These stains can cause issues, such as reacting with lubricating oil or causing poor plating adhesion. This Application News presents a case study of measuring stainlike deposits found on the surface of metal machined partsfor the transportation industry using the infrared-Raman microscope AIRsight.ConclusionThe analysis of stain-like deposits discovered on the surface of metal machined parts for the transportation industry using AIRsight was introduced. Raman spectroscopy allowed the qualitative identification of the stain components, which was difficult with infrared spectroscopy due to the surface's unevenness. AIRsight is very useful for the qualitative analysis of unknown samples by allowing rapid switching and measurement of both infrared and Raman spectroscopy without moving the sample. Monoethanolamine-triazine (MEA-triazine) is one of the most used scavengers for H2S. Industrially, there are many challenges in measuring MEA-triazine concentration in aqueous solutions. This application note aims to develop a mid-infrared (mid-IR) method using an Agilent DialPath transmission module to measure the concentration of MEA-triazine in aqueous solutions. The analytical method described meets the requirements for quantifying MEA-triazine with different solvents, providing time savings, ease of use, and reduced susceptibility to pipetting errors due to viscosity.ConclusionThe Agilent Cary 630 FTIR spectrometer with DialPath module proves to be a highly effective, accurate, and user-friendly method for the quantitative analysis of MEA-triazine in aqueous solutions. The technique's excellent linearity and robustness against additives such as MeOH and IPA highlight its reliability. The DialPath module's innovative design simplifies the measurement process, enhances sample throughput, and reduces common issues such as leaks and air bubbles. This method offers a significant improvement over traditional analytical techniques, providing a practical solution for both field and laboratory measurements in the oil and gas industry.<h4>4. Metrohm: <style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_122_download_da32ea61a1.pdf">Quantification of water in lactose with the OMNIS NIRS Analyzer</a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul><h5>Fast, non-destructive determination of water with NIRS</h5>Lactose is an important pharmaceutical product. Approximately 60% to 70% of pharmaceutical dosage forms contain lactose [1], and it is one of the largest pharmaceutical excipients by volume. Lactose can be used as a bulk filler for pharmaceutical tablets, as a binder to provide more strength to a dosage form, and it can also be added to facilitate the flow of a formulation during the production process. Moisture in lactose is undesirable at high levels as it causes the material to become sticky and bind to itself, forming hard clusters that may be difficult to break apart. USP specifies the water content range in lactose monohydrate from 4.5 % to 5.5 % [2]. The analysis of water in lactose is usually done with time-consuming methods. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a faster alternative. This Application Note shows the determination of water content in lactose with NIRS.CONCLUSIONThis Application Note demonstrates the feasibility to determine water content in lactose quickly and easily. NIR spectroscopy offers users a fast, cost-effective, and highly accurate alternative to other standard testing methods. Additionally, NIRS analysis is nondestructive, completely reagent-free, and gives results in only a few seconds.

<h3>The Science</h3>At the subatomic level, electrons move so fast that attosecond strobe pulses are required to capture their motion. Researchers performed the first all X-ray attosecond-pump attosecond-probe experiment in condensed phase to observe electron motion, defining a method for spectral snapshots free of nuclear motion. The researchers established a technique called all X-ray attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (AX-ATAS)—which involves synchronized attosecond X-ray pulse pairs—to study the electronic response to valence ionization in liquid water. It provides evidence that the splitting is due to dynamics and not two structural motifs, as previously thought. The methodology also enables future studies of the origin and evolution of reactive species produced by radiation-induced processes. As these processes are initiated by electronic motion at attosecond timescales, this technique is critical for understanding ultrafast reactions.<h3>Summary</h3>The all X-ray attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (AX-ATAS) experiment was performed on liquid water using synchronized attosecond X-ray pulse pairs from the Linac Coherent Light Source operating in a harmonic configuration, omega (ω) and 2ω. The X-rays were focused on a thin, flat sheet of liquid water. The ω pump pulse ionized the valence band of liquid water, and the 2ω probe pulse interrogated the electronic structure.The researchers’ model showed that the polarization response in condensed-phase media observed with AX-ATAS is confined to the sub-femtosecond timescale, such that the resulting experimental spectra are free from nuclear motion. The researchers were then able to model the X-ray absorption spectra of the instantaneous post-ionization electronic structure using multi-reference restricted-active-space configuration interaction with fixed nuclear geometry. The findings, reported in the journal Science,&nbsp;provide a new window into the electronic structure of molecules in the liquid phase on a timescale previously unattainable with X-rays. The new technique reveals the immediate electronic response when a target is hit with an X-ray, an important step in understanding the effects of prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation. This research opens the doors for future work with more complex radiation-induced chemical solutions, like those found in legacy nuclear tank waste.Experimental work used the resources of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Attosecond X-rays Provide a Snapshot of Liquid Water

"I like the non-violence of the environmental chemistry field. We're trying to help society," says analytical chemist Martin Palušák from the Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation, who is currently working on methods for reusing metals from mine water.Martin grew up in the popularity of Jurassic Park. He wanted to travel the world and discover dinosaurs, but over time he found chemistry and physics more interesting. "My chemist and I went to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/62">Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry</a> of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/10">CAS</a>. We went to a lab where they were studying the structures of proteins. It was in the basement, with an old couch against the wall and a shelf full of fantasy books next to it. And I thought, I have to do this. That's when I decided that I wanted to be a scientist," recalls Martin, who returned to the Institute of Chemical Biology as part of his bachelor's thesis. "It was a valuable experience, there are real experts working there," he says. "During my PhD I worked here two days a week. And then my wife was pregnant, so we decided to go back to our family. Everything goes better with the help of grandmothers," explains Martin.Martin values the freedom of self-realization and the opportunity to gain experience abroad. "We have a lot of international collaborations, I have gotten to places I would never have thought of in my life. I was in the oceanography lab. They had round windows on the door, just like on a ship. There were aquariums full of fish or even coral. Of course, we don't have that in the Czech Republic."Did his childhood dream come true? For example, there is a lot of debate these days about whether or not there is global warming and who is to blame. We look for the facts and use them to decide on solutions to improve the current situation. In our case, for example, by treating water better or using neglected resources."The fact that Martin is passionate about chemistry is evidenced by the fact that he performed chemical experiments at schools and then taught organic chemistry and ran laboratories at the PhD level. "When I think about it, it was definitely an important experience. It made me realize how much I didn't know. Nowadays, teaching is no longer compulsory, but I think everyone who wants to work in a university should try it as a career."Did his childhood dream come true? He travels the world and discovers. Not dinosaurs, but analytical methods.From the lab straight to the longboardAnd what's Martin up to after work? He rides from the peaks of the Jizera Mountains on a longboard. He has no brakes, he controls everything with his body. "Now I take more care of myself for my family. It is a prestigious international Horizon Europe Twinning project. The main idea is to form a team and exchange know-how through the world.And what is the project about? The Czech Republic has been one of the main producers of uranium in recent years. After mining, there are many sites with high levels of radioactive substances or rare heavy metals. However, these can still be considered strategic raw materials. "The first problem that SURRI is addressing is how to clean up the mine water. This is because a huge amount of money is spent to ensure that contaminated water does not flow into the environment. But by cleaning the water, we concentrate strategic materials such as uranium or heavy metals. The next problem is how to access and reuse these valuable resources. The options are biological or chemical. I am working on electrochemical methods."Extracting metals from mine waterTo a layman, what Martin is doing can be described as having two magnets that can attract certain chemicals, but instead of magnetism, electricity is used. "Our partner, the University of Southampton, has a lot of experience in this and that helps us transfer their methods to our conditions. And it was an English university that was almost excluded because of Brexit. And then we have partnerships with Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Granada, and in the Czech Republic we work with the national company Diamo. "Ideally, SURRI will be followed by another project that would integrate our technologies into site-specific operations. I would like to be involved in this. I appreciate the fact that I write interesting projects," Martin explains enthusiastically."For example, when I came from Prague, I didn't know how to write projects. At CXI TUL, I was immediately involved in all the processes and they helped me get collaborations going pretty quickly. So far, my projects haven't worked out well. I am at the beginning of my career. But I'm still trying. It's probably best to take the plunge and not be afraid to work on it again and again. That's what I'm free to do here."For CXI TUL and across half the countryAnd where does Martin see himself in five years? "I would like to go back to my PhD studies, but now we are about to have another child, so it will be slower," he calculates, adding in one breath that he would like to stay at CXI TUL, simply because he is working with leading capacities in the field of environmental chemistry. "For example, there are scientists working here who do not hesitate to commute to Liberec from Prague every day," he says.

The automotive industry mainly focuses on the transition from petrol-fueled to electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce emissions; however, the generation of energy and energy-intensive industrial processes are also important sources of emissions. Here, other ways of reducing CO2 emissions might be feasible, and in the center of current debate stands the use of (ideally green) hydrogen and its combustion in hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cells are one of the key technological developments as there is no emission other than water. In addition, hydrogen can be created using renewable energies and can be transported with low effort due to its low density of only 70.85 g·L-1 when liquified.A typical hydrogen fuel cell consists of two electrodes (anode and cathode) and a polymeric electrolyte membrane (PEM) as shown in Figure 1. Typically, the electrode is made from fluorinated polymers to allow for chemical and mechanical stability and coated with a catalyst. Platinum is the catalyst material offering the highest efficiency; however, it is expensive. To reduce the production cost, improving the platinum coating technology and monitoring potential degradation by means of metal release into the water produced in the process are important. Due to the use of material blends, different trace metals as well as other non-metal contaminants must be monitored.In general, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is the preferred analytical technique for the analysis of metals and related contaminants down to sub ng·L-1 levels. However, non-metals such as phosphorous or sulfur are challenging to analyze using ICP-MS due to a combination of their usually elevated ionization potentials and significant spectral interferences. Current hydrogen fuel cell technology uses mineral acids, like sulfuric acid, as electrolytes with a platinum catalyst on the electrodes (PAFC). Thus, it is important to monitor the concentrations of these elements at low concentrations. Oxygen- and nitrogen-based polyatomic interferences are usually of greatest concern for these analytes, but other polyatomic interference, like 31P1H+, may lead to false positive results and must be removed.Another challenge is the analysis of fluorine, which is also a key analyte for monitoring degradation of the PEM. Fluorine has the third highest first ionization potential of any element in the periodic table (behind neon and helium). In addition, its only naturally occurring isotope, 19F, falls into a severely interfered mass range, mainly due to the interferences generated by naturally abundant ions such as H3O+ and peak tailing of H2O+. To overcome these challenges, fluorine can be measured indirectly after mixing the sample with a solution containing barium. This results in the formation of 138Ba19F+ in the plasma, allowing the fluorine concentration to be measured interference free via m/z 157. Because of the required setup, the analysis of fluorine has to be conducted in a separate measurement and cannot be combined with the analysis of the other contaminants.In this study, a Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQe ICP-MS was used for the analysis. The paper demonstrates that with the use of proper standards, quantitative elemental profiling with the so-called LA-ICP-MS method is a promising tool for criminal investigations, linking an unknown piece of plastic evidence to known reference materials.The paper constitutes an important step in the development of a validated model that can be used in court cases. It would, for instance, link a piece of duct tape found at a crime scene to a tape roll found at a suspect's home. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is considerably less sensitive and infrared spectroscopy (IR) or isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) provide a less specific profile.<h4>Calculating likelihood ratios</h4>In the study now published in Forensic Chemistry, the research team examined large datasets of plastic objects: tapes, electrical wires, tubing, and jerrycans using LA-ICP-MS. They then applied different machine learning models and compared them with traditional statistical methods to improve the classification and comparison of polymer evidence.The study enables the calculation of likelihood ratios that represent the probability of the evidence. They are calculated by dividing the probability that samples originate from the same source by the probability that they are from different sources. This can be used to quantify the possible connection between a material found at the crime scene and evidence confiscated from a suspect, or reference data.The research is part of the Forensic Attribution for CWA INtelliGence (FACING) project, a collaboration between the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) of the University of Amsterdam and TNO Defence, Safety &amp; Security. The research was performed in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, United States) and the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI, The Netherlands). The FACING project is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Defence<h4>Abstract of the paper</h4>LA-ICP-MS is a powerful technique for obtaining a forensic elemental profile of polymer evidence materials. However, the lack of homogeneous polymer reference standards hampers database creation and reliably matching a sample to a specific source. Therefore, the current study aims to evaluate the strength of evidence of forensic polymer comparisons by applying a matrix-matched reference standard with known concentrations for elements of interest. Four datasets of tapes, electrical wires, tubing, and jerrycans were compiled using LA-ICP-MS. It was found that quantification with the new PVC standard or by simply using the response of one element as internal standard significantly reduced the between-run variation. For each class of polymeric materials, characteristic elements could be identified with PCA and LDA. To facilitate classification, elemental concentrations were found to be typical for specific colors and types of polymeric materials. For forensic comparison, a score-based Bayesian likelihood ratio model and the t-test overlap method performed better than the feature-based model and 4-sigma criterion, in terms of rates of misleading evidence. Normalization to 13C and quantification with the PVC standard with and without prior normalization to 13C slightly reduced rates of misleading evidence. The t-test method showed an overall average false inclusion rate of only 0.45% and a false exclusion rate of 2.4%. Maximum calibrated likelihood ratios of 0.014 to 1778 were found for the tape dataset. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that with the use of proper standards, quantitative elemental profiling with LA-ICP-MS is a promising tool for forensic classification and comparison of polymers.

But if you give people the power to understand more deeply where the lead is located and what the risks and costs might be, you give them the power to make decisions to keep themselves and their families safe.”<h4>An Immediate Impact</h4>A few years later, a new, even more daunting problem appeared on Lieberman’s radar—not from the news but from a contact in the coroner’s office in Indianapolis.“We began hearing about ‘overdose epidemics,“ where paramedics were responding to as many as 20 calls a day for drug overdose–related emergencies, many of them from the very same block,” she recalled. “Something completely new had entered the drug supply, and people were unaware of what they were taking.”The problem, it turned out, was statewide. Drug overdose deaths across Indiana had quadrupled between 2000 and 2014. Especially concerning was the arrival of new synthetic opioids. Deaths in Indiana related to these drugs increased 600 percent between 2012 and 2016. The major culprit was fentanyl, a drug similar to morphine but 50 to 100 times more powerful. (For most people, a dose of just two milligrams—a fraction of the weight of a drop of water—could prove fatal.)But the problem was more difficult than just weeding out fentanyl. The problem was the way the drug supply fluctuated, with new, unfamiliar, unmarked substances appearing unexpectedly. Then Naxos Neighbors collects them and returns them to Lieberman’s lab for further analysis that reveals a real-time picture of the current drug supply.Joanne Kelley Cogdell, CEO of Naxos Neighbors, pointed out that “the most important people who have the most accurate and timely data on the drug supply are people who use drugs. Then, in 2023, Lieberman and Cogdell were awarded the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lucyinstitute.nd.edu/the-2023-lucy-societal-impact-awards/">2023 Next Changemaker Award</a> from Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society and the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://indianactsi.org/community/chep/trailblazer-award/">Trailblazer Award</a> from the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, both of which provided additional funding to support their ongoing efforts.Lieberman’s lab is using these resources to develop methods to analyze used strips for more than 70 types of drugs. The lab relays its findings back to Naxos Neighbors, which shares alerts with law enforcement, first responders, medical care providers, and community organizations to inform them about what substances they may encounter in their work.“Alerts and real-time data collection are critical because the drug supply changes so quickly,” Lieberman said. Small changes in the data can inform critical decisions that occur during or after an overdose.“Although in most overdoses, there is an opportunity to intervene and save the person’s life, first responders need a picture of what a person who has overdosed may have taken,” Lieberman said. “When paramedics show up, they can use an overdose-reversing drug like Narcan. Then, the person might start breathing but not wake up. So responders could give multiple doses of Narcan, not realizing that another drug such as xylazine caused the overdose.”“When someone seeks addiction recovery help,” Lieberman said, “that person may think they are addicted to a particular substance, such as heroin, but they may not realize they were also addicted to something else they had been taking without their knowledge, such as benzodiazepines. Health care providers and addiction recovery coaches can’t help them as effectively if they don’t realize what the addiction stems from.”At the same time that Lieberman’s lab is sharing its data with the community, the researchers are also using that data to advance the science of drug testing and to improve testing strips. As part of a study recently published in the Harm Reduction Journal, Lieberman and her graduate student Kathleen Hayes tested more than 200 fentanyl analogs, or variants, using existing test strips. They discovered that these widely used strips have “blind spots,” meaning they can detect some but not all fentanyl analogs. The lab now leads an ongoing effort to monitor the effectiveness of different brands of test strips. As the first facility on Notre Dame’s campus to work with illegal drugs, Lieberman’s lab had to undergo a construction project that added a special high-security inner room equipped with a camera that delivers a video feed of the activities in the room to law enforcement. Her lab gained approval from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Indiana Board of Pharmacy and developed relationships with the St. Joseph County sheriff and prosecutor and with Chief Analyst John Rorabeck at the Berrien County Forensic Laboratory at Andrews University.Although the project has involved added security—including building a literal wall—the most gratifying part for Lieberman has been the way the project breaks walls down. When asked about the ways her fieldwork is serving the local community’s needs, Lieberman often paused to express discomfort with the idea, preferring to point out that “the field is here, and we are the community.” She said a far-reaching problem like the opioid epidemic makes that clear.“We tend to think of drug addiction and overdose affecting a certain kind of person—a person who is different from us,” she said. “But when I started working on this project, I was really surprised by how many of my friends, neighbors, and colleagues talked to me about how they had been impacted by the opioid crisis—some had lost a family member to an overdose; some had struggled with addiction themselves. We know that for every person who overdoses, there are seven to 10 family members and friends who are strongly impacted. When we touch this problem, we touch those lives as well.”
