Dry battery electrode (DBE) processing relies on the fibrillation of PTFE to form a cohesive network that binds the electrode components together. Understanding and monitoring this process is therefore essential for optimizing electrode manufacturing.

Hereby, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are used to characterize PTFE fibrillation in graphite-based dry electrode mixtures with different binder contents and processing times. XRD enables the detection and quantitative evaluation of PTFE-related structural changes, while DSC provides complementary information on changes in crystallinity through the evolution of melting behavior and fusion enthalpy.

The results demonstrate that both techniques reveal a decrease in PTFE crystallinity with increasing processing time, while showing different sensitivities to the fibrillation process. The complementary information obtained from XRD and DSC highlights their potential for monitoring and understanding structural changes during dry electrode processing.

Key learning objectives:
  • How can PTFE fibrillation be monitored by XRD and DSC
  • What is the correlation between fibrillation, PTFE content and processing time
  • What complementary information on the analysis of the fibrillation process do XRD and DSC provide
