Agilent Technologies: High Precision Analysis of Major Components in Precious Metals by ICP-OES</h3>Determination of major components in jewelry alloys by ICP-OES and standard bracketing per ISO methods<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_precious_metals_standard_bracketing_5800_icp_oes_5994_8849en_agilent_5260c9c8be.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Accurate quantification of major components in precious metal alloys can be challenging due to high precision and accuracy requirements, often to stringent industry-specific standards. This challenge is particularly relevant for the precious metals industry, where the stoichiometric composition and purity of metal alloys define both product quality and commercial value. A technique for high-precision measurements developed specifically for the precious metals industry is standard bracketing. As described in ISO methods 11494 and 11495 for ICP-OES analysis,1,2 this technique employs standard–sample–standard sequencing, which improves control over instrumental fluctuations and matrix effects, ensuring high levels of accuracy and precision.Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) is a powerful technique that is often used to analyze trace impurities in a broad range of samples. Both the Agilent 5800 and 5900 ICP-OES instruments are inherently precise, as discussed elsewhere.3 However, precision is further improved when the instruments are operated with the ISO-compliant standard bracketing feature within the Agilent ICP Expert Pro software version 7.8 onwards. The software provides additional useful features for jewelry assaying, catalyst refining, and material recycling. These functions include built-in automated result summarization, reporting in fineness (‰), karat (k), or concentration units, and processing tools specifically for determining major components and purity analysis. Standard bracketing is also applicable to other demanding applications, such as semiconductors, fertilizers, and the emerging battery materials sector.&nbsp;In this study, the Agilent 5800 Vertical Dual View (VDV) ICP-OES with Agilent SPS 4 autosampler and ICP Expert 7.8 Pro software4 was used to determine the purity of gold (Au), palladium (Pd), and platinum (Pt) in three precious metal alloys. The analytical procedure was in accordance with ISO methods 11494 and 11495.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=5800+VDV+ICP-OES">Agilent 5800 VDV ICP-OES</a> was configured with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=SPS+4+autosampler">Agilent SPS 4 autosampler</a>, which provided automated sample delivery to the instrument (Figure 1). The 5800 ICP-OES was equipped with a SeaSpray nebulizer, double-pass cyclonic spray chamber, and Agilent one-piece VDV torch with a 1.8 mm internal diameter (id) injector. All components were controlled by Agilent ICP Expert Pro* 7.8 software. Instrument operating parameters are listed in Table 1.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This application demonstrates the effectiveness of highprecision standard bracketing calibration for the quantification of major components in gold, palladium, and platinum alloys using the Agilent 5800 VDV ICP-OES.&nbsp;By employing gravimetrically prepared standards and integrating internal standard correction, the method improves analytical precision (RSD) more than threefold compared to conventional external calibration. It also reduces sample-tosample fluctuations, resulting in a 400× improvement in RPD values between duplicate measurements.&nbsp;The high precision and reproducibility of the standard bracketing method enable accurate assaying of precious‑metal samples, making it ideal for quality control of high‑value materials where composition control is often required within ±0.1%.&nbsp;The latest version of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=+ICP+Expert+Pro+software">Agilent ICP Expert Pro software</a> facilitates the standard bracketing method and includes tools for in-worksheet calculations and custom result displays. This approach simplifies metal-alloy purity testing, enables direct interpretation of sample purity in industry-standard terms, and provides confident, traceable quantification in accordance with ISO methods.&nbsp;The method is useful in other applications that require tight composition control, such as battery materials, catalysts, semiconductors, and fertilizers.<h3>2. Metrohm: Biodiesel content in diesel with nearinfrared spectroscopy</h3>Monitor the fuel blending process within seconds<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_126_download_800056c376.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>The properties of biodiesel fuel, which is produced from vegetable oils or animal fat, are very similar to petroleum-derived diesel, but biodiesel pollutes less. In most countries the common biodiesel blend is B20, which ranges from 6% to 20% biodiesel content. Measuring the biodiesel content in diesel is important, as higher levels can cause deposits in older diesel engines, clogging the fuel filters and pumps. Fuels with high levels of biodiesel also tend to absorb more moisture compared to petroleum-derived fuels. With near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), the biodiesel content is determined in seconds without any sample preparation. Compared to other test methods like those used in ASTM D7467, biodiesel content analysis with NIR spectroscopy saves time and enables the implementation of online process monitoring with fiber optics.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>Twenty-one diesel samples with varying biodiesel content from 0% to 20% were measured on the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=OMNIS+NIR">OMNIS NIR Analyzer</a> Liquid (Figure 1) in transmission mode (1000–2250 nm) using 8 mm disposable vials. The vial temperature was set and monitored at 30 °C with the built-in vial sensor to ensure consistent measurement performance. OMNIS Software was used for all data acquisition and prediction model development.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note shows the results of a biodiesel content analysis test without the need for any sample preparation, using near-infrared spectroscopy in place of other more time-intensive analytical techniques. This ultimately leads to a reduction in workload and the related costs. Alongside the biodiesel content test, additional fuel quality parameters like cetane number, moisture, or flash point can be determined with NIRS.<h3>3. Although colorimetric methods have been used for these analyses, there is a growing need for trace control due to tighter regulations in recent years, leading to a consideration of a shift to instrumental methods that enable quantification. Candidates for instrumental methods include ICP optical emission spectrometry/mass spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. While the former method is highly sensitive, powder and solid samples need to be dissolved in an acid such as nitric acid or hydrochloric acid. In contrast, X-ray fluorescence analysis is convenient because it can be analyzed without dissolving the sample.&nbsp;This application news introduces the analysis of two inorganic oxide powders (talc and titanium oxide) using the energydispersive <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ALTRACE">X-ray fluorescence Spectrometer ALTRACE</a> (Fig. 1).<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This application news reports on the quantitative analysis of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) in two types of inorganic oxide powders: talc and titanium oxide. The analysis was performed using the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer ALTRACE, which allows for the analysis of powders without dissolving them. ALTRACE enables simultaneous analysis of Pb and As, unlike traditional colorimetric methods that test them separately. XPS is unique in that it can quantify the elemental and chemical composition of a material’s surface with extreme selectivity, since the typical information depth of XPS being less than 10 nanometers.&nbsp;Raman spectroscopy is utilized in many similar application areas as it requires little sample preparation, is nondestructive, provides information on molecular structure, and enables users to identify materials quickly, thanks to extensive spectral libraries.&nbsp;The implementation of XPS and Raman with other analysis techniques is well established; XPS has a long history of complementary use with related ultra-high vacuum (UHV) analysis techniques, such as UV photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and ion scattering spectroscopy. In these cases, additional equipment is added to the spectrometer to give coincident, complementary information.To overcome these problems, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=3&amp;search=ARXPS">Thermo Scientific™ Theta Probe Angle-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (ARXPS) System</a> has been integrated with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2238">Thermo Scientific iXR™ DXR3 Flex Raman Spectrometer</a> to provide a multimodal analysis platform. The system aligns the XPS analysis position exactly with the Raman analysis position, ensuring that the data is collected from the same position.&nbsp;The coincident XPS-Raman removes any requirement to transfer the sample from one instrument to the next between analyses, minimizing additional sample handling and exposure to different conditions that can lead to sample contamination or degradation.<h4>Summary&nbsp;</h4>In conclusion, XPS is used for quantitative determination of both elemental and chemical composition for any solid material compatible with UHV analysis, whereas Raman spectroscopy is used for identification of referenced compounds by careful spectral matching that searches algorithms and spectral databases. The combination of XPS and Raman spectroscopy on the DXR3 Flex Raman Spectrometer integrated with the Theta Probe ARXPS System, allows more powerful analysis of a material than either technique in isolation, with the cleanliness, purity and stoichiometry of a sample determined using XPS, and identification and quantification of molecular structures determined using Raman spectroscopy. As both techniques are aligned to the same position within the vacuum system, all the time-consuming aspects of locating the same analysis point when transferring between instruments is removed, giving absolutely certainty that all the information acquired has come from the same region of sample, which is particularly useful when studying nonuniform samples.

Because black pepper is most often sold in ground, crushed, or mixed forms, its supply chain is difficult to monitor and manage. Also, consumer campaigns against deforestation and the European Union Regulation on Deforestation-free (EUDR) products have increased calls for greater sourcing transparency. Products with a known geographical indication can demand a higher price. Companies do not want to become implicated in false claims about the sourcing of products, and many are keen to have full visibility of their products’ origin. To address this need, the European Commission has established the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) system to protect regional specific products, thereby promoting their unique characteristics based on geographical origin and traditional competence of production. The PGI scheme has increased the demand for detailed information regarding the geographical source of food products, a trend that is likely to continue as EUDR is implemented across the EU and associated markets. Verifying the geographical origin of black pepper using elemental fingerprints is highly relevant to protecting value chain stakeholders, ensuring both quality and traceability while upholding the principles of food integrity.&nbsp;Several analytical methods can be used for profiling certain elements in foods. However, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is unique because of its rapid throughput, multi-element capability, ultratrace sensitivity, isotopic analysis, versatility across sample types, low sample volume requirements, compliance with regulatory requirements, and low cost.3&nbsp;The Agilent 7850 ICP-MS is equipped with an Octopole Reaction System (ORS4 ), a collision/reaction cell (CRC) that uses helium (He) gas and Kinetic Energy Discrimination (KED) to remove polyatomic interferences on key analytes.4 If left unchecked, these interferences can affect data accuracy in complex food products. The integration of the 7850 with Agilent ICP-MS MassHunter software streamlines data analysis. When integrated with chemometric analysis, ICP-MS demonstrates high precision in multi-elemental profiling of diverse food matrices, effectively distinguishing their geographical origin.5&nbsp;In this study, 150 black pepper samples from five countries (Brazil, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam) were analyzed using the 7850 ICP-MS to obtain elemental fingerprints of the samples. Agilent Mass Profiler Professional (MPP) software was used to process the ICP-MS elemental data and to construct chemometric models for distinguishing the geographical origin of the samples, as adapted from Chilaka et al.5<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>An <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=7850+ICP-MS">Agilent 7850 single-quadrupole ICP-MS</a> was used for the analysis of 38 elements in the black pepper samples. Sample introduction was performed via a peristaltic pump connected to an Agilent MicroMist nebulizer and an Agilent SPS 4 autosampler. All elements were measured using helium collision (He KED) mode, except for boron (B), which was analyzed in no gas mode. Instrument control was performed using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=MassHunter">Agilent ICP-MS MassHunter 5.1 software</a>, and data processing was conducted using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=Mass+Profiler+Professional+software">Agilent MPP software</a>, version 15.1. Instrument operating conditions as shown in Table 1.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This study investigated the potential of ICP-MS elemental profiling coupled with chemometric analysis for geographical origin discrimination of black pepper samples from five countries, including Brazil, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. A total of 38 elements was measured in 150 black pepper samples using the Agilent 7850 ICP-MS. Chemometric analysis was performed on the ICP-MS elemental data using Agilent Mass Profiler Professional (MPP) software. The PCA analysis exhibited satisfactory reliability and classification rates and demonstrated potential for the authentication of the geographical origin of black pepper. However, the separation of the Cambodian and Vietnamese samples was less distinct than the other groups, revealing potential similarities in elemental profiling between the bordering countries, which share similar climatic, geological, and agricultural conditions. Using LDA and RF classification models on the black pepper test set, we achieved a high overall accuracy in determining the geographical origin of the samples. These findings provide empirical support for the combined use of elementomics and chemometric techniques in black pepper authentication, contributing to fraud prevention. The study also demonstrates the potential of the method for application to other food types.<h3>2. Metrohm: Milk powder analysis by near-infrared spectroscopy</h3>Determination of moisture, fat, lactose, and protein content<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_128_download_867321cfb0.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>For milk powder producers, final product control is essential to meet strict regulatory standards, guarantee comprehensive quality assurance, ensure consistent nutritional quality, and extend shelf life. These are all especially important for infant formula and dairy ingredients used in sensitive applications. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a fast, reagentfree method for measuring key quality parameters such as moisture, protein, lactose, and fat content directly in milk powder. The NIRS solution requires no sample preparation, enabling real-time monitoring either in the lab or directly on the production line. This allows producers to react quickly to process variations, minimize waste, and maintain product integrity batch after batch.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>More than 600 samples of powdered milk from different suppliers were analyzed on an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=56&amp;search=OMNIS+NIR">OMNIS NIR Analyzer</a> (Figure 1). The different milk powders were placed into an OMNIS sample cup and analyzed in diffuse reflection mode. To include sample variety, the sample rotated during measurement to collect spectra from different locations. The automatically averaged spectra were used for model development. Reference values were obtained by official methods, e.g., AOAC 927.05 (moisture), AOAC 939.02 (protein), and AOAC 932.06 (fat). For the lactose content determination, a phenol-sulfuric acid method was used.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note presented the analysis of milk powder using NIR spectroscopy. Models for several quality parameters (fat, protein, lactose, and moisture content) were created. Independent validation samples confirmed the robustness and reliability of the models, with high correlation coefficients and low prediction errors achieved across all parameters. Notably, the dataset included samples from diverse global origins, capturing a broad range of product variability. This study shows that NIRS can be successfully integrated into the quality control workflow for dairy powder analysis.<h3>3. In such configurations—where many cells are connected in series—the state of charge of individual cells varies, as shown in Figure 1. Moreover, because the cells are densely packed to reduce volume, the ambient temperature experienced by each cell also varies. In this application, we conducted cycle tests under overcharged or high-temperature conditions, disassembled the degraded pouch cells, and analyzed both the electrolytes and the electrodes.<h4>Analysis of electrolyte and electrode</h4>Electrolytes and electrodes were extracted from the batteries degraded through the cycle tests (hereafter referred to as “degraded cells”) and analyzed using the instruments shown in Figures 3–5. It is known that electrolytesin degraded cells contain transition metals (Ni, Co, Mn) dissolved from the cathode active material1). In addition, electrolyte solvents are known to generate characteristic degradation products as deterioration progresses2). By analyzing these degradation-related elements and compounds, the degradation state of the battery can be assessed. In this article, we propose a multifaceted evaluation of electrolytes using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=ICPE-9820">ICP-AES</a> and GC-MS. On both the cathode and anode, insulating layers known as CEI/SEI form on the electrode surfaces. Under improper charging conditions, excessive formation of these layers can lead to capacity loss. Furthermore, the dissolved metals from the cathode deposit and precipitate on the anode. These deposits can cause internal short circuits, posing risks such as fire hazards. While such electrode conditions are typically evaluated by ICP-AES or XPS to examine elemental content or surface chemical states, this article introduces a simpler evaluation method using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=EDX-8100">EDXRF</a>.<h4>Summary</h4>Analysis of the electrolytesfrom degraded batteries using ICP-AES and GC-MS revealed dissolution of transition metals as well as the formation of degradation products. Furthermore, EDXRF analysis of the electrodes enabled straightforward detection of changesin elemental composition, including transition metals, fluorine, and phosphorus. These analytical techniques allow for a multifaceted evaluation of battery degradation. In real-world battery operation, fluctuations in charging conditions and ambient temperature introduce variability in degradation states. By assessing degradation mechanisms individually, as demonstrated in thisreport, it is possible to obtain insights that contribute not only to improving intrinsic battery performance but also to optimizing implementation methods and control conditions.<h3>4. Their appeal lies in a combination of shock resistance, chemical stability against basic slags, and an expansion behavior that mitigates cracking. Depending on the duty, they are used as bricks, castables, or gunned repairs, sometimes with engineered microstructures that blend spinel with periclase, corundum, or zirconia to tune creep, corrosion, and spalling performance.&nbsp;X-ray diffraction (XRD) underpins manufacturing control from raw mix to fired product. During synthesis, XRD tracks the solid-state reaction of MgO and Al₂O₃ into spinel, verifying the disappearance of periclase and alumina and quantifying the spinel fraction by Rietveld analysis. It is renowned for its vibrant color and distinctive flavor—attributes that contribute significantly to its culinary appeal. However, saffron's high market value and limited production make it vulnerable to adulteration, quality degradation, and mislabeling, all of which pose a risk to consumer health, safety, and trust.&nbsp;Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy is a rapid, reliable analytical technique suitable for assessing spice quality by quantifying bioactive molecular markers. In saffron, crocin is the carotenoid compound responsible for color intensity, picrocrocin is the primary bittering agent, and safranal is the key contributor to aroma.&nbsp;In this application note, we used an Agilent Cary 3500 UV-Vis spectrophotometer and Agilent Cary UV Workstation software to analyze a commercial saffron sample. The aim of the study was to grade the quality of the sample in accordance with ISO 3632-1:2025 and ISO 3632-2:2010 Spices — Saffron (Crocus&nbsp;sativus L.).1,2 These well-established industry standards provide specifications and test methods for the analysis of dried saffron, including filaments, cut filaments, and powder. The standardized test methods outlined in ISO&nbsp;3632-2 support the classification and quality evaluation of saffron. The methods relate to the determination of moisture and volatile matter content (clause 7), crushing and sieving of samples for tests (clause 10), and the determination of the main characteristics using a UV-Vis spectrometric method (clause 14). Based on these evaluations and the quality criteria defined in ISO 3632-1:2025, saffron samples can be categorized into four commercial grades: Extra Class (EC), I, II, and III, with EC indicating the highest quality. &nbsp;<h4>Experimental</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>The blank cuvette and aqueous extract of sample cuvette were loaded in the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Cary+3500+UV-Vis">Agilent Cary 3500 Multicell UV-Vis</a> (Figure&nbsp;1), which was operated using the parameters listed in Table 1. The instrument is powered by a xenon flash lamp that requires no warmup time and enables a full spectrum scan to be collected in under a second. The lamp includes a 10-year replacement warranty, minimizing the frequency and cost of replacement. The Cary 3500's modular design approach enables the spectrophotometer series to be configured towards varying sampling flexibility and scalability needs. For single sample applications and laboratories with reduced bench-space, the Cary 3500 Compact UV-Vis allows a user to measure a single sample and reference in ambient or temperature-controlled configuration. This application can also be conducted on the Cary 3500 Flexible UV-Vis, which has a larger-sized compartment for liquid and solid sample measurements, and for use with accessories.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The Agilent Cary 3500 Multicell UV-Vis spectrophotometer combined with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Cary+UV+Workstation">Agilent Cary UV Workstation software</a> provided precise quantification of color, taste, and aroma through the measurement of crocin, picrocrocin, and safranal compounds, respectively. The method supports the quality assessment of saffron in accordance with the ISO 3632 industry standard, enabling reliable grading of commercial samples while also flagging potential cases of adulteration, degradation, or mislabeling.&nbsp;The Cary 3500 UV-Vis uses a reliable, long-lasting xenon flash lamp that requires no warmup time, allowing immediate operation and acquisition of full spectral scans for blank and saffron samples in under a second. These capabilities support high-throughput analysis of spices through the precise measurement of compound-specific absorbance&nbsp;peaks.&nbsp;Using built-in spectral tools, automated calculations, and clear reporting features, the Cary UV Workstation significantly simplified the sampling-to-reporting workflow for saffron analysis. Customized calculations defined in ISO 3632 accelerate data processing and reduce calculation errors. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the foundations for successful livestock production are the availability of animal feed and efficient feeding. Quality control (QC) of feed and feed ingredients is crucial to ensure the production of safe and nutrient-rich animal feed. Typical QC parameters measured during the production of feed are fat, moisture, protein, fiber, ash, and starch. However, analyzing these parameters is usually done with wet chemistry, requiring different time-consuming procedures, complex analysis methods, and costly chemical reagents. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers rapid and reliable prediction of fat, moisture, protein, fiber, ash, and starch content of different feed types in a few seconds without any sample preparation.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT</h4>Around 500 samples of feed (e.g., for poultry, swine, cattle, goats, and sheep) were analyzed on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=56&amp;search=OMNIS+NIR">Metrohm NIR Analyzer</a>. All measurements were performed in reflection mode using the large cup. The samples were measured in rotation to collect spectral data from several areas. Spectral averaging of signals from various spots helped to reduce influences from sample inhomogeneity. Metrohm software was used for all data acquisition and prediction model development.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note demonstrates the feasibility to determine multiple key quality parameters of feed with NIRS analysis. Several analytical methods are usually required to measure starch, ash, fiber, protein, moisture, and fat in animal feed (Table 4). Even minimal contamination on the semiconductor surface can impact product quality and yield, making it crucial to effectively remove dirt and impurities during cleaning. For this reason, the purity of the cleaning water used in these cleaning processesis extremely important. The recent trend towards ever-smaller, higher-capacity semiconductors means that ultra-pure cleaning water, thoroughly free of organic and other impurities, has become essential.Typically, ultra-pure water is produced by first purifying tap or groundwater to produce pure water, and then further refining it into ultra-pure water. Impurities in water include organic and inorganic substances, particles, as well as microorganisms. Various methods, such as activated carbon filters, reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, ultraviolet lamps, and ion exchange resins, are used in combination to purify water into ultra-pure water.&nbsp;Maintaining the quality of ultra-pure water used for semiconductor cleaning is critical. The online TOC analyzer for ultra-pure water, TOC-1000e S (Fig. 1), enables highly sensitive TOC measurement with a detection limit of 0.02 μg/L using UV oxidation and conductivity measurement methods. This application presents the features and functions of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=TOC1000e+S">TOC1000e S</a>, along with examples of online measurements of ultrapure water.<h4>Features of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=TOC1000e+S">TOC-1000e S&nbsp;</a></h4>The TOC-1000e S is an ultra-compact device that can be installed on a tabletop, wall, or pole mount. The front panel features a large color touch panel that is highly visible even in dark environments, enabling easy operation. An excimer lamp (mercury-free) that emits high-energy ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 172 nm is used as the light source for the oxidation section. To ensure the oxidation of organic compounds, TOC-1000e S uses a unique structure called Active-Path, which integrates the excimer lamp and the sample flow channel. In a typical ultraviolet irradiation section, an air gap between the lamp and the sample flow channel results in inefficient ultraviolet light transmission and the generation of ozone within the device. However, in Active-Path, a sample flow path within the light-emitting part enables efficient irradiation of the sample with ultraviolet light while preventing ozone generation (Fig. 2).<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>TOC-1000e S enables the monitoring of TOC of ultra-pure water used in semiconductor manufacturing. As a high‑demand commodity produced from dried capsicum pods, paprika is subject to quality variation and adulteration, which can compromise product authenticity, consumer trust, and regulatory compliance. UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy is a rapid, reproducible analytical technique for evaluating paprika quality by quantifying pigment concentration. In paprika, color intensity primarily arises from carotenoid compounds, and is commonly assessed using the ASTA Method 20.11 – a well-established industry standard that commercially grades paprika samples as a numerical ASTA color value.In this application note, we used an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Cary+3500">Agilent Cary 3500 Multicell UV-Vis spectrophotometer</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=UV+Workstation+software">Agilent Cary UV Workstation software</a> to determine the ASTA color value of two commercial paprika samples. The measurements were performed in accordance with ASTA Method 20.1 for the determination of extractable color in capsicums and their&nbsp;oleoresins.<h4>Results and discussion</h4><h5>Paprika samples' analysis&nbsp;</h5>ASTA Method 20.1 measures the color intensity of paprika by extracting pigments with acetone and recording absorbance at 460 nm. The absorbance reading, along with sample weight is then used to calculate the ASTA color value. The ASTA color value is a crucial quality parameter for paprika and other spices, as it indicates the intensity and vibrancy of the red color, which is a key characteristic for consumers and food manufacturers. In this study, the two extracted paprika samples were each measured three times to produce triplicate results (Table 4). Sample 1 had a corrected ASTA color value of approximately 103, and sample 2 had a corrected ASTA color value of approximately 61, indicating a lower color intensity. The corrected ASTA color value was automatically generated in an easy-to-read table of values, and a scan report was automatically exported into a user-defined location.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The Agilent Cary 3500 Multicell UV-Vis spectrophotometer with Agilent Cary UV Workstation software enabled fast, reliable, and standardized quality assessment of paprika samples. Using the well-established industry method, ASTA 20.1, the Cary 3500 system provided precise quantification of carotenoid pigments, supporting grading categorization. The high-throughput multicell design of the Cary 3500 Multicell UV-Vis spectrophotometer allows simultaneous measurement of up to seven samples and a reference, improving efficiency and minimizing variability. The Cary UV Workstation software simplifies data acquisition and analysis with intuitive spectral features such as the End of sequence analysis tool, which can be applied automatically to any scan method, and spectra comparisons through the Load spectrum tool. From sample absorbance measurement to final reporting, the Cary 3500 system eliminated the need for manual data processing or external tools, minimizing complexity and facilitating confidence.<h3>2. Forages provide bulk, help with weight maintenance, and combat several issues [1]. Alfalfa forage is high in protein—well-suited to promote muscle mass in beef cattle or to increase the production of dairy cows [2]. Alfalfa is also commonly used for horse feed. These animals require forages with good palatability along with high digestibility, intake potential, and protein levels, thus increasing the demand for alfalfa and other high-quality feeds. Farmers have responded by producing even higherquality alfalfa in recent years. Since forage quality depends on chemical, biological, and dynamic properties, both measured and calculated methods must be used. Standard alfalfa assays measure neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), ash, moisture, and protein. For alfalfa pellets, the mean particle size is also important. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers rapid and reliable prediction of fat, moisture, crude protein, fiber, ash and starch in a few seconds and without sample preparation.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT</h4>Samples of alfalfa (including fresh alfalfa, alfalfa pellets, and alfalfa cubes) were analyzed on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=NIR+Analyzer">Metrohm NIR Analyzer</a>. All measurements were performed in reflection mode using the large cup. The samples were measured in rotation to collect spectral data from several areas. Spectral averaging of signals from several spots helped to reduce sample inhomogeneity. The reference values were measured according to ISO norms described at the end of this Application Note. Metrohm software was used for all data acquisition and prediction model development.<h4>CONCLUSION&nbsp;</h4>This Application Note demonstrates the feasibility to determine multiple key parameters of alfalfa forage with NIR spectroscopy. Several analytical methods are usually required to measure key quality parameters for forage (Table 4). NIRS forage analysis enables a highly accurate, cost-effective, and fast alternative.<h3>3. In the United States, the Baby Food Safety Act 20211), and in the EU, Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/9152) and Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/19873) require the control of toxic metals contained in baby foods. ICP-MS is suitable for the analysis of trace amounts of toxic metal elements because it can perform multi-element simultaneous analysis with high sensitivity.However, baby foods vary in matrix composition, which raises concerns about non-spectral interferences and long-term stability during ICP-MS analysis. This Application News describes the analysis of five baby foods with different matrices using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ICPMS-2040%2F2050">ICPMS-2040/2050</a> (Fig. 1). Additionally, spike recovery tests and long-term stability were assessed based on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Elemental Analysis Manual (EAM) Section 4.74).<h4>Equipment Configuration and Analysis Conditions&nbsp;</h4>The equipment configuration is shown in Table 2. To reduce running costs, a mini-torch with lower argon gas consumption compared to conventional torches was used for analysis. Additionally, to streamline sample preparation, an Online Internal Standard Kit was utilized for online addition.&nbsp;The analysis conditions are detailed in Table 3. After analyzing high-concentration samples, the sample introduction system can influence the analysis values of subsequent samples (carryover). If carryover occurs, re-measurement is necessary, which consumes additional time and samples. With LabSolutions ICPMS, rinse solutions can be set for each sample, enabling effective cleaning in minimal time. Normal cleaning was performed using pure water (Rinse solution 1), and an additional acid rinse solution (Rinse solution 2) was introduced only after high-concentration samples.For example, Table 4 shows the difference in carryover concentration when measuring a blank sample after introducing a sample with a CCV concentration, comparing the case where rinse solution 2 is added for an additional 240 seconds to the case where it is not. Among the elements measured this time, Se and Hg tend to have a higher risk of carryover, but by introducing rinse solution 2, carryover was reduced to below the detection limit. Moreover, even if unexpectedly high-concentration samples are introduced, the Extended Rinsing function allows for automatic additional rinsing (Fig. 3). This eliminates the need to repeatedly check analysis values or to set a uniform cleaning time uniformly, thus reducing the verification effort, the amount of rinse solution required, and the analysis time while preventing carryover.&nbsp;Furthermore, to minimize time spent cleaning the sample introduction system, ProActive Rinsing was used (Fig. 4). When measuring multiple samples, starting the rinse in advance during measurement reduces the measurement time for subsequentsamples.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In this Application News, elemental analysis of baby food was conducted using the ICPMS-2040/2050. We achieved detection limits that met stringent standards. The spike recovery tests yielded good results for all samples with different matrices, confirming the validity of the analysis. Additionally, we analyzed 50 samples of infant formula with a high matrix over approximately six hours and confirmed good stability. The ICPMS-2040/2050 offers high sensitivity, accurate analysis, and good stability. Its Extended Rinsing and ProActive Rinsing functions effectively clean the sample introduction system, preventing carryover. Therefore, the ICPMS-2040/2050 is a suitable instrument for elemental analysis in baby food.<h3>4. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Food protection methods assessed by Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/food_protection_methods_surface_enhanced_raman_spectroscopy_an54670_en_5c5e701389.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Lipid oxidation is a major issue for the meat industry as it can not only affect&nbsp;sensory quality in terms of flavor and odor but can also lead to the formation of toxic compounds such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and cholesterol oxidation products, as well as the accumulation of carbonyls, alcohols and volatile acids. The degree of oxidation depends on various factors such as the type of meat, the fat content, the storage temperature, the availability of oxygen and the type of packaging1, 2. To prevent oxidation, synthetic antioxidants are commonly added to meat products, but consumers are now demanding more natural products3. Several studies have been carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of many essential oils or extracts from plants or spices such as rosemary, cinnamon or oregano, and the new trend is to develop innovative packaging by adding these natural antioxidants directly to the packaging materials4–6. These materials, often films, are known as “active packaging” because they enable the controlled release of active agents either on the surface or in the internal atmosphere of the product, or by trapping the radicals responsible for harmful effects on food quality. However, the antioxidant performance of these films must be accurately determined to enable the selection of the right packaging for each foodstuff.&nbsp;Among all the techniques available, Raman spectroscopy is a promising candidate for detecting most molecular species with high specificity and sensitivity, particularly in the presence of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). Indeed, SERS is a physical phenomenon that occurs in the presence of a rough nano-structured metallic surface that causes the intensification of Raman signals from molecules adsorbed to the surface thanks to the combination of a chemical effect and an electromagnetic effect7 . The metals used are generally gold or silver, which can be prepared by electrochemical roughening, metallic coating, or deposition of nanoparticles (often in a colloidal form). Commercial solutions are available, but many researchers prefer to create their own SERS substrates. The scope of this work is to investigate the potential of a home-made SERS substrate to compare the lipid oxidation over time in ground pork preserved either in a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) conventional packaging or in an active packaging containing oregano extract.<h4>Material and method&nbsp;</h4>Fresh ground pork meat was purchased in bulk from a local supermarket and 22 g samples of meat were placed in 5-cm diameter polystyrene Petri dishes. Each sample was covered with an active film and packed in an LDPE bag under a normal atmosphere. Reference samples were also prepared using conventional LDPE films. All samples were stored in a refrigerator at 5 °C and their lipid extracts were analyzed after 0, 7, 9, 11, 14 and 16 days using a home-made SERS substrate based on silver nanoparticles deposited on a glass Petri dish. A special home-made cooling system was used to perform the analyses at low temperature and SERS spectra were measured at -2 °C on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2239">Thermo Scientific™ DXR3 Raman Microscope</a> (Waltham, MA, USA) with a 532 nm laser source, a 900 lines/mm grating covering the 50-3500 cm-1 spectral range and an x10 objective (NA 0.40). The laser power was set at 5&nbsp;mW, and 20 exposures of 30 s each were selected to acquire all data. Thermo Scientific™ OMNIC™ v. 9.2 software was used for data collection and analysis. All the measurements were performed in triplicate. As the decrease in the peak at 1655&nbsp;cm-1 (stretching of C=C bonds from unsaturation) can be attributed to lipid peroxidation, and the 1439 cm-1 (scissoring deformation of CH2) is not affected by it, the area ratio between 1655 cm-1 and 1439 cm-1 bands was calculated to follow the lipid oxidation.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The effectiveness of a home-made SERS substrate coupled with a home-made cooling system was demonstrated for monitoring lipid oxidation in packaged ground pork meat over time. The advantages of this technique are its speed and the minimal sample handling requirements. An improvement factor of the order of 107 over conventional Raman was observed. This study also confirmed the greater efficacy of active packaging containing oregano extracts against lipid oxidation in ground pork, compared to conventional LDPE packaging.

ICP-MS is suitable for the analysis of trace REEs in basalt. However, the sample poses significant analytical challenges due to its complex matrix, high concentrations of major elements, and the risk of polyatomic interferences such as oxides and hydroxides of barium (Ba) and REEs that can compromise accuracy.1–3 Because it contains high levels of alumina, silica, and refractory metals, basalt can also compromise plasma robustness due to matrix-induced signal suppression.Various techniques have been used to measure REEs in geological samples, including multicollector (MC-) ICP-MS detection following α-hydroxyisobutyric acid (HIBA) separation.4 Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) offers excellent sensitivity for many lanthanides (and long lived actinides like thorium and uranium) but is constrained by long irradiation times and the need to access nuclear reactors.5 Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) provides highly precise isotopic measurements; however, it requires complex sample preparation and is unsuitable for routine multi-element analysis.6 Laser Ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) enables direct, spatially resolved measurements of geological samples but demands careful matrix matching of standards and is sensitive to variations in ablation behavior.7 High-Resolution ICP-MS (HR-ICP-MS) improves spectral resolution, yet its high cost, lower throughput, and operational complexity limit its widespread use. While these techniques remain valuable for specialized applications, they often fall short when laboratories require rapid, routine, and interference-free determination of lanthanides and actinides in rock matrices.&nbsp;ICP-MS has become the preferred technique for routine REE analysis due to its exceptional sensitivity, wide linear dynamic range, and multi-element capability. In this study, REE measurements were performed using an Agilent 7850 ICP-MS with an Agilent SPS 4 autosampler and controlled using Agilent ICP-MS MassHunter software. A preset method enabled the accurate and precise determination of 16 lanthanide and actinide elements in a single run, supporting high sample throughput. The 7850 includes Octopole Reaction System (ORS⁴) cell technology and optimized helium (He) collision mode to effectively remove polyatomic ion interferences using Kinetic Energy Discrimination (KED). Common interferences can be eliminated by the 7850 using default He KED tuning conditions, ensuring reliable analysis in complex matrices.8,9 As polyatomic ions pass through the ORS⁴ cell with an optimized helium flow, their larger collisional cross sections cause them to lose more kinetic energy via frequent collisions. Upon exiting the cell, these lower energy polyatomic ions are filtered out by the KED barrier, while analyte ions retain enough energy to pass through the quadrupole for detection by the electron multiplier detector. This process enables accurate multi element analysis using a single gas mode.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7850+ICP-MS">Agilent 7850 ICP-MS</a> equipped with the ORS4 cell and an Agilent SPS 4 autosampler was used for all the measurements of the basalt sample. (The same 7850 ICP-MS setup is also installed at Geochemistry and Geochronology facility of the Institute of Seismological Research, India.) Because ammonium fluoride (NH4 F) was used during sample preparation, the 7850 ICP-MS was fitted with the optional PFA kit and platinum sampling and skimmer cones. All 16 elements were measured using one set of He KED collision cell mode conditions. He KED ensures effective control of most background and matrix-based polyatomic interferences, such as ArO, ArCl, and BaO. The instrument was controlled using ICP-MS MassHunter software. Typical instrument operating parameters are listed in Table 1. The highlighted parameters were predefined by selecting the General Purpose preset method, while lens voltages were automatically tuned for optimal performance using the software’s autotune feature.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The Agilent 7850 ICP-MS successfully quantified all 16 lanthanides and actinide elements in the basalt CRM using a single helium KED cell method. The use of a General Purpose preset method and automated lens tuning routine within the Agilent ICP-MS MassHunter software streamlined the analytical workflow, minimizing instrument setup time and ensuring consistent instrument performance. These ease of use features simplified instrument operation while maintaining accurate, interference free results. Internal standard stability over three hours of continuous operation demonstrated the robustness of the 7850 under routine, high throughput conditions. This level of instrument stability is important for maintaining productivity, as it reduces drift, QC failures, sample reanalysis, and instrument maintenance. The 7850 ICP-MS method supports laboratories conducting routine, high-throughput multi-element analyses of demanding geological matrices.<h3>2. Metrohm: Flour analysis by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)</h3>NIR flour analysis determines moisture, protein, ash, gluten, starch, and rheological properties within seconds<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_123_download_f35ec480b3.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Monitoring ash content, along with key quality parameters such as protein and moisture content, can significantly enhance the milling yield of flour. Next to these chemical parameters, rheological parameters like baking strength or tenacity influence the product quality. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy enables chemical-free quality control of both chemical and rheological parameters, producing results within seconds. This simple, efficient, and rapid analysis method is ideal for continuous quality checks and can be implemented in laboratory settings or atline, requiring minimal training for effective use.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>A total of 237 flour samples, including wheat flour, spelt flour, and other types, were analyzed on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=omnis+nir">Metrohm OMNIS NIR Analyzer Solid</a> (Figure 1) with the large cup OMNIS NIR, 100 mm and OMNIS software. The samples were filled into the sample cup and analyzed in diffuse reflection mode. To include sample variety, the sample cup rotated during measurement to collect spectra from different locations. The automatically averaged spectra were used for model development. Reference values for moisture, protein, and ash content were obtained with the respective primary methods: moisture analysis followed AOAC 953.10, protein according to AOAC 2001.11, and ash content followed AOAC 923.03.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note shows the feasibility of using NIR spectroscopy for the analysis of several quality parameters in flour. With no chemicals involved, nearinfrared spectroscopy is an ideal way to avoid timeconsuming sample preparation and reduce costs. NIRS instruments from Metrohm allow users to not only to monitor the flour milling process, but also to predict the rheological properties of the dough the flour is produced with.<h3>3. Here, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel was irradiated with a laser, and the condition of the shock wave and cavitation generated upon laser light condensation (LC) was observed. PVA gel has high biocompatibility and is known as a promising biomaterial which is suitable for tissue mimicking. In this experiment, the newlydeveloped Hyper Vision HPV-X3 high-speed video camera was used to observe bubble expansion/contraction in PVA gel. In comparison with the conventional device, the recording speed (framerate) of the HPV-X3 is 2 times faster. The new HPV-X3 also provides 3 times higher resolution, supporting more detailed observation.<h4>Comparison of HPV-X3 and HPV-X2</h4>Fig. 2 shows images captured by the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=HPV-X3">HPV-X3</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=HPV-X2">HPV-X2</a>. The images show the condition of the bubble and shock wave after laser irradiation captured at 500 kfps (HP mode of HPV-X2). As can be seen in Fig. 2 (a) and (b), assuming the same device composition, the HPV-X3 can capture a wider field due to its larger sensor size. In Fig. 2 (c), the image has been partially cropped from Fig. 2 (b) to show the same field of view as the HPV-X2. It can be understood that the information in the cropped image is also clearer due to the three-fold improvement of the resolution of the HPV-X3. Thus, when a wide field of view is captured in order to check the phenomena and the image is then cropped to show only the phenomenon of interest, the HPV-X3 is the more suitable device thanks to its excellent resolution.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Hyper Vision and HPV are trademarks of Shimadzu Corporation or its affiliated companies in Japan and/or other countries. Using the new HPV-X3 high-speed video camera, the expansion/contraction of a bubble and shock wave when a laser was irradiated on PVA gel were observed. Because the resolution of the HPV-X3 is 3 times higher than that of the conventional device, resolution is adequate, and it is possible to obtain clear and distinct images, even when a wide angle of view is observed and the image is partially cropped. The HPV-X3 also has a maximum recording speed of 20 Mfps, which enabled detailed observation of the shock wave and the process of bubble collapse.<h3>4. The global demand for REEs has surged in recent years, driven by advancements in technology and the transition towards green energy solutions. REE magnets are compact, efficient, and hard to replace. Electric vehicles (EVs) and wind power are the main growth industries for these use cases.&nbsp;Although rare earth elements are relatively abundant in the earth’s crust, they are rarely concentrated into mineable ore deposits. REEs are associated with alkaline rocks, carbonatite (bastnäsite, monazite, parisite, and synchysite), pegmatite, and placer deposits (residual deposits formed from deep weathering) and are often discovered via geochemical exploration. They may also be absorbed in clay minerals or ion adsorption clays (IACs) such as kaolinite, illite and smectite. The ores of rare earth elements are mineralogically and chemically complex and commonly radioactive. REE mining is challenging because REEs are concentrated in more than one mineral, and each mineral requires a different costly extraction technology and mineral processing.&nbsp;For companies operating in REE exploration and mining, the accuracy of geochemical analysis is critical to assess the viability of deposits, respectively targeting REE rich areas for extraction. The Thermo Scientific™ ARL™ X’TRA Companion X-ray Diffractometer detects and quantifies mineral phases that contain REEs such as kaolinite, smectite, monazite and bastnasite. The EP Chapter &lt;3.2.1&gt; Glass Containers for Pharmaceutical Use includes a functionality test method to demonstrate adequate light resistance of colored glass containers through spectral transmission measurement. An included acceptance criterion specifies the allowed maximum amount of light transmitted by the tested material, defined by the drug product dosage administration form. For example, for glass containers that package oral drug products, the acceptance criterion defines that the observed spectral transmission should not exceed 10% at any wavelength in the range of 290 to 450 nm (&lt; 10%T).2 The identical test and criterion are found in USP Chapter &lt;660&gt; Containers – Glass.3 In addition, the USP Chapter &lt;661.2&gt; Plastic Packaging Systems for Pharmaceutical Use also includes the analogous functionality test method and acceptance criterion for plastic pharmaceutical packaging.4&nbsp;The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Cary+60+UV%E2%80%91Vis">Cary 60 UV-Vis spectrophotometer</a>, equipped with the Cary 60 UV-Vis DRA, was chosen for measurement due to its extended ability to reliably measure precise transmission of scattering materials (Figure 1). The Cary 60 UV-Vis is a versatile spectrophotometer; however, measuring materials like plastics and glass, which are textured, translucent, or opaque in a manner that scatters light can result in challenges in satisfactorily measuring light transmittance with standard techniques. In a standard spectrophotometer, scattering materials tend to diffuse transmitted light, deviating an unquantifiable amount of light from the direct optical path of the detector. The detector may not collect all the scattered (lost) light, resulting in inaccurate measurements and results.&nbsp;For this reason, the Cary 60 UV-Vis was equipped with an internal DRA, which uses a 50 mm integrating PTFE-coated sphere that easily sits inside the spectrophotometer's sample compartment. For these applications, using a DRA can optimize light collection. The sphere's design captures all scattered light uniformly, overcoming scattering losses for accurate measurement of transmitted light. In applications where total transmission is crucial for quality assurance, the DRA is an essential tool for accurate measurements.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In this application note, an Agilent Cary 60 UV-Vis spectrophotometer, fitted with an Agilent Cary 60 UV‑Vis DRA, was used to reliably and quickly determine the spectral transmission of packaging systems used for pharmaceuticals, following the EP &lt;3.2.1&gt;, USP &lt;660&gt;, and USP &lt;661.2&gt; test methods for functionality of light-resistant packaging systems. The integrating sphere enabled the instrument to accurately measure total transmittance of plastic and glass (scattering) materials.&nbsp;All containers presented less than the defined maximum %T specification, demonstrating light-resistance functionality for containing light-sensitive drug products for oral administration. This method illustrates the importance of accurate testing for quality assurance of pharmaceutical packaging. The Agilent Cary 60 UV-Vis spectrophotometer, paired with Cary WinUV Pharma software, delivers secure data management and compliance for regulated pharmaceutical labs.<h3>2. Metrohm: Multiparameter hops analysis by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)</h3>Rapid determination of alpha acids, beta acids, cohumulone content, total oil content, HSI, and moisture<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_130_download_6177b89ee1.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>The quality of hops and hop pellets is vital across the entire brewing supply chain. Traditional methods used for quality control (e.g., titration and HPLC) are highly accurate and widely accepted. They are also time consuming, labor intensive, and dependent on chemical reagents which not only incur ongoing material costs but also require careful handling and proper disposal. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers a compelling alternative when ultra-high precision is not necessary. It enables the rapid analysis of multiple parameters within a minute without using any chemicals. This Application Note outlines the measurement setup and the results of cohumulone, hop oils, and moisture content, the hop storage index (HSI), and hops acids analysis with NIRS.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>More than 500 fresh hop samples and ground hop pellets were analyzed on an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=omnis+nir">OMNIS NIR Analyzer Solid</a> (Figure 1). The samples were added to an OMNIS sample cup and analyzed in diffuse reflection mode. To include sample variety, the sample rotated during measurement to collect spectra from different locations. The automatically averaged spectra were used for model development. Spectra acquisition, model development, and validation were carried out with the OMNIS Software.&nbsp;Reference values for alpha acids were obtained using various official methods, including EBC 7.4, EBC 7.5, and EBC 7.7. Total oils and beta acid content were determined using EBC 7.4, while EBC 7.7 was employed for cohumulone analysis. Moisture content and the hop storage index (HSI) were measured using a halogen moisture analyzer and a UV-VIS photometer, respectively.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note demonstrates the feasibility of using NIR spectroscopy for the analysis of freshly harvested hops and ground hop pellets to determine cohumulone, moisture, and total oil content, HSI, and alpha and beta acids. Using alpha acids as an example, the difference between a prediction model covering the full concentration range and a model specific to a narrower range was highlighted. The latter reduced the prediction error by a factor of two.&nbsp;Users can apply this approach to maximize accuracy. In the OMNIS Software, both models can be combined to automatically perform the following sequence. First, the alpha acid concentration is estimated using the broad-range model; then, a more precise prediction is made using the restricted-range model.<h3>3. In particular, for applications such as transportation equipment, where materials may be subjected to impact loads, it is essential to evaluate not only static properties but also impact properties. When subjected to impact, materials may exhibit stress and strain characteristics different from those under static loading, making it essential to quantify these characteristics through impact testing.&nbsp;The Hopkinson bar method is a well-established technique for impact compression testing. Proposed by B. Hopkinson, this method enables detailed analysis of a material’s impact response and evaluation of its fracture properties by subjecting the specimen to a sudden force using a bar-launching device. This paper presents an example of an impact compression test on an acrylic specimen with a central circular hole, recorded with an HPV-X3 high-speed video camera (Fig. 2) using the Hopkinson bar method.<h4>Imaging System&nbsp;</h4>The imaging devices are listed in Table 1, and the imaging conditions are listed in Table 2. As shown in Fig. 4(b), laser illumination was directed from the rear of the specimen toward the lens, and imaging was performed with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=HPV-X3">HPV-X3</a> using a close-up ring, bellows, and macro lens. This setup enabled observation of the fracture process in the acrylic block. Two types of imaging were conducted: observation of crack propagation immediately after loading, and observation of subsequent fracture.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The impact compression test of an acrylic specimen using the Hopkinson bar method was observed using the HPV-X3 highspeed video camera. Inside the compressed specimen, the propagation of a wavefront believed to be a stress wave was first observed. Subsequently, cracks propagated from the central circular hole toward the left and right surfaces, and finally, diagonal cracks formed, leading to complete fracture. The progress of this series of fracture processes was clearly captured.&nbsp;The HPV-X3 has three times the resolution of the previous <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=HPV-X2">HPVX2 model</a>, enabling more detailed observation of specimens during impact tests, including the Hopkinson bar method. Furthermore, because fracture phenomena during impact testing occur at high speeds, the HPV-X3, which can record images at up to 20 Mfps, is ideal for capturing them.<h3>4. Because of its sweet and mild taste, whey permeate is often used in bakeries and chocolate manufacturing. The key to optimizing whey permeate production is to control production streams in real time. It is important to monitor the production process with highthroughput analytical techniques to maximize product yield and ensure high product quality.&nbsp;Nearinfrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a fast, and chemicalfree analysis technique that can support this kind of testing. NIR spectroscopy can measure the most important quality parameters (i.e., protein, lactose, moisture, ash, pH, and phosphate) simultaneously in whey permeate without any sample preparation. The NIRS solution is fast, easy to operate, and can be used atline or offline in a quality control lab.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>158 whey permeate samples were analyzed on a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=NIR+analyzer">Metrohm NIR Analyzer</a> equipped with a small cup accessory. All measurements were performed in reflection mode (1000–2250 nm). Metrohm software was used for data acquisition and prediction model development.<h4>CONCLUSION&nbsp;</h4>This Application Note demonstrates the feasibility of using NIR spectroscopy for whey permeate quality control. Near infrared-spectroscopy is a rapid, nondestructive analytical technique that can monitor the production process of dairy products. Aside from the analysis of whey permeate, the whey protein production stream can also be monitored by NIRS.<h3>2. Catalysis can be classified as either homogeneous or heterogeneous (although drug and chemical production processes typically use homogeneous catalytic systems). While homogeneous catalysis allows for precise control over catalytic reactions, recovering the catalyst after the reaction can be difficult.&nbsp;Nevertheless, managing the levels of residual catalysts in industrial products is critical to ensure safety and because of their high costs. For example, the ICH Q3D Guideline for Elemental Impurities (adopted in April 2017) requires risk assessments when materials such as metal catalysts are added intentionally during a production process.&nbsp;Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry offers a simple but effective technique for assessing the levels of residual metal catalysts. Normally, the lower limit of quantification for EDXRF spectrometric analysis of heavy metals is above 1 mg/kg, which limitsits use in quantitative analysis. However, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ALTRACE">ALTRACE</a> is equipped with a high-power X-ray tube that dramatically improves its sensitivity for heavy metals, enabling their determination at 1 mg/kg and below in lessthan 10 minutes. This Application News describes using ALTRACE to determine residual levels of a homogeneous catalyst after a synthesis reaction. The catalyst used in this analysis is palladium (Pd), which is a widely applied heavy metal catalyst, and the reaction catalyzed by the Pd catalyst is a cross-coupling reaction. A metal scavenger and activated carbon were each used to remove the Pd catalyst from the reaction products. Metal scavengers are frequently used in this role, and activated carbon offers a relatively cheap method for removing catalysts.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Common methods of elemental impurity analysis, such as atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), ICP atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and ICP mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), require liquid samples, so solid and powder samples must be prepared into a solution prior to analysis. However, EDXRF spectrometry can determine levels of elemental impurities regardless of the sample phase or form (solution, powder, etc.), provided the target element is distributed uniformly throughout the sample. The sensitivity of ALTRACE for heavy metals has been substantially improved compared to previous models, allowing for rapid quantitative determination of heavy metals at 1 mg/kg and below. Based on the performance presented in this article, ALTRACE is an effective tool for managing residual levels of metal catalysts.<h3>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: The Raman Spectroscopy of Graphene and the Determination of Layer Thickness</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/raman_spectroscopy_graphene_determination_layer_thickness_an52252_29274e8aea.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Currently, a tremendous amount of study is being directed toward graphene. This interest is driven by the novel properties that graphene possesses and its potential use in a variety of application areas that include but are not limited to electronics, heat transfer, bio-sensing, membrane technology, battery technology and advanced composites. Graphene exists as a transparent two-dimensional network of carbon atoms. It can exist as a single atomic-layer thick material, or it can be readily stacked to form stable, moderately thick samples containing millions of layers—a form generally referred to as graphite. However, the interesting properties exhibited by graphene (substantial electrical and thermal conductivity, high mechanical strength, and high optical transparency) are only observed for graphene films that contain only one or a few layers. Therefore, developing technologies and devices based upon graphene’s unusual properties requires accurate determination of the layer thickness for materials under investigation. Raman spectroscopy can be employed to provide a fast, non-destructive means of determining layer thickness for graphene thin films.<h4>Instrument considerations&nbsp;</h4>There are a few specifications that should be considered when selecting a Raman instrument for graphene characterization. First, since graphene samples are usually very small, selecting a Raman instrument with microscopy capabilities is imperative.The next issue to consider is which excitation laser to select. While graphene measurements can be made successfully with any of the readily available Raman lasers, it is also important to consider the substrate that the graphene will be deposited onto. It is common for graphene to be deposited on on either Si or SiO2 substrates, and both of these materials can exhibit fluorescence with near-infrared (NIR) lasers such as 780 nm or 785 nm. For this reason, visible lasers are usually recommended, typically a 633 nm or 532 nm laser.&nbsp;Next, since relatively small wavenumber shifts can significantly impact the interpretation of the Raman spectra, it is crucial to have a robust wavelength calibration across the entire spectrum. Using a single point wavelength calibration with some other applications may be sufficient, but this only ensures that one wavelength is calibrated and leaves room for a large margin of error. A multipoint wavelength calibration that is regularly refreshed, such as the standard calibration routine used with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products?category=184&amp;manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=dxr3">Thermo Scientific DXR3 Raman instruments</a>, will provide considerably more confidence in the results. It is also necessary to have an instrument with high wavenumber precision to observe small wavenumber shifts when altering the sample. In fact, small wavenumber shifts can represent changes in the sample rather than represent the variability from the instrument. There is a common myth that it is necessary to utilize high resolution in order to achieve high wavenumber precision. Not only is this incorrect, but a high resolution will actually add considerable noise to the spectrum, which will add to the wavenumber variability. A high degree of wavenumber precision, such as that provided by the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2239">Thermo Scientific™ DXR™3 Raman Microscope</a>, will significantly improve data confidence even when you are evaluating band shifts from low levels of strain or doping. It is also important to have exact control of your laser power at the sample and be able to adjust that laser power in small increments. This is important to control temperature-related effects and to provide flexibility to maximize Raman signal while still avoiding sample heating or damage from the laser. The DXR3 Raman systems are equipped with a unique device called a laser power regulator, which maintains laser power with unprecedented accuracy and provides exceptional ability to fine-tune laser power and optimize it for each experiment.1&nbsp;Lastly, the Raman microscope must have an automated stage and associated software to generate detailed Raman point maps. As will be seen in the next section, Raman point mapping or imaging extends the single point measurement to assess a sample’s layer thickness uniformity. The Thermo Scientific OMNIC™ Software suite contains powerful mapping and processing tools that diminish the complexity of collecting highly detailed maps and interpreting their results.<h4>Conclusions&nbsp;</h4>Raman spectroscopy is an excellent tool for the characterization of graphene and layer thickness. Few techniques will provide as much information about the structure of graphene samples as Raman spectroscopy, and any lab doing graphene characterization without Raman would be at a significant disadvantage. The DXR3 Raman Microscope is an ideal Raman instrument for graphene characterization because it can provide the high level of stability, control, and sensitivity needed to produce confident results.<h3>4. Waters Corporation: See What’s Really in Your Formulation with Backgrounded Membrane Imaging</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720009098_en_5d36d71789.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Protein aggregation in therapeutic protein products can induce adverse immunogenic responses in patients1–4 . Per the FDA’s recommendations, “strategies to minimize aggregate formation should be developed as early as feasible in product development”5 and “an assessment should be made of the range and levels of subvisible particles (2–10 µm) present in therapeutic protein products initially and over the course of the shelf life”.5 Yet, accurate subvisible protein aggregation analysis has remained elusive to protein drug formulators since current subvisible analyzers are not sensitive enough to measure protein aggregates effectively. In this application note, we explore how backgrounded membrane imaging (BMI), a high refractive index contrast technique used by the HORIZON particle analysis system, performs highly sensitive measurements of subvisible protein aggregates in the 2 µm–4 mm size range, enabling 30% higher reproducibility compared to flow imaging.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>When studying the impact of protein aggregate refractive index, IgG protein aggregates analyzed on both the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=5&amp;search=HORIZON">HORIZON® instrument</a> and flow imager systems produced equivalent particle count trends. However, the HORIZON® system was more sensitive (measured more overall counts) and had overall lower variability with average CVs of 14.4% compared to the flow imager which produced average CVs of 20.1%. The differences in variability and counts were most pronounced at lower concentrations and size range respectively. Given that most particles in a therapeutic drug formulation are small, the inability of flow imagers to accurately count the smallest of protein aggregates has a dramatic impact on the total number of particles measured. This can mean an undercounting by as much as 3–10X depending on the protein and formulation conditions.&nbsp;High variability at low concentrations in flow imagers can pose a hurdle for early stage analysis were sample is scarce. In low volume analysis (&lt;250 µL), the possibility of measuring fewer particles increases, therefore it is imperative to have high sensitivity measurements when already challenged by low sampling statistics.&nbsp;In the excipient effect study, sucrose did not have an impact on the overall particle counts when measured using the HORIZON® system. This contrasts with previous studies comparing excipient effects on three flow imagers.10 In each case, the particle counts decreased up to 30% or more using standard sucrose formulation concentrations of 0–20%. The difference between the data generated by BMI and FI can be attributed to the fact that the HORIZON® instrument is not affected by particle or solution refractive index.&nbsp;Flow imagers are deeply vulnerable to the impact of refractive index when measuring protein aggregates due to their translucency and the negative impact of surfactants. Due to this basic optical phenomenon, flow imagers can dramatically undersize and undercount particles. Finding the right tool for the job will have a critical impact on data accuracy and sensitivity. Powered with BMI, the HORIZON® system provides high refractive index contrast analysis to enable accurate, robust, and sensitive subvisible particle counting from 2 µm–4 mm in as little as 25 µL of sample and 96 samples in under 2 hours.

This allows pet food manufacturers to satisfy nutritional adequacy requirements, meet regulatory guidelines, and provide high-quality foods to pet owners. Traditional analysis methods are often slow and laborintensive. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy provides a fast, nondestructive alternative for analyzing these key quality control parameters with minimal sample preparation. This study evaluates the use of NIR spectroscopy in the pet food industry for efficient and reliable quality control during dried pet food production.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>199 dried pet food samples (mainly dog and cat food) from different suppliers were analyzed in whole and ground forms on an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=OMNIS+NIR">OMNIS NIR Analyzer</a> Solid (Figure 1). The samples were added to an OMNIS sample cup and analyzed in diffuse reflection mode. To include sample variety, the sample rotated during measurement to collect spectra from different locations. The automatically averaged spectra were used for model development. Reference values were obtained by official methods such as ISO 6496 (moisture), ISO 5983 (protein), ISO 5984 (ash), and ISO 6492 (fat).<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note demonstrates the feasibility of using NIR spectroscopy for the analysis of several pet food quality parameters, including protein, moisture, fat, and ash. Results indicate that lower prediction errors can be obtained when grinding pet food samples before their analysis. A comparison between different methods used for the analysis of pet food clearly highlights the significant time-saving potential of NIR spectroscopy (Table 1). Furthermore, the simplicity of the analysis and the availability of a pre-calibrated instrument, using the pre-calibration, dry pet food, solid (6.06008.027), make both the implementation and the application of NIR spectroscopy with OMNIS NIRS straightforward.<h3>2. First-generation bioethanol, produced mainly from corn, sugarcane, and similar crops, has been widely used. However, to avoid competition with food supplies, research and development are also advancing on second-generation bioethanol produced from non-food raw materials such as cellulosic materials. For example in Japan, seven companies including Toyota Motor Corporation have formed the raBit (Research Association of Biomass Innovation for Next Generation Automobile Fuels) to advance technologies for next-generation bioethanol. Shimadzu is also participating as a supporting member to promote R&amp;D through technical cooperation for analysis.&nbsp;Fuels in which bioethanol is blended into gasoline are referred to as E5 (up to 5% bioethanol), E10 (up to 10% bioethanol), etc.; using these fuels in vehicles can reduce environmental impact. At the same time, ethanol blended into gasoline and used as a fuel is required to meet trace element concentration limits (e.g., for copper) specified in standards such as ASTM D48061) and EN 153762). ICP-OES is commonly used for these analyses, but when ultra-trace impurity levels must be measured, higher-sensitivity ICP-MS is more suitable.&nbsp;In this Application, trace elements in first-generation and second-generation bioethanol were determined using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ICPMS-2050">ICPMS-2050</a> (Fig. 1). Spike recoveries were also evaluated to confirm the validity of the analytical results.<h4>Conclusion</h4>In this Application, bioethanol was introduced directly into the ICPMS-2050 using an organic solvent introduction system to determine trace elements. Good spike recoveries were obtained, demonstrating that bioethanol can be analyzed accurately by direct injection.<h3>3. LNPs encapsulate genetic material in submicrometer sized lipid vesicles, deliver large biologic payloads, exhibit low immunogenicity, and can enable large manufacturing scalability as seen with the Moderna® and Pfizer® mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. Like all biologics, LNPs can be physically unstable2, aggregate, and form subvisible particles (SVPs), and thus need to be properly formulated and evaluated for physical and chemical stability3. The next generation of LNPs are even more chemically and biologically complex than their predecessors1, presenting unique challenges in both their stability and manufacturability. Accurate low volume subvisible particle measurements will form a critical aspect of the quality assessment of LNPs.&nbsp;Like all injectables, LNPs are subject to USP 787/788 SVP testing4 . However, USP 788 compendial Method 1, light obscuration (LO), is deemed “unsuitable to measure liposomal and colloidal suspensions” as stated in the chapter. In fact, USP 788 recommends membrane microscopy (Compendial Method 2) for measuring liposomal formulations, given LO’s inability to handle solutions with a complex matrix4. Aura uses Backgrounded Membrane Imaging (BMI), a form of membrane microscopy that enables high throughput, low volume subvisible particle characterization. In this application note, we demonstrate how Aura™ GT System can accurately and thoroughly characterize the subvisible particle content of LNPs with volumes as little as 25 µL per sample. We focus on the analysis of two LNP samples formulated in different buffers and subjected temperature and freeze thaw stresses. In addition, we use Aura GT’s SYBR™ Gold assay5 to help characterize nucleic acid escape in stressed LNP samples and quantitatively analyze the stability and purity of these samples.<h4>Experimental</h4><h5>Particle Measurements&nbsp;</h5>LNP samples were measured using BMI and Fluorescence Membrane Microscopy (FMM) using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=5&amp;search=aura+gt">Aura GT </a>on a black membrane plate. This procedure was adapted for each stress condition three wells were loaded with 25uL per well, and the filtrate stained with 1x SYBR Gold (2% v/v DMSO in PBS) for 1 min prior to FMM measurements. This procedure was adapted from Application note 16.5<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Both samples A and B showed significant subvisible particle formation, more than 1x10^6/mL &gt;2 µm across most conditions except thermal stress, pointing to inherently unstable LNP formulations. Freeze thaw cycles significantly increased subvisible particle formation, while heat stress significantly reduced the subvisible particle concentration across both samples. Compared to protein formulations, this heat stress effect may appear unconventional. However, considering the LNP composition and upon further look at the literature, we are able to understand this phenomenon and conclude that significant heat stress can break a liposomal formulation apart3 , increasing the LNP solubility and thereby resulting in less insoluble particles captured on the membrane. On the other hand, freeze thawing produces more insoluble aggregates, thereby increasing subvisible counts as shown in BMI, exhibiting similar behavior to heat induced aggregation as in most protein formulations. A recurring theme in subvisible particle stability is that each formulation exhibits its own particle profile, LNPs are no exception. Another interesting data point is that freeze thawed LNPs showed significant SYBR Gold staining, whereas unstressed LNPs did not, indicating a unique nucleic acid leakage or rupture behavior for this type of stress. Finally, we also observed that buffer type did not significantly impact the subvisible particle count (data not shown). Whilst we observed significant particle counts across all samples tested, pH and buffer variance did not significantly increase particle formation. Indeed, several LNP formulations have reported robust stability profiles across a variety of buffers3 . Filtration of the final product may not be appropriate, as particle formation occurs following filtration, most likely in a concentration dependent manner (Figure 4). Multiple filtration steps, whilst able to clear the product, will undoubtedly result in reduced concentration of pharmacologically active LNPs and as a function of time particles will return as described in our “What Happens When I Filter My Sample” Application Note 21.&nbsp;In conclusion, Aura enables high throughput, low volume, accurate sub-visible particle analysis with direct applicability for LNP stability assessment. Arcane particle analysers, unsuitable for LNP assessment, will struggle to overcome the challenges associated with the physical and chemical complexity of LNPs. Indeed, Aura resolved these key challenges, providing a solution to sub-visible particle analysis of LNPs, from early stage inception through to product release.

Accurate determination of a wide range of elements is therefore critical for environmental monitoring, oceanographic research, and regulatory compliance. EPA Method 200.8 provides a widely adopted quality control (QC) framework for trace metal analysis in natural waters.3 However, seawater’s high salinity and major components such as Na, Mg, Cl, and S create analytical challenges for conventional ICP-MS analysis, including ionization suppression and polyatomic interferences, such as ArCl+ on As, ArNa+ on Cu, SO2 + on Zn. Overcoming these issues requires advanced interference removal techniques and high sensitivity. Triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) addresses these limitations through its MS/MS configuration.Agilent ICP-MS/MS methods precisely control reaction chemistry and eliminate interferences, ensuring accurate quantification in complex saline matrices.&nbsp;The Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS with its unique Dual-Cell System (DCS) enables accurate, efficient seawater analysis using enhanced collision/reaction cell (CRC) technologies. Its performance is primarily driven by Advanced Helium Mode (AHM). This advanced collision mode delivers exceptional on-mass interference removal using a combination of Kinetic Energy Discrimination (KED) and Collision Induced Dissociation (CID), ensuring precise quantification even in highly saline and complex matrices.4 Additionally, Air cell mode enables fast, effective mass-shift reactions, adding flexibility for overcoming challenging interferences.5 By seamlessly integrating AHM with Air cell mode, the 9500 simplifies workflows and delivers reliable results for trace analysis of multiple elements in seawater.&nbsp;In this study, a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">9500 ICP-QQQ</a> fitted with the AVS MS was used to quantify 26 elements in two seawater certified reference materials (CRMs) and a sample collected in Singapore, employing an online reverse-dilution approach. The method was assessed following the performance requirements of EPA Method 200.8.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Traditional seawater analysis by ICP‑MS often requires extensive sample preparation, such as dilution and matrix separation, to address high salinity and complex matrix effects. These additional steps increase both turnaround time and contamination risk. The method developed here enables direct seawater analysis using an online reverse-dilution approach, eliminating manual preparation and enabling rapid, high-throughput processing. Using the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ with AVS MS in online dilution mode, the workflow achieved ppt-level MDLs for 26 elements, excellent accuracy (90–110% recoveries for CRMs and spiked samples), and long-term stability across more than 130 analyses, meeting EPA Method 200.8 QC requirements.&nbsp;Key advantages of the 9500 ICP-QQQ method:&nbsp;<ul><li>Effective interference removal: Advanced gas modes (AHM and Air cell mode) controlled polyatomic species originating from the high-salinity matrices.&nbsp;</li><li>High throughput: Automated online dilution and seamless gas-switching enabled complete analysis in 140 seconds per sample.&nbsp;</li><li>Robust stability: Optimized rinse protocols ensured consistent ISTD recovery and instrument performance over a seven-hour run comprising 100 injections of undiluted seawater samples.&nbsp;</li></ul>This workflow delivers fast, reliable, and high-quality seawater analysis, making it ideal for environmental monitoring and marine research laboratories seeking maximum efficiency without compromising data integrity.<h3>2. Metrohm: Moisture and protein content in corn starch with NIR spectroscopy</h3>Easily measure the quality of corn starch in seconds with NIR<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_151_download_087f0d33e0.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Starch is a fundamental component in candy production where it is often used as a gelling agent and thickener. The confectionery industry uses it to create products with a certain consistency, like pie fillings. It is also used in a process known as starch molding where shapes are pressed into a corn starch bed for gummy candies and similar treats. Corn starch also acts as a desiccant during the candies' drying process before reuse. Therefore, the corn starch moisture content is a very important factor to consider in this process.&nbsp;Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a fast, chemicalfree analysis technique for the determination of moisture content and corn protein content in corn starch. The NIRS solution is easy to use and can be used either atline or in a quality control laboratory.<h4>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</h4>210 samples of corn starch were measured with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=OMNIS+NIR">OMNIS NIR Analyzer Solid</a> (Figure 1). All measurements were performed in reflection mode (1000–2250 nm) using a large holder and large cup (Table 1). OMNIS Software was used for all data acquisition and prediction model development. Karl Fischer titration was used to determine the water content in corn starch, and the Kjeldahl method was used to determine its protein content.<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>This Application Note shows the feasibility of using near-infrared spectroscopy for the determination of moisture and protein content in corn starch. Compared to the conventional analysis techniques used to determine these quality parameters, NIRS saves a considerable amount of time and costs. With NIR spectroscopy, analyses can be conducted without using any chemical reagents, giving users reliable results in seconds.<h3>3. In fatigue failure, cracks initiate from microdefects in the material, internal voids, inclusions, and other features, and then propagate under repeated loading until final fracture occurs. To evaluate this sequence of processes, it is effective to observe defects and crack propagation nondestructively.&nbsp;Traditionally, crack observation has focused on visual inspection and microscopic observation, but these methods are limited to information near the surface. To sufficiently capture the threedimensional shape and changes in cracks propagating inside a material, observation of the fractured specimen after failure has generally been used. In contrast, X-ray CT can nondestructively visualize internal defects and cracks in three dimensions, making it possible to evaluate in detail changes in crack morphology, including in the interior.&nbsp;Accordingly, using the “Air-Servo Microfocus X-Ray CT System,” which combines X-ray CT with a fatigue testing machine, repeated tests were performed in which loading was stopped at fixed cycle intervals and imaging was carried out. This article introduces the resulting process of crack initiation and propagation in the same specimen.<h4>Conclusion</h4>Using the Air-Servo Microfocus X-Ray CT System, cracks propagating from the notch region of an aluminum alloy specimen were observed. First, static tests and fatigue tests were performed using the servo pulser EHF-LV, and a S-N diagram was obtained. Based on the obtained S-N diagram, the fatigue test conditions for the Air-Servo Microfocus X-Ray CT System were determined, and X-ray CT imaging was performed. The process of crack propagation according to the number of cycles was observed in cross-sectional images and 3D images. In addition, by visualizing the displacement from a specific cycle onward, it was also confirmed that the specimen necked down just before fracture.&nbsp;Using the measurement system introduced in this article, it is possible to observe changes in specimen shape over time while the specimen remains mounted in the jig. Therefore, not only the crack propagation process of a specimen during fatigue testing, but also material deformation behavior and the process of shape change can be observed.<h3>4. The basic elements of XRF spectrometer systems include a radiation source, a sample, and an X-ray detector. The analysis relies on the interaction of radiation source output (an X-ray source) with a sample, in this case, the cup of ionic salt material, such as Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide or other chemicals and salts. The XRF system can characterize materials, due to the fundamental principle that each element has a unique atomic structure, which in turn has a unique set of peaks (x-ray lines) in its emission spectrum. The energy dispersive X-ray detector separates (disperses) the detected radiation emitted from the sample by energy, thus providing a spectrum from which the different elements present in the sample can be identified and/ or quantified.<h4>Algorithm&nbsp;</h4>Handheld XRF devices often cannot detect elements lighter than Magnesium by their fluorescence lines, however many compounds contain elements of interest such as Oxygen and Hydrogen. Additionally, relying solely on primary fluorescence peaks to identify target compounds can lead to misinterpretation. For instance, if MgO and NaCl are present in a 1:1 mixture, the resulting XRF spectrum would display distinct characteristic Mg and Cl peaks. However, the sample would not actually be the spectrum of MgCl₂, as the analytical response of Mg and Cl would be very different in both samples because of a dilution effect and absorption from Na and O atoms. The XRF process can easily differentiate samples with similar elemental constituents but with different chemical structures by analyzing the resulting scatter from the sample and comparing the full spectrum to a calibration library of compounds. Figure 4 shows XRF spectra of Sodium Chlorate (NaClO₃) and Sodium Perchlorate (NaClO₄) taken with the IonicX XRF instrument. In this example, only the Cl fluorescence peak can be detected by the IonicX device as Na and O fluorescence X-rays have energies that are too weak to be detected. However, when the spectrum is normalized, in this case to the primary Compton peak of Ag Kα, a slight but distinguishable difference can be seen in the spectral intensity between the energies of 25 keV and 40 keV. The difference in the scatter of the X-ray tube Bremsstrahlung is caused by differences in mass absorption coefficients of the presented samples, in this case it is the extra O atom in the NaClO₄ molecule vs the NaClO₃ molecule.<h4>Summary&nbsp;</h4>The IonicX Portable XRF Analyzer is a powerful addition for the verification of ionic salt type chemicals, utilizing XRF technology in a versatile, easy to use, small form factor. IonicX provides clear, easy to understand, unambiguous results and tools to assist with compliance and data integrity. IonicX is a robust verification tool which allows pharmaceutical companies to more efficiently verify incoming chemicals that typically have been tested using lengthy wet-chemistry techniques.
