Agilent Technologies: High-Precision Determination of Four Greenhouse Gases in the Atmosphere Using the Agilent 8890 GC</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_monitoring_greenhouse_gas_8890_gc_5994_8744en_agilent_0e08f0909f.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Currently, China is actively implementing dual-control measures on total energy consumption and intensity. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued "The 14th Five-Year Plan for Ecological and Environmental Monitoring", which specifically highlights the advancement of technologies for direct measurement of carbon emissions. It calls for organizing pilot projects in multiple key industries and enterprises to monitor greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide and methane, establishing greenhouse gas monitoring networks in key cities, and upgrading the greenhouse gas monitoring capabilities of national atmospheric background stations. As a result, conducting greenhouse gas monitoring within the environmental protection stations of provinces and cities has become a critical task.</p><p>The use of GC for detecting greenhouse gases has a long history. The conventional methods used gas sampling valve for injection, TCD and FID for sequential detection of CO<sub>2</sub> and CH<sub>4</sub> , or combining a methanizer with an FID to detect CO<sub>2</sub> and CH<sub>4</sub> in one analytical channel and detecting N<sub>2</sub>O on ECD in another analytical channel.<sup>2</sup> The analytical precision for CO<sub>2</sub>, CH<sub>4</sub>, and N2 O achieved with such configurations typically ranges from 0.2% to 0.5%, but it is difficult to obtain precision better than 0.1%, which does not meet the current requirements for greenhouse gas monitoring accuracy and precision. Moreover, the traditional methods rarely report analytical precision for SF<sub>6</sub> at ppt concentration levels. To monitor trace levels of CO<sub>2</sub> , CH<sub>4</sub>, N<sub>2</sub>O, and ultratrace levels of SF<sub>6</sub> on the same GC system with high-precision results, it is necessary to optimize multiple factors included in sample injection, separation, and detection. Furthermore, the system configuration must be flexible enough to allow expansion for future analytical needs, such as incorporating trace CO analysis in air. This work demonstrates how the 8890&nbsp;GC achieves high-precision analysis of four key greenhouse gases by optimizing the injection volume, controlling injection reproducibility, and utilizing multichannel separation and high-sensitivity detectors to ensure the system runs stably in long‑term operation.</p><h4><strong>Experimental</strong></h4><h5><strong>Instrumental&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=8890+GC"><strong>8890 GC</strong></a> is configured as a three-channel/multivalve/multicolumn system, enabling independent analysis of four greenhouse gases—CH<sub>4</sub> , CO<sub>2</sub> , N<sub>2</sub>O, and SF<sub>6</sub> —within 8 minutes using a single injection. The target compounds are analyzed in separate channels, reducing chromatographic peak broadening and thereby improving sensitivity and&nbsp;repeatability.&nbsp;</p><ul><li>For CO<sub>2</sub> analysis, a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=methanizer"><strong>methanizer</strong></a> is used to convert CO<sub>2</sub> to CH<sub>4</sub> , which is then detected by FID. The system eliminates the need for dehydration through backflushing and venting operation via switching valves, preventing interference from moisture and oxygen in the air and extending the lifespan of the methanizer.&nbsp;</li><li>For N<sub>2</sub>O and SF<sub>6</sub> analysis, the ECD with hidden anode design is used for high‑sensitivity detection and strong anti‑contaminant capability.&nbsp;</li><li>The CH<sub>4</sub> analysis is conducted on a single column with a dedicated large injection loop, significantly enhancing detection sensitivity and repeatability, achieving a detection limit for methane as low as single-digit ppb levels.</li></ul><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Based on its exceptional pneumatic control and valve-based flow path design, the multivalve/multicolumn Agilent 8890 GC system achieves high-sensitivity and high-precision measurements of four key greenhouse gases. This is accomplished through optimized and precise control of sample flow rate/volume, selection of premium analytical columns, and the use of highly stable and robust FID and ECD. Standard gas samples of CO2 , CH4 , N2 O, and SF6 , with concentrations equivalent to atmospheric levels, were measured continuously 10 times. The measurement precision for these gases was better than 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.1%, and 0.5%, respectively, fully meeting the high-precision monitoring requirements of environmental monitoring stations at various levels for target greenhouse gases. Compared to other monitoring solutions, this approach is based on a stable and reliable gas chromatography platform that is technically easier to master and deploy. It represents a trusted solution developed by Agilent to assist in establishing a greenhouse gas monitoring network in China.</p><h3><strong>2. In total, this product contains 5,840 mass spectra, which provides strong support for the analysis of polymer additives. In Ver.2, the compound registration has been newly enhanced, for example vulcanizing accelerators utilized in the rubber filed. ECH-based polymer pipes are commonly used in the production of drinking water due to their durability and resistance to corrosion. However, ECH is known for its high reactivity and toxicity, which poses significant health risks if it contaminates drinking water. Exposure to ECH can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and has been classified as a probable human carcinogen.<sup>1</sup></p><p>Due to these risks, many countries have imposed strict limits on the amount of ECH allowed in drinking water. Recently, Europe set a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 30 parts per trillion (ppt) for ECH in drinking water.<sup>2</sup> Whereas typically required detection limits for most compounds mandated for analysis in Europe can be achieved using methods based on static headspace, the stringent MDL required for ECH requires preconcentration, for example using purge and trap (P&amp;T) technology.<sup>3,4</sup> This technology involves purging the water sample with an inert gas to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are then trapped and concentrated for analysis, ensuring reliable detection at very low concentrations. In the United States, the analysis of VOCs in drinking water is mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA requires the use of P&amp;T technology for drinking water analysis to ensure that even trace amounts of harmful compounds like ECH are detected and managed appropriately.&nbsp;</p><p>The following evaluation describes the use of the ISQ 7610 Single Quadrupole MS system coupled with the Thermo Scientific™ TRACE™ 1610 GC with the Thermo Scientific™ HeSaver-H2 Safer™ split/splitless injector and Teledyne LABS Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T concentrator combined with the AQUATek LVA autosampler for the analysis of ECH in drinking water.</p><h4><strong>Experimental</strong></h4><h5><strong>GC-MS parameters&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>A <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/486"><strong>TRACE 1610 GC</strong></a> was coupled to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/484"><strong>ISQ 7610 MS</strong></a> equipped with the Thermo Scientific™ NeverVent ™ vacuum probe interlock (VPI) and an ExtractaBrite ion source. A <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/1773"><strong>Thermo Scientific™ TraceGOLD™ TG-VMS column</strong></a>, 30 m × 0.25 mm, 1.4 µm film (P/N 26080-3320) was used for compound separation. The HeSaver-H2 Safer SSL injector was utilized to reduce the carrier gas consumption by decoupling the gas used for the chromatographic separation from the gas used to pressurize the inlet and maintain split and purge flows. The critical separations were maintained with a run time of under 15 minutes.</p><p>For this analysis, the ISQ 7610 MS was operated in Selected Ion Monitoring (SIM) mode for increased selectivity, as required for this application. Extended method parameters for the ISQ 7610 MS are shown in Table 2.</p><h5><strong>Instrument control and data processing&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>Data was acquired, processed, and reported using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/76"><strong>Thermo Scientific™ Chromeleon™ Chromatography Data System (CDS)</strong></a>. This software can control both the GC-MS system and the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T with the AQUATek LVA. This allows a single software to be utilized for the full workflow, simplifying the instrument operation. This application note is available for download via the Thermo Scientific™ AppsLab Library, which contains all the parameters needed to acquire, process, and report the analytical data for analysis of ECH.5</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This study demonstrates the capability of the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T with the AQUATek LVA system connected to the ISQ 7610 Single Quadrupole GC-MS to detect and quantify low-level ECH in drinking water samples, in compliance with EPA requirements.&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Utilizing the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T’s ability to purge with nitrogen, along with using the HeSaver-H₂Safer SSL injector, nearly four times less helium was consumed during the analysis without sacrificing system performance.&nbsp;</li><li>The linearity of the calibration curve from 30 ppt to 5,000 ppt passed method requirements.</li><li>The application proved robust during an extended study with 20 samples of a 1,000 ppt ECH standard injected over a series of 124 injections, obtaining 4.4% precision and 118% accuracy of the recovery.</li></ul>

In conventional designs, this alignment must be performed manually by the user, a process that is difficult, time-consuming, and often unreliable, as the modulation loop can shift during operation due to repeated hot-jet gas pulses, leading to misalignment and degraded modulation performance. For processed tomato products in particular, a vegetative (green) or hay-like off-flavor is often a key concern. This off-flavor has been linked to methoxypyrazines present at very low levels (ppt levels around 10 ng/L).&nbsp;</p><p>Methoxypyrazines include many closely related analogs. Therefore, a robust quantitative method must deliver both high sensitivity and sufficient selectivity (and/or separation) to handle real matrices.&nbsp;</p><p>In this article, five methoxypyrazines previously detected in vegetables (Table 1) were analyzed using a GC-MS/MS system with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=SPME+Arrow"><strong>SPME Arrow</strong></a> injection method. The method provides stable quantitation at ng/L (ppt) levels, even in complex, interference-rich samples.</p><h4><strong>System Configuration</strong></h4><p>All measurements were performed with a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMS-TQ8040+NX"><strong>GCMS-TQ8040 NX triple quadrupole</strong></a> GC–MS/MS system equipped with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=AOC6000+Plus"><strong>AOC6000 Plus</strong></a> multifunctional autosampler (Fig. 1).&nbsp;</p><p>The AOC-6000 Plus supports multiple sample introduction techniques—including liquid injection, headspace, and SPME— and can switch between them automatically based on the method. This flexibility makes it well suited for laboratories that handle many sample types and applications.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion</strong></h4><p>By using an AOC-6000 Plus autosampler with the GCMS-TQ8040 NX system and optimizing the SPME Arrow injection method, five off-flavor methoxypyrazines were successfully measured at ng/L (ppt) levels. Using MRM improved selectivity and enabled isomer-specific analysis, including differentiation of isomers that are difficultto separate by GC alone.&nbsp;</p><p>When applied to real processed tomato products, the method enabled quantitation of 2-methoxy-3,5-dimethylpyrazine (MDMP). This system reduces matrix interference and provides high sensitivity for trace-level off-flavor compounds.</p><h3><strong>3. Various forms of capture include evacuated vessels, organic vapor monitors, or purge and trap devices, all of which require samples to be sent for analysis. Alternatively, electrochemical sensors or open path FT-IR spectroscopy can provide more immediate results. However, none of these technologies are capable of providing the spatial and temporal resolution required to qualify as actionable information.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>Analytical platform&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The primary feature of the Sentinel PRO mass spectrometer is the magnetic sector analyzer. This field-proven technology has demonstrated the strongest performance for industrial on-line gas analysis. Magnetic sector technology offers precision, accuracy, long intervals between calibrations. The new touchscreen interface further enhances usability, providing intuitive in-person operation, simplified maintenance, and real-time data viewing. Multi-role user permissions ensure security and control allowing operators to customize settings based on their specific needs.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>Comprehensive data collection&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>With speed and precision, the Sentinel PRO analyzer monitors all the critical areas for short-term exposure levels of toxic VOCs, and also provides accurate and time-weighted average exposure data. With a high number of sample points available, many can be located close to potential leak points such as valve stems, etc., enabling leak detection and correction before any toxic hazard is created.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>Membrane inlet mass spectrometry&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The analyzer is fitted with a membrane inlet to reduce the pressure of the sample air from atmospheric to the working pressure of the enclosed ion source. This allows a method of sample introduction that greatly enhances the system’s sensitivity to VOCs. Since the membrane is more permeable to VOCs than to major air gases, it provides enrichment by several orders of magnitude, enabling detection as low as 5 ppb (species dependent) permits easy membrane replacement during annual routine maintenance to minimize downtime and increase productivity.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>

The tool was designed to address one of the main challenges in GC×GC-MS workflows: extracting meaningful chemical information from highly complex multidimensional datasets while reducing dependence on proprietary software. GcDUO combines the strengths of <strong>PARAFAC</strong> and <strong>PARAFAC2</strong> chemometric algorithms to perform automated peak detection, deconvolution, compound annotation, and quantification across large batches of samples.</p><p>The workflow begins with raw GC×GC-MS data imported from CDF files and converted into a four-dimensional matrix. Regions of interest (ROIs) are automatically selected using a watershed algorithm, allowing relevant chromatographic features to be isolated from the background. PARAFAC decomposition is then applied to separate overlapping compounds into their individual first-dimension retention times, second-dimension retention times, and mass spectra. Compound identification is performed using spectral similarity calculations, retention index information, and comparison against reference libraries, creating a consensus-based annotation strategy that improves confidence in identifications.</p><p>To further improve quantitative performance, GcDUO incorporates a constrained PARAFAC2 approach that can model chromatographic peak shifts between samples while preserving accurate peak integration. The framework was evaluated using benchmark GC×GC datasets containing fragrances, allergens, food-related compounds, and breath-analysis samples. Validation studies showed strong detection and annotation performance, including successful identification of most compounds in independent datasets such as FruityBeer and BreathMix. Quantitative comparisons with the widely used <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/41"><strong>ChromaTOF software</strong></a> demonstrated highly comparable retention times and peak areas for a range of volatile compounds, indicating that GcDUO can deliver results similar to established commercial platforms.</p><p>The authors conclude that GcDUO provides a powerful open-source alternative for GC×GC-MS data processing. The framework supports automated deconvolution, annotation, and quantification without requiring strict trilinearity assumptions often associated with traditional chemometric approaches. Although computational cost and user expertise remain important considerations, GcDUO offers performance comparable to gold-standard commercial software while expanding access to advanced GC×GC-MS data analysis for metabolomics, environmental, food, fragrance, and other analytical applications. The software is freely available through GitHub, supporting broader adoption and further development by the scientific community.</p><h3><strong>3. Shimadzu: Discrimination of Coffee Bean Species Based on Aroma Compounds</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_01123_en_c8ac025ba9.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><h5><strong>User Benefits</strong></h5><ul><li>Qualitative analysis of aroma compounds can be easily performed using the Smart Aroma Database.</li><li>Intuitive statistical analysis and exploration of characteristic compounds are possible using eMSTAT Solution.</li><li>The AOC -6000 multifunctional autosampler system enables the analysis of aroma compounds without sample pretreatment.</li></ul><p>Common coffee bean types are broadly classified into two types: Coffea arabica (Arabica) and Coffea canephora (Robusta). Among them, Arabica is superior in flavor and is highly favored as a specialty beverage. However, in recent years, there have been multiple reports of products sold claiming to be 100% Arabica while being adulterated with Robusta<sup>1)</sup>. A reported method for discriminating between the two is the analysis of lipophilic extracts of coffee beans using a benchtop NMR spectrometer<sup>1)</sup>. This method uses 16-O-Methylcafestol, which is present in Robusta but almost undetectable in Arabica, as a marker. However, it requires complicated pretreatment such as extraction and concentration.&nbsp;</p><p>Therefore, in this Application News, we investigated a method to discriminate between Arabica and Robusta more easily and rapidly using GC-MS/MS and the statistical analysis software eMSTAT Solution.</p><h5><strong>Sample and Analytical Methods&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>Commercially available coffee beans roasted at the same roastery were used as samples. Four brands of Arabica (Kilimanjaro, Brazil Bourbon, Mandheling G1, Brazil No.2 #18) and two brands of Robusta (Vietnam Robusta, Java Robusta) were prepared (Table 1). Each brand was individually crushed with a mill, and 1 g was weighed and sealed in a screw vial.</p><p>Volatile compounds were concentrated and introduced into the GC-MS using the HS-SPME method and then analyzed under the conditions registered in the GC-MS(/MS) Smart Aroma Database (Table 2). The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMSTQ8040+NX"><strong>GCMS-TQTM8040 NX</strong></a> and the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=AOC-6000"><strong>AOC-6000 multifunctional autosampler</strong></a> system were used as the analytical instruments (Fig. 1). To verify whether rapid analysis is possible, a temperature ramp of 10˚C/min was adopted, and a low-polarity column was used to obtain stable retention times for each compound. Data acquisition was performed in Scan mode or MRM mode, and each sample was analyzed three times.</p><h4><strong>Exploration of Characteristic Aroma Compounds for Arabica and Robusta&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Next, we investigated which compounds contribute to the discrimination between Arabica and Robusta. The PCA score plot (Fig. 4) reflects the differences in the tendencies of each group, with Arabica distributed on the left side and Robusta on the right side, clearly separated along the first principal component (PC1) axis. Referring to the corresponding loading plot, compounds located on the left side of the origin tend to have higher area values in Arabica, which is also positioned on the left in the score plot. On the other hand, compounds on the right side tend to show higher values in Robusta, which is located on the right in the score plot. In other words, the difference in the balance of these compoundsisthe main factorseparating the two groups. First, Arabica was commonly rich in compounds such as 5-Methyl furfural, Acetoin, and Furaneol acetate. MS chromatograms analyzed using LabSolutions Insight GCMS are shown in Fig. 7. In eMSTAT Solution, not only score plots and loading plots but also box plots can be easily drawn, making it possible to easily visualize and compare the distribution tendencies of each compound. From the box plots of the above compounds (Fig. 8), it was visually confirmed that all of them are contained in abundance in Arabica. These compounds are sometimes described as having a roasted or creamy quality, and it can be inferred that this result supports the characteristics of Arabica, which issuperior in aroma and acidity.&nbsp;</p><p>On the other hand, a compound found in abundance in Robusta was p-Vinylguaiacol. This compound is known to cause an offflavor similar to a medicinal odor in sake, and its content was low in Arabica. From this, it was suggested that p-Vinylguaiacol may be one of the compounds contributing to the bitterness and offtastes characteristic of Robusta.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>In this Application News, we investigated the discrimination of coffee bean types based on aroma compounds using the triple quadrupole gas chromatograph mass spectrometer <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMSTQ8040+NX"><strong>GCMSTQ8040 NX</strong></a> and the GC-MS(/MS) <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Smart+Aroma+Database"><strong>Smart Aroma Database</strong></a> for aroma analysis.&nbsp;</p><p>Four types of Arabica and two types of Robusta were analyzed as samples. Analysis using Scan data confirmed a tendency for the two types to separate. Subsequently, data was acquired in MRM mode, which offers higher sensitivity and selectivity, and detailed analysis was performed using the statistical analysis software eMSTAT Solution. As a result, the two groups were clearly separated in PCA and cluster analysis, demonstrating the effectiveness of discrimination by this method. Additionally, a discrimination model was developed and validated, confirming that highly accurate discrimination is possible.&nbsp;</p><p>From the above results, we conclude that the discrimination of coffee beans by aroma compound analysisis highly feasible using this method. Furthermore, this method enables a comprehensive workflow, from discrimination to the identification of characteristic compoundsfor each type.</p><h3><strong>4. Waters Corporation: Improvements to the Analysis of PBDEs in Environmental Matrices: Transitioning from EI Magnetic Sector to GC-APCI TQ MS/MS</strong></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720009372_7abfa9f0e9.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>This poster evaluates the transition of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) analysis in environmental samples from traditional electron ionization high-resolution magnetic sector GC-MS to a modern <strong>GC-APCI triple quadrupole MS/MS (GC-APCI TQ MS/MS)</strong> workflow. PBDE flame retardants are highly regulated due to their environmental persistence and potential health risks, making accurate and reliable analytical methods essential. The study investigated whether a GC-APCI MS/MS approach could match or exceed the performance of established GC-HRMS methods while offering greater flexibility and modernization opportunities.</p><p>The method was developed on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/554"><strong>Waters Xevo TQ Absolute mass spectrometer</strong> </a>equipped with APCI ionization and an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8890"><strong>Agilent 8890 GC</strong></a>. A key innovation was the use of <strong>nitrogen as the carrier gas instead of helium</strong>, helping laboratories reduce dependence on helium supplies and mitigate increasing helium costs. By applying nitrogen flow ramping, the authors maintained chromatographic resolution and runtime comparable to the reference helium-based method without requiring changes in column dimensions. The approach also reduced the risk of thermal degradation of highly brominated compounds such as BDE 209 and achieved faster elution while preserving peak shape and separation quality.</p><p>For quantitative analysis, up to six MRM transitions per analyte were monitored, taking advantage of the characteristic isotope patterns of brominated compounds. The use of multiple transitions improved selectivity and sensitivity, while Waters waters_connect software enabled summation of MRM signals to enhance signal-to-noise ratios near detection limits. Excellent calibration performance was achieved across more than three orders of magnitude, with correlation coefficients above 0.999 for all analytes. Internal standards and recovery standards demonstrated strong reproducibility, and quality control samples showed precision typically below 15% RSD and acceptable accuracy across low, medium, and high concentration levels.</p><p>The authors conclude that an all-nitrogen GC-APCI TQ MS/MS configuration can successfully meet the performance criteria established for PBDE analysis by reference EI GC-HRMS methods. The workflow maintains critical chromatographic separations, delivers accurate quantitative results, and offers a platform that could potentially combine PBDE determination with other halogenated flame retardants in a single analytical method. These findings demonstrate that GC-APCI TQ MS/MS represents a robust and practical modernization strategy for environmental PBDE analysis.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></section></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>

MDCW / University of Washington: Implementing Tile-Based Fisher Ratio Analysis of GC×GC-TOFMS Data to Obtain a Master Peak Table of All Detected Analyte Compounds in Many Petroleum-Based Samples</strong></h3><ul><li>Presentation</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/O_9_Halvorsen_136808e314.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><section><div><div><div><div><div><div><p>The presentation describes the development of a chemometric workflow for advanced fuel sample analysis using GC×GC-TOFMS data. The work was carried out by the University of Washington in collaboration with Chevron Technical Center, with the goal of improving the characterization of complex petroleum-based samples. Moving from conventional GC to comprehensive two-dimensional GC increased peak capacity and chromatographic resolution, but also created the need for more advanced methods to generate reliable peak tables across many chemically diverse fuel samples.</p><p>The key method presented is a tile-based Fisher Ratio approach implemented through <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/348"><strong>ChromaTOF Tile</strong></a><strong>.</strong> This method identifies analytes that show statistically significant concentration differences between sample classes. Instead of relying only on peak detection or manual alignment, the workflow uses chromatographic “tiles” to reduce the impact of retention-time shifting and to capture both major and trace-level components. The study included multiple fuel classes, including hydrobate, reformate, naphtha, FCC gasoline, and blanks.</p><p>Because Fisher Ratio values alone do not directly indicate whether a compound is truly detectable, the authors added a blank-based p-testing strategy. Three blank chromatograms were used to estimate background signal distributions for each tile, and confidence intervals were then applied to determine whether each detected hit was present in individual sample classes. This produced a master peak table covering 719 hits across nine fuel sample classes. The results showed good reproducibility, with only 6.3% of classifications being heterogeneous across replicates.</p><p>Overall, the presentation concludes that the tile-based workflow can generate comprehensive and reproducible peak tables with reduced user intervention, while preserving the ability to recover trace analytes in complex petroleum samples. The approach should be broadly applicable to other complex sample types and could also be adapted using chemometric metrics other than Fisher Ratio, depending on the experimental design and analytical goals.</p><h3><strong>3. Shimadzu / ASMS: Is Your Next Sip Safe? A Simple, Rapid Method for Measuring volatile PFAS in Juices.</strong></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/TP_143_Is_Your_Next_Sip_Safe_A_Simple_Rapid_Method_for_Measuring_volatile_PFAS_in_Juices_a6ed9414c0.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution is a growing global concern due to links with adverse health effects, many of which remain poorly understood. 1 Accurate detection and quantification are therefore essential. While PFAS analysis has traditionally focused on water, attention is rapidly expanding to food and beverages, where testing remains limited despite high stakes and increasing regulations. 2 A recent PFAS lawsuit against a juice manufacturer underscored the heightened public scrutiny of PFAS in juices, placing food safety and brand reputation at risk. 3 This study presents a Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction– Triple Quadrupole Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME GC/MS/MS) method for PFAS quantitation in juices. GC/MS enables analysis of volatile PFAS unsuitable for LC/MS, while HS-SPME offers rapid analysis with minimal sample preparation in complex matrices.</p><h4><strong>Methods</strong></h4><p>A volatile PFAS analysis method was developed on a <strong>Shimadzu </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMS-TQ8040+NX"><strong>GCMS-TQ8040 NX</strong></a> with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=AOC-6000+Plus"><strong>AOC-6000 Plus multifunctional autosampler</strong></a> equipped with a solid phase microextraction (SPME) module (Figure 1).</p><h4><strong>Results&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The system was deemed free of contaminants and inferences. None of the target PFAS in the method blank were found in quantifiable concentration. In the study, the calibration curve for each target included at least seven calibrators. Calibration curve results showed a good linear fit for all compounds with coefficient of determination (R2 ) ≥ 0.993. The linear range and R2 of each PFAS target are shown in Table 3.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion</strong></h4><p>Overall, these results demonstrate the robustness and reliability of the method for PFAS analysis in two carton apple juices (Brands X and Y), one plastic bottled apple juice (Brand X), and a berry blend carton juice (Brand X). Orbitrap technology provides high resolution and mass accuracy, enabling confident identification of coeluting and isobaric compounds while reducing false results. Furthermore, the FS-HRAM acquisition enables simultaneous quantitation and screening within a single analysis with the capability of retrospective data analysis, allowing laboratories to reprocess datasets for additional or emerging compounds without re-injecting samples. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/2419"><strong>Orbitrap Exploris GC S mass spectrometer</strong></a><strong> </strong>features the Thermo Scientific NeverVent Advanced Electron Ionization Source (NVAEI) which offers an improved design providing enhanced sensitivity and robustness, allowing for increased instrument uptime and maximized sample throughput for rapid return on investment (ROI).</p><h4><strong>Materials and methods</strong></h4><h5><strong>Data analysis&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>Data was acquired, processed and reported using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/76"><strong>Thermo Scientific Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS) software</strong></a>, which provides integrated instrument control, automated workflows, and an intuitive interface for data analysis, customizable reporting, and compliant data management in accordance with FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and European Commission (EU) Annex 11. Its advanced reprocessing capability streamlines sequence setup, data review, and reporting offering the possibility to easily flag and check compliance with the current regulations.</p><p>Results Compliant analyte identification The use of HRAM-GCMS reduces the matrix interferences ensuring a confident and selective identification of analytes (Figure 1). All target compounds satisfied the SANTE criteria at the default MRL of 10 µg/kg and more than 90% were confirmed at concentrations of 1 µg/kg following the SANTE/11312/2021v2026 guidance criteria of:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>two ions were detected for each pesticide with mass accuracy ≤ 5 ppm with precursor and product ions in the extracted ion chromatograms fully overlapped,&nbsp;</li><li>due to the added value of accurate mass measurement, matching ion ratios is not necessary, however, an ion ratio (IR) deviation within ± 30% (relative) of the average of calibration standards from the same sequence was considered to provide additional support for identification</li><li>retention times (RT) within a tolerance of ± 0.1 minutes</li></ul><p>Sensitivity performance (IDL) and analytical linearity Instrument sensitivity was evaluated using calculated IDLs derived from replicate injections of low-level, matrix-matched standards. The Orbitrap Exploris GC S demonstrated detection limits at levels at or below 0.5 µg/kg for most of the investigated pesticides (Figure 2). Linear dynamic range was evaluated using matrix-matched calibration curves ranging 0.5–200 µg/kg, with each calibration level injected in triplicate. All target analytes demonstrated excellent linearity, with coefficients of determination (R²) &gt; 0.993, response factor (%RSD) values below 20% across the calibration range, and ion ratios (IRs) within ±30% of the average calibration standard values. System suitability for quantitative analysis was confirmed by calculated concentrations within ±20% of expected values and recoveries ranging from 96% to 104%. An example of calibration curve for Aldrin is shown in Figure 3.</p><h4><strong>Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The results obtained in these experiments demonstrate that the Orbitrap Exploris GC S mass spectrometer equipped with NeverVent AEI ion source represents a reliable tool for analysis of pesticides in complex matrices.&nbsp;</p><ul><li>The Orbitrap Exploris GC S offers a simple approach for the multiresidue analysis of pesticides allowing for full-scan acquisition combined with high mass resolving power&nbsp;</li><li>The NeverVent AEI ion source is designed for ultra-trace concentration detection, making it ideal for challenging applications ensuring detection limits at levels at or below 0.5 µg/kg for most of the investigated pesticides&nbsp;</li><li>Confident identification of compounds can be easily achieved through i). high spectral quality, ii). high spectral fidelity, ensuring consistent spectrum independently from concentration, and iii). consistent mass accuracy irrespectively of analyte concentration and time&nbsp;</li><li>System suitability for quantitative analysis was demonstrated with R2 &gt;0.993, RF %RSD across the entire calibration curve &lt; 20, and IRs within ± 30% of the average of calibration standards, calculated amounts within 20% the expected values, and percentage recovery (%) ranging from 96 to 104.</li></ul></div></div></div></div></div></div></section></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>

Increasing evidence of environmental and human-health risks has led to heightened global regulatory pressure, including REACH/POPs restrictions, and strengthened requirements from industry frameworks such as ZDHC, OEKO-TEX®, AFIRM, and Bluesign. These initiatives demand highly sensitive, reliable, and standardized analytical workflows capable of quantifying both volatile and non-volatile PFAS in diverse textile matrices. This study demonstrates end-to-end PFAS solutions aligned with EN 17681-1:2025, comprising heat- and ultrasound-assisted (HUA) extraction followed by GC/TQ and LC/TQ determination of volatile and non-volatile PFAS, respectively. The workflow enables robust quantification of a comprehensive PFAS panel in T-shirts, waterproof shorts, and socks.</p><h4><strong>Experimental</strong></h4><h5><strong>Instrumentation&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>A dual-platform analytical approach combining GC/TQ and LC/TQ systems was used to quantify over 100 PFAS across 14 chemical classes (Figure 1). More than 30 volatile PFAS were analyzed using an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8890"><strong>Agilent 8890 GC</strong></a> coupled to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7010D"><strong>7010D TQ</strong></a> and a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=DB-624"><strong>DB-624 column</strong></a>. MDCW / William &amp; Mary: The Effect Of Using Low-Bleed Columns In The First Dimension For Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatographic Analyses</strong></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Webb_MDCW_Poster_2026_1_5657991949.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><section><div><div><div><div><div><div><p>In gas chromatography, the presence of column bleed impacts peak data quality. As siloxanebased stationary phase components fragment, they release bleed artifacts into the mass spectrometer (MS), producing interference and decreasing signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) of analytes. <sup>1</sup> When using comprehensive twodimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC), a secondary column with an orthogonal stationary phase is used in providing improved separation between column bleed and analytes. However, it also introduces more stationary phase that can be degraded to produce more bleed artifacts.</p><p>The goal of this research was to define how replacing the primary column in a GC×GC-MS system impacts the resulting S/N and analyte identification quality, in order to clarify how column bleed impacts analytes that appear to be chromatographically resolved from column artifacts in GC×GC output. This will demonstrate the advantage that low-bleed columns can provide for future analyses.</p><h5><strong>Methods</strong></h5><p>Samples analyzed were the Century Mix2 , containing approximately 100 different analytes within different classes (i.e. Century Mix2) and a 52- component Indoor Air Standard. Both were assessed using a 5% phenyl/95% dimethylsiloxane standard column in the first dimension and a (50%-phenyl)-methylpolysiloxane standard column in the second dimension. Samples were then reanalyzed with a low-bleed column replacement in the first dimension.</p><p>Analysis of the samples was performed using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/37"><strong>Pegasus BT4D GC×GCTOFMS</strong></a> with a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/44"><strong>quad-jet dual-stage cryogenic modulator</strong></a><strong> </strong>(LECO Corporation). <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/41"><strong>ChromaTOF software</strong></a><strong> </strong>(LECO Corporation) was used to analyze the chromatographic data.</p><h4><strong>Conclusions</strong></h4><p>This work demonstrated that samples run with the low-bleed first dimension column showed a reduction in the presence of column bleed components identified and maintained or improved the quantitative signal-to-noise ratios of components compared to the samples run on standard first dimension columns. This showed that that low concentration analytes were more reliably detected in the absence of column bleed, even when contour plots showed physically resolved components. In the future, this can be applied to improve the resolution of complex samples and increase analyte signal.</p><h3><strong>3. Shimadzu: Dimethyl carbonate as a green organic modifier in supercritical fluid extraction of pesticide residue analysis in apple samples</strong></h3><ul><li>Technical note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/c190_e347_869b9e2ade.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>According to the Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) principles[1], a highly promising strategy to minimize the side effects of analytical methods involves replacing potentially toxic solvents and/or obtained by non-renewable sources with more environmentally friendly alternatives. In this frame, dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is an environmentally friendly, non-corrosive, safe handling, and biodegradable chemical, extensively used in several application fields, such as pharmaceuticals, coatings, and lithium-ion battery electrolytes [2]. Additionally, instead of the historical use of toxic and corrosive phosgene as a carbonate source, simple and direct synthesis routes from carbon dioxide (CO2) have been proposed [3]. Thus, also falling within the “carbon capture and utilization” processes, ensuring the reduction of atmospheric CO2 concentration and its conversion into useful chemical products.&nbsp;</p><p>Firstly introduced in the second edition of the GlaxoSmithKline’s solvent selection guide, DMC has been included among the “few issues” solvents, along with water [4]. Thereafter, it has attracted widespread attention as a valuable chemical and/or solvent, and substantial research efforts have been made in the scientific community. Its potential as a green alternative to conventional solvents in both reversed-phase liquid chromatography [5–7] and supercritical fluid chromatography [8] has been explored. The extraction capabilities of DMC toward different target molecules have been also investigated. In 2022, Alfieri et al. optimized an ultrasoundassisted extraction of two lignans from Linum species [9]. The extraction performances of a panel of green solvents and two natural deep eutectic solvents (in combination with water in a solvent/water ratio of 80:20) were tested versus methanol and chloroform (used for comparison with published studies). The results showed that, in terms of purity and recovery, DMC was the optimal media for the 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin extraction. DMC has been also employed in an in-syringe extraction coupled to solid phase extraction to assess nicotine in environmental water and sportspersons’ urine samples [10]. Extracts enriched in oleanolic acid were obtained by solid-liquid extraction of grape pomace using DMC compared to other tested solvents (ethyl acetate, acetone, n-butanol) [11]. In addition to the highest obtained recovery value, the lowest co-extraction of other matrix components was also achieved.&nbsp;</p><p>Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) represents a reliable alternative to conventional solvent-based extraction methods. Several advantages are provided when CO2 is employed as supercritical fluid due to its non-toxicity, non-flammability, abundancy, renewability (as a by-product of industrial processes, as fermentation or combustion), recyclability, and cost-effectiveness. Supercritical CO2 has a polarity similar to that of n-hexane; thus, the addition of a co-solvent is necessary for the extraction of polar molecules [12, 13].&nbsp;</p><p>This work aims to expand the use of DMC that, to the best of the author’s knowledge, is here firstly proposed as an organic modifier in SFE. The extraction efficiency and selectivity of DMC toward conventional solvents, such as acetonitrile (ACN) and bio-ethanol (EtOH) obtained from edible renewable feedstocks, has been evaluated for multi-residue analysis of pesticides (64 pesticides, representing diverse chemical classes, polarities, and molecular weights) in apple samples. Considering the sustainable and nontoxic nature of CO2 and DMC, the use of DMC in SFE represents a win-win combination. Thus, improving the overall sustainability and automation of the extraction process closely align with the GAC principles. Furthermore, in this research, always following the GAC principles, a low-pressure gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LP-GC-QqQMS) method was employed, allowing a greater sample loadability and a higher optimal linear velocity allowed by the vacuum conditions of the system, effectively reducing the analysis time at about 10 minutes [14, 15].</p><h4><strong>2. Materials and methods</strong></h4><h5><strong>2-3. Instrumentation</strong></h5><h5><strong>Low‑pressure gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The LP-GC-QqQMS analyses were performed using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GC-2010"><strong>GC-2010 Plus system</strong></a> (Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan) coupled with a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=8040"><strong>triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (TQ8040</strong></a>, Shimadzu). Injection was performed using an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=AOC-20i"><strong>AOC-20i autosampler</strong></a><strong> </strong>and<strong> </strong>a split/splitless injector (injection temperature 280 °C) equipped with a focus liner (volume: 810 μL). The injection was performed in splitless mode (3 μL) using the high-pressure injection mode function (290 kPa for 0.5 min).&nbsp;</p><p>To avoid that sub-ambient pressure conditions reach the injector, an uncoated column (0.48 m × 0.1 mm ID) was installed before the separation column, a non-polar Equity-5 [poly(5% diphenyl/95% dimethyl siloxane)] of the following dimension: 5 m × 0.53 mm ID × 0.53 μm df. Both the columns were provided by Merck KGaA. The oven was temperature programmed as follows: 40 °C (2 min) to 320 °C raised at 30 °C min−1. Helium was used as carrier gas with an average constant linear velocity of 100 cm s−1 (into the separation column).&nbsp;</p><p>Electron ionization was performed at 70 eV. The interface and ion source temperatures were 320 and 280 ˚C, respectively. The collision gas was argon at a pressure of 200 kPa. The targeted analyses were carried out in the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) acquisition mode (acquisition frequency: 3.3 Hz). To ensure univocal identification, two different MRM transitions (quantifier and qualifier) were monitored for each compound (Table S1). The SCAN analysis was performed with an acquisition frequency of 3.3 Hz and a mass range of 50–600 m/z. The GCMS Solution v.4.45 software (Shimadzu) was used for data collection and processing.</p><h4><strong>4. Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Under the optimized extraction conditions, the use of DMC as a co-solvent in SFE demonstrated promising performance in the analysis of pesticide residues in apple samples. The method achieved an average extraction yield of 85% across the 64 analyzed pesticides, spanning a broad range of chemical classes, polarities, and molecular weights. Notably, DMC provided cleaner extracts with significantly lower amounts of co-extracted matrix components compared to conventional solvents like ACN and EtOH. Despite the recovery for certain analytes being below 70%, the results remained within acceptable precision limits according to SANTE guidelines. Overall, DMC not only fulfills the analytical requirements for pesticide residue determination but also offers a greener, more sustainable alternative that supports enhanced instrument maintenance and aligns with the principles of GAC.</p><h3><strong>4. Thermo Fisher Scientific / ASMS: Improved detection capabilities for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) using GC Orbitrap MS</strong></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/po_004693_lsms_pcdd_fs_exploris_gc_efs_po004693_asms2026_na_en_68e4d9e8b3.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/F) analysis requires ultra-high sensitivity and selectivity due to their toxicity at trace levels. Through the integration of NVAEI source (NVAEI) with HRAM Thermo Scientific Orbitrap mass spectrometer, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/2419"><strong>Orbitrap Exploris GC S </strong></a>delivers mass resolution and accuracy that far exceed those required while delivering enhanced sensitivity required for pg/g (part per trillion (ppt)) detection within food and feed matrices.</p><h4><strong>Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Enhanced sensitivity of the NeverVent AEI ion source coupled to the Orbitrap Exploris GC S delivers accurate quantitation down to 2 fg/μL (10 fg on column) of TCDD while meeting analytical criteria required for Dioxin analysis compliance.&nbsp;</p><p>Response of 2 fg/μL (10 fg on column) of TCDD standard remained stable over a 185-injection sequence of food/feed extract, demonstrating robust performance of the NeverVent AEI at maintaining trace level sensitivity.&nbsp;</p><p>Good agreement in the analysis of food and feed extracts preformed by GC-HRMS magnetic sector demonstrates the Orbitrap Exploris GC S can deliver accurate quantitation at and below regulatory limits.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></section></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>

These compounds serve as essential feedstocks for the synthesis of plastics, resins, and textiles. Because even trace impurities can adversely affect downstream chemical reactions and product quality, rigorous analytical testing is required to ensure these intermediates meet strict commercial specifications.&nbsp;</p><p>ASTM D7504 is the industry-standard test method for determining the purity of, and trace impurities in, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detector (FID).1 This method is favored for its streamlined workflow; it utilizes effective carbon number (ECN) correction factors for area normalization. This eliminates the need for labor-intensive, multipoint calibrations for every individual impurity, allowing laboratories to calculate purity and quantify trace nonaromatics and aromatics with high precision.&nbsp;</p><p>The application scope of ASTM D7504 covers a wide array of aromatic liquids, including benzene, toluene, mixed xylenes, and styrene. To comply with the method's stringent performance requirements, the GC system must&nbsp;demonstrate:&nbsp;</p><ul><li><strong>High sensitivity: </strong>A limit of quantitation (LOQ) of at least 0.0006% by mass.</li><li><strong>Good resolution: </strong>Maintaining a valley-to-peak ratio of no more than 50% for critical separations (such as p-xylene and m-xylene).&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Strict precision: </strong>Highly reproducible peak areas to ensure accurate purity calculations.</li></ul><p>Implementing ASTM D7504 on a dual-channel GC/FID platform—where two independent analytical channels configured with identical injectors, columns, and detectors operate within a single GC oven—provides significant operational advantages:&nbsp;</p><ol><li>Enhanced laboratory throughput: By performing two injections simultaneously, the test lab can double its sample capacity per instrument, effectively reducing the cost-per-analysis and maximizing hardware ROI.&nbsp;</li><li>Method flexibility and redundancy: A dual-channel set up allows a lab to run different sample types (such as toluene on the front channel and xylene on the back) in a single oven cycle. Furthermore, it provides an immediate "back up" channel to maintain uptime during routine&nbsp;maintenance.&nbsp;</li></ol><p>For the system to be considered reliable, both channels should meet ASTM D7504 sensitivity, resolution, and precision requirements. In addition, both channels should yield consistent quantitative results for the same sample. The reproducibility limit (R) demonstrated in ASTM D7504 interlaboratory testing will be used to evaluate the result consistency between the two channels.</p><p>ASTM D7504 recommends helium and hydrogen as carrier gas. In China, major Chinese petrochemical companies often align their internal quality control standards directly with ASTM D7504 when testing for export of high-purity chemical intermediates. Because nitrogen is commonly used in China, they commonly adapt the ASTM D7504 method to use nitrogen carrier gas.&nbsp;</p><p>This application note demonstrates how dual-channel analysis on the Agilent 8860B GC, following ASTM D7504, delivers consistent and high-precision data using three types of carrier gas.</p><h4><strong>Experimental</strong></h4><p>An <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8860B"><strong>Agilent 8860B GC</strong></a><strong> </strong>was configured with dual split/splitless inlets and dual flame ionization detectors (FIDs). The sample introduction was made by dual <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7693A"><strong>Agilent 7693A automatic liquid samplers (ALS)</strong></a> with high density turrets (16-vial). The analytical parameters and consumables are summarized in Tables 1 and 2. Data acquisition and analysis were conducted using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=OpenLab+CDS"><strong>Agilent OpenLab CDS version 2.8</strong></a></p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The Agilent 8860B gas chromatography system configured with two identical analytical channels are applied for impurity analysis in monocyclic aromatic solvents using three carrier gases. Each analytical channel was evaluated according to the ASTM D7504 method in terms of resolution, sensitivity, quantitation precision, and recovery with satisfactory results. The quantitation results between the two channels are consistent with each other.&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Column resolution compounds pair demonstrated good separation with H/V no less than 5:1 for 300 ppm m-xylene and p-xylene solvent.&nbsp;</li><li>The LODs achieved for benzene on each analytical channel are less than 0.0001%, exceeding the 0.0002% LOD required by ASTM D7504.&nbsp;</li><li>The response and mass concentration precisions of most impurities in check standards are below 1%, meeting or exceeding the precision requirements in D7504.&nbsp;</li><li>Excellent recovery results, ranging from 93 to 105%, was achieved for added impurities, indicating good quantification accuracy based on the 8860B GC system.&nbsp;</li><li>The quantitation difference of all probe impurities between two channels is less than the reproducibility thresholds (R), demonstrating excellent across channel consistency</li></ul><p>Besides great instrument performance, the Agilent OpenLab CDS software can realize ECN based normalization for easy and fast quantitation and report generation. The 8860B dual channel GC system coupled with the OpenLab CDS software provides an accurate and reliable analysis of impurities in monocyclic aromatic solvents with satisfactory precision. Lab productivity can be improved significantly compared to the single channel analytical system.</p><h3><strong>2. Harynuk’s presentation, <strong>“Leveraging Local Libraries for Positively Parsimonious Peak Tables,”</strong> explores how custom mass spectral libraries can simplify and improve compound identification in complex GC×GC-(HR)MS datasets. GC×GC-MS is widely applied in petroleum, environmental, food/flavour, and omics research, where samples can contain hundreds or thousands of peaks. While expanded separation space, cleaner spectra, retention patterns, and high-resolution accurate-mass data provide strong identification capabilities, converting large datasets into coherent peak tables with consistent compound assignments across multiple samples remains challenging.</p><p>The presentation demonstrates the approach using a field pea study investigating how nitrogen availability influences plant metabolism and volatile organic compounds. A conventional workflow based on peak finding and library searching can generate very large peak tables and inconsistent assignments. Incorporating retention indices (RI) and LECO’s Identification Grading System (IGS) substantially reduces the number of questionable peaks. In one example, a pea sample containing <strong>789 detected peaks was reduced to 146 retained peaks</strong> after RI filtering and IGS scoring, producing a much more manageable dataset. However, conventional libraries still struggle with isomers and with compounds that repeatedly occur in a laboratory’s samples but cannot yet be confidently identified—the presentation calls these <strong>“unknown knowns.”</strong></p><p>Harynuk therefore proposes building a <strong>custom local HRMS library</strong> containing not only standards and confidently identified compounds, but also reproducible unknown features. To qualify for inclusion, a peak should have a high-quality spectrum, S/N &gt;100, chromatographic purity, occurrence in multiple technical replicates, an assigned retention index, and a unique identifier. Crucially, the exact chemical identity does not need to be known: an unknown but reproducible feature can receive an internal identifier such as “JJH-001” and be updated later as more information becomes available. This allows laboratories to retain analytically meaningful recurring signals instead of discarding them simply because a definitive library identification is unavailable.</p><p>The results show that combining a custom library with local RI data and IGS filtering improves both the consistency and efficiency of peak-table generation. Compounds with IGS scores ≥3.0 were generally assigned the same identification across samples when the custom library was used, while reliance on NIST and IGS alone produced less consistent results. After correcting only a small number of problematic identifications per peak table, retention-index errors for custom-library entries dropped dramatically—in the evaluated samples, typically to around <strong>0.5–1.9 RI units</strong>. The key recommendation is therefore straightforward: <strong>build a custom MS library, include recurring “unknown knowns,” collect local retention-index data, and apply identification-quality filters</strong> to obtain cleaner and more consistent GC×GC-MS peak tables with substantially less manual effort.</p><h3><strong>3. With the increasing use of simplified sample preparation methods such as QuEChERS, contamination of the inlet by matrix components is unavoidable, and frequent inlet maintenance, including liner replacement, is often required. Because this maintenance involves both cooling the inlet and waiting for temperature re-stabilization afterward, it can become a major source of instrument downtime.&nbsp;</p><p>The newly developed Multi-Mode Inlet (MMI) incorporates Shimadzu’s proprietary thermal insulation technology, providing excellent temperature stability together with rapid heating and cooling performance. While maintaining high data compatibility with conventional split/splitless inlets, the MMI significantly reduces the waiting time associated with inlet maintenance.</p><p>In this Application News, simultaneous multiresidue analysis in SPL mode is demonstrated for four food matrices with different characteristics - spinach, orange, avocado, and ginger - using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMS-TQ+8040+RX"><strong>GCMS-TQ 8040 RX triple quadrupole</strong> </a>GC-MS/MS equipped with the MMI.</p><h4><strong>Data Analysis&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>LabSolutions Insight, a quantitative data processing software package designed for high-throughput sample analysis, was used for data analysis, with Peakintelligence for GCMS applied as the peak integration algorithm (Fig. 6). Peakintelligence is an AI-based waveform processing algorithm that uses machine learning to emulate the peak processing performed by experienced analysts. An issue arises when the method attempts to analyse isobaric compounds, which cannot be distinguished by MS, and as a result labs must rely upon physical separation via column phase chemistry.</p><p>As GC-MS techniques continue to be adopted by laboratories, there is a need for more tools that consider mass data for analytes when optimising large panel separations. The virtual chromatographic modelling tool used in this study is built with mass spectrum data for compounds included in libraries. When operating in “MS mode”, the software identifies isobaric compounds and prioritises their separation when making recommendations regarding column phase and method conditions. For those using non-mass selective detection methods, the tool is easily toggled to “FID mode” for users interested in resolving all compounds, regardless of specific mass, allowing for flexibility in instrumentation. Antisense oligonucleotides were examined under optimized chromatographic conditions, using a design-of-experiments strategy to evaluate how ion-pairing reagents influence both LC separation and downstream MS performance. The platform was further applied to antibody–drug conjugates, combining RPC with Orbitrap mass spectrometry to support multi-level characterization. Intact, sub-unit, and bottom-up analyses enabled drug-to-antibody ratio determination alongside detailed PTM profiling — including glycosylation, oxidation, and deamidation — under native and stress conditions. However, untargeted metabolomics and downstream data analysis workflows are vulnerable to signal contamination by non-biological variance associated with sample collection and handling and instrumental drift, which can obscure meaningful biological patterns.&nbsp;</p><h4><strong>Objective/Aims</strong></h4><p>The goal of this study is to identify and quantify non-biological variance in untargeted volatile metabolomics arising from sample collection procedures and instrumental drift.</p><h4><strong>Methods</strong></h4><p>Breath samples were collected and transferred onto Thermal Desorption Tubes (TDTs) in technical duplicates. TDTs were stored at 4˚C and analyzed using two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/37"><strong>GC×GC– TOFMS</strong></a>).</p><h4><strong>Conclusions</strong></h4><p>Instrument drift and other non-biological factors can strongly affect metabolomics data. However, PFAS are also extremely stable substances that resist degradation and accumulate in the environment, which has led to concerns about their effects on humans. Since eliminating sources of PFAS is essential to prevent them from accumulating in the environment and in living organisms, many countries are passing laws that restrict the production, distribution, and use of PFAS in products. For example, the EU POPs Regulation sets a permitted threshold of up to 0.025 mg/kg (25 ppb) for certain PFAS (including PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS) in substances, mixtures, or articles1) . EN 17681 defines standard test methods for PFAS analysis in textiles2),3) .&nbsp;</p><p>In a previous <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_01108_en_e04fe25939.pdf"><strong>Application News, No. 01-01108</strong></a>, an example of analyzing volatile and nonvolatile PFAS in textiles using LC/MS/MS and GC/MS/MS based on this standard was introduced. This study shows an example of trace analysis of volatile PFAS (Table1) in textiles using the newly developed GCMS-TQ RX series equipped with the Multi-Mode Injection Unit (MMI).</p><h4><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMS-TQ8040+RX"><strong>GCMS-TQ8040 RX&nbsp;</strong></a></h4><p>Delivering highly sensitive multi-component simultaneous analysis, the system improves operational efficiency through Analytical Intelligence , while also providing performance as a single GC-MS. The GCMS-TQ RX Series is a versatile triple quadrupole GC-MS that demonstrates high performance across a wide range of application fields. By combining it with the newly developed Multi-Mode Injection Unit (MMI), multiple injection methods are supported and analytical capability is further expanded.</p><h4><strong>Multi-Mode Injection Unit (MMI)&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The Multi-Mode Injection Unit (MMI) supports a wide range of injection modes in a single unit, including split/splitless (SPL), programmable temperature vaporization (PTV), large-volume injection (LVI), direct injection, and thermal desorption/extraction (TD/TE). Dedicated software with an intuitive user interface enables easy method creation and seamless method transfer, simplifying analytical workflows. In this Application News, use of the MMI enables a threefold increase the injection volume compared with conventional injection methods, while maintaining peak shape.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Using the GCMS-TQ8040 RX and the MMI, volatile PFAS in textiles were analyzed. The results showed that all compounds measured in this study could be analyzed at 25 ppb or below. Furthermore, in the spike recovery test at the EU POPs regulatory limit of 25 ppb, recoveries were within 80 to 120 % for all compounds, showing good results. By increasing the injection volume with the MMI, trace levels of volatile PFAS can be measured even with the standard GCMS-TQ8040 RX model.</p><h3><strong>3. While this is a key technique in the analysis of PFAS, there are classes of volatile and semi-volatile PFAS that do not chromatograph well using LC and require the use of gas chromatography (GC) to be successfully analyzed. Classes of PFAS that favor GC analysis include, but are not limited to, fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH), fluorotelomer acrylates (FTAcr), fluorotelomer methacrylates (FTMAC), and fluorotelomer acetates (FTOAc). Additionally, there are classes that can be analyzed using both LC and GC techniques, including sulfonamides (PFSA) and sulfonamidoethanols (PFSE).&nbsp;</p><p>All of these compounds are considered precursor compounds that terminally transform into the most widely studied PFAS, perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA). Not only are they precursors in the synthesis of PFCA and PFSA end products, they are also intentionally used in products such as food packaging and textiles to impart grease and water proofing qualities.&nbsp;</p><p>These precursor compounds are also discharged into the environment through similar routes as their end products (landfills, manufacturing waste, firefighting foams, etc), but also through volatilization, transport and deposition through the atmosphere either in the gas phase or bound to particulates. Like most PFAS, not much is known about the human toxicity of these particular PFAS, although some animal and in vitro studies do point to similar health effects as more commonly studied PFCAs and PFSAs, including liver and kidney toxicity, endocrine disruption and negative immune effects.1-4 Furthermore, their ability to transform in the environment to PFCAs and PFSAs, which are known to have toxic health implications, make them of concern.&nbsp;</p><p>GC-MS/MS analysis for the volatile and semi-volatile GC amenable PFAS provides an additional tool in the workflow of PFAS sample analysis, increasing the comprehensiveness of sample characterization. In this application note, the development of an atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) coupled to tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (MS/MS) method will be presented. This approach could integrate seamlessly with existing LC-MS/MS workflows, allowing labs to extend compound coverage without requiring changes to established sample preparation protocols. Performance for all compounds was found to be optimal with the use of a siltek deactivated inlet liner and a 30 m x 0.25 mm ID, 0.50 µm Rtx-200 column. This configuration allows for the injection of samples pre-extracted for LC-MS/MS analysis that are in mainly methanol and water, allowing labs to generate additional insights without increasing sample prep burden. Method LLOQs ranged from 0.005 – 5.0 ng/mL, with most compounds being below 0.10 ng/mL, delivering robust performance across compound classes, indicating the method can be used for trace level applications. Overall, APGC-MS/MS adds a complementary capability to LC-MS/MS methods, allowing labs to comprehensively assess PFAS contamination for better understanding and informed regulatory or product safety decisions. Further application notes will demonstrate the use of this method in environmental and food packaging samples, highlighting how labs can gain more complete PFAS insights while leveraging existing workflows.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>

Since the gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (GC-MS) provides excellent performance in qualitative analysis of volatile compounds, it is used to measure various aroma components that make up an odor. However, due to the diversity of aroma compounds and their wide concentration range, which extends from the ppm to the ppt order, an analytical method that allows efficient measurement of these substances is demanded.&nbsp;</p><p>Non-targeted analysis by scan measurement is an effective tool for comprehensive profiling, but in many cases, it is difficult to identify the trace components that make a significant contribution to aroma due to the limits of instrument sensitivity and matrix interference. On the other hand, although widetarget analysis by the MRM (Multiple Reaction Monitoring) mode using GC-MS/MS offers high sensitivity and selectivity for several hundred target components, MRM lacks a search capability for unknown components.</p><p>Therefore, this Application News article reports a technique that satisfies both comprehensive non-targeted search and highsensitivity detection of trace components in a single analysis by combining the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=8040+RX"><strong>GCMS-TQ 8040 RX</strong></a>, which supports simultaneous data acquisition in simultaneous multi-component analysis measurements by scan measurement and the MRM mode, and the Smart Aroma Database for use in aroma analysis. In addition, in this experiment, the thermal desorption (TD) mode of the Multi-Mode Injection Unit (MMI) was adopted for sample introduction. This enablesintroduction of componentstapped on the adsorbent without using a dedicated TD device, thereby achieving a simplified system configuration.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This Application News article showed that it is possible to achieve both a comprehensive non-targeted analysis of food aroma and a high-sensitivity wide-target analysis of trace components in a single analysis, without carrying out complicated operations, by simultaneous scan/MRM measurement combining the GCMSTQ8040 RX and the Smart Aroma Database. This article also demonstrated that use of the Multi-Mode Injection Unit (MMI) enables measurements in the thermal desorption (TD) mode without using dedicated TD instrumentation, and also allows a flexible response in case of budgetary or installation space limitations. A comprehensive aroma evaluation based on this approach will facilitate the discovery of important aroma components that were easily overlooked in the past, and is expected to make important contributions to product development and quality control in the food and beverage industries.</p><h3><strong>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Implementing EPA OTM-50 for PFAS destruction monitoring by TD-GC-MS/MS</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/an_004773_gc_td_gc_ms_epa_otm_50_pfas_an04773_na_en_99fd5fc528.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are used across a broad range of industrial and consumer applications. As PFAS-containing materials are treated or destroyed, incomplete decomposition can generate volatile fluorinated compounds, including short-chain and ultra-volatile species. These volatile compounds are important because they may provide evidence of incomplete mineralization once emitted from stationary sources.</p><p>EPA OTM-50 was developed to provide a consistent approach for collecting and quantitatively analyzing target VFCs from emissions originating from known industrial products with incomplete thermal destruction. The EPA method uses passivated stainlesssteel canisters followed by GC-MS analysis and is applicable to gas samples collected from industrial source ducts, vents, stacks, and related emission points.&nbsp;</p><p>The method is performance-based, allowing laboratories flexibility in GC column selection, GC conditions, and MS conditions, provided that GC-MS remains the basis for separation and quantitation and the required performance criteria are met. This flexibility is important because OTM-50 analytes span a challenging volatility range and may occur in complex matrices containing CO2 , water vapor, acid gases, and other volatile organic compounds.&nbsp;</p><p>Gas chromatography-based approaches are well suited to volatile and neutral fluorinated compounds. Thermal desorption enables preconcentration of trace-level analytes from air samples, improving sensitivity and enabling detection at relevant levels for environmental studies.&nbsp;</p><p>This application note describes implementation of EPA OTM-50 using cryogen-free thermal desorption coupled to triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS. The workflow addresses key analytical challenges: trapping ultra-volatile compounds such as CF4 , managing high levels of CO2 and humidity, achieving sub-ppbv sensitivity, and maintaining repeatable quantitative performance in support of PFAS destruction monitoring.</p><h4><strong>Experimental&nbsp;</strong></h4><h5><strong>Instrument configuration&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The analytical system consisted of a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=6&amp;search=UNITY-Kori-CIA"><strong>Markes UNITY</strong></a><strong>-Kori-CIA Advantage HL-xr thermal desorption system</strong> coupled to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/485"><strong>TSQ 9610 Triple Quadrupole GC-MS/MS</strong></a> equipped with a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=3&amp;search=nevervent"><strong>Thermo Scientific™ NeverVent™ AEI Ion Source</strong></a> (Figure 1). The Markes thermal desorber configuration included cryogen-free focusing, controlled canister introduction, and water and CO2 management strategies.</p><h4><strong>Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This work demonstrates implementation of EPA OTM-50 using thermal desorption coupled to triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS for the analysis of volatile fluorinated compounds in air, with solutions helping to solve key analytical challenges for this type of analysis.&nbsp;</p><ul><li><strong>Alignment with EPA OTM-50 scope:</strong> supports canisterbased analysis of VFCs emitted from stationary sources, including compounds associated with incomplete PFAS destruction.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Cryogen-free preconcentration:</strong> enables practical trapping and transfer of volatile analytes without reliance on liquid cryogens, reducing operational complexity.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Improved selectivity through MS/MS: </strong>SRM acquisition on the TSQ 9610 Triple Quadrupole GC-MS/MS improves confidence in target identification and quantitation in complex emission matrices.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Dual-method strategy for broad volatility coverage:</strong> separate sample volumes for CF4 and the remaining VFCs enable analysis across the challenging OTM-50 volatility range.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>CO2 and humidity management:</strong> controlled dilution, selective trap purging, and Kori-xr water management address two of the most significant matrix challenges in stationary source emissions.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Robust quantitative performance: </strong>calibration across 0.1–100 ppbv (0.125–50 ppbv for CF4 ) showed R2 ≥ 0.998 for reported compounds or &lt; 20% RSD for Average Response Factor, with pptv MDLs and repeatability generally consistent with OTM-50 precision expectations.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Industrial relevance: </strong>the workflow supports chemical manufacturing, PFAS treatment, and waste management facilities seeking defensible data to evaluate destruction efficiency and identify products of incomplete destruction.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>Overall, the combination of Markes thermal desorption technology with the Thermo Scientific TSQ 9610 Triple Quadrupole GC-MS/MS provides a practical, selective, and robust analytical approach for laboratories implementing EPA OTM-50 for volatile PFAS and VFC monitoring in air.</p><h3><strong>4. Waters Corporation: Analysis of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether Flame Retardants in Environmental Matrices Using Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization GC-MS/MS</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/720009524_en_58a948f96a.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><h4><strong>Benefits&nbsp;</strong></h4><ul><li>The performance of atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC ™) on Xevo™ TQ Absolute Mass Spectrometer for the analysis of PBDEs is equal-to or better-than traditional analysis using electron impact magnetic sector making it well suited for use in the most challenging regulatory and standard methods.</li><li>The ability of APGC to tolerate high carrier gas flow helps improve method performance for the most challenging members of this class inlcuding BDE 209 which reduces the need for maintenance and reanalysis of samples.</li><li>Operator training is reduced to weeks from months through conversion of the method from a magnetic sector to tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer.</li><li>Use of a single, inexpensive, readily available gas for chromatographic separation, ionization and MS/MS fragmentation provides a simpler, more sustainable system.</li></ul><p>With the 2001 signing of the Stockholm Convention, the stage was set for global harmonization of efforts to monitor for POPs in the environment.1 By 2004, when countries began implementing the convention, measures aimed at reducing or eliminating intentional and unintentional release of POPs into the environment were supported by annexes that defined the different chemical classes of highest interest which included PBDEs. To date, 185 states plus the European Union have joined in this effort which includes requirements for monitoring for POPs in multiple environmental matrices. Because the implications of unintentional or intentional noncompliance may be subject to enforcement action, high confidence data is needed to support surveillance and reporting efforts. Furthermore, high sensitivity analysis is required due to the possibility of steadily increasing trace levels of PBDEs across years of time through transport in the environment that tends to increase concentrations of persistent organic pollutants such as these in cooler Arctic regions of the globe through the grasshopper effect.2 These requirements initially led to the development of gas chromatography electron ionization high resolution magnetic sector based analytical methods. The performance of EI GC-HRMS in the hands of a well-trained operator and a lab with rigorous quality control procedures has proven to provide the sensitivity and specificity required of the forensic data used in legal actions, for compliance reporting and for providing the greatest protection to populations and the environment.&nbsp;</p><p>However, GC-HRMS has several limitations, including extensive education and training requirements, slow acquisition speeds, and significant laboratory space demands. In contrast, more modern techniques such as tandem quadrupole (TQ) mass spectrometry (MS/MS) offer broad improvements in these areas. Additionally, limitations imposed by EI such as frequent source maintenance and shortcomings caused by carrier gases other than helium hamper this time-honored technique. The more recent combination of APCI with TQ has demonstrated promise in overcoming these limitations while providing data of equivalent confidence to EI GCHRMS.&nbsp;</p><p>After having been deployed in many labs, GC-APCI has continued to contribute to the study of PBDEs in multiple matrices and applications. An evaluation of the first generation of GC-APCI MS/MS, analyzing PBDEs in marine and food samples, reported higher response for higher brominated (Br8-10) congeners than GC-EI-HRMS.3 Later work reported GC-APCI MS/MS LODs comparable or better than EI MS/MS for plasma extracts.4 Recent work reported on the use of GC-APCI HRMS (QTof) as part of the continuation of a 20 year study analyzing aquatic organisms to evaluate environmental PBDE trends.5 In this work, 24 PBDEs plus hexabromobiphenyl were analyzed on a XevoTM TQ Absolute Tandem Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer using the APGC ionization source.</p><h4><strong>Experimental</strong></h4><ul><li><strong>GC system: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8890"><strong>8890 (Agilent Technologies, Inc.)&nbsp;</strong></a></li><li><strong>Column: </strong>Rtx®-1614, 15 m x 0.25 mm ID x 0.10 µm film (Restek Corporation)</li><li><strong>MS system: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/554"><strong>Xevo TQ Absolute Mass Spectrometer</strong></a></li><li><strong>Software: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/1544"><strong>waters_connect™</strong></a> for Quantitation Software</li></ul><h4><strong>Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>An all-nitrogen configuration for APGC on Xevo TQ Absolute Mass Spectrometer was successfully applied to the analysis of PBDEs in environmental matrices by adapting a reference method previously used on magnetic sector EI GC-HRMS. All performance criteria were equal-to or better-than those typically achieved by magnetic sector which demonstrates feasibility of GC-APCI MS/MS as an alternative for the most challenging regulatory and standard analytical methods. Furthermore, the change from a vacuum source to the atmospheric ionization source makes the use of high nitrogen carrier gas flow practical which has advantages for operating cost versus helium while achieving similar chromatographic separation and sensitivity. The move to tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry from high resolution mass spectrometry updates the method for improved performance measures such as higher acquisition speeds and high specificity MS/MS while also requiring reduced training time and expertise as compared with magnetic sectors.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>
