In addition to the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, there is a growing interest in researching the potential medicinal benefits of the plant’s other major cannabinoids, which are non-psychoactive. Cannabinoids are very hydrophobic compounds that elute late in reversed-phase chromatography. Since phospholipids also elute in this region, matrix effects and ion suppression can be a concern for the analysis of these compounds. This research presents an LC-MS/MS method for the analysis of 12 cannabinoids and 2 metabolites from whole blood. The objective is to present a simple sample preparation technique utilizing a phospholipid removal cartridge to facilitate the removal of phospholipids, reduce matrix effects, and achieve a good recovery while avoiding the added inconvenience of a dry-down step.
Key Learning Points
- Learn the importance of sample prep in the analysis of cannabinoids
- Recognize the impact that phospholipids have on ion suppression and matrix effects when analyzing cannabinoids by mass spectrometry
- Understand the importance of chromatographic separation of isobaric compounds for LC/MS/MS analysis
Who Should Attend
- This webinar is ideal for analytical scientists, LC-MS/MS users, method developers, laboratory managers, and PFAS testing professionals who are beginning or expanding PFAS analysis across regulated and non-regulated methods. It is designed for those developing new methods, optimizing existing workflows, troubleshooting background contamination, and addressing persistent PFAS interferences.
Presenter: Tim Fassette (Field Application Scientist, Phenomenex)
Tim is a field applications scientist with Phenomenex specializing in clinical and forensic analysis and research. He works directly with new and existing Phenomenex customers to assist in developing new testing methods or improving existing methods for their specific analytical applications. Tim travels all over the country assisting customers in numerous industries such as clinical and forensic toxicology and chemistry, pharmaceutical toxicology, environmental research, clinical research, etc. Prior to working for Phenomenex, Tim worked as a Field Applications Scientist with Thermo Fisher Scientific. Before that, he worked for 20 years in forensic toxicology laboratories, starting off as a bench chemist, later moving into supervising the forensic toxicology unit. Tim started his forensic toxicology career at the Franklin County Coroner’s office in Columbus, OH where he worked for 7 years before moving out to Las Vegas and working as the forensic toxicology supervisor for the Henderson Police Department Forensic Laboratory for 13 years. Tim received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Ohio State University and his master’s degree in forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida, and has been a board-certified toxicologist with the American Board of Forensic Toxicology since 2008. Tim has presented numerous research posters and given platform and workshop talks at numerous local, regional, and international forensic toxicology conferences over the past 20 years and looks forward to continuing this work in the future with Phenomenex.
