Agilent Technologies: Increasing Sample Throughput Using the Agilent <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Cary+6000i+UV-Vis-NIR">Cary 6000i UV-Vis-NIR</a></h3><ul><li>Brochure</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/a_uvvis07_1_0bfde183e8.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>The Agilent Cary 6000i UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer offers the sensitivity of a narrow band InGaAs detector in the NIR range (800–1800 nm) combined with a short wavelength NIR diffraction grating. A combination that that is superior to any commercially available instrument measuring over a similar range. Performance benefits of the Cary 6000i include: - A larger photodynamic linear range (capable of measuring absorbances up to 8 in the NIR) - Superior signal-to-noise (S/N) achieved with significantly less averaging, resulting in greater sample throughput - Superior spectral resolution<h4>Results and discussion&nbsp;</h4>To demonstrate the high signal-to-noise and excellent spectral resolution of the Cary 6000i, Figure 1 shows water vapor spectra collected on the Cary 6000i and an Agilent Cary 5000 UV-Vis-NIR (using a PbS detector in the NIR). The Cary 5000 is considered the “best-in-class” commercially available PbS NIR instrument that is currently available.A Signal Averaging Time (SAT) of 10 s was used on the Cary 5000 compared to 0.1 s on the Cary 6000i. Also, a spectral bandwidth (SBW) of 0.05 nm was used on the Cary 5000 compared to 0.02 nm on the Cary 6000i. The S/N achieved is significantly better on the 6000i, which uses 100 times less averaging with 2.5 times reduced SBW.&nbsp;To put this in perspective, a typical spectrum requiring 5 s averaging/data point, collected every 1 nm over the NIR range of 800–1800 nm (1000 data points) can take approximately 160 minutes to collect (including a baseline collection) on the Cary 5000. The Cary 6000i would require 1.5 minutes (based on a 0.05 s SAT). Also, as the sensitivity of the Cary 5000 is better than that of other commercially available PbS-based instruments, the time required to collect data over this wavelength range on other spectrophotometers can be significantly greater.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The benefits of increased sensitivity and signal-to-noise mode can lead to substantial time savings and reduced measurement costs per sample, particularly when running multiple samples on a daily or weekly basis using the Agilent Cary 6000i UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer.<h3>2. Shimadzu / AOAC: Screening Analysis of Trace Heavy Metals in Powdered Milk&nbsp;</h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/aoac_2025_m027_462504e474.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>One method for detecting heavy metals in food products is the color reaction (staining) method. However, this approach cannot identify specific metals (elements) and can be affected by sample components. Therefore, techniques like AA (atomic absorption spectrophotometry), ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry), or ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) are used for elemental analysis. Nonetheless, preparing samples for these tests often involves labor-intensive steps such as reagent extraction and acidic digestion. In the case of staining, subjective judgment can vary, posing challenges in production and quality control.&nbsp;To address this, we propose using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF), which offers a simple, seamless process from sample preparation to measurement and analysis. Generally, quantification by EDXRF below 1 ppm is challenging, as shown in Table 1, because these levels are near or below the quantitation limit. However, powdered milk provides a practical example: the standard values for the powder before dissolving in hot water are about 7.7 times higher than those listed in Table 1.&nbsp;This indicates that EDXRF can reliably screen whether the heavy metal concentration is below the standard value since it can analyze powders directly. Additionally, the sensitivity of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ALTRACE">ALTRACE</a> instrument for heavy metals has been significantly improved compared to conventional EDXRF (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=EDX-7000">EDX-7000</a>) by installing a highoutput X-ray tube, allowing analysis with the same sensitivity as older models but in only one-tenth of the measurement time.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Excellent results were obtained for both the calibration curves and the analysis results of powdered milk. EDXRF is useful for production process and quality control, as it is possible to measure samples directly in powder form or with only simple sample preparation, and thanks to its simple instrument handling and excellent repeatability, there are virtually no individual differences in results and judgments. The sensitivity of ALTRACE for heavy metal elements was substantially improved by installing a high power Xray tube, enabling highly accurate management in a shorter time, thereby contributing to improved throughput.<h3>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Comprehensive Analysis of Nanoparticles using Single and Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS and a Dedicated Data Evaluation Tool</h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/po_44375_icp_ms_nanoparticles_wcps2018_po44375_en_9e42719344.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>The direct sizing and counting of nanoparticles using single particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS) is an alternative to established techniques for particle characterization. However, for some materials such as silica or TiO2 , spectral interferences are still a limiting factor. In addition, the differences in data evaluation may slow the implementation of spICP-MS as a tool in routine analysis. In order to enable comprehensive analysis of nanoparticles this presentation will show a completely integrated workflow solution based on the Qtegra Intelligent Scientific Data Solution software. The software plug-in allows also unexperienced users to set up methods through automatic determination of key input parameters and statistical evaluation of the data in order to recognize artefacts.<h4>MATERIALS AND METHODS</h4><h5>Mass Spectrometry&nbsp;</h5>A Thermo Scientific iCAP RQ ICP-MS or <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1206">iCAP TQ ICP-MS</a> was used for all analyses.<h5>Data Analysis</h5>Acquisition and Evaluation of the data was accomplished using the npQuant plug-in for the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1489">Qtegra ISDS Software</a>. Due to the instrument agnostic design of the software, the plug-in is compatible with all ICP-MS instruments operated through Qtegra ISDS, including both instruments of the iCAP Qnova SeriesTM, the iCAP RQ and iCAP TQ ICP-MS. Also different peripherals, such as autosamplers from all major manufacturers, are supported in this application. The use of a dedicated plug-in for acquisition and evaluation of the data allows to hassle free mix different applications, for example, trace elemental quantification as the major application in routine analysis focused laboratories, and single particle ICP-MS as a new application of interest.<h4>CONCLUSIONS&nbsp;</h4><ul><li>The npQuant plug-in for Qtegra ISDS allows to analyze all types of nanomaterials in a simple and intuitive workflow. All required input parameters can be determined automatically and users are guided to find optimum acquisition conditions for their analysis.&nbsp;</li><li>The use of triple quadrupole ICP-MS greatly helps to overcome challenging interferences on some analytes, including isobaric interferences, which are difficult to overcome using single quadrupole ICP-MS instruments.</li></ul>

Drug precursors include chemicals that are one reaction away from being the drug (e.g. 4-ANPP to fentanyl), chemicals that are used in a wide range of legal applications from fragrances (e.g. benzaldehyde) to solvents (e.g. toluene), and chemicals that are multiple reaction steps away from the drug itself, sometimes called a "pre-precursor". The resulting "pre-precursor" may be sufficiently different from the main precursor that it circumnavigates legislation, mobilizing drug synthesis to any country.&nbsp;The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Agilent+Resolve+tactical+handheld+Raman">Agilent Resolve tactical handheld Raman analyzer</a> uses spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS) technology to identify hazardous materials, explosives, and narcotics concealed behind single and multiple barriers. These barriers can include colored and opaque plastics, glass, paper, card, wrapping, and fabrics. The combination of SORS, high data quality, reduced fluorescence interference, and a library continuously updated with new psychoactive substances makes the Resolve a powerful tool in the detection and identification of controlled substances. As of library version 43, over 80 different precursors can be identified using Resolve.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The Agilent Resolve tactical handheld Raman analyzer can be used for the fast, direct identification of drug precursors in the original packaging. Direct analysis using the Resolve minimizes the risk of accidental exposure to the compounds by law enforcers.<h3>2. Plastics have a wide array of applications such as packaging, medical supplies, automotive parts, insulation, and many more. Plastics consist of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which are composed of polymers. Compounds containing Nitrogen are commonly used in the manufacturing of plastic materials such as initializers, plasticizers, stabilizers, and various polymerization modifiers. These compounds play an important role in the physical and mechanical properties of the plastic material. The determination of Nitrogen is crucial in the material characterization and quality control procedures for the manufacturing and molding process of plastic materials.&nbsp;The classical method utilized for Nitrogen determination in organic materials is the Kjeldahl method which involves sample digestion, distillation, and ammonia determination typically by titration. This method involves time-consuming sample preparation and the use of hazardous materials. The LECO FP928 is a Nitrogen determinator that utilizes an automated Dumas combustion method and provides accurate and precise results in approximately five minutes. This eliminates involved sample preparation and the use of hazardous materials resulting in a cost-effective method for the quality control of plastic production.&nbsp;<h4>Instrument Model and Configuration&nbsp;</h4>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=24&amp;search=FP928">LECO FP928</a> is a macro combustion Nitrogen determinator that utilizes a pure Oxygen environment in a high-temperature horizontal ceramic combustion furnace, using ceramic or Nickel combustion boats designed to handle macro sample masses (~1.0 g). A thermoelectric cooler removes moisture from the combustion gases before they are collected in a ballast. The gases equilibrate and mix in the ballast before a representative aliquot (3 cm3 or 10 cm3 volume) of the gas is extracted and introduced into a flowing stream of inert carrier gas (Helium or Argon) for analysis. The aliquot of gas is carried through a heated reduction tube, filled with Copper, to convert Nitrogen Oxide combustion gas species (NOx) to Nitrogen (N2). The aliquot gas is then carried to a thermal conductivity cell (TC) for the detection of Nitrogen (N2)<h4>TYPICAL RESULTS&nbsp;</h4>Data was generated utilizing a linear, force through origin calibration using 502-602 Ammonium Solution (0.1% N). The calibration was verified using 502-601 Ammonium Solution (0.01% N). All reference materials and samples were weighed and analyzed at ~1.0 g. Approximately 2 ml of deionized water was added to the samples prior to analysis to reduce sooting.<h3>3. Shimadzu: Quantitative Analysis of Antacid (Aluminum) in Drug by EDX (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=EDX-7200">EDX-7200</a>)</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00695_en_018864d4e9.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul><h4>User Benefits</h4><ul><li>The titration method and atomic absorption spectrophotometry require complex sample preparation, but with EDX, analysis is possible with simple sample preparation.</li><li>The analysis time is only a few minutes, contributing to work efficiency.</li><li>Repeatability is good, and highly accurate results can be obtained.</li></ul>Aluminum (Al) compounds such as aluminum hydroxide gel and synthetic hydrotalcite are widely used as antacids because they have the effect of neutralizing excess stomach acid and reducing irritation of the stomach wall. At pharmaceutical manufacturing sites, the titration method or atomic absorption spectrophotometry is generally adopted for control of antacids in drug products, but these analytical methods have the problems shown in the following Table 1.&nbsp;Because the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDX) enables analysis with only simple sample preparation, and the analysis time is also short, at a few minutes per sample, higher analysis efficiency can be expected. For this reason, EDX has attracted attention as an alternative analytical method to the titration method and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. This article introduces an example of an analysis of an antacid (Al) used in commercially-available drugs.<h4>Comparison of Unknown Sample Analysis by EDX with Titration Method&nbsp;</h4>Three unknown samples were prepared (n = 3 for each sample material), and a quantitative analysis was conducted. Table 4 shows the results. The relative error of the average values obtained by the EDX method to the quantitative values obtained by the titration method showed a satisfactory correlation of 3.5 % or less.&nbsp;A significance test of the difference in the quantitative values by the two methods was carried out assuming a significance level of 5 %. Because the null hypothesis “no difference” is not rejected, it cannot be concluded that there is a difference between the two methods.EDX is a potential alternative to the titration method, and the evaluation of that possibility is based on a total judgment, including the number of unknown sample materials, the control range of the amount of addition, the variance between the two methods(homogeneity of variance test) and other factors<h4>Conclusion</h4><ol><li>EDX has the following advantages:&nbsp;</li><li>Analysis is possible with simple sample preparation.&nbsp;</li><li>Short analysis with a few minutes.&nbsp;</li><li>High repeatability.&nbsp;</li><li>Easy analysis operation.&nbsp;</li></ol>EDX is expected to be used as an alternative to the titration method in research and development and quality control work.<h3>4. Waters Corporation: Subvisible Particles: Why Don’t I Just Filter My Biologic Samples?</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720009113_en_ccc2bf4650.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Filtration of a therapeutic is often cited as a key method to remove particles generated during the manufacturing process. From ultrafiltration and diafiltration (UF/DF) to tangential flow filtration (TFF), several methods are employed throughout the bioprocess to remove aggregates and other product impurities.1 While filtration removes preformed particles, including subvisible particles (SVPs), it does not account for the inherent instability of biologic samples, and thus subvisible aggregates can be generated over time even after filtration2 . In addition, the expansion in the complexity of biologic therapies leads to additional challenges during the manufacturing process from purification to filtration. In some cases, filtration cannot be applied as is the case with cell-based therapies. Therefore, all biologics need to be formulated to be stable over the long term, regardless of filtration.&nbsp;In this application note, we use <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2190">Aura® System</a> and backgrounded membrane imaging (BMI) to explore the effect of filtration on three different biologic formulations, two therapeutic proteins and a lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation. We analyze for the presence of SVPs in these three sample types immediately after filtration and sequentially over a two-week period. Here, we learned that filtration greatly reduces the original SVP content, but SVP formation continues to increase as a function of time with a rate that is sample dependent.<h4>Results and Discussion&nbsp;</h4><h5>Impact of Filtration on SVP Counts&nbsp;</h5>In this small study across the three different samples tested (Protein 1, Protein 2 and LNPs), a significant amount (&gt;90%) of subvisible particles (&gt;0.2 µm) were removed by a single round of filtration using a 0.2 µm syringe filter. Interestingly, filtration did not remove all particles larger than the size threshold of the filter, and thus highlights the limited efficiency on SVP clearance (Figure 1a). An explanation for this includes that a single round of filtration itself is imperfect and often biologics are filtered more than once and through various methods.<h4>Conclusion</h4>Sample filtration is used as an integral part of the bioprocess to remove extraneous particles from the final drug product; however, it does not fix the inherent stability of biomolecules. Stability itself is governed by thermodynamics: time, temperature and the chemical nature of the sample and its formulation. Subvisible particles are the most important stability parameter: they highlight the presence of large physiologically relevant aggregates with the capacity to affect both safety and efficacy of any final drug product. What we have shown is that cleaning the final product using filtration doesn’t result in a stable particle-free sample risking drug efficacy and patient safety. Agilent Technologies: Analysis of Soil and Sediments by ICP-MS with Advanced Sample Introduction Tools</h3>Simplified sample preparation enabled by the Agilent Mira Mist Nebulizer and an In-Line Particle Filter<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_enviro_soil_sample_prep_9500_icp_qqq_5994_9126en_agilent_8299f007e9.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>ICP-MS is widely employed for monitoring inorganic elements in soil and sediments, with established methods such as US EPA 6020B providing a validated framework for the accurate, multi‑element analysis of environmental samples.1 In a separate study, we demonstrated the outstanding performance capabilities of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> (ICP-QQQ) in compliance with EPA 6020B requirements.2 The instrument, which includes the Ultra High Matrix Introduction (UHMI) system for enhanced plasma stability and robustness, employed Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode to achieve lower limits of detection (LODs) compared to conventional cell gas approaches.3,4The two collision/reaction cell (CRC) modes of operation were enabled by the Agilent Dual-Cell System (DCS) —a unique CRC that provides the following performance advantages when operated in AHM and Air cell mode: – AHM – This innovative He-based gas collision-cell mode significantly enhances sensitivity for low-mass analytes while providing robust interference removal across the entire mass range. – This single gas mode eliminates the need for multiple modes, replacing no gas, conventional He, and high energy (HE) He mode. – Air cell mode – Using oxygen (O2 ) from air and an integrated air filter for the 9500 ICP-QQQ, Air cell mode leverages reactions between O2 and analytes to improve detection limits (DLs) for oxygen-reactive species. – Air cell mode effectively eliminates interferences, including M++ that are challenging to resolve using He-based gas methods.5 – With an unlimited supply of O2 in air, Air cell mode eliminates the need for O2 gas cylinders, reducing operating costs and simplifying workflows.Of all the ICP-MS nebulizers, the Agilent Mira Mist nebulizer offers the best resistance to concentrated acids and organic solvents. Its parallel path design ensures good tolerance to high levels of particulates and total dissolved solids (TDS), providing excellent resistance to clogging. In this study, the 9500 ICP-QQQ equipped with an in-line particle filter and Mira Mist nebulizer was used to determine trace and major elements in five environmental certified reference materials (CRMs) and a real sediment sample. The performance of the method was evaluated according to criteria set out in EPA Method 6020B.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>All measurements were performed using an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</a> that includes the following standard components: nickel (Ni) interface cones and newly designed DCS cell. The design features and functionality of the 9500 and DCS are explained elsewhere.3,4 The 9500 was also equipped with the optional Agilent Advanced Valve System (AVS&nbsp;MS) discrete sampling system for improved productivity. The AVS&nbsp;MS system’s high-speed piston pump works seamlessly with the Agilent SPS 4 and SPS&nbsp;6 autosamplers for sample delivery, ensuring the high sample throughput necessary to meet the operational needs of most environmental testing laboratories.To optimize signal stability with the Mira Mist nebulizer, the nebulizer pump speed was adjusted and a makeup gas was introduced (Table 1). In the 9500 ICP-QQQ, both the makeup gas and dilution gas can be added, enabling finer control of the plasma gas flow rates to optimize signal %RSD within the target sensitivity zone. The lens parameters were set automatically using the Autotune function in the software. The in-line filter’s internal volume is sufficiently small that its presence does not influence AVS MS sample introduction timing or method parameters. As a result, the same settings were used with and without the filter installed (Table 2).<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In this study, sediment samples were analyzed in accordance with EPA Method 6020B using the Agilent 9500 ICP‑QQQ with UHMI and the optional AVS MS. The system was equipped with advanced sample introduction components, including the Mira Mist nebulizer and an in‑line particle filter.&nbsp;The combination of the Mira Mist nebulizer and in-line filter enabled the analysis of sediment digests without a dedicated filtration step, reducing sample preparation time and consumable costs. Although some of these elements are highly toxic, there are cases in which it is difficult to distinguish them at an early stage because they lack specific symptoms of poisoning. Therefore, analytical methods for rapid screening of these elements are required in forensic research.&nbsp;Inorganic elements are generally analyzed by ICP-AES or ICP-MS. Although these techniques allow trace-level quantitation, they require chemical pretreatment such as dilution and deproteinization, and the samples are limited to liquid specimens. In contrast, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF - <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=EDX-7200">EDX-7200</a>) offers sufficient sensitivity in the concentration range associated with poisoning and enables simple, non-destructive analysis in a short time.&nbsp;This application describesthe results of quantitative analysis of 15 elements in urine by the calibration curve method, and qualquantitative analysis by the FP (Fundamental Parameter) method based on sensitivity coefficients installed in the instrument. The errors in the quantitative values obtained by the FP-based qualquantitative analysis method were approximately ±20 %, indicating that sufficient quantitative accuracy was achieved. Screening can be performed within 10 minutes persample.<h4>Conclusion</h4>The FP method demonstrated high accuracy for quantitation without calibration curves. Furthermore, urine samples do not require complicated pretreatment such as protein removal, and the analysis time is as short as approximately 10 minutes per sample. This method is well suited for poisoning screening in forensic research.<h3>3. It is important to accurately analyze these materials to confirm compliance of their chemical specifications that imply physical properties, like conductivity, compressive strength, hardness, resistance to traction and to abrasion. High product quality and efficient production can be ensured with accurate analysis results. Copper alloys Pure copper is mixed with other elements to produce a wide range of alloys: Brasses (Cu-Zn), bronzes (Cu-Sn), gun metal (Cu-Sn-Zn) used for casting due to its excellent fluidity, for valves, taps and water fittings. Manganese bronzes (Cu-Zn-Mn) are not true bronzes as Sn is not the essential constituent. Used for rudders, propellers, and ship fittings. Cupro-nickel (Cu-Ni) used for coins, tubes, wires, electrical resistances, and thermocouples. Nickel silver (Cu-Ni-Zn) used for marine applications, car radiators and fittings.&nbsp;<h4>Brass&nbsp;</h4>One of the most important non-ferrous engineering alloys. It covers a large range of physical properties with multiple applications. Copper can hold about 39% of zinc in solid solution. Alloys containing less than 39% Zn are known as α-brasses. This brass (70/30) is very widely employed for cartridge, cases, condenser tubes, etc. From 39% to 46% of Zn, a β-solid solution gives αβ-brass. This alloy (60/40) is found in extensive engineering applications with enhanced corrosion resistance used in marine applications. Alloys containing more than 49% Zn are very hard and only used for brazing brasses.<h4>Instrument parameters and conditions&nbsp;</h4>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1978">ARL X900 XRF Spectrometer</a> can accommodate up to 24 fixed monochromator channels alongside the goniometer or up to 32 fixed monochromator channels when no goniometer is fitted. New high counting fixed channel monochromators using an SCX detector are available to further improve the precision of analysis, especially for elements like Cu, Zn and Ni.Our unique proprietary Moiré fringe goniometer ensures speed, flexibility and reliability of analysis thanks to the clever frictionfree positioning system. For more results using goniometer channels please refer to AN41426.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Analysis of all sorts of copper alloys can be performed with ease using the ARL X900 Simultaneous-Sequential XRF Spectrometer. The performance of the Moiré fringe goniometer is such that it can be used for analysis of any elements that are not fitted as fixed channels. The analysis on the goniometer is done while the fixed channels are measuring. In addition, it can be used as a backup in case of failure of any of the fixed channels.&nbsp;Appropriate calibrations for copper alloys can be delivered turnkey from the Thermo Fisher Scientific factory. Large numbers of PET bottles and molded products are used every day in the food and beverage sectors. To recycle these materials safely and reliably, technologies are required that can accurately identify their origin. In practice, however, appearance and conventional physical properties alone are insufficient to distinguish virgin material from recycled material, creating a need for a more reliable identification method.&nbsp;For rapid identification in industrial settings, a method requiring little or no pretreatment is highly desirable. In some cases, nondestructive analysis is also needed to enable subsequent application of other analytical techniques. This article presents a practical approach in which metal catalysts present in PET are detected by EDX (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and used to distinguish material-recycled PET from virgin PET.<h4>Principle and Overview&nbsp;</h4>Metal catalysts such as antimony (Sb) and germanium (Ge) are used in the synthesis of PET resin. These catalyst metals have been reported to be useful indicators of material origin. 1),2) For example, Sb and Ge are frequently detected together in material-recycled PET, whereas only one catalyst metal is detected in chemically recycled PET and virgin PET. This likely reflects the fact that material-recycled PET is derived from a mixture of feedstocks using different catalysts.&nbsp;ICP-AES (ICP optical emission spectrometry) and ICP-MS (ICP mass spectrometry), which are commonly applied to catalyst metal analysis, provide high sensitivity and accuracy. However, they require pretreatment to convert the sample into a solution, thereby lengthening the analytical workflow. By contrast, EDX can measure solid samples directly, making it well-suited to applications requiring rapid results, such as incoming material inspection and in-line analysis in molding plants. Because EDX is non-destructive, it is also suitable for multimodal analytical workflows.&nbsp;On the other hand, some commercially available handheld EDX instruments do not support elements such as Sb and Ge. At the same time, higher-end systems may not offer the specifications or price range needed for industrial deployment. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=EDX-7200">EDX-7200</a> supports a broad range of elements with excellent cost performance. This article describes the analysis of Sb and Ge in PET using this instrument.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>EDX enables rapid and straightforward elemental analysis without cumbersome sample pretreatment. Previous studies have shown that the presence of Sb and Ge can be used to identify recycled PET. Building on this concept, this article presents a practical analytical approach based on EDX. Using the EDX-7200, which combines broad elemental coverage with excellent cost performance, the proposed method provides a practical tool for rapid on-site identification, quality control, and traceability management. When combined with physical property data and other information, this approach is expected to contribute to the safety assessment and quality assurance of recycled materials, thereby supporting a more advanced circular economy.<h3>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Optimizing lithium-ion battery recycling operations using handheld XRF analysis</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/lithium_ion_battery_recycling_handheld_xrf_analysis_an1120_en_4c00477b78.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>The shift to a low-carbon economy and the adoption of electric vehicles will drive an exponential increase in the demand for lithium-ion batteries. As a corollary to this, the International Energy Agency expects the demand for some key commodities to increase significantly over the next two decades: the demand for Copper (Cu) is anticipated to increase by more than 40%; for nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co), by 60-70% each; and for lithium (Li), by nearly 90%.¹ This will translate into increased mining activities and potentially generate larger amounts of deleterious waste.&nbsp;To reduce the environmental impact and limit reliance on scarce commodities associated with economical and geopolitical implications, several countries have implemented regulations regarding producers’ responsibilities.² These regulations contain both incentives and accountability guidelines for lithium-ion battery and electric vehicles manufacturers. Their goal is to facilitate the emergence of a circular economy in which recycling will increasingly contribute to the supply of the strategic raw materials.&nbsp;Lithium-ion batteries are made of multiple components, the most valuable being the cathode that contains between 40 and 70% ³, ⁴ of the total value of the battery, depending on its exact chemistry. As of 2023, lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxides (NCM) account for 66% of lithium-ion battery cathode active materials for electric vehicles, followed by lithium iron phosphates (LFP) which account for 24%, and lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) accounts for the remaining 10%.³<h4>Handheld X-ray Fluorescence Analysis&nbsp;</h4>Handheld X-ray fluorescence analysis (HHXRF) is an elemental analysis technique that has proven to be cost-effective in recycling areas such as scrap metal and automotive catalytic converters. HHXRF can measure elements from magnesium (Mg) to uranium (U) in various types of materials such as metals and alloys; non-metallic inorganic materials such as ceramics; or ores or plastics. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/1993">Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL2</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/1992">Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5 Plus Handheld XRF Analyzers </a>deliver accurate elemental analysis in real time, with little or no sample preparation, across multiple steps of the lithium-ion battery recycling workflow. Although handheld XRF does not detect lithium, it can measure most elements from the periodic table including nickel or cobalt which often command much higher value than the lithium in a lithium-ion battery.⁴<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>There is no ideal process to recycle lithium-ion batteries that simultaneously incorporates low environmental impact, high metal recovery yield, and economic viability. Because of the variety of technologies and materials used, recycling lithium-ion batteries is a complex journey with multiple possible paths. HHXRF helps recyclers by generating lab-quality data in real time, allowing them to optimize their processes and make fast decisions that generate significant benefits:&nbsp;<ul><li>Unwanted materials containing heavy metals such as lead or cadmium can be prevented from entering subsequent steps in the recycling workflow.&nbsp;</li><li>Materials can be accurately sorted and adequate processes for recovery selected depending on the material type (e.g., LFP vs. MCM).&nbsp;</li><li>The economic value of incoming and outgoing material can be more accurately estimated.</li></ul><h3>4. For cell therapy, the system can differentiate single cells, cell aggregates, protein aggregates, and extrinsic particles. The platform also supports flexible sample volumes and 24- or 96-well membrane formats, allowing the same general approach to be used from sample-limited early development through larger-volume and QC workflows. The brochure reports excellent quantitative linearity across serial dilutions and emphasizes the ability to preserve sample for additional orthogonal analyses.From a technical perspective, Aura Systems provide 100% sampling efficiency, a particle detection and quantitation range above 1 µm, and can handle concentrations above 3,000,000 particles/mL for 1.6 µm particles.
