Thermo Fisher Scientific: Gain new insights for environmental, food and forensic investigations: See EA-IRMS in action

Stable isotope analysis can add a valuable new dimension to sample characterization, helping build a more complete picture of origin, authenticity, environmental influences and forensic context.

But how does EA-IRMS work, and what does it take to bring isotope analysis into your laboratory?

Join Thermo Fisher Scientific Product Specialists Dipayan Paul and Meike Kuhlbusch for a practical introduction to elemental analyzer–isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS). Explore where stable isotope analysis can add new insights across food, environmental and forensic investigations, and learn how EA-IRMS can provide a versatile entry point into stable isotope analysis.

Then go into the laboratory to see the Thermo Scientific™ EA IsoLink™ IRMS System in action. Follow the analytical pathway from the instrument and sample analysis through software setup, data acquisition and evaluation, and see what an EA-IRMS workflow looks like in practice.

You’ll also hear from Dr. Oana Botoran, Senior Researcher and Head of the ICSI Analytics Department at ICSI Rm. Vâlcea, who will share her laboratory’s experience with EA-IRMS and examples of how stable isotope measurements are used to address real-world analytical questions in food authenticity, environmental research and forensic investigations.

During this one-hour webinar, including live Q&A, you’ll learn how to:
  • Recognize analytical questions where stable isotope information can add valuable insight
  • Understand the fundamentals of EA-IRMS and where it can be applied
  • Follow an EA-IRMS workflow from sample analysis through data evaluation
  • See practical application examples and hear first-hand experience from an experienced stable isotope laboratory

Presenter: Dr. Oana Botoran (Senior Researcher, Head of ICSI Analytics Department, ICSI Rm. Vâlcea; Lead Scientist in Stable Isotope Applications, ICSI Rm)

Oana uses stable isotope signatures to address real-world analytical questions, from food authenticity and geographical origin to environmental tracing and complex sample characterization. With more than 15 years of experience in stable isotope applications, her work combines IRMS and SNIF-NMR with complementary analytical techniques and chemometric data interpretation. She completed her PhD in Chemistry at POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest, where she investigated stable isotopes as markers of botanical and geographical origin in food products. Her expertise was further developed through a research internship at the Free University of Bozen focused on advanced environmental studies using stable isotope fingerprinting, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Chemistry and Mass Spectrometry dedicated to advanced analytical fingerprinting and food authentication. Today, her research focuses on translating isotope measurements into practical analytical tools for understanding origin, authenticity, environmental influences and the history of different samples.

Presenter: Dr. Dipayan Paul (Product Specialist, EA-IRMS, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Dipayan is an analytical chemist by training and has obtained a PhD in the field of radiocarbon analysis from the Centre for Isotope Research at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Following his Post-Doctoral research work, Dipayan was Scientific Engineer at the Centre for Isotope Research at the University of Groningen, where he was responsible for the instrumentation in the radiocarbon and the stable isotope facility. In 2025 Dipayan joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in Bremen as a Product Specialist supporting the elemental analyzer and gas equilibration IRMS applications.

Presenter: Dr. Meike Kuhlbusch (Product Specialist, EA-IRMS, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

After completing her PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, in collaboration with the Geoscience Center Göttingen, Germany, Meike joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in Bremen in 2021 as a Product Evaluation Specialist and supported development of the Thermo Scientific™ Qtegra™ ISDS Software. Since 2022 Meike has taken on a Product Specialist role focusing on elemental analyzer instrumentation and gas equilibration analysis, developing applications and methods for isotope analysis in a variety of fields.
