1. Agilent Technologies: Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS Software Version 1.1

For the Agilent 7800, 7850 & 7900 ICP-MS and 8900 & 9500 ICP-QQQ systems

Agilent OpenLab ICP‑MS software 1.1 is the most recent version of the straightforward, user-friendly, and robust ICP‑MS workstation software. It replaces ICP‑MS MassHunter, the longstanding core software platform for Agilent ICP‑MS systems.

Major features in version 1.1 include a new dashboard to facilitate daily instrument operation, guided diagnostic tools to help users troubleshoot instrument issues, Method Advisor for element-focused method development, and the IntelliQuant Star Rating for easier data review, along with enhancements to IntelliQuant’s semiquantitative features.

Additionally, this version supports the new Agilent 9500 ICP‑QQQ system. When using the 9500, batches created for Agilent single quadrupole ICP‑MS instruments can be converted for the 9500 via the Batch Conversion Tool in OpenLab ICP-MS. OpenLab ICP-MS 1.1 comes with all new instruments and is compatible with Microsoft Windows 11 (64-bit). Existing Agilent ICP-MS instruments can be upgraded to version 1.1 with or without the Agilent-supplied PC bundle1 .

Hardware compatibility

OpenLab ICP-MS 1.1 is compatible with the currently supported instrument hardware, as follows:

Variant number / instrument model

Features of OpenLab ICP-MS 1.1

Dashboard

OpenLab ICP-MS 1.1 features a new dashboard that offers a quick overview of instrument status and system health. Its user-friendly layout combines essential information, including instrument configuration, maintenance status (Early Maintenance Feedback), and troubleshooting access, allowing users to quickly evaluate the system's current condition during daily use.

Instrument Hub and Diagnostics

The Dashboard features an Instrument Hub, shown as a dedicated pane. This hub consolidates health monitoring, maintenance, and diagnostic functions to ensure consistent instrument performance.

If a problem occurs, a notification appears in this pane. You can click on the notification to see detailed information or start Diagnostics, a new guided troubleshooting tool. Diagnostics helps identify potential causes of any problems using software, offering step-by-step guidance with images and videos. This design allows users to troubleshoot issues easily, even without prior specialist experience.

Method Advisor and import for 9500 ICP-QQQ

Method Advisor is an element-centric method creation tool designed specifically for the 9500 ICP-QQQ. By choosing the elements to measure, users get automatic application of recommended method conditions, drawing from Agilent’s over ten years of experience in triple quadrupole ICP-MS. This simplifies the process of developing methods for ICP-QQQ analysis. To create a batch with Method Advisor, simply select the target elements, input calibration data, and prepare a sample list. The tool then automatically sets key parameters—such as cell gas modes and acquisition masses—optimizing the 9500’s performance. This makes reliable method development accessible even for analysts who are new to ICP-QQQ or the OpenLab ICP-MS software.

Methods from Agilent single quadrupole ICP-MS instruments can be imported using the method import tool. This tool converts the ICP-MS method into a format compatible with the 9500 ICP-QQQ. Users simply select the base batch file and choose whether to import the method directly or optimize it for the 9500. The tool then determines the optimal conditions and fine-tunes the instrument settings accordingly.

Target element selection can also be performed using a CSV file. This allows methods from non‑Agilent instruments to be transitioned efficiently by importing a list of target elements into Method Advisor.

Software compatibility

Version 1.1 of the OpenLab ICP-MS software is compatible with:

  • Agilent 7800, 7850, and 7900 ICP-MS and 8900 and 9500 ICP-QQQ and their associated peripherals
  • Third-party autosamplers and accessories, using plug-ins developed by the supplier
  • Agilent 7890 & 8890 GC and 7693 autosampler when the optional chromatographic software module is installed
  • Most Agilent 1100 and 1200 Series HPLC modules and peripherals when the optional chromatographic module is installed

2. LECO: Titanium Alloy Analysis by Glow Discharge Spectroscopy

Titanium alloys play a critical role in today's high-tech world, offering an exceptional combination of strength-toweight ratio, corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength retention, and biocompatibility. To achieve these properties, titanium is commonly alloyed with elements such as aluminum, tin, vanadium, zirconium, molybdenum, niobium, and iron. Because alloy composition directly affects material performance and compliance with product specifications, accurate elemental analysis is essential for quality assurance. As researchers continue to investigate new titanium alloy formulations, analytical techniques such as glow discharge spectroscopy (GDS) provide a fast and effective means of determining elemental composition.

Titanium alloys are used extensively across a wide range of industries. Aerospace and defense applications account for the largest share of titanium consumption, while medical and biomedical fields utilize titanium for artificial joints, implants, and surgical instruments. The chemical processing industry relies on titanium alloys for heat exchangers and desalination equipment due to their outstanding corrosion resistance. Titanium also finds application in premium consumer products, including bicycles, golf clubs, and luxury watches.

LECO's GDS900 is an atomic emission spectrometer designed for the elemental analysis of solid conductive materials. The instrument determines elemental composition by measuring the characteristic light emitted from a sample when its atoms are excited. At the heart of the system is a glow discharge source that uniformly sputters material from the sample surface, offering advantages over many other excitation techniques. Because excitation occurs within the glow discharge plasma and is spatially separated from the sample surface, the influence of the sample's metallurgical and chemical history is significantly reduced.Glow discharge spectra are dominated by neutral atomic emission lines, resulting in relatively simple spectra with minimal spectral interferences. Although singly ionized transitions are also observed, glow discharge spectra remain considerably less complex than those produced by many other atomic emission techniques. In addition, the response of a typical glow discharge analytical line is highly linear across a broad concentration range, reducing the number of wavelengths required for accurate quantitative analysis.

The GDS900 delivers state-of-the-art technology specifically engineered for routine elemental determination in both ferrous and nonferrous materials. LECO's exclusive CCDbased optical design provides the measurement stability, flexibility, and analytical performance required for demanding production and quality-control environments.

3. Metrohm: Automated quality control of gasoline using NIR spectroscopy

Rapid determination of AKI, RON, MON, density, oxygenates, benzene, olefins, and aromatic content in gasoline

Determining the key quality parameters of gasoline, namely research octane number (RON), motor octane number (MON), anti-knock index (AKI), oxygenates, benzene, olefins, and aromatic content, conventionally requires several laborious analytical methods which need trained personnel. This Application Note demonstrates that the OMNIS NIR Analyzer Liquid, operating in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, provides a cost-efficient, fast solution for the multiparameter analysis of gasoline. Its precise temperature control ensures that all samples are measured in compliance with ASTM D8340, ASTM D8321, and ASTM D6122. The system offers fully automated operation when combined with the OMNIS Sample Robot M – NIR.

EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT

Gasoline fuel samples were measured with an OMNIS NIR Analyzer Liquid (Figure 1) in transmission mode (1000–2250 nm) at 30 °C. The OMNIS Sample Robot M – NIR was used for fully automated sample measurement with disposable vials (8 mm pathlength). The vials are closed, reducing the flammability risk for fuel samples to an absolute minimum. All data acquisition and prediction model development was performed with OMNIS Software.

CONCLUSION

This Application Note shows the feasibility of using NIR spectroscopy for gasoline quality testing. Compared to wet chemical methods, the time to result is a major advantage of NIRS. Each measurement is performed in a few seconds, and all parameters are measured simultaneously. The possibility of fully automated analysis in combination with the OMNIS Sample Robot M – NIR increases throughput, maximizing gasoline quality control efficiency. With the OMNIS gasoline pre-calibration (6.06008.008), users can measure all the mentioned parameters from day one.

4. Shimadzu: Extractable and Leachable Study of Pharmaceutical Packaging Material used to Store Penicillin-V Using ICPMS-2050

User benefits
  • Simultaneous qualitative scanning feature benefits to user in identification of non-targeted elements, supporting the creation of a comprehensive extractable profile.
  • Proprietary Mini-Torch technology enables stable plasma with highersensitivity and lower gas consumption (11 L/min).
  • LabSolutions ICPMS ensures compliance with regulatory norms in spectroscopy products, streamlining data management.

Extractable and leachable (E & L) studies are becoming increasingly important in the pharmaceutical industry as it is a mandatory requirement from the FDA during filing of the drug product. The purpose of E & L studies is to identify and evaluate possible toxicological risks. In this, the regulatory references aim to identify traces of potential chemical substances. These substances may be harmful to patients due to their toxicity or may impact the activity of the drug product. Hence, to ensure the safety and efficacy of the drug throughout its shelf-life, E & L studies play an important role.

What are Extractables and Leachables?

  • Extractables are organic and inorganic chemical entities that are released from a pharmaceutical packaging/delivery system, packaging component, or packaging material of construction into an extraction solvent under laboratory conditions[1] .
  • Leachables are foreign organic and inorganic chemical entities that are present in a packaged drug product because they have leached into the packaged drug product from a packaging/delivery system, packaging component, or packaging material of construction under normal conditions of storage and use or during accelerated drug product stability studies[1].

Analytical Conditions

Conclusion

  • A Shimadzu ICPMS-2050 spectrometer was utilized to evaluate elemental impurities leached from a Container Closure Pack (CCP) under various acidified extraction environments. To simulate accelerated leaching, extraction was performed at elevated temperatures. Initial qualitative screening revealed the presence of several key analytes specifically aluminum, boron, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, and silicon which showed a significant response relative to the diluent.
  • This study shows that the ICPMS-2050 is sensitive enough to identify and quantify extractables at the permissible limits set by ICH Q3D targeted as well as non targeted elements by using Scan mode feature.
