High‑purity chemicals such as nitric acid (HNO3) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4), as well as high‑purity metals, require analytical workflows capable of achieving sub‑ppt detection limits (DLs) while maintaining excellent robustness and reproducibility. To meet these needs, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP‑MS (ICP‑QQQ)</a> equipped with a Dual‑Cell System (DCS)1 and the optional m‑lens ion optics provides a highly stable platform, enabling low backgrounds and reliable performance under hot plasma conditions.&nbsp;The m‑lens is engineered to suppress background signals for elements including easily ionized elements such as Na and K that typically show elevated background equivalent concentrations (BECs) under hot plasma conditions. The 9500 ICP-QQQ with m‑lens is suitable for the analysis of metal digests and other sample types that demand robust performance and low backgrounds.2However, its benefits also extend to low‑matrix, high‑purity reagents, supporting sub‑ppt impurity measurements of simpler matrices.3&nbsp;Agilent’s ICP‑QQQ portfolio allows users to select instruments based on desired DLs and operational objectives. For laboratories seeking the lowest possible DLs, the Agilent 8900 Semiconductor configuration ICP-QQQ equipped with an s‑lens provides exceptional sensitivity, making it suitable for laboratories operating at the extreme limits of ultratrace quantification. The 9500 ICP-QQQ with m‑lens provides robust, high sensitivity measurements, ideal for routine trace level applications. This model is appropriate for labs that may not require the lowest DLs for every element but still demand high‑quality, reproducible data.&nbsp;In this study, we evaluated the performance of the 9500 ICP‑QQQ using a method designed specifically for low‑matrix, high‑purity reagents. Using preset methods implemented in the instrument software for ultrapure water (UPW) and for H2SO4 —the UPW method is also applicable to diluted HNO3 and H2O2 — we analyzed 1% HNO3 and high purity H2SO4 separately. Sub-ppt DLs and low backgrounds were achieved for target analytes in both matrices. These results confirm that the 9500 ICP‑QQQ with m-lens can be used for ultratrace impurity analysis of semiconductor‑grade reagents, as well as demanding metal‑matrix applications.&nbsp;<h4>Experimental</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</a> fitted with the optional m-lens and the Agilent I-AS autosampler were fully controlled using Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software version 1.1. Designed for ultratrace metal analysis, the sample introduction system comprised a MicroFlow PFA nebulizer with I-AS probe (operated in self-aspiration mode), a temperature-controlled quartz spray chamber, and a quartz torch with a 2.5 mm inner diameter (id) injector. A platinum-tipped sampler cone with copper base and a platinum-tipped skimmer cone with nickel base for m-lens were used.&nbsp;The 9500 ICP‑QQQ was operated using five tune modes: no gas, Advanced Helium Mode (AHM), O2 , NH3 , and H2 . For the H2 SO4 samples, additional specialized tunes were prepared for the determination of platinum (Pt) and zinc (Zn) to ensure optimal performance (Table 1). The use of reaction and collision gases enabled effective removal of spectral interferences originating from argon plasma species as well as matrix‑related polyatomic ions. The makeup gas flow rate and the Omega lens voltage parameters were automatically optimized by the preset methods for m-lens, resulting in a stable CeO/Ce ratio that was maintained between approximately 1 and 3%.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This study evaluated the Agilent 9500 ICP‑QQQ with m‑lens for ultratrace analysis of high‑purity reagents using preset methods for 1% HNO3 and 9.8% H2 SO4 . Sub‑ or singlefigure ppt detection limits and low background equivalent concentrations were achieved for all elements, demonstrating that ultratrace measurements can be easily performed under hot‑plasma conditions. The Dual‑Cell System enabled effective removal of matrix‑related interferences, with Advanced Helium Mode providing an effective approach for the measurement of challenging elements such as Zn in H2 SO4 . The results show that the 9500 ICP‑QQQ with intuitive preset methods can deliver sensitive, low-background data, offering an accessible entry point for laboratories that are new to ultratrace analysis.<h3>2. Metrohm: Rapid quality control of fruits and vegetables using NIR spectroscopy</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/an_nir_141_download_e1bab41aee.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful, nondestructive analytical technique for quality control in the fruit and vegetable processing industry. This Application Note presents the use of NIR spectroscopy for the rapid monitoring of firmness in apples and °Brix in peaches and crushed tomatoes. These are critical parameters to verify the quality and freshness of various fruits and vegetables. Traditionally measured using destructive methods like penetrometry and refractometry, these fresh produce quality control attributes are critical indicators of ripeness, sweetness, and overall consumer acceptability.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT</h4>All samples were tested with a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=NIR">Metrohm near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer.</a> The measurements were done in reflection mode using either a large sample cup or direct measurement (i.e., no holder). Metrohm software was used for all data acquisition and quantification model development.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note shows that NIR spectroscopy can easily measure firmness in apples, as well as °Brix in peaches and crushed tomatoes. When compared to traditional lab methods (Table 1), NIRS provides a faster, simpler, and nondestructive alternative with excellent accuracy and consistency. All measurements proved to be consistent and fast, helping producers to monitor their fresh fruits and vegetables and deliver high-quality products to consumers.<h3>3. Shimadzu: Evaluation of Surface Carbon on Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Active Materials Using a TOC Analyzer and Infrared/Raman Microscope</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/an_01_01122_en_b3b0f25211.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul><h5>User benefits</h5><ul><li>The TOC solid sample measurement system enables quantitative evaluation of carbon coatings on cathode active material surfaces.</li><li>The AIRsight infrared/Raman microscope enables evaluation of the carbon layer structure.</li><li>Carbon content and structure can be evaluated using a small amount of sample.</li></ul>The cathode active materials used in lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) for electric vehicles (EVs) are broadly classified into two categories depending on their application: nickel-based materials (NCM/NCA/NCMA) and phosphate-based materials (LFP: LiFePO4, LMFP: LiFexMn1-xPO4). Nickel-based materials are characterized by high energy density as well as excellent low-temperature and high-power performance, making them indispensable for longrange driving and high-performance vehicle segments. In contrast, phosphate-based materials offer superior safety, long cycle life, and cost advantages, and their use is expanding primarily in standard-range and mass-market segments.Because LFP and LMFP compounds are intrinsically low in electronic conductivity, a carbon coating on the surface of the active material is essential to compensate for that limitation and improve performance. Accordingly, quantitative control of carbon content is of great importance. For that type of carbon analysis, the TOC solid sample measurement system (Fig. 1), which combines a TOC-L total organic carbon analyzer with an SSM-5000A solid sample combustion unit, is effective.&nbsp;Furthermore, the conductivity of the surface carbon layer is closely related to the degree of graphitization and defect structure of the carbon, making structural evaluation of the carbon layer equally important. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=AIRsight">AIRsight infrared/Raman microscope</a> (Fig. 2) enablessuch structural evaluation.&nbsp;This Application News presents examples of evaluating carbon on the surface of LMFP cathode active materials, with carbon quantitation using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=TOC-L">TOC-L </a>+ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=SSM-5000A">SSM-5000A system</a> and carbon layer structure evaluation using the AIRsight infrared/Raman microscope.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Quantitative analysis of the carbon coating on the LMFP surface was performed using the TOC solid sample measurement system (TOC-L + SSM-5000A), and structural evaluation of the carbon layer was conducted using the AIRsight microscope. In addition, Raman analysis of the LMFP residue after TC analysis was carried out to verify the validity of the carbon quantitation results. The TOC solid sample measurement system (TOC-L + SSM-5000A) is capable of not only TC analysis in solid samples, but also of IC and TOC analysis. Furthermore, by simply changing the software settings, carbon analysis of liquid samples (TOC, TC, and IC) can also be performed using the TOC-L main unit. This system can also be applied to carbon analysis of water-extractable TOC in black mass, lithium extraction solutions, and lithium carbonate, all of which are relevant materialsin lithium-ion battery recycling. The AIRsight is capable of both Raman and infrared measurements. Therefore, in addition to the Raman measurements introduced here, it can be used, with a single microscope system, to evaluate degradation caused by charge and discharge cycles in various battery components, such as negative electrode materials and separators.<h3>4. ISC 2026 officially opened in Prague on Sunday, September 6, bringing the international separation science community together at the Prague Congress Centre. The first day began with six Short Courses covering topics from analytical procedure lifecycle and mass spectral interpretation to HILIC, oligonucleotides, LC/MS data analysis, and supercritical fluids. In the afternoon, conference chairs Michal Holčapek and Lucie Nováková welcomed participants during the Opening Ceremony, followed by the J.F.K. Huber Medal Award Ceremony. The scientific program then moved into its first plenary session, spanning spintronics, single-cell proteomics and robust LC-MS, and rapid evaporative ionisation mass spectrometry. For the first time in the history of microprocessor chips, semiconductor bits are being replaced by a fundamentally distinct technology. The technology is based on magnets and is called spintronics. All major developers and manufacturers of the advanced chip technologies are now implementing these new spintronic bits. Not across the entire microprocessor chip, but in some of its vital memory parts. The transition to the spintronic bits is happening because further miniaturization of semiconductor bits has become prohibitively expensive or even reached fundamental physical limits. This concept is based on the idea of pathological heterogeneity and recognizes the impact of differences in the heath state of individuals. The deployment of single cell technologies has demonstrated heterogeneity within a single cell type which impacts the degree of cellular heterogeneity within an organ. Unlike bulk proteomic approaches, which average signals across heterogeneous populations, single-cell proteomics captures the molecular diversity of cell. Today single-cell proteomics can provide high-resolution characterization of protein quantities and variability within the structural composition and signaling dynamics within individual cells which requires robust, precise and sensitive liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS) workflows with sufficient throughput to quantitatively analyze 1000s of single cells.We have developed stable and precise single cell LC-MS workflow based on high-flow, dual trap with a single analytical column system that can achieve 96 samples per day. Furthermore, we have coupled this with a novel parallel sample preparation method on demand within the autosampler reducing sample lose and matching throughput with the LC-MS. Here, we have investigated the proteomic heterogeneity of cardiac muscle cells, cardiomyocytes, the specialized cells that contain the contractile proteins and which are responsible for the heart contraction and relaxation. By applying single-cell proteomics to cardiomyocytes isolated from human and mouse hearts, as well as human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes, we uncovered previously unrecognized cellular subpopulations distinguished by differences in contractile and metabolic protein expression. As well unexpectedly, we unambiguously identified proteins traditionally considered absent in adult cardiomyocyte, such as slow skeletal troponin T, previously thought to be restricted to fetal or skeletal muscle or those proposed to be limited to non-cardiac cell types (e.g., neuronal proteins) or species (e.g., myosin heavy chain 7b). This suggests an unexpected fluidity in cardiac protein expression. Furthermore, single cell proteomics has provided critical insight into protein-level remodeling in heart failure, where the same single amino acid mutation in a contractile protein can give rise to diverse clinical phenotypes. At the single cell level, the mutant protein dosage in each cell drives a continuum of subproteomic pathological alterations. Only with precise protein quantification at the single cell level, is this understanding possible – all of which hinges on the LC-MS performance.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/ISC_ISC_2026_Day_1_Jennifer_Van_Eyk_f8641196ff.jpg" alt="ISC: ISC 2026 - Day 1: Single cell proteomics requires robust LC-MS: Unexpected findings bring new biological understanding (Jennifer Van Eyk, USA)" srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/thumbnail_ISC_ISC_2026_Day_1_Jennifer_Van_Eyk_f8641196ff.jpg 235w," sizes="100vw" width="1600" height="1066"><h5>18:00 - 18:30 Rapid evaporative ionisation mass spectrometry: From MSI to LC-MS</h5><ul><li>Zoltan Takats, United Kingdom&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul>Rapid Evaporative Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) was originally developed for mass spectrometry-guided surgery applications, enabling the direct, real-time analysis of surgical aerosols for in-situ histological identification of tissues in cancer surgery. Coupling the technique with various surgical and non-surgical lasers led to the recognition, that the technique has comparable sensitivity to other, widely used desorption ionisation methods including DESI and MALDI. Laser Ablation REIMS using 3 μm wavelength picosecond lasers was demonstrated to provide sub-cellular resolution metabolic and lipidomic images at 2-5 μm spatial resolution, with clear visualisation of cellular nuclei. The method was subsequently used for regenerative neuroscience and cancer biology applications. The unexpectedly high sensitivity of the method (fg amounts of lipids and metabolites / pixel) encouraged us to attempt using REIMS as an LC-MS ion source. The current commercially available REIMS instrumentation utilises the so-called matrix-assited REIMS technology, involving the co-introduction of a polar solvent (water, acetonitrile or aliphatic alcohols) together with the sample aerosol. The fused droplets containing solvent and soluble components of the aerosol are introduced into the vacuum where they impact a heated (≈900 ºC) surface resulting in their 'rapid evaporation' yielding the detected ion population. In this context, the ionisation matrix was replaced by LC effluent, leading to a fundamentally new way of ionisation. The new technique termed LC-REIMS was characterised using reversed phase LC applications including lipid and metabolite profiling. The new ionisation method was found to exhibit high similarity to sonic spray and related techniques, in spite of the high temperature involved. Analytical sensitivity for complex lipids and amino acids were found to be comparable to those in ESI or APCI, albeit the relative response factors followed markedly different trends. Using an Agilent Technologies 8890 with custom Wasson-ECE hardware, this instrument rapidly determines oxygenate components in motor fuels.

The determination of oxygenates in motor fuels is an important mandate of the reformulated fuels program. To meet this goal, the United States Environmental Protection Agency approved the use of Oxygenate Flame Ionization Detector (O-FID) analysis in preference to other analyses currently used by the fuels industry.
<h5>Oxygen Selectivity</h5>
Using an Agilent Technologies 8890 GC with custom Wasson-ECE hardware, this instrument rapidly determines oxygenate components in motor fuels. A single injection is introduced onto a capillary column which separates oxygenate components in boiling point order. A cracking reactor converts hydrocarbons into elemental carbon, and oxygenated compounds into carbon monoxide. A methanizer then further converts the carbon monoxide into methane before eluting to the FID detector.
Because hydrocarbons never make it to the detector, this method completely eliminates problems with hydrocarbon interferences.

Wasson-ECE Liquid Auto-Sampler (LS100B) offers laboratory automation for pressurized liquid samples such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas liquids (NGL).

Wasson-ECE Liquid Auto-Sampler (LS100B) offers laboratory automation for pressurized liquid samples such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas liquids (NGL).
The LS100B uses inert gases to maintain pressure so that the sample remains in the liquid state at ambient temperature as it passes to the GC for analysis.
The LS100B accommodates up to nine sample cylinders with 1/4 inch tube, VCO, or quick connect fittings. These fittings hold the sample cylinders vertically, ensuring that samples are drawn from the bottom of the cylinder.

Wasson Dynamic Blender for GC (DB302)

The Dynamic Blender is a portable gas blending device that dilutes a sample or a certified standard with a matrix gas of choice.

Gas chromatography (GC) analyses often include trace level detection of components requiring samples or standards at low concentrations. Some analytes are expensive or difficult to purchase at low levels due to reactivity, adsorption, or high molecular weight. Analyses may also cover a wide concentration range, requiring multi-point calibration.
The Wasson-ECE Dynamic Blender (DB302) provides a simple solution to these calibration needs. The Dynamic Blender is a portable gas blending device that dilutes a sample or a certified standard with a matrix gas of choice. One certified standard with concentrations at the upper limit of the desired calibration curve can be diluted to a lower level (&gt;2 orders of magnitude lower) to create a full calibration curve.
An inert flow path and heated bridge eliminate adsorption and condensation problems when blending gas standards that include sulfur, nitrogen, and other reactive compounds.
An on-board flow controller allows the diluent gas flow to be controlled digitally and samples are fed directly to a gas chromatograph. The Dynamic Blender eliminates the need to purchase and store multiple gas cylinders and provides an easy, cost-effective solution for gas phase calibration needs.

The Variable Pressure Sampler (VPS) works in two ways to ensure the precision and accuracy of gas results.

The Variable Pressure Sampler (VPS) works in two ways to ensure the precision and accuracy of gas results. The first method is pressure correction, used to create uniform pressure among all injected samples and the calibration blend. The second method is multi-point calibration, which can deliver a calibration blend to the GC at various pressures.
The VPS pressure correction system performs a multi-step process that ensures samples and calibration blends are at uniform pressures when they are injected.
First, when the calibration blend is run through the GC, the VPS measures and stores the pressure of the calibration blend at the time of injection. Then, as each sample is injected at the stored pressure, the VPS adjusts the pressure of the sample to match the pressure of the calibration blend.
The inject pressure of the sample is reported to Agilent Technologies OpenLAB ChemStation software so calculations and quality control operations can be performed.
Using the VPS, calibration samples can be run at various pressures from a single standard. This decreases overall lab costs while ensuring greater accuracy in results. The multi-point calibration function allows testing for signal linearity at different pressures. With this feature, the user can easily pinpoint the range of pressures which generates the most accurate and meaningful results from the calibration standard.

For analysis, we use full laboratory facilities for sample preparation and high-resolution mass spectrometry (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labexperts.com.pl/o-nas/">equipment</a>).We use different work algorithms depending on the material we are dealing with and the analytical task to be solved.
