strong>Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The use of dynamic head-space extraction and thermal-desorption GC(xGC)-TOFMS using the LECO Pegasus BT 4D enabled the determination of nine volatile PFAS targets, including fluorotelomer alcohols, acrylates, and alkyl sulfonamides. The method achieved sensitive and precise quantification, with LOQs down to 6.6 ng L⁻¹ and repeatability between 1.4-7.9% RSD. When compared with 1D GC, the enhanced sensitivity of GCxGC allowed reliable detection of PFAS even at much lower concentrations. Moreover, the superior separation power of GCxGC supported effective non-target screening, enabling the identification of additional environmentally relevant compounds in an industrial water case study.&nbsp;</p><p>The combination of DHS-TD with GC-TOFMS, and particularly with GCxGC, provides a versatile platform that ensures robust quantification, high sensitivity, and expanded capabilities for both targeted PFAS analysis and non-targeted screening, supporting its application in environmental monitoring. Given the presence of hundreds of molecules, many of which are still poorly known and characterized, future studies will extend the workflow by including GC(xGC)-HRMS, which represents an important step toward a more comprehensive characterization of this emerging class of (semi-)volatile contaminants and will support the discovery of unknown congeners.</p><h3><strong>3. They are known for their acid catalytic properties, sulfonamide intermediates and as agents to enhance solubility through salt formation. However, as the reactions progress, they form their respective esters, which are well-known potent genotoxic impurities (GTIs), that act as DNA-alkylating agents in biological systems posing mutagenic and carcinogenic risks even at trace levels. Hence, it is necessary to categorize, qualify, and control these impurities to limit the potential carcinogenic risks, as mentioned in ICH M7(R2).&nbsp;</p><p>Nintedanib Esylate API belongs to a family of kinase inhibitors, used primarily to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). It acts as a triple angiokinase inhibitor which targets receptors involved in pulmonary fibrosis. The synthesis of the API often involves the reaction of Nintedanib free base with Ethane Sulfonic Acid in a process called as salification. The salt formed in the form of yellow crystals is used further in formulations to enhance stability as well as solubility. The by-product of this reaction, often due to presence of residual short-chain alcohols, is Methyl Ethane Sulfonate (MES).</p><p>As per the ICH M7(R2) guidelines, a TTC (Threshold of Toxicological Concern) based acceptable intake of a mutagenic impurity of 1.5 μg/day which can be used for most pharmaceuticals as a default value, to derive an acceptable limit for control [2,3]. Nintedanib Esylate is supposed to be administered orally. Strength of the Nintedanib Esylate API in most of the medicines is 150 mg per capsule and prescribed dose is twice in a day. [4]</p><p>Irrespective of the limit calculated from maximum daily dose, Shimadzu has worked upon developing a method for quantification of MES at lowest possible detection so that it will be beneficial for the concern pharmaceuticals even if daily dose exceeds 0.3 g/day.</p><h4><strong>Need for a robust analytical method&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Nintedanib Esylate API shows high solubility in acidic pH of about 3. To inject acidic aqueous media into GC via direct injection technique creates the risk of very high vapor pressure at the injector port. Further, its entry into the column might affect the stationary phase, thereby drastically reducing the shelf-life of the column. As a result, sensitivity of the analytical method becomes questionable. In order to overcome the said issues, it is imperative to develop a robust analytical method pertaining to high sensitivity, repeatability and reproducibility of the results.</p><p>In this regard, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=8050"><strong>Shimadzu GCMS-TQ8050 NX triple quadrupole</strong></a><strong> </strong>system with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=HS-20+NX"><strong>HS-20 NX</strong></a> (Trap) as shown in Figure 2, was used to develop a selective and sensitive method for the determination of Methyl Ethane Sulfonate in Nintedanib Esylate API at trace levels.&nbsp;</p><p>Further, development and partial validation were performed at significantly lower concentrations which clearly evidences the capability of instrument and suitability of the developed method.&nbsp;</p><p>To evaluate the method suitability, few validation parameters were performed such as system suitability, LOQ precision, Linearity and accuracy in terms of spike recovery. KNAUER: Efficient separation of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) from oil matrices using GPC</strong></h3><ul><li>Technical note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/VTN_00_XX_knauer_applichrom_gpc_f1d7f1a236.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Phthalates are chemical compounds primarily used as plasticizers in polymers to enhance the flexibility and elasticity of materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) [1]. Since plasticizers are not covalently bound to the polymer chains, they have the potential to leach into the contacting media and contribute to contamination [2]. With the widespread and increasing use of plastic materials, the risk of phthalate release and human exposure continues to rise. As a result, and due to their potentially harmful effects on human health, phthalates have attracted growing scientific and regulatory attention in recent years [1]. Oil-rich food products can leach lipophilic phthalates from their packaging [3]. Throughout the production and packaging process, polymeric components such as tubing, containers, and caps may serve as potential sources of contamination. For the analysis of phthalates in such oil matrices, sample cleanup is an essential step. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), based on sizeexclusion principles, is widely applied as an effective cleanup technique prior to subsequent analytical determination.</p><h4><strong>MATERIALS &amp; METHODS</strong></h4><p>The samples were dissolved in the eluent mixture and filtered through a 0.45 µm PTFE filter prior to analysis. For both olive oil and canola oil, an additional sample spiked with DEHP was prepared and likewise filtered before analysis. Chromatographic analysis was performed using an isocratic method with an eluent composition of ethyl acetate/heptane (50:50 v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. Detection was carried out by UV absorbance at 254 nm. The injection volume was 8 µL using a full-loop injection mode. The column temperature was maintained at 25°C. Separation was achieved on an <strong>AppliChrom® OleoSep column </strong>(10 µm, 300 × 8 mm). The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/1630"><strong>AZURA® Semi Preparative GPC System</strong></a> was used.</p><h4><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></h4><p>GPC sample preparation is an effective approach for separating phthalates from high-molecular-weight matrices such as edible oils. In this study, the successful separation of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) from three different oil samples was demonstrated. Based on these results, it can be assumed that other phthalates with lower molecular weights (&lt; 390 Da) can also be effectively separated under same conditions. The KNAUER AZURA® GPC semi preparative system (Fig. 4) in combination with the AppliChrom® OleoSep GPC column provides a robust and efficient setup for sample preparation in phthalate analysis, offering rapid separation, high resolution, and minimal solvent consumption due to the short analysis time.</p><h3><strong>2. Shimadzu: Analysis of Chloride and Sulfate Ions in Bioethanol Using the </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/lcms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Nexera+IC"><strong>Nexera IC Ion Chromatograph</strong></a></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/an_01_01211_en_55cbf3e64f.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><h5><strong>User Benefits</strong></h5><ul><li>Analysis of chloride and sulfate ions in fuel ethanol can be conducted in accordance with ASTM D7319-221) .</li><li>Accurate quantitative determination, exhibiting excellent linearity and repeatability, can be achieved at concentration levels significantly below the limits specified by the ASTM criteria.</li></ul><p>First-generation bioethanol produced from raw materials such as corn and sugarcane has been utilized to achieve carbon neutrality. However, research and development for second-generation bioethanol produced from non-food, cellulose-based raw materials is also underway to avoid competition with food crops. In Japan, eight companies, including Toyota Motor Corporation, have formed the “Research Association of Biomass Innovation for Next Generation Automobile Fuels” (raBit) to advance research on next-generation bioethanol technologies. Shimadzu participates as a supporting member and promotes research and development through analytical technology cooperation.</p><p>&nbsp;It is known that the presence of chloride and sulfate ions in fuel ethanol can form engine residue, leading to reduced engine performance. ASTM D4806-252) specifies fuel ethanol quality as criterion of chloride ion must not exceed 6.7 mg/kg and that of sulfate ion must not exceed 4 mg/kg. ASTM D7319-22 includes test methods for chloride and sulfate ions in fuel ethanol using ion chromatography.&nbsp;</p><p>In this application, we present an example of the analysis of chloride and sulfate ions in bioethanol using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/lcms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Nexera+IC"><strong>Nexera IC</strong></a> in accordance with ASTM D7319-22.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion</strong></h4><p>Chloride and sulfate ions in bioethanol were determined using a Nexera IC system in accordance with ASTM D7319-22. The method offers high sensitivity, linearity, and repeatability, enabling reliable quantification at concentrations well below ASTM-specified limits, thus supporting effective quality control and regulatory compliance of fuel ethanol.</p><h3><strong>3. LC-MS analysis is routinely applied at the intact protein and subunit levels to assess molecular mass, heterogeneity, and structural integrity. Enzymatic subunit generation, such as IdeS digestion, enables targeted domain-level characterization while reducing analytical complexity compared to full peptide mapping. Achieving high-performance reversed-phase separations across intact and subunit-level workflows remains challenging, as chromatographic columns optimized for intact proteins often compromise performance of smaller subunits. Consequently, multiple columns are required to support comprehensive mAb characterization.&nbsp;</p><p>In this study, we evaluate a reversed-phase separation column based on a novel 2.5 μm monodisperse supermacroporous (SMP) polymeric stationary phase for unified LC-MS analysis of monoclonal antibodies under intact, reduced, and IdeSdigested conditions. The SMP resin’s uniform particle size and highly accessible pore structure enable efficient separation of both small and large analytes, including intact mAbs, reduced subunits (LC and HC), and IdeS-generated fragments such as scFc and F(ab′)₂. Using the SurePac Protein RP MDi column, baseline separation of these species was achieved within a 10- minute gradient, providing a fast, all-in-one LC-MS approach for mAb variant characterization.</p><h4><strong>Materials and methods</strong></h4><h5><strong>Instruments&nbsp;</strong></h5><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/744"><strong>Thermo Scientific Vanquish Horizon UHPLC system</strong></a>; <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/401"><strong>Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris 480 mass spectrometer</strong></a> with <strong>Thermo Scientific OptaMax NG ion source</strong>.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>Data analysis&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The UHPLC system with mass spectrometer were operated with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/1758"><strong>Thermo Scientific Xcalibur 4.7 software</strong></a>. Full MS spectra of intact mAbs and mAb fragments were analyzed using Thermo Scientific Freestyle 1.8 and BioPharma Finder 5.4 software that utilizes the ReSpect and Xtract algorithms for molecular mass determination.</p><h4><strong>Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><ul><li>A SurePac Protein RP column enabled a rapid (10 min) separation of mAb LC, HC, scFc, and F(ab′)₂ fragments, with major proteoforms identified by mass agreement.&nbsp;</li><li>The SurePac Protein RP column supports comprehensive intact and subunit-level mAb characterization in a single workflow, with strong separation performance across mAb fragments.</li></ul><h3><strong>4. Waters Corporation / AOAC: IMPROVED PURIFICATION OUTCOMES FOR PROBLEMATIC COMPOUNDS USING AN INERT COLUMN WITH POLAR SORBENT</strong></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/720009616_AOAC_f65ea1b771.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><div><div><section><div><div><div><div><div><div><p>Whether the goal is to obtain enough intermediate for the next step in a synthetic scheme, to polish a final product, or to create a suitable standard for compound identification, preparative liquid chromatography remains a primary technique for isolating compounds from complex mixtures. Recovering the target compound at the desired purity and yield in the least amount of time is of utmost importance.&nbsp;</p><p>Polar targets that do not retain, or “sticky” compounds that seemingly disappear on the column are two groups that many consider to be ’problematic’ in purification. “Sticky” compounds, also known as non-specific adsorbers (NSAs), are metal-sensitive targets what can adsorb to positively charged metal surfaces in the LC system flow path and column, making them difficult to detect and collect effectively. Although other methods, such as column pre-conditioning, can be implemented for isolating compounds known to be interactive, this option can be time-consuming and lead to sample loss and excessive solvent waste.&nbsp;</p><p>Although lab scale purifications in which tens to hundreds of milligrams of target compound are isolated from crude mixtures are still performed routinely, the trend toward smaller scale purification is becoming more prevalent. Laboratories are increasingly opting to isolate only a few milligrams of target compound for preliminary studies. Successful target candidates are then isolated in greater amounts to satisfy ensuing experiments. Whether the objective is to isolate a small amount of target compound for exploratory studies, or to purify greater amounts for their use as reference standards, a column which can resolve eluting impurities efficiently is required.&nbsp;</p><p>Echinacea is an herbaceous flowering plant in the daisy family<sup>1,2</sup> and is one of the most important medical herbs widely used to treat the common cold and other infectious diseases.<sup>3</sup> One of the most abundant compounds in echinacea is chicoric acid (Figure 1), a phenylpropanoid and caffeic acid derivative.<sup>4,5</sup> In this scale-up study, chicoric acid, a suspected “sticky” target polar compound was isolated from a complex echinacea tea extract using two inert XSelect HSS T3 MaxPeak Premier OBD Columns with different particle sizes and dimensions (3.5 μm 10 x 100 mm and 5 μm 10 x 150 mm). The MaxPeak Premier OBD preparative HPLC columns are considered ’inert’ because they are enabled with Waters High Performance Surface (HPS) Technology. The chicoric acid isolated using the 3.5 μm column was of equivalent UV purity to the product isolated using the 5 μm column, with a 34% savings in run time. Its ability to integrate seamlessly with autosamplers, high‑speed discrete sampling systems, and autodilutors has further contributed to its widespread adoption.<sup>1–3</sup> These capabilities are especially important in contract environmental laboratories, where increasing competition and financial pressures have made sample throughput and productivity a top priority. At the same time, laboratories are expected to process more samples in less time, without sacrificing data quality or ease-of-use. To address these demands, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500"><strong>Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</strong></a> (ICP-QQQ) includes a unique Dual-Cell System (DCS) collision/reaction cell (CRC). For routine testing of large numbers of samples, the DCS can be operated in Advanced Helium Mode (AHM), a revolutionary collision-cell mode that delivers excellent-quality data across a wide range of analytes.</p><p>AHM delivers high‑sensitivity measurements while effectively removing interferences through a dual mechanism of collision‑induced dissociation (CID) and kinetic energy discrimination (KED), eliminating the need for multiple cell conditions.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>AHM: A revolution in helium-based interference removal&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>AHM represents a major advancement in He-KED collision-cell technology by dynamically optimizing DCS conditions for both low- and high-mass elements in real time. As a result, AHM provides an approximately 20-fold improvement in sensitivity for low-mass elements and approximately a twofold improvement for mid- to high-mass elements. By enabling interference removal across the entire periodic table in a single gas mode, AHM replaces no gas, conventional He, and high energy (HE) He mode. Eliminating cell‑gas switching simplifies the workflow and accelerates sample measurement using the 9500 ICP-QQQ with DCS.&nbsp;</p><p>As shown in Figure 1, the DCS incorporates a two-stage ion guide design (front and rear ion guides) and rapid cell voltage control. These features underpin the improved performance of AHM relative to conventional He-KED mode. Further technical details of the DCS and AHM are described elsewhere.<sup>4</sup></p><h5><strong>AVS MS discrete sampling: Maximizing sample throughput and minimizing maintenance&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The 9500 ICP-QQQ can also be fitted with the optional Agilent AVS MS discrete sampling accessory, which is ideal for high-throughput applications. The AVS&nbsp;MS minimizes both sample delivery and rinsing times, significantly accelerating the analytical cycle. When combined with AHM, the 9500 with AVS MS reduces both the analysis time per sample and the interface’s exposure to the complex sample matrices common in environmental samples.</p><p>The AVS MS is an automated multi-port switching valve system that directs sample and rinse solutions through different flow paths.<sup>1,2</sup> It introduces sample to the ICP-MS only during data acquisition, while a clean blank solution is nebulized at all other times. This approach not only increases sample throughput but also reduces the amount of sample that reaches the instrument, resulting in lower cleaning requirements and improved long-term stability.&nbsp;</p><p>By combining AVS MS discrete sampling and a single AHM collision cell mode for all elements, laboratories can achieve higher sample throughput and lower maintenance frequency, ultimately reducing operating costs and improving margins.&nbsp;</p><p>In this study, certified reference materials (CRMs) representative of the routine workload in contract environmental laboratories were analyzed by the 9500 ICP-QQQ to assess accuracy, productivity, and long‑term stability.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The study showed that the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ with Dual-Cell System (DCS) operating in Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and equipped with an integrated AVS MS discrete sampler delivered exceptional performance for routine environmental analyses.&nbsp;</p><p>Over 140 samples, including real-world environmental water samples, were analyzed in under 140&nbsp;minutes, with no need for matrix matching the calibration standards or recalibration. The 9500 ICP-QQQ workflow delivered a 50% increase in sample throughput compared with a comparable single‑quad ICP‑MS method, substantially improving overall productivity.&nbsp;</p><p>The method’s accuracy was confirmed through multiple measurements of water, soil, and sediment CRMs. Each sample was analyzed in under one minute, highlighting the method’s capacity for high‑throughput analysis while maintaining accuracy, as demonstrated by recoveries within 100 ± 10%. The long-term stability test results confirmed the robust performance of the 9500 ICP-QQQ with UHMI and AVS&nbsp;MS for the analysis of high-TDS samples, with no internal standard failures over more than two hours.&nbsp;</p><p>The results confirm fast analysis, effective interference removal, and robust, stable performance during the analysis of high‑matrix samples over long runs—all critical performance criteria for demanding environmental workflows.&nbsp;</p><p>In an increasingly competitive landscape, where environmental laboratories are under pressure to improve productivity without compromising data quality, the 9500 ICP-QQQ controlled by Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software operating in a single gas cell mode offers a powerful solution. AHM streamlines analytical workflows, reduces instrument maintenance demands, and delivers robust, reproducible results, enhancing overall operational efficiency.</p><h3><strong>2. LECO: Temperature-Dependent Determination of Total Carbon (TC), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Residual Oxidizable Carbon (ROC), and Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC) in Soil</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/CM_812_TC_TOC_TIC_ROC_SOIL_203_821_728_4773eacc8f.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis is a widely used indicator of soil quality in agricultural and ecological systems. Because TOC reflects the amount of carbon stored in soil organic matter, it serves as a strong measure of soil health, fertility, and its capacity to sequester atmospheric carbon. Organic carbon supports essential soil functions, including microbial activity, nutrient cycling, and soil aggregation, which in turn improves water-holding capacity, reduces erosion, and strengthens the resilience of cropping systems. These qualities are especially important in regenerative agriculture, where restoring ecosystem function is a central goal. TOC measurements are also valuable for evaluating the impact of management practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, reduced tillage, and the application of compost or manure. By tracking TOC levels, growers can optimize soil amendment strategies to build organic matter effectively without excessive application.&nbsp;</p><p>Residual oxidizable carbon (ROC) is the portion of soil organic carbon that is more stable than actively cycling carbon, yet can still be oxidized through chemical or thermal processes, typically at temperatures between 400–600 °C. Unlike biologically active carbon pools, ROC represents a long-lasting, non-bioavailable carbon reserve made up of materials such as charcoal, biochar, lignin, humus, and graphite. Because these carbon forms decompose slowly, they contribute to durable soil structure, improved nutrient retention, and gradual carbon release. Measuring ROC provides insight into the stability of soil carbon and helps differentiate persistent carbon from rapidly degradable fractions. By comparing ROC to TOC, growers can estimate how much of the soil organic carbon is readily available for biological processes versus how much of it contributes to long-term carbon sequestration.</p><h4><strong>Instrument Model and Configuration&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=24&amp;search=CM812"><strong>LECO CM812</strong></a> is a multiphase carbon and moisture determinator with a variable ramp furnace and a wide carbon detection range that is specifically designed to differentiate various forms of carbon by the temperature at which they combust. This capability facilitates the temperature differentiation determination of the different species of carbon in soil.</p><h4><strong>Typical Data&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The low carbon calibration was performed utilizing a linear, force through origin calibration using LECO 502-696 (Lot 1005) Synthetic Carbon LCRM (1.01 % C). The high carbon calibration was performed utilizing a linear, full regression calibration using LECO 502-696 (Lot 1005) Synthetic Carbon LCRM (1.01 % C) and LECO 502-905 (Lot 1002) Synthetic Carbon LCRM (5.00 % C). The calibrations were verified using LECO 502-934 (Lot 1002) Synthetic Carbon LCRM (0.53 % C) and a reduced sample mass of LECO 502-905 (Lot 1002) Synthetic Carbon LCRM (5.00 % C). The results are reported on a dry basis.</p><h3><strong>3. Conventionally, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) has been widely used for trace element analysis in metallic materials. In Japan, steel samples have been controlled and analyzed based on JIS G 12011) and JIS G 1258. 2) Recently, however, as metallic materials have become increasingly sophisticated, there has been a growing need to control elements at concentrations below those that can be addressed by conventional methods.</p><p>Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is known as a highly sensitive technique for trace element analysis, but in the past it was not always suitable for analyzing high-matrix samples such as metals. In recent years, however, improvements in sample introduction systems, including gas dilution technology, have made it possible to apply ICP-MS to high-matrix samples as well.&nbsp;</p><p>This article describes the trace element analysis of certified reference materials for steel using the Aerosol Dilution System installed as standard in the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ICPMS-2050"><strong>ICPMS-2050</strong></a> (Fig. 1). By reducing the amount of sample introduced into the plasma through gas dilution, matrix-induced decreases in signal intensity and signal drift could be effectively suppressed, enabling stable analytical results. The results are presented below.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>In this application news article, trace elements in a certified reference material for steel were analyzed using the<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ICPMS-2040%2F2050"><strong> ICPMS2040/2050</strong></a>. Agreement with the certified values confirmed the accuracy of the analytical results. In addition, for the elements analyzed in this study, simultaneous analysis under a single condition was possible without changing the cell conditions, thereby reducing the analysis time. By using a mini torch, the ICPMS-2040/2050 reduces argon gas consumption while enabling stable analysis of high-matrix metal samples such as steel.</p><h3><strong>4. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Unbiased Color Analysis using UV-Visible Spectrophotometers</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/unbiased_color_analysis_using_uv_visible_spectrophotometers_an1406_en_b2893661ee.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Across a range of different applications, the color of a material can be an important quality assessment. For certain environments, like textiles and paint manufacturers, the color must match an established criteria to ensure product consistency. In other areas, like water analysis and pharmaceutical manufacturing,¹- ⁴ the color of a product may indicate the presence of undesired substances. While the specific areas of study can vary greatly, the ability to rigorously assess a given sample’s color is shared among these application spaces. Visual methods for determining color have been used in many of these industries; however, technician-to-technician biases inherently influence the analysis. This can lead to discrepancies between testing subjects and testing sites. As a result, it is often preferred to use an unbiased instrument-based method for precisely determining the color of a given product or sample.&nbsp;</p><p>The human eye is able to collect the light reflected off a surface, leading to the perception of color. Since the color range we can see covers the aptly named visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum (400 – 700 nm), UV-Visible spectrophotometers are often used for color analysis. These instruments are used to assess a material’s response to light in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible spectral range. Based on the electronic structure of the material, light within this range is either absorbed, transmitted, or reflected off the material of interest. Given that color perception is based on the collected reflections from a material’s surface, UV-Visible spectroscopy is an ideal technique for this analysis.&nbsp;</p><p>Once the visible spectrum of a given sample, either in liquid or solid form, is collected, there are a number of unique analysis methods that can be used to report the color. As there are many different industries which require this analysis, a multitude of different standardized methods exist which call for different color analysis procedures. Herein, a selection of these standard color analyses is detailed, and information pertaining to the industry standards required for these analyses are discussed. For these methods, special attention is focused on the use of UV-Visible techniques.</p><h4><strong>Summary&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The color of a finished product can have implications on the quality, both in terms of the appearance and the presence of degraded materials or contaminants. As shown herein, there exist many standardized methods for ascertaining the color of a given substance. While visual methods can be applied, the use of a UV-Visible spectrophotometer is widely accepted and is helpful in providing an unbiased technique for color analysis.</p>

<p><strong>Packaging materials, among them plastics, are now the focus of the circular economy. The recent legislation establishes the elimination of single use plastics and the use of a high percentage of recycled materials in the packaging, even in those used for food applications. Among the postconsumer plastics, PET has been taken as the primary objective for recycling and nowadays the recycling technologies for PET are well advanced, thus producing very high quality of rPET. However, the case of polyolefins is very different. In a recent study carried out in our lab, more than 450 substances were identified in rHDPE and many of them were above the acceptable limits for food contact. It is quite obvious that the use of recycled polyolefins is not ready yet.</strong></p>
<p>The first principle is to guarantee the safety in use. But for this purpose, advanced analytical techniques are required, as the forest of peaks/substances released from the recycled polyolefins is still a nightmare. Usually, when analyzing the leachables/migration the problem is not to detect them, but to identify the individual substances and confirm their identity versus the corresponding standards. Unfortunately, many of the released chemicals don’t have standards available and thus, the confirmation and later quantification is not possible. New advanced techniques, such as ion mobility (IMS) in high resolution mass spectrometry and the use of libraries provide new tools for this purpose.</p>
<p>The presentation will show details of analytical methodology used, a few case studies and the available libraries containing more than 10,000 substances detected worldwide from packaging materials with the IMS data.</p>

<p><strong>The separation and analysis of lipids and lipid-based formulations like mRNA vaccines by chromatography in conjunction with spectrometry can be challenging. Many lipids lack a chromophore and not all lipid classes have an appropriate retention on reversed-phase. Separation on normal phase followed by a rapid derivatization with primuline simplifies lipid analysis in many cases.</strong></p>
<p>In this webinar, Prof. Dr. Melanie Broszat, full professor in Analytical Chemistry at the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences and Editor of the CAMAG Bibliography Services at CAMAG, will present the potential of HPTLC in the field of lipids. A method for quality control of lipid-based formulations with the fully automated HPTLC PRO System will be shown. She will also discuss the use of HPTLC coupled with mass spectrometry in the field of lipidomic research.</p>

<p><strong>Welcome to the 2022 Detection and Quantification of PFAS in Air, Water, Soil, and Food Packaging e-learning series.</strong></p>
<p><strong>In the third event of our three-part eSeminar series, a leading expert in PFAS analysis will discuss a variety of topics around PFAS in food packaging materials, including method development and sample preparation.</strong></p>
<p>A non-intentionally added substance or NIAS, in packaging is an issue of growing concern. First mentioned in EU Regulation 10/2011, predictable and unpredictable NIAS, in the form of degradation products and impurities, were found not only in plastic but also in paper and in newly developed materials, such as recycled and biobased packaging.</p>
<p>In the case of recycled materials, there is a new type of NIAS, which comes from recycling cycles: an accumulation of different mixture of chemicals might occur when materials are recycled many times. The prediction, identification and control of NIAS in recycled materials is therefore challenging because of the difficulty tracing their origin.</p>
<p>Due to the complex identification of the contamination pathway, chemicals like PFAS can be considered to be both intentionally and non-intentionally added. Some PFAS molecules are included for use and find market applications in food contact materials due to their grease- and water-proof properties. In this case they are intentionally added. This is frequent in paper packaging; and when this also has a recycled content, PFAS can be present as NIAS, originating from the intentionally added PFAS in the recycled paper fibres, or from inks, for example. </p>
<p>Environmental contamination should also not be ignored, where PFAS can be introduced in paper packaging from water used during the recycling or manufacturing process or from the atmosphere. </p>
<p>Distinguishing between these sources is important: new instrumental technologies and approaches are needed, not only for analytical efficiency and for performance, but also to open up the identification and quantification of what is predictable and what is not.</p>
