About Melanotan 1
Melanotan 1 (MT-1), also known as afamelanotide, is a synthetic 13-amino-acid analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It acts as an agonist of the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) and stimulates the production of eumelanin, the brown-black pigment involved in skin pigmentation and photoprotection.
Melanotan 1 has been investigated extensively in studies of melanocortin signalling and pigmentation. Afamelanotide is also the active substance in the medicinal product Scenesse, authorised in the European Union for the prevention of phototoxicity in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria.
