This Application Note describes how the doping control lab in Kreischa, Germany used the Agilent 7010 Triple Quadrupole GC/MS System (TQ) for enhanced targeted detection of anabolic‑androgenic steroids in urine samples. The 7010 TQ enabled higher sensitivity, longer maintenance-free intervals, and more stable operation than earlier models, and satisfied all measurement specifications required by the World Anti‑Doping Agency (WADA). The 7010 TQ GC/MS ion source produces more ions, and provides exceptional sensitivity for the detection of low intensity metabolites weeks after drug ingestion. However, this higher sensitivity may lead to saturation of endogenous components naturally present at higher concentrations. This method provides a sensitive and robust operation over a wide concentration range, permitting the detection of low-concentration exogenous species in the presence of high‑concentration endogenous species, which can vary with ethnicity.<h4>Experimental</h4>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7010">Agilent 7010 GC/TQ system</a> consists of an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/gcms/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7890">Agilent 7890 GC</a> with multimode inlet and backflush, an Agilent 7993A, and the Agilent 7010 TQ mass spectrometer.<h4>Conclusions&nbsp;</h4>Based on the method optimization and thorough testing at the Kreischa lab, an Agilent 7010 GC/MS-based protocol was developed. This protocol fulfills the screening and confirmation requirements of steroid measurements in doping control labs. With this method, it is possible to detect traces of exogenous anabolic steroid metabolites while quantifying small concentrations of testosterone and epitestosterone typical in Asian populations. It permits the measurement of high‑abundance endogenous steroids such as androsterone and etiocholanolone in the same injection, while analyzing testosterone/epitestosterone and androsterone/etiocholanolone ratios without suppression.&nbsp;The backflush capability of the system protects the analytical column, and consequently the mass spectrometer, by removing heavy matrix components. This allowed more than 6,000 samples to be analyzed on the same column without requiring ion source cleaning or filament change. It also demonstrated that the higher, 130&nbsp;eV electron energy did not sacrifice the filament lifetime. The mixture contains 100 compounds representing a broad range of chemical classes, including alkanes, alcohols, ketones, esters, lactones, phthalates, and aromatic compounds. Stability was a key criterion in compound selection, and the mixture was developed through cross-laboratory collaboration for column characterization, method assessment, and quality control. Its structured chromatographic behavior also makes it useful for studying how different compound classes behave in GC×GC separations.A major part of the work examined the factors influencing retention indices (RI) in GC×GC systems, which are important for reliable compound annotation in non-targeted analysis. An inter-laboratory study involved 11 GC×GC systems using cryogenic, Peltier, and flow modulation, different detectors, and both normal and reversed column configurations. Principal component analysis showed clear grouping according to normal versus reversed orthogonality, confirming the strong influence of stationary-phase configuration. A subsequent design-of-experiments study evaluated 140 combinations of temperature ramp rate, carrier-gas flow rate, modulation period, and secondary-oven temperature offset.The results showed that the influence of experimental conditions is strongly compound dependent. Of the compounds evaluated in the statistical model, 33 showed RI variation that could be linked to the investigated parameters, whereas 43 did not follow the model well. Compounds such as quinoline, phthalates, lactones, terpenes, and some aromatic compounds showed particularly pronounced effects. For quinoline, for example, the model explained about 93% of RI variability, with differences of approximately 75 RI units across the tested conditions, while 2-hexanone showed considerably weaker dependence. Overall, temperature ramp rate and flow rate emerged as particularly important parameters, although the magnitude of their effect depended on compound chemistry and column configuration.The Century Mix is therefore being developed not only as a characterization mixture but also as a tool for system quality control and more reliable retention-index prediction. Repeated standardized QC measurements demonstrated very low RI variability and can be used to monitor system stability, experimental effects, and potential instrument drift. The broader goal is to better understand the fundamental chemistry governing GC×GC retention and ultimately improve method development, data processing, and identification of unknown compounds by combining high-quality separations, mass spectra, and predicted retention information.<h3>3. Biodiesel production predominantly uses rapeseed, soybean, and palm oils. Because feedstocks are so varied, ongoing quality monitoring is essential - since the raw material’s quality greatly influencesthe final biodiesel quality.&nbsp;The EN 14105:2024 describes the determination of free and total glycerol contents and mono-, di-, and triglyceride contents in biodiesel by means of gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Owing to these properties, it is extensively applied in packaging, textile fibers, and electronic components. PET is particularly suitable for recycling because it can be melted and reshaped multiple times with minimal loss of performance, and it is easily recognizable by the recycling code “1” (♳). The recycling of PET involves several stages, including collection, sorting, transport, processing, washing, pelletizing, and remanufacturing into new products [1]. However, during these steps, contaminants such as plasticizers, residual monomers, and degradation byproducts may be introduced.&nbsp;The presence of such substances can pose potential risks to both environmental and human health, making the identification and characterization of contaminants in recycled PET essential for evaluating material quality and safety. Among the non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), benzene, acetaldehyde, and limonene are of particular relevance. Benzene is a recognized carcinogen and represents a serious health concern if present in PET. It may form as a degradation product of PET, with the reaction catalyzed by acidic compounds released at high temperatures by polymer impurities such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Poor temperature control or overheating can increase benzene formation as a degradation byproduct. Acetaldehyde, another degradation product of PET generated during bottle manufacturing, can alter the sensory properties of bottled beverages. Limonene, a flavor compound commonly present in soft drinks, may be absorbed into recycled PET and subsequently migrate into packaged beverages, potentially affecting product quality.&nbsp;Gas chromatography coupled to headspace sampling is a fast and simple technique that enables the extraction of volatile and semivolatile compounds from solid and liquid samples without the need for time-consuming sample preparation.&nbsp;In this study, headspace sampling coupled to single quadrupole mass spectrometry was used to assess the overall quantitative performance for analysis of acetaldehyde, benzene, and limonene in recycled PET packaging.&nbsp;The capability of the Thermo Scientific™ ISQ™ 7610 single quadrupole GC–MS of combining the simultaneous acquisition of both single ion monitoring (SIM) and full scan (FS) allowed for sensitive targeted analysis as well as screening of unknown contaminants possibly present in recycled PET bottles.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4>In all experiments, a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/64">TriPlus 500 HS autosampler</a> was coupled to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/486">Thermo Scientific™ TRACE™ 1610 Gas Chromatograph (GC)</a>, configured with a Thermo Scientific™ iConnect™ Split/splitless Injector Module (iConnect-SSL), and connected to an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/484">ISQ 7610 single quadrupole mass spectrometer</a>.&nbsp;The separation of the target analytes was achieved using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/all/products/1751">Thermo Scientific™ Trace GOLD™ TG-624 SILMS capillary column</a>, 60 m x 0.25 mm x 1.4 µm (Part No. 26059-3330). This column provides a low to mid polarity phase with high thermal stability (maximum operating temperatures up to 320 °C) and high inertness, enabling Gaussian peak shapes for analysis of volatile organics. The TriPlus 500 HS autosampler is connected directly to the analytical column, removing the use of a long external transfer line. In this configuration, the SSL injector module is used only for the pneumatic control of the carrier gas and split flow.<h4>Conclusions&nbsp;</h4>The results presented in this work demonstrate that headspace coupled to GC–MS provides a suitable and simple solution for analysis of contaminants in rPET, with no complex sample preparation required.&nbsp;<ul><li>The capability of combining FS with SIM acquisition allows for qualitative and quantitative analysis, increasing confidence in compound identification through spectral comparison with NIST library and allowing for the detection of possible analyte co-elution.&nbsp;</li><li>The TriPlus 500 HS autosampler provides highly repeatable solventless extraction from solid samples with absolute area counts RSD &lt; 5%, permitting reliable and consistent quantitative data.&nbsp;</li><li>The ISQ 7610 single quadrupole GC–MS demonstrates an extended linear response (≥ 4–5 orders of magnitude) with R2 ≥ 0.997, calculated amounts within ± 20% the expected value, and ion ratio deviation ≤ 15% across the calibration curve.&nbsp;</li><li>Sensitivity was demonstrated with overall calculated LOD ≤ 0.03 ng/µL.</li><li>Chromeleon CDS helps ensure data integrity, traceability, and effective data management from instrument control to the final report streamlining analysis and data review processes.</li></ul></div></div></div></div></div></div></section></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>

Large numbers of PET bottles and molded products are used every day in the food and beverage sectors. To recycle these materials safely and reliably, technologies are required that can accurately identify their origin. In practice, however, appearance and conventional physical properties alone are insufficient to distinguish virgin material from recycled material, creating a need for a more reliable identification method.&nbsp;For rapid identification in industrial settings, a method requiring little or no pretreatment is highly desirable. In some cases, nondestructive analysis is also needed to enable subsequent application of other analytical techniques. This article presents a practical approach in which metal catalysts present in PET are detected by EDX (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and used to distinguish material-recycled PET from virgin PET.<h4>Principle and Overview&nbsp;</h4>Metal catalysts such as antimony (Sb) and germanium (Ge) are used in the synthesis of PET resin. These catalyst metals have been reported to be useful indicators of material origin. 1),2) For example, Sb and Ge are frequently detected together in material-recycled PET, whereas only one catalyst metal is detected in chemically recycled PET and virgin PET. This likely reflects the fact that material-recycled PET is derived from a mixture of feedstocks using different catalysts.&nbsp;ICP-AES (ICP optical emission spectrometry) and ICP-MS (ICP mass spectrometry), which are commonly applied to catalyst metal analysis, provide high sensitivity and accuracy. However, they require pretreatment to convert the sample into a solution, thereby lengthening the analytical workflow. By contrast, EDX can measure solid samples directly, making it well-suited to applications requiring rapid results, such as incoming material inspection and in-line analysis in molding plants. Because EDX is non-destructive, it is also suitable for multimodal analytical workflows.&nbsp;On the other hand, some commercially available handheld EDX instruments do not support elements such as Sb and Ge. At the same time, higher-end systems may not offer the specifications or price range needed for industrial deployment. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/en-us/icpms/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=EDX-7200">EDX-7200</a> supports a broad range of elements with excellent cost performance. This article describes the analysis of Sb and Ge in PET using this instrument.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>EDX enables rapid and straightforward elemental analysis without cumbersome sample pretreatment. Previous studies have shown that the presence of Sb and Ge can be used to identify recycled PET. Building on this concept, this article presents a practical analytical approach based on EDX. Using the EDX-7200, which combines broad elemental coverage with excellent cost performance, the proposed method provides a practical tool for rapid on-site identification, quality control, and traceability management. When combined with physical property data and other information, this approach is expected to contribute to the safety assessment and quality assurance of recycled materials, thereby supporting a more advanced circular economy.<h3>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Optimizing lithium-ion battery recycling operations using handheld XRF analysis</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://labrulez.com/pdf/lithium_ion_battery_recycling_handheld_xrf_analysis_an1120_en_4c00477b78.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>The shift to a low-carbon economy and the adoption of electric vehicles will drive an exponential increase in the demand for lithium-ion batteries. As a corollary to this, the International Energy Agency expects the demand for some key commodities to increase significantly over the next two decades: the demand for Copper (Cu) is anticipated to increase by more than 40%; for nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co), by 60-70% each; and for lithium (Li), by nearly 90%.¹ This will translate into increased mining activities and potentially generate larger amounts of deleterious waste.&nbsp;To reduce the environmental impact and limit reliance on scarce commodities associated with economical and geopolitical implications, several countries have implemented regulations regarding producers’ responsibilities.² These regulations contain both incentives and accountability guidelines for lithium-ion battery and electric vehicles manufacturers. Their goal is to facilitate the emergence of a circular economy in which recycling will increasingly contribute to the supply of the strategic raw materials.&nbsp;Lithium-ion batteries are made of multiple components, the most valuable being the cathode that contains between 40 and 70% ³, ⁴ of the total value of the battery, depending on its exact chemistry. HHXRF can measure elements from magnesium (Mg) to uranium (U) in various types of materials such as metals and alloys; non-metallic inorganic materials such as ceramics; or ores or plastics. The determination of oxygenates in motor fuels is an important mandate of the reformulated fuels program. To meet this goal, the United States Environmental Protection Agency approved the use of Oxygenate Flame Ionization Detector (O-FID) analysis in preference to other analyses currently used by the fuels industry.
<h5>Oxygen Selectivity</h5>
Using an Agilent Technologies 8890 GC with custom Wasson-ECE hardware, this instrument rapidly determines oxygenate components in motor fuels. A single injection is introduced onto a capillary column which separates oxygenate components in boiling point order. A cracking reactor converts hydrocarbons into elemental carbon, and oxygenated compounds into carbon monoxide. A methanizer then further converts the carbon monoxide into methane before eluting to the FID detector.
Because hydrocarbons never make it to the detector, this method completely eliminates problems with hydrocarbon interferences.

The LS100B uses inert gases to maintain pressure so that the sample remains in the liquid state at ambient temperature as it passes to the GC for analysis.

Wasson Dynamic Blender for GC (DB302)

The Dynamic Blender is a portable gas blending device that dilutes a sample or a certified standard with a matrix gas of choice.

Gas chromatography (GC) analyses often include trace level detection of components requiring samples or standards at low concentrations. Some analytes are expensive or difficult to purchase at low levels due to reactivity, adsorption, or high molecular weight. Analyses may also cover a wide concentration range, requiring multi-point calibration.
The Wasson-ECE Dynamic Blender (DB302) provides a simple solution to these calibration needs. The Dynamic Blender is a portable gas blending device that dilutes a sample or a certified standard with a matrix gas of choice. One certified standard with concentrations at the upper limit of the desired calibration curve can be diluted to a lower level (&gt;2 orders of magnitude lower) to create a full calibration curve.
An inert flow path and heated bridge eliminate adsorption and condensation problems when blending gas standards that include sulfur, nitrogen, and other reactive compounds.
An on-board flow controller allows the diluent gas flow to be controlled digitally and samples are fed directly to a gas chromatograph. The Dynamic Blender eliminates the need to purchase and store multiple gas cylinders and provides an easy, cost-effective solution for gas phase calibration needs.

The Variable Pressure Sampler (VPS) works in two ways to ensure the precision and accuracy of gas results.

The Variable Pressure Sampler (VPS) works in two ways to ensure the precision and accuracy of gas results. The first method is pressure correction, used to create uniform pressure among all injected samples and the calibration blend. The second method is multi-point calibration, which can deliver a calibration blend to the GC at various pressures.
The VPS pressure correction system performs a multi-step process that ensures samples and calibration blends are at uniform pressures when they are injected.
First, when the calibration blend is run through the GC, the VPS measures and stores the pressure of the calibration blend at the time of injection. Then, as each sample is injected at the stored pressure, the VPS adjusts the pressure of the sample to match the pressure of the calibration blend.
The inject pressure of the sample is reported to Agilent Technologies OpenLAB ChemStation software so calculations and quality control operations can be performed.
Using the VPS, calibration samples can be run at various pressures from a single standard. This decreases overall lab costs while ensuring greater accuracy in results. The multi-point calibration function allows testing for signal linearity at different pressures. With this feature, the user can easily pinpoint the range of pressures which generates the most accurate and meaningful results from the calibration standard.

The LPG Vaporizer uses an innovative, proprietary technique to vaporize liquid samples for injection in an existing GC system. This convenient laboratory system offers flexibility and accuracy for both gas and liquid samples.
The LPG Vaporizer is more convenient than a typical liquid sample valve with more accurate results. All liquid samples are vaporized and run at a constant pressure, eliminating sample density changes that cause errors in liquid phase samples. This ensures sharp, easy-to-read peaks for all samples.
The LPG Vaporizer is built with specially passivated parts for analyzing trace reactive analytes such as sulfurs and oxygenates.
Wasson-ECE&#39;s unique, proprietary vaporization technique produces an even and accurate gas sample. Other vaporizers use tubing with a large volume, causing samples to fractionate when vaporized. This can lead to incomplete sample analysis. The LPG Vaporizer controls the injection volume so that all elements in the liquid sample are vaporized and sent to the GC simultaneously, producing a complete and accurate analysis of the sample.

Wasson Gas Auto-sampler (AS202)

The Gas Auto-sampler (AS202) is a stand-alone device that delivers samples to the GC through a heated bridge, ensuring that samples are injected at the appropriate temperature.

The Gas Auto-sampler (AS202) is a stand-alone device that delivers samples to the GC through a heated bridge, ensuring that samples are injected at the appropriate temperature. The heated pathway is purged with carrier gas between each sample injection, and a vacuum pump ensures an extremely low level of matrix cross-contamination (typically less than 50 ppm).
Samples are loaded into the AS202 oven, which can hold up to twelve 500cc sample cylinders or nine 1L cylinders. The shelves are removable and adjustable and can also be tilted to prevent injection of any residual liquids which then changes the setup to allow for a maximum of eight 500cc or six 1L cylinders.
Samples (1000 psig / 6895 kPa max) are automatically regulated during the purging sequence so the GC injects all samples and calibration blends at atmospheric pressure. The AS202 can also be configured to automate injection of samples that are already at atmospheric pressure.
The table below compares the GC analysis results for 2 mL samples of n-pentane and n-hexane at 100 psig in propane. In the first trial, the sample is sent to the GC from the AS202 at ambient temperature; in the second trial the AS202 heats the samples to 130°C before injection.
