This study aimed to develop a high-throughput HPLC-ICP-MS method for the simultaneous quantification of inorganic mercury (Hg²⁺) and methylmercury (MeHg⁺) in human breast milk. The method was validated using a certified reference material, achieving 99% accuracy.A 4-month analysis of breast milk samples from 10 participants examined the effects of collection method and timing on mercury speciation. The results revealed correlations between mercury species, fat content, and selenium, with MeHg⁺ concentrations being higher in hindmilk. Nevertheless, given that mercury remains a pervasive environmental pollutant, continuous global monitoring continues to be imperative.Exposure to mercury during the vulnerable period from the fetal stage to infancy is a health concern. Blood MeHg+ levels positively correlate with seafood consumption in Japan <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0100" name="bb0100" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0100">[20]</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0105" name="bb0105" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0105">[21]</a>, and inorganic mercury exposure is heavily influenced by dental amalgams <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0110" name="bb0110" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0110">[22]</a> and gold mining <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0115" name="bb0115" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0115">[23]</a>.&nbsp;In Japan,&nbsp;dental amalgams have rarely been used&nbsp;since the 1990s <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0120" name="bb0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0120">[24]</a>.&nbsp;In addition, Hg2+ exposure is also lower now because of the reduced use of mercury in thermometers and other devices.Thus fat, MeHg+ in breast milk has been analyzed mainly using gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0190" name="bb0190" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0190">[38]</a>; however, the&nbsp;pretreatment for such measurements is complicated, and the analytical volume required is large. It is especially important to establish a method that can adequately analyze even small amounts of colostrum because sample volumes are small. Consequently, the following prerequisites must be met for a comprehensive investigation of breast milk, including colostrum: 1) the minimum analytical volume of the sample must be feasible; 2) pretreatment must be straightforward; and 3) validation must be viable, with the methodology being proved highly reliable. In this study, we developed a high-throughput and sensitive analytical method for the separate determination of chemical species of mercury in breast milk that satisfies the above requirements.This study was designed to achieve three objectives. The first was to develop a straightforward approach for analyzing mercury speciation in breast milk. The second was to ascertain the impact of the sampling methodology and timing on the concentrations of Hg2+ and MeHg+ in breast milk. The third was to elucidate the relationships between the Hg2+ and MeHg+ contents and the contents of the other elements and fats.<h3>2. Methods</h3><h4>2.3. HPLC apparatus and conditions</h4>Separation was performed on a metal-free YMC-Triart C18 HPLC column (YMC CO., LTD., Kyoto, Japan), installed in an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=1260+Bio-inert+LC">Agilent 1260 Bio-inert LC</a> system consisting of a G5611A Bio-inert quaternary pump, G5611A Bio-inert high-performance autosampler, and a G1390B isocratic pump (Agilent Technologies Inc., Santa Clara, CA, USA). The outlet of the HPLC column was connected directly to an ICP-MS nebulizer (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#t0010" name="bt0010" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="t0010">Table 2</a>).<h4>2.4. ICP-MS device and conditions</h4>An <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=8900+ICP-QQQ">Agilent 8900 ICP-QQQ </a>(Agilent Technologies Inc.) was used for speciation analysis and elemental concentration measurements. The introduction system consisted of a micro-mist nebulizer, a quartz double-pass spray chamber, and a quartz torch with a diameter of 2.5 mm. The total element concentration analysis was performed using the ICP-MS equipped with an SPS 4 Autosampler (Agilent Technologies, Inc.) [49].<h3>3. Results and discussion</h3><h4>3.2.3. Comparison of total mercury levels measured by HPLC-ICP-MS and ICP-MS</h4>To validate the developed method, we compared the sum of the Hg2+ and MeHg+ concentrations obtained using HPLC-ICP-MS with the total mercury concentration quantified via ICP-MS analysis. We analyzed foremilk and hindmilk samples from 10 participants in four sampling rounds (N = 80). The median concentrations (ng g−1) for the 80 samples were 0.109 (5th–95th percentile: 0.014–0.365) for Hg2+ and 0.220 (5th–95th percentile: 0.046–0.792) for MeHg+. The Hg2+ and MeHg+ concentrations in all the breast milk samples were above the MDL. The ICP-MS determination method for the total mercury and other elemental contents has been previously published <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0245" name="bb0245" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0245">[49]</a>. NIST SRM 1953 was used as the reference material to validate the determination of total mercury, as well as other elements using ICP-MS (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#s0120" name="bs0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="s0120">Supplemental Table 2</a>). No mercury chemical species other than Hg2+ and MeHg+ were present in breast milk, as determined by HPLC-ICP-MS; therefore, the sum of Hg2+ and MeHg+ was taken to be the total mercury in breast milk. To validate the analytical method, the distributions of total mercury as measured using HPLC-ICP-MS and ICP-MS were plotted. The results from the two methods were found to be strongly correlated (R2&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.895, Pearson’s correlation coefficient&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.946) (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#f0010" name="bf0010" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="f0010">Fig. 2</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#s0120" name="bs0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="s0120">Supplemental Table 3</a>). The effects of adjusting the fat content were also investigated. The values showed better agreement in samples with low fat contents, whereas there was more variation in samples with high fat contents. For samples with high fat contents, the correlation improved upon fat content adjustment (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#s0120" name="bs0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="s0120">Supplemental Table 4</a>). A Bland–Altman plot was used to assess the agreement between the two methods (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#f0015" name="bf0015" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="f0015">Fig. 3</a>). The results of the two measurement methods were generally in agreement. However, discrepancies were observed at lower concentrations. Conclusion</h3>We developed a high-throughput and sensitive method for analyzing mercury speciation in breast milk using HPLC-ICP-MS. The method was validated by analyzing NIST SRM 1953, comparing the values obtained with the total mercury concentrations obtained via ICP-MS analysis.&nbsp;Hg2+ and MeHg+ were detected in all the samples of foremilk and hindmilk provided monthly for 4&nbsp;months by the 10 participants. MeHg+ concentrations differed significantly between foremilk and hindmilk samples but not between samples obtained 2 and 5&nbsp;months postpartum. In contrast, Hg2+ concentrations in the foremilk and hindmilk did not differ and were correlated with selenium concentrations. Breast milk composition differs significantly between colostrum, transitional milk, and mature milk. Hence, a large cross-sectional study using our method will reveal the level of infant exposure to each chemical species of mercury.

In atomic layer deposition (ALD), they enable the controlled growth of ultrathin films on semiconductor substrates—an essential capability for scaling advanced device architectures. Because even trace metal impurities in precursors can degrade film performance and device yield, both suppliers and manufacturers routinely analyze these materials. Due to its sensitivity and multi-elemental capabilities, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is the industry standard for assessing elemental impurities in semiconductor materials.1 However, the high concentration of the metallic (high-matrix) content of precursors and the prevalence of polyatomic and doubly charged ion (M++) spectral overlaps arising from the matrix on key analytes present challenges for accurate analysis by single-quadrupole ICP-MS. At one time, high-resolution (HR)-ICP-MS (m/Δm up to 10000) was the best choice for solving these kinds of analytical problems. But some interferences require a resolution that exceeds the capability of current HR-ICP-MS instruments. In these cases, the samples are sometimes diluted to reduce the concentration of matrix elements, but dilution cannot totally solve the interference and may negatively affect detection limits.&nbsp;Triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ or ICP-MS/MS) combined with collision/reaction (CRC) gases overcomes these limitations by selectively removing or avoiding interferences without compromising sensitivity. Agilent ICP-QQQ systems use two quadrupoles (Q1 and Q2) as unit mass filters, enabling MS/MS operation and the controlled use of reactive cell gases. Q1 controls which ions enter the CRC and Q2 controls which ions reach the detector.2–4&nbsp;In this study, we evaluated the performance of the Agilent 8900 ICP-QQQ to determine key analytes in three simulated precursor materials. Each sample contained a highconcentration matrix of hafnium (Hf), zirconium (Zr), or molybdenum (Mo), which cause interferences on platinum (Pt), silver (Ag), and cadmium (Cd) and titanium (Ti), respectively. To demonstrate the 8900 ICP-QQQ system’s ability to remove spectral interferences without sacrificing sensitivity, we quantified the four analytes in the three matrices using optimized instrument operating conditions.<h4>Experimental</h4><h4>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h4>An <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=8900+ICP-QQQ">Agilent 8900 Semiconductor configuration ICP-QQQ</a> (#200) fitted with the optional m-lens was used for all measurements. The 8900 #200 includes an inert (HF-resistant) sample introduction system comprising a 200 μL/min MicroFlow PFA nebulizer, a PFA spray chamber, endcap, and connector tube, and a demountable torch with a 2.5 mm internal diameter (id) sapphire injector. The cones comprised a Pt-tipped sampling cone and Pt-tipped, Ni-based skimmer cone for m-lens. The samples were self-aspirated using an Agilent SPS 4 autosampler. Hot plasma conditions (1% CeO+ /Ce+ ) were used during the analysis of the high-matrix samples.&nbsp;The 8900 ICP-QQQ was operated in MS/MS mode for all measurements. Ammonia (NH3 ) —plus a flow of helium (He) as a buffer gas—and oxygen (O2 ) were used as reactive cell gases to resolve the matrix-based interferences. Various CRC tuning modes and Q1–Q2 mass setting combinations were tested to obtain the best conditions for each analyte. The optimized operating conditions for the analysis are detailed in Table 1.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The Agilent 8900 Semiconductor configuration ICP-QQQ was evaluated for its ability to eliminate spectral interferences on four analytes—Pt, Ag, Cd, and Ti—in simulated semiconductor precursor materials using MS/MS and reactive cell gases. To accommodate challenging samples comprising Hf (500 ppm), Zr (500 ppm), and Mo (360 ppm) under hot plasma conditions (1% CeO+ /Ce+ ), the 8900 was equipped with the optional m-lens.&nbsp;Ammonia was applied in both on-mass and mass-shift modes to quantify Pt, Ag, and Cd at single-digit or sub-ppt levels. Oxygen on-mass mode effectively removed Mo-based doubly charged ion interferences on Ti, enabling accurate detection at single-digit ppt concentrations. Repeated analysis of the MoCl5 samples spiked at 50 ppt with %RSDs below 10% demonstrated the instrument’s robustness and consistent performance for ultratrace quantification in complex matrices.&nbsp;The 8900 ICP-QQQ delivered low background, high sensitivity, and reliable interference control, making it suitable for method development and trace-level screening of semiconductor materials.<h3>2. Metrohm: Fat content analysis in olive pomace with NIR spectroscopy</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_137_download_bb86ed4a7f.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Olive pomace is the main residue of the olive oil extraction process. It is a thick sludge – the remaining pulpy material after most of the oil is removed from the olive paste. To extract the remaining oil it contains, the olive pomace is treated with solvents. After refining and mixing this with edible virgin olive oil for flavor, aroma, and color, olive pomace oil is obtained. Olive pomace oil is used in cooking for its milder flavor and stability at high temperatures [1], as well as being nutritionally relevant due to its high oleic acid content (C18:1) [2]. Olive pomace fat analysis is necessary to check the efficiency of the oil removal process. The official method to determine this requires a time-consuming drying step followed by solvent extraction. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a fast, chemical-free method for olive pomace testing without any sample preparation.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT</h4>140 samples of olive pomace were measured on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=56&amp;search=NIR+Analyzer">Metrohm NIR Analyzer</a>. All measurements were performed in reflection mode (1000–2250 nm) using the large cup accessory. The samples were measured in rotation to collect spectral data from several areas. Spectral averaging of signals from several spots helped to reduce sample inhomogeneity. Metrohm software was used for all data acquisition and prediction model development.<h4>RESULTS</h4>The obtained NIR spectra of olive pomace samples (Figure 1) were used to create a prediction model for quantification of fat content. The quality of the prediction model was evaluated using a correlation diagram (Figure 2) which displays a high correlation between the NIR prediction and the reference values measured with Soxhlet extraction. The respective figures of merit (FOM) display the expected precision of a prediction during routine analysis.<h4>CONCLUSION&nbsp;</h4>This Application Note shows the feasibility of using NIR spectroscopy for olive pomace fat analysis. By using NIRS, chemical-free analysis can be conducted within seconds—a quick, easy, cost-effective alternative to determine the efficiency of the olive pomace oil removal process.<h3>3. Therefore, the International Council on Harmonisation of Technical Requirementsfor Registration for Pharmaceuticalsfor Human Use requires the management of metallic impurities in pharmaceuticals through guidelines using ICP-MS (ICH Q3D) 1), 2) . This standard specifies the Permitted Daily Exposure (PDE) for 24 elements of toxicological concern in oral preparations, injectables, and inhalants.&nbsp;In the case of oral preparations, only the seven elements of Classes 1 and 2A are considered, except in instances where elements are intentionally added, such as when used as catalysts during synthesis. However, the sources of elemental impurities are diverse and include not only components such as active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients but also manufacturing equipment and utensils.&nbsp;ICP-MS has the advantage of being able to analyze various trace elements simultaneously. It is often used for the analysis of elemental impuritiesin pharmaceuticals. The analyte for ICP-MS is usually a liquid sample, so solid samples require pretreatment.&nbsp;In this Application News, we measured three types of pharmaceutical raw materials and analyzed the impurities using the Shimadzu ICP-MS organic solvent system. Furthermore, the accuracy, precision, detection limits and specificity of 24 target elements are presented according to USP3), 4) and EP, assuming measurements below the Control Threshold of 30 % of the PDE.<h4>Instrument Configurations and Analysis Conditions&nbsp;</h4>Table 2 shows the instrument configuration for ICP-MS (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=ICPMS-2040">ICPMS-2040</a>). The organic solvent system was used to introduce the ethanol. By using the platinum sampling cone, damage from long-term exposure to organic solvents during analysis can be reduced. To reduce the labor required for sample preparation, the internal standards were added using the Online Internal Standard Kit. The analysis conditions are shown in Table 3.<h4>Accuracy and Precision Validation Results&nbsp;</h4>Measurements were carried out for n = 3 spiked samples with the target concentration of 50 % and 150 %, and n = 6 spiked samples with the target concentration and the blank (unspiked) sample. Spike recovery was calculated by averaging the quantitative values of all samples. Tables 6 to 8 show the measurement results.&nbsp;Accuracy: Spike recovery of the samples at each of the target concentrations of 50 %, 100 %, and 150 % was in the range of 94 % to 111 %, thereby satisfying the acceptance criterion. Precision (Repeatability): RSD of the spiked samples with the target concentration ranged from 0.27 % to 3.79 %, satisfying the acceptance criterion.&nbsp;Limit of quantitation: As accuracy for 50 % of the target concentration satisfied the acceptance criterion, the limit of quantitation could be confirmed.&nbsp;<h4>Specificity&nbsp;</h4>ICP-MS analysis often requires evaluation for potential interference by isotypes, polyatomic ions originating from Ar, oxides of coexistent elements and chloride ions. Here, the Cd was assessed. MoO, originating from the Class 3 element Mo, causes interference with Cd. A 1350 μg/L Mo solution (concentration equivalent to 1.5J) was analyzed, and the amount of interference with Cd was measured. Here, in addition to using collision gas, interelement correction was also performed. Table 5 shows the results.&nbsp;When the collision gas was used without interelement correction, interference by MoO was reduced but not eliminated. However, the quantitative value was below the lower limit of detection when the collision gas was used in combination with interelement correction. This result confirmed that the use of interelement correction, together with a collision gas, enables the appropriate correction of interference that could not be eliminated by the collision gas alone.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In this Application News, we measured three types of pharmaceutical raw materials and analyzed 24 elements indicated in the ICH Q3D guideline using the Shimadzu ICP-MS organic solvent system. In accordance with the pharmacopeias (USP, EP), the accuracy, precision, quantification limit, and specificity were confirmed. The results of the validation demonstrated that the performance meets the acceptance criteria with a sufficient margin. Based on the above, it was determined that the Shimadzu ICPMS-2040 is an effective analytical method for the 24-element analysis of pharmaceutical raw materials that can be dissolved in ethanol.

Agilent Technologies: Analysis of Soil and Sediments by ICP-MS with Advanced Sample Introduction Tools</h3>Simplified sample preparation enabled by the Agilent Mira Mist Nebulizer and an In-Line Particle Filter<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_enviro_soil_sample_prep_9500_icp_qqq_5994_9126en_agilent_8299f007e9.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>ICP-MS is widely employed for monitoring inorganic elements in soil and sediments, with established methods such as US EPA 6020B providing a validated framework for the accurate, multi‑element analysis of environmental samples.1 In a separate study, we demonstrated the outstanding performance capabilities of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> (ICP-QQQ) in compliance with EPA 6020B requirements.2 The instrument, which includes the Ultra High Matrix Introduction (UHMI) system for enhanced plasma stability and robustness, employed Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode to achieve lower limits of detection (LODs) compared to conventional cell gas approaches.3,4The two collision/reaction cell (CRC) modes of operation were enabled by the Agilent Dual-Cell System (DCS) —a unique CRC that provides the following performance advantages when operated in AHM and Air cell mode: – AHM – This innovative He-based gas collision-cell mode significantly enhances sensitivity for low-mass analytes while providing robust interference removal across the entire mass range. – This single gas mode eliminates the need for multiple modes, replacing no gas, conventional He, and high energy (HE) He mode. – Air cell mode – Using oxygen (O2 ) from air and an integrated air filter for the 9500 ICP-QQQ, Air cell mode leverages reactions between O2 and analytes to improve detection limits (DLs) for oxygen-reactive species. – Air cell mode effectively eliminates interferences, including M++ that are challenging to resolve using He-based gas methods.5 – With an unlimited supply of O2 in air, Air cell mode eliminates the need for O2 gas cylinders, reducing operating costs and simplifying workflows.Of all the ICP-MS nebulizers, the Agilent Mira Mist nebulizer offers the best resistance to concentrated acids and organic solvents. Its parallel path design ensures good tolerance to high levels of particulates and total dissolved solids (TDS), providing excellent resistance to clogging. In this study, the 9500 ICP-QQQ equipped with an in-line particle filter and Mira Mist nebulizer was used to determine trace and major elements in five environmental certified reference materials (CRMs) and a real sediment sample. The performance of the method was evaluated according to criteria set out in EPA Method 6020B.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>All measurements were performed using an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</a> that includes the following standard components: nickel (Ni) interface cones and newly designed DCS cell. The design features and functionality of the 9500 and DCS are explained elsewhere.3,4 The 9500 was also equipped with the optional Agilent Advanced Valve System (AVS&nbsp;MS) discrete sampling system for improved productivity. The AVS&nbsp;MS system’s high-speed piston pump works seamlessly with the Agilent SPS 4 and SPS&nbsp;6 autosamplers for sample delivery, ensuring the high sample throughput necessary to meet the operational needs of most environmental testing laboratories.To optimize signal stability with the Mira Mist nebulizer, the nebulizer pump speed was adjusted and a makeup gas was introduced (Table 1). In the 9500 ICP-QQQ, both the makeup gas and dilution gas can be added, enabling finer control of the plasma gas flow rates to optimize signal %RSD within the target sensitivity zone. The lens parameters were set automatically using the Autotune function in the software. The in-line filter’s internal volume is sufficiently small that its presence does not influence AVS MS sample introduction timing or method parameters. As a result, the same settings were used with and without the filter installed (Table 2).<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In this study, sediment samples were analyzed in accordance with EPA Method 6020B using the Agilent 9500 ICP‑QQQ with UHMI and the optional AVS MS. The system was equipped with advanced sample introduction components, including the Mira Mist nebulizer and an in‑line particle filter.&nbsp;The combination of the Mira Mist nebulizer and in-line filter enabled the analysis of sediment digests without a dedicated filtration step, reducing sample preparation time and consumable costs. At the same time, the configuration minimized the risk of sample introduction blockages, supporting robust and reliable long-term ICP-QQQ operation for complex environmental matrices.Overall, the 9500 ICP-QQQ with the Mira Mist nebulizer and the in-line particle filter achieved excellent analytical data:&nbsp;<ul><li>Low detection limits in the low ng/L (ppt) range for most analytes&nbsp;</li><li>The same or similar washout efficiency of sticky elements as a standard sample introduction configuration&nbsp;</li><li>The same sample introduction timing, regardless of whether the filter was installed or not&nbsp;</li><li>Method robustness and reproducibility over more than eight hours of continuous measurements, as demonstrated by the recoveries of ISTDs and CCVs within the limits specified in EPA Method 6020B&nbsp;</li><li>Recoveries of all certified elements in the five environmental CRMs, matrix spike sample, and spiked real sediment sample within ±10%, confirming the effective control of interferences using AHM and Air cell mode&nbsp;</li></ul>The study has highlighted how the 9500 ICP-QQQ with the Mira Mist nebulizer and in‑line particle filter enhances sample preparation efficiency and analytical performance for the analysis of complex sediment digests.<h3>2. Although some of these elements are highly toxic, there are cases in which it is difficult to distinguish them at an early stage because they lack specific symptoms of poisoning. Therefore, analytical methods for rapid screening of these elements are required in forensic research.&nbsp;Inorganic elements are generally analyzed by ICP-AES or ICP-MS. Although these techniques allow trace-level quantitation, they require chemical pretreatment such as dilution and deproteinization, and the samples are limited to liquid specimens. In contrast, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF - <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=EDX-7200">EDX-7200</a>) offers sufficient sensitivity in the concentration range associated with poisoning and enables simple, non-destructive analysis in a short time.&nbsp;This application describesthe results of quantitative analysis of 15 elements in urine by the calibration curve method, and qualquantitative analysis by the FP (Fundamental Parameter) method based on sensitivity coefficients installed in the instrument. The errors in the quantitative values obtained by the FP-based qualquantitative analysis method were approximately ±20 %, indicating that sufficient quantitative accuracy was achieved. Screening can be performed within 10 minutes persample.<h4>Conclusion</h4>The FP method demonstrated high accuracy for quantitation without calibration curves. Furthermore, urine samples do not require complicated pretreatment such as protein removal, and the analysis time is as short as approximately 10 minutes per sample. This method is well suited for poisoning screening in forensic research.<h3>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Analysis of copper alloys with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1978">ARL X900 XRF Spectrometer</a></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/analysis_of_copper_alloys_arl_9900_an41427_203b52e126.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul><h4>Copper alloys&nbsp;</h4>are very important products because they are used for many applications and many manufacturing processes as described in the next few paragraphs. It is important to accurately analyze these materials to confirm compliance of their chemical specifications that imply physical properties, like conductivity, compressive strength, hardness, resistance to traction and to abrasion. High product quality and efficient production can be ensured with accurate analysis results. Copper alloys Pure copper is mixed with other elements to produce a wide range of alloys: Brasses (Cu-Zn), bronzes (Cu-Sn), gun metal (Cu-Sn-Zn) used for casting due to its excellent fluidity, for valves, taps and water fittings. Manganese bronzes (Cu-Zn-Mn) are not true bronzes as Sn is not the essential constituent. Used for rudders, propellers, and ship fittings. Cupro-nickel (Cu-Ni) used for coins, tubes, wires, electrical resistances, and thermocouples. Nickel silver (Cu-Ni-Zn) used for marine applications, car radiators and fittings.&nbsp;<h4>Brass&nbsp;</h4>One of the most important non-ferrous engineering alloys. It covers a large range of physical properties with multiple applications. Copper can hold about 39% of zinc in solid solution. Alloys containing less than 39% Zn are known as α-brasses. This brass (70/30) is very widely employed for cartridge, cases, condenser tubes, etc. From 39% to 46% of Zn, a β-solid solution gives αβ-brass. This alloy (60/40) is found in extensive engineering applications with enhanced corrosion resistance used in marine applications. Alloys containing more than 49% Zn are very hard and only used for brazing brasses.<h4>Instrument parameters and conditions&nbsp;</h4>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1978">ARL X900 XRF Spectrometer</a> can accommodate up to 24 fixed monochromator channels alongside the goniometer or up to 32 fixed monochromator channels when no goniometer is fitted. New high counting fixed channel monochromators using an SCX detector are available to further improve the precision of analysis, especially for elements like Cu, Zn and Ni.Our unique proprietary Moiré fringe goniometer ensures speed, flexibility and reliability of analysis thanks to the clever frictionfree positioning system. Up to nine crystals and four collimators can be fitted. With the two detectors (flow proportional and scintillation counters), precise elemental analysis from Boron to Californium is possible.&nbsp;The ARL X900 XRF spectrometer can be calibrated using commercially available certified reference materials (CRM) or well analyzed samples from the user. Calibrations can be delivered from the factory, hence reducing the commissioning time at the customer’s site.&nbsp;It should be stressed that an XRF spectrometer is a very accurate comparator, but the accuracy of the final analysis is entirely dependent on the quality of the standards used for calibration and on the care and reproducibility of sample preparation which must be identical for CRMs and for routine samples as well.This application note only includes data obtained mostly on fixed channels and on some goniometer channels. For more results using goniometer channels please refer to AN41426.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Analysis of all sorts of copper alloys can be performed with ease using the ARL X900 Simultaneous-Sequential XRF Spectrometer. The performance of the Moiré fringe goniometer is such that it can be used for analysis of any elements that are not fitted as fixed channels. The analysis on the goniometer is done while the fixed channels are measuring. In addition, it can be used as a backup in case of failure of any of the fixed channels.&nbsp;Appropriate calibrations for copper alloys can be delivered turnkey from the Thermo Fisher Scientific factory. Owing to their distinct physical and chemical properties, engineered nanoparticles are incorporated into a wide range of products to enhance performance or functionality. At the same time, they are increasingly recognized as potential contaminants or pollutants. In the semiconductor industry, for example, even single-digit nanometer-sized sNPs present in process chemicals can cause electrical shorting to occur and reduce product yield. Although the effects of sNPs on environmental and biological systems are still being investigated, researchers have developed methods to determine sNPs using single particle-ICP-MS (spICP-MS).1 Agilent ICP-MS instruments are widely used to characterize sNPs because of their fast-scanning multi-element capability, ultra-high sensitivity, low background, and integrated data analysis software.2-5sNPs are decomposed, atomized, and ionized in the high-energy ICP. Any ions that are generated from a particle enter the vacuum chamber as ion clusters and are then detected as transient signal peaks above the background signal. The signal from each sNP event usually lasts between 400 and 1,300 µs. To detect this short-lived signal with high resolution, a fast time-resolved analysis (fast-TRA) acquisition is employed. Typically, a default dwell time of 100 µs is used. However, if higher peak resolution is required, the Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) can be operated with a dwell time as low as 50 µs. During the development of the 9500 ICP-QQQ, improvements to the instrument’s hardware enabled reliable control of TRA at much shorter timing intervals. These enhancements enable the 9500 to operate with high stability at a 50&nbsp;µs dwell time, making it an effective instrument for high-resolution sNP analysis. The robust plasma of Agilent ICP-MS instruments, as indicated by a CeO+ /Ce+ ratio &lt; 1%, also reduces matrix effects between standards and samples.&nbsp;In this study, we conducted a fundamental evaluation of sNP analysis using a dwell time of 50 µs. Gold (Au), silica (SiO2 ), and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles were analyzed by the 9500 ICP-QQQ, and the results were compared with those obtained with a 100 µs dwell time.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=+9500+ICP-QQQ">Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</a> used the standard configuration (Ni cones and u-lens), except for the torch. A quartz torch with a 1.5 mm inner diameter (id) injector was used to minimize diffusion of ion clusters in the ICP and obtain sharper, better-resolved peaks.&nbsp;Multi-element NP data acquisition and analysis were carried out using the Rapid Multi-Element Nanoparticle Analysis mode of the optional Single Nanoparticle Application Module for the Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software. In Rapid MultiElement Nanoparticle Analysis mode, multi-element data are collected sequentially from a single sample acquisition, and all data are combined into a single file. This method saves time, as only one sample uptake and rinse are needed for all analytes. Data quality is likely enhanced, since the risk of sample contamination is considerably lower with a single analysis than with multiple separate analyses.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>For high-resolution nanoparticle analysis, the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ can be operated in single-particle mode with a 50 µs dwell time, as well as the default 100&nbsp;µs setting. The reduction of dwell time is enabled by advancements in both hardware and software that work together to support higher-resolution single-nanoparticle measurements.&nbsp;Improved peak resolution was demonstrated for Au, SiO2 , and Pt nanoparticles, while maintaining equivalent performance to the standard 100&nbsp;µs dwell time setting. The mean particle sizes obtained at 50&nbsp;µs for the nanoparticle suspensions were within the manufacturer’s certified ranges. Depending on the intended application, mechanical properties are measured by material testing, but to achieve further improvements in performance, it is necessary to observe the origin of fracture and the condition of crack propagation. However, glass displays brittle fracture behavior, which is difficult to observe visually. In our previous reports, we observed the fracture behavior of glass specimens in ring-on-ring tests 1, 2, and those observation results indicated that a high-speed video camera with a recording speed (framerate) of several Mfps or higher is required to observe the fracture behavior of glass. In this experiment, the fracture behavior of a glass tube during a compression test was observed with an HPV-X3 high-speed video camera. In addition, synchronous videorecording was carried out using two HPV-X3 cameras, and the strain distribution during fracture was visualized by a 3D-DIC (three-dimensional digital correlation) analysis.<h4>Specimen Information and Measurement System</h4>The glass tube used as the specimen was compressed in the axial direction using an AGX-V2 precision universal testing machine. Table 1 and Table 2 show the equipment configuration and the specimen dimensions, respectively. While handheld XRF can identify most grades of stainless steel, as well as titanium, nickel, cobalt, and copper alloys within 1 to 2 seconds, sorting aluminum alloys can take significantly longer. This is especially true if those alloys cannot be specifically identified by the content of their transition metals, such as manganese, copper zinc, nickel, iron chromium or titanium. The separation of grades within the AA 1000, AA 5000 and AA 6000 series, as well as casting alloy family grade separation, requires the measurement of light elements such as magnesium or silicon. Those elements are generally measured using an X-ray beam with a lower voltage, which results in longer measurements of typically 10&nbsp;seconds or more. About a decade ago, handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) emerged as an alternative for sorting aluminum and magnesium alloy grades within a few seconds. These include the smaller spot size and fluctuations related to the transient nature of the laser-induced plasma. Compared to a wider, continuous beam of X-rays, LIBS analysis is intrinsically more sensitive to surface roughness and surface contamination, and thus less precise than HHXRF.&nbsp;More recently, the Light Metal Quick Sort (LMQS) mode available on the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1992">Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5 series of handheld XRF analyzers </a>uses a different logic than conventional HHXRF instruments. To help laboratories transition to ICP-MS for these important environmental applications, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first introduced the performance-based test Method 6020 in 2007, and revised it as Method 6020B in 2014.1 Method 6020B remains widely used worldwide for the quantitative measurement of a broad range of elements, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and lead (Pb), in solid and aqueous wastes by ICP-MS.&nbsp;Traditionally, single-quadrupole ICP-MS (SQ ICP-MS) instruments equipped with collision/reaction cells (CRCs) have been used to meet the requirements of Method 6020B for sample analysis. Laboratories have typically used a combination of acquisition strategies to control interferences, including no gas mode for interference-free analytes and low mass analytes, helium (He) collision mode for analytes affected by polyatomic ion interferences, and half-mass mode to correct doubly charged ion (M2+) interferences. This multi-mode approach has enabled laboratories to meet Method 6020B performance and quality control (QC) criteria over many years.&nbsp;Now, for the first time, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> featuring the Dual-Cell System (DCS) cell introduces two innovative cell gas modes, Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode.2,3 These modes simplify interference removal approaches, enhance analytical performance, and accelerate analysis timesIn this study, a range of environmentally certified reference materials (CRMs) was selected to represent sample types routinely analyzed in high-throughput environmental testing laboratories. As these laboratories prioritize productivity across all aspects of their operations to remain competitive, the 9500 ICP-QQQ configuration and analytical method were optimized to maximize sample throughput. The performance of the method was evaluated according to criteria set out in Method 6020B.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The study has shown that the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ, equipped with the unique Dual-Cell System (DCS) and the optional AVS&nbsp;MS discrete sampling system, is ideal for high-throughput, multi-element analysis of soil and sediment samples.&nbsp;The use of the EPA 6020B Preset Method and selection of UHMI-4 plasma conditions in the Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software enabled rapid setup of the instrument’s operating parameters, ensuring consistent performance across operators.&nbsp;The instrument’s matrix-tolerant plasma (low CeO/Ce ratio), UHMI, and DCS effectively addressed the challenges of analyzing high-matrix samples, including signal drift, ion suppression, and spectral interferences, thereby delivering an optimized analytical workflow.&nbsp;The method’s productivity was enhanced by operating the DCS in Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode and by using short integration times, saving 5 to 10 s per sample. AHM replaces conventional no gas, helium (He) collision, and high energy He (HEHe) in a single mode, while Air cell mode uses oxygen from the laboratory, alleviating the need for gas cylinders. The 9500 maintains exceptionally high sensitivity in AHM and Air cell mode, minimizing background signals.&nbsp;Overall, the 9500 ICP-QQQ with DCS achieved excellent analytical data:&nbsp;<ul><li>Low detection limits in the low ng/L (ppt) range for most analytes.&nbsp;</li><li>Removal of M2+ interferences on Ca, As, and Se generated by Sr and rare earth elements (REEs) in the soil samples using Air cell mode.&nbsp;</li><li>Recoveries of all certified elements in the five environmental CRMs or matrix spike samples within 100 ± 10%, confirming the effective control of interferences using AHM and Air cell mode.&nbsp;</li><li>Method robustness and reproducibility over more than eight hours of continuous measurements, as demonstrated by the recoveries of ISTDs and CCVs within the limits specified in EPA Method 6020.&nbsp;</li></ul>The 9500 ICP-QQQ with DCS and an integrated AVS MS enables high-throughput, routine analysis of complex environmental matrices. The batteries consist of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, an electrolyte, and a separator. Positive electrodes use transition metal oxides (e.g., lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide [NMC]) or lithium iron phosphate (LFP) to transfer lithium, and negative electrodes generally use graphite and, recently, high-capacity materials, such as silicon. One of the issues with lithium-ion batteries is that the positive and negative electrodes are prone to cracking. This is caused by the high pressures during manufacturing, as well as during charging and discharging. This is also thought to affect their performance, such as the cycle properties. Therefore, research is being conducted on the relationship between mechanical properties and the electrochemical performance. 1), 2) This Application News presents compression tests on various battery materials as examples of quantitative evaluations of their mechanical properties. The MCT series of microcompression testing machines can perform compression testing of minute single particles. In addition, the MCT-AD model can automatically perform extraction of measurement particles, length measurements, and test operations. This results in significant time savings and enables evaluations with a larger number of measurements.<h4>MCT-AD Micro Compression Testing Machine&nbsp;</h4>Fig. 1 shows the MCT-AD and the measurement principle. The MCT compressed single particles placed on a lower compression plate using a flat indenter. Then, using data on diameters of the particles obtained in advance, a test forcedisplacement graph was created that measured various types of strength of the particles. The MCT-AD automatically performs selection of the measurement particles, length measurements, and cleaning of the indenter, which in the past had to be performed manually by the operator after each measurement. This enables continuous testing up to 100 times while consolidating the operation time by the operator and reducing labor.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This Application News presents a mechanical evaluation by the MCT-AD of materials used in the electrodes of lithium-ion batteries. Traditionally, this measurement process imposes a heavy workload on operators. But since the MCT-AD automatically performs extraction of measurement particles, length measurements, and test operations, there are significant labor savings, and the need for highly skilled operators is also eliminated. Zn-Ni coatings offer superior corrosion resistance compared to pure zinc coatings and often replace cadmium coatings, as they provide comparable or better properties while complying with regulations such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Commonly used in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries, Zn-Ni coatings are often applied to fasteners, connectors, and structural parts exposed to corrosive environments.&nbsp;Zn-Ni coatings typically consist of 85-93% zinc (Zn) and 7-15% nickel (Ni). The exact composition may vary depending on the application’s specific requirements. The coating process involves electroplating, which consists of immersing the metal substrate in an electrolyte solution containing zinc and nickel ions. An electric current is then passed through the solution, causing the zinc-nickel alloy to deposit onto the substrate. To ensure that specifications for coated parts are met, metal finishing companies must verify both the coating thickness and composition.<h4>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h4>X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is the technology of choice for quality control of Zn-Ni plating, as it is the only analytical method that can determine the thickness and composition of the coating layer non-destructively. The use of handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (HHXRF) instruments enables near-line analyses of finished products, which can be analyzed directly without being cut and brought to a separate chamber with benchtop instruments.&nbsp;In previous work [1], the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1992">Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5 Plus Handheld XRF Analyzer </a>was demonstrated to be capable of measuring the coating weight or coating thickness of up to 4 layers of metal coatings on a substrate, using a proprietary standardless “fundamental parameters” algorithm. The layers and the substrate can be pure elements or alloys. Although the fundamental parameters algorithm can determine the thickness of Zn-Ni plating standardless, it delivers partial information, as the composition of the layer is not measured. To measure the composition and the thickness of the coatings simultaneously, another approach using empirical calibration can be deployed. The Niton XL5 Plus User Mode enables the operators to create their own calibration curves based on the measurements carried out on reference materials of Zn-Ni plated samples with known coating thickness and composition.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Performing quality control of Zn-Ni coatings is essential for metal finishers to ensure the corrosion resistance of critical parts used in the automotive and aerospace industries. They provide separation, filtration, drainage, and reinforcement, improving soil stability, load distribution, and the durability of infrastructure such as roads, railways, embankments, landfills, and retaining structures.&nbsp;During transportation, installation, and service geotextiles can be exposed to concentrated loads and sharp objects which can reduce the effectiveness of materials therefore puncture resistance is a critical parameter for evaluating geotextile durability. The puncture resistance of geotextiles are commonly determined as per ASTM D62411) and ISO 122362), which measures the force required to penetrate the fabrics using a standard plunger. Overall, puncture resistance testing plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term durability and reliability of geotextilesin demanding engineering applications.&nbsp;The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=AGS-X2">Shimadzu AGS-X2 series Universal Testing Machine </a>is a high-precision universal testing system designed for accurate evaluation of mechanical properties such as tensile, compression, and puncture resistance. It features advanced control technology, high data acquisition rates, and reliable load measurement, ensuring consistent and reproducible results. The system is operated using TRAPEZIUMX-V software, enabling efficient test control, data acquisition, and analysis that complies with national and international standards.<h4>2. Test Method&nbsp;</h4>The test was conducted on the non-woven geotextile using the AGS-50kNX2D UTM, shown in the Figure 1. Two different samples (1000 and 400 GSM) were procured from the market and five specimens were prepared from various areas of each sample. Table 1 shows testing apparatus and test conditions and Figure 2 shows the typical clamping and loading system.<h4>4. Conclusion</h4>The test results are consistent across multiple specimens and exhibit gradual deformation behavior. This indicates that the material can withstand high penetration forces without sudden failure, demonstrating its ability to effectively resist localized stresses.&nbsp;Geotextiles are available in different GSM values, representing mass per unit area and directly influence their mechanical and physical performance. Lower GSM geotextiles are lighter, flexible and lower thickness making them suitable for applications involving moderate loads. In contrast higher GSM geotextiles are thicker and denser, offering significantly higher puncture resistance and making them suitable for heavy duty applications.&nbsp;The Shimadzu’s universal testing machine AGS-X2 series demonstrated accurate, stable, and repeatable performance for conducting puncture resistance testing in accordance with ASTM D6241 and ISO 12236. The system provided precise control of crosshead speed, reliable load measurement, and clear identification of the initial peak load as required by the standard. The high-resolution load–displacement data acquisition enabled accurate determination of puncture strength and displacement at maximum force. Overall, the Shimadzu system ensures compliance with ASTM D6241 and ISO 12236 requirements and offers a dependable solution for quality control, research, and material comparison of geotextiles.¨<h3>3. ICP-MS systems with integrated CRCs range from single quadrupole (SQ) ICP-MS used in environmental and food analysis, to triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) for advanced research applications. For routine applications, Helium Kinetic Energy Discrimination (He KED) mode, commonly referred to as helium mode (He mode), is the most widely used CRC operational mode. The widespread use of He mode is due to its universal effectiveness in reducing a broad range of polyatomic interferences without the need for element-specific optimization.&nbsp;Unlike CRCs that rely on reactive cell gases and require complex tuning (often referred to as reaction cells), He mode effectively mitigates many commonly occurring polyatomic ion interferences without the need for intricate adjustments. In contrast, reaction cells often require careful selection of gas type (such as ammonia or oxygen) and tuning parameters based on the specific interfering ions on analytes of interest.&nbsp;Building on the simplicity of He mode, Agilent has developed Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) for the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ)</a>. AHM represents a breakthrough in interference removal technology, enabled by the newly designed Agilent Dual-Cell System (DCS) and high-speed cell voltage control. These innovations deliver high sensitivity across the mass range and superior interference removal performance for routine applications. Compared to conventional He mode, AHM demonstrates the following improvements:<ul><li>Around a 20-fold sensitivity improvement for low-mass elements, such as beryllium (Be) and boron (B)&nbsp;</li><li>Around a 2-fold improvement for mid-to-high mass elements&nbsp;</li><li>A reduction of more than 33% in data acquisition time while maintaining detection limits (DLs), accelerating analytical measurement times&nbsp;</li></ul>AHM not only replaces traditional He KED but also consolidates multiple tuning modes including no gas, He, and HEHe into a single, streamlined mode. Integrated into the 9500 ICP-QQQ, AHM is a next-generation standard He mode that is faster, simpler, and delivers higher performance than its predecessor. This technical note describes the performance enhancement mechanisms of the DCS and AHM. It also includes some comparative results with conventional He KED mode to highlight the analytical improvements of AHM.<h4>Overview and advantages of AHM&nbsp;</h4>Typically, multi-element ICP-MS methods apply no gas mode to the determination of low-mass elements like Be and B due to low sensitivity in traditional He KED mode. Consequently, many routine ICP-MS applications have required multiple tune setups, combining no gas, He, and HEHe. Each mode switch introduces a delay due to cell pressure stabilization requirements.&nbsp;In practice, low-mass elements (m/z &lt; 23) are generally unaffected by polyatomic ion interferences, so KED is often unnecessary. Therefore, in AHM, different voltages are applied to the DCS (effectively disabling KED) for low-mass elements, while keeping standard settings for elements with m/z ≥ 23.&nbsp;The DCS voltages are dynamically switched in sync with Q2 using a high-speed voltage control circuit, providing over 20× sensitivity improvement for low-mass elements compared to conventional He mode. AHM eliminates the need to run in no gas mode, greatly simplifying the method. As a default approach, AHM alone is suitable for most applications.1<h3>2. Among them, the suspension strut used in the suspension system is an important component that stabilizes the vehicle body by mitigating the impact caused by uneven road surfaces.&nbsp;“JASO C611 Suspension Struts for Automobiles”1), a standard of JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization), established by JSAE, specifies the definition, quality, and test method for suspension struts. There is no international standard that is equivalent to JASO C611.&nbsp;In order to improve the performance of suspension struts, it is necessary to measure the damping force against speed by changing the excitation speed. The performance of suspension struts can be confirmed by measuring the response, such as the relationship between speed and damping force and the Lissajous waveform.&nbsp;This article introduces an example of the test method “Damping Force Characteristic Test” specified in JASO C611, which was conducted on a Shimadzu EMT series electromagnetic fatigue testing machine.<h4>Testing Equipment&nbsp;</h4>The EMT-1kNV-50 electromagnetic dynamic and fatigue testing machine was used in this test. Fig. 1 shows a photograph of the testing machine. The electromagnetic actuator with extremely high frequency response enables highly accurate dynamic testing. In this test, the maximum test speed was 0.6 m/s. The EMT seriesis most suitable for testing at such high frequencies.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>A damping force characteristic test on a suspension strut based on JASO C611 was conducted using an EMT series electromagnetic fatigue testing machine and Windows software for 4830. The test conditions were set using the excitation speed, and it was confirmed that the test was accurately controlled as set. The standard “JASO C611 Suspension Struts for Automobiles” referred to this time is derived from “JASO C602 Automotive Parts - Telescopic Shock Absorbers for Suspension Systems”2). Although C602 also prescribes a damping force characteristic test, it is almost equivalent to the C611, and the test machine configuration can be used by replacing the jig.<h3>3. In semiconductor applications, Ti is widely used as a sputtering target for thin-film deposition, where even trace levels of impurities can negatively affect film uniformity, electrical properties, and device reliability. In aerospace applications, Ti is valued for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, making it an ideal material for engine components and structural parts. However, any impurities can compromise the mechanical integrity and diminish the long-term performance of components, especially when operating under extreme conditions.Ensuring the reliability and functionality of Ti in these demanding environments requires precise quantification of trace impurities in the raw material. Triple quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-QQQ) provides robust suppression of spectral interferences and ultra-low detection limits (DLs), enabling accurate determination of impurities at or below the 1 mg/kg (ppm) level in the solid. This level of sensitivity is particularly important for quality control (QC) of high-purity Ti, where conventional techniques such as XRF, ICP-OES, and GD-MS lack the sensitivity and DLs.&nbsp;For unrivalled interference reduction using reactive cell gases, Agilent ICP-QQQ instruments include two unit mass (1 u) quadrupole mass filters, Q1 and Q2.1 Q1 is positioned before the collision/reaction cell (CRC) to select which ions enter the cell for reaction with the cell gas. Q2 filters ions that exit the cell before they pass to the detector. This tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) operation allows for unmatched control of reaction chemistry in the CRC, making the technique useful for handling intense spectral interferences, including polyatomic, doubly charged ion (M++), isobaric, and peak overlap interferences.&nbsp;Using the newly developed <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> featuring a Dual-Cell System (DCS) CRC and equipped with an optional m-lens, analysts can confidently analyze Ti matrix samples and verify material purity over extended measurement periods. The m-lens is designed with an optimized geometry that minimizes background signals from easily ionized elements that can deposit on interface components during long runs. This feature enables the instrument to maintain high-power, matrix-tolerant plasma conditions while achieving ultralow background equivalent concentrations (BECs), which is critical for ppt-level impurity analysis. Operating the DCS with a suitable cell gas effectively controls spectral interferences from Ti-based species (Ti²+ and TiO+ ) that impact elements like sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). Together with the m‑lens, this approach ensures accurate measurement of trace elemental impurities, enabling compliance within stringent industry standards. The effectiveness of the m‑lens in minimizing background signals and enabling ppt‑level impurity analysis under robust plasma conditions has also been demonstrated in high-matrix applications using ICP‑QQQ.2, 3 In addition to interference control, the 9500 ICP-QQQ system’s robustness and reproducibility make it well suited for routine analysis in both research and production settings. This capability supports the continued advancement of high-tech applications that rely on ultra-clean titanium.In this study, a 200 ppm Ti solution prepared from a high-purity Ti powder was used to represent a typical sample encountered in advanced material analysis. The performance of the 9500 ICP-QQQ for quantifying trace impurities, including Na, Mg, Cu, and Zn, in a high Ti matrix was assessed through spike-recovery experiments and long-term stability tests.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ with m-lens for the ultra-trace analysis of impurity metals in high-purity titanium. By applying optimized reaction gas conditions and mass-shift techniques, spectral interferences from Ti-based species such as Ti²+ and TiO+ were successfully mitigated, enabling accurate quantification of elements like Mg, Cu, and Zn.&nbsp;The method achieved limits of quantification in the sub-ppm range for the undiluted Ti digestion solution and maintained stable ISTD signals over extended measurement periods. Spike recovery tests confirmed high accuracy and reproducibility, with most elements showing recoveries within ±10% and RSDs below 3%.&nbsp;These results confirm that the 9500 ICP-QQQ is a robust and reliable tool for quality control of high-purity Ti, supporting its critical applications in semiconductor and aerospace industries where impurity levels must be strictly controlled.<h3>2. This enables simultaneous, real-time monitoring of multiple CPPs, including nutrient concentrations, metabolic by-products, and cell density. As a result, users gain deep, real-time insights into cellular metabolism and can implement more dynamic, adaptive feeding strategies based on metabolic network understanding.&nbsp;Previous studies have demonstrated the negative impact of high lactate on cell health and quantity and quality of titer produced.² In this study, we demonstrate the successful implementation of process Raman analyzer for simultaneous multi-component feedback control of glucose and lactate in a bioreactor. By continuously monitoring both analytes, the feedback control loop dynamically maintained a constant total carbon concentration (glucose + lactate) at a setpoint of 2 g/L.&nbsp;This advanced carbon-source-based control strategy ensured that cellular metabolic demands were met while promoting lactate consumption toward the end of the run. Fig. 2 shows a photograph of the testing machine. The electromagnetic actuator with extremely high frequency response enables highly accurate dynamic testing. Accurate determination of a wide range of elements is therefore critical for environmental monitoring, oceanographic research, and regulatory compliance. EPA Method 200.8 provides a widely adopted quality control (QC) framework for trace metal analysis in natural waters.3 However, seawater’s high salinity and major components such as Na, Mg, Cl, and S create analytical challenges for conventional ICP-MS analysis, including ionization suppression and polyatomic interferences, such as ArCl+ on As, ArNa+ on Cu, SO2 + on Zn. Overcoming these issues requires advanced interference removal techniques and high sensitivity. Triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) addresses these limitations through its MS/MS configuration.Agilent ICP-MS/MS methods precisely control reaction chemistry and eliminate interferences, ensuring accurate quantification in complex saline matrices.&nbsp;The Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS with its unique Dual-Cell System (DCS) enables accurate, efficient seawater analysis using enhanced collision/reaction cell (CRC) technologies. Its performance is primarily driven by Advanced Helium Mode (AHM). This advanced collision mode delivers exceptional on-mass interference removal using a combination of Kinetic Energy Discrimination (KED) and Collision Induced Dissociation (CID), ensuring precise quantification even in highly saline and complex matrices.4 Additionally, Air cell mode enables fast, effective mass-shift reactions, adding flexibility for overcoming challenging interferences.5 By seamlessly integrating AHM with Air cell mode, the 9500 simplifies workflows and delivers reliable results for trace analysis of multiple elements in seawater.&nbsp;In this study, a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">9500 ICP-QQQ</a> fitted with the AVS MS was used to quantify 26 elements in two seawater certified reference materials (CRMs) and a sample collected in Singapore, employing an online reverse-dilution approach. The method was assessed following the performance requirements of EPA Method 200.8.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Traditional seawater analysis by ICP‑MS often requires extensive sample preparation, such as dilution and matrix separation, to address high salinity and complex matrix effects. These additional steps increase both turnaround time and contamination risk. The method developed here enables direct seawater analysis using an online reverse-dilution approach, eliminating manual preparation and enabling rapid, high-throughput processing. The confectionery industry uses it to create products with a certain consistency, like pie fillings. It is also used in a process known as starch molding where shapes are pressed into a corn starch bed for gummy candies and similar treats. Corn starch also acts as a desiccant during the candies' drying process before reuse. Therefore, the corn starch moisture content is a very important factor to consider in this process.&nbsp;Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a fast, chemicalfree analysis technique for the determination of moisture content and corn protein content in corn starch. The NIRS solution is easy to use and can be used either atline or in a quality control laboratory.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>210 samples of corn starch were measured with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=OMNIS+NIR">OMNIS NIR Analyzer Solid</a> (Figure 1). All measurements were performed in reflection mode (1000–2250 nm) using a large holder and large cup (Table 1). OMNIS Software was used for all data acquisition and prediction model development. Karl Fischer titration was used to determine the water content in corn starch, and the Kjeldahl method was used to determine its protein content.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note shows the feasibility of using near-infrared spectroscopy for the determination of moisture and protein content in corn starch. Compared to the conventional analysis techniques used to determine these quality parameters, NIRS saves a considerable amount of time and costs. With NIR spectroscopy, analyses can be conducted without using any chemical reagents, giving users reliable results in seconds.<h3>3. In fatigue failure, cracks initiate from microdefects in the material, internal voids, inclusions, and other features, and then propagate under repeated loading until final fracture occurs. To evaluate this sequence of processes, it is effective to observe defects and crack propagation nondestructively.&nbsp;Traditionally, crack observation has focused on visual inspection and microscopic observation, but these methods are limited to information near the surface. To sufficiently capture the threedimensional shape and changes in cracks propagating inside a material, observation of the fractured specimen after failure has generally been used. In contrast, X-ray CT can nondestructively visualize internal defects and cracks in three dimensions, making it possible to evaluate in detail changes in crack morphology, including in the interior.&nbsp;Accordingly, using the “Air-Servo Microfocus X-Ray CT System,” which combines X-ray CT with a fatigue testing machine, repeated tests were performed in which loading was stopped at fixed cycle intervals and imaging was carried out. This article introduces the resulting process of crack initiation and propagation in the same specimen.<h4>Conclusion</h4>Using the Air-Servo Microfocus X-Ray CT System, cracks propagating from the notch region of an aluminum alloy specimen were observed. First, static tests and fatigue tests were performed using the servo pulser EHF-LV, and a S-N diagram was obtained. Based on the obtained S-N diagram, the fatigue test conditions for the Air-Servo Microfocus X-Ray CT System were determined, and X-ray CT imaging was performed. The process of crack propagation according to the number of cycles was observed in cross-sectional images and 3D images. In addition, by visualizing the displacement from a specific cycle onward, it was also confirmed that the specimen necked down just before fracture.&nbsp;Using the measurement system introduced in this article, it is possible to observe changes in specimen shape over time while the specimen remains mounted in the jig. Therefore, not only the crack propagation process of a specimen during fatigue testing, but also material deformation behavior and the process of shape change can be observed.<h3>4. The basic elements of XRF spectrometer systems include a radiation source, a sample, and an X-ray detector. The analysis relies on the interaction of radiation source output (an X-ray source) with a sample, in this case, the cup of ionic salt material, such as Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide or other chemicals and salts. The XRF system can characterize materials, due to the fundamental principle that each element has a unique atomic structure, which in turn has a unique set of peaks (x-ray lines) in its emission spectrum. The energy dispersive X-ray detector separates (disperses) the detected radiation emitted from the sample by energy, thus providing a spectrum from which the different elements present in the sample can be identified and/ or quantified.<h4>Algorithm&nbsp;</h4>Handheld XRF devices often cannot detect elements lighter than Magnesium by their fluorescence lines, however many compounds contain elements of interest such as Oxygen and Hydrogen. Additionally, relying solely on primary fluorescence peaks to identify target compounds can lead to misinterpretation. For instance, if MgO and NaCl are present in a 1:1 mixture, the resulting XRF spectrum would display distinct characteristic Mg and Cl peaks. However, the sample would not actually be the spectrum of MgCl₂, as the analytical response of Mg and Cl would be very different in both samples because of a dilution effect and absorption from Na and O atoms. The XRF process can easily differentiate samples with similar elemental constituents but with different chemical structures by analyzing the resulting scatter from the sample and comparing the full spectrum to a calibration library of compounds. Figure 4 shows XRF spectra of Sodium Chlorate (NaClO₃) and Sodium Perchlorate (NaClO₄) taken with the IonicX XRF instrument. In this example, only the Cl fluorescence peak can be detected by the IonicX device as Na and O fluorescence X-rays have energies that are too weak to be detected. However, when the spectrum is normalized, in this case to the primary Compton peak of Ag Kα, a slight but distinguishable difference can be seen in the spectral intensity between the energies of 25 keV and 40 keV. The difference in the scatter of the X-ray tube Bremsstrahlung is caused by differences in mass absorption coefficients of the presented samples, in this case it is the extra O atom in the NaClO₄ molecule vs the NaClO₃ molecule.<h4>Summary&nbsp;</h4>The IonicX Portable XRF Analyzer is a powerful addition for the verification of ionic salt type chemicals, utilizing XRF technology in a versatile, easy to use, small form factor. IonicX provides clear, easy to understand, unambiguous results and tools to assist with compliance and data integrity. IonicX is a robust verification tool which allows pharmaceutical companies to more efficiently verify incoming chemicals that typically have been tested using lengthy wet-chemistry techniques.
