Agilent G3488-60150 is an original tandem burner assembly designed to combine flame ionization detection (FID) with sulfur chemiluminescence detection (SCD) in gas chromatography. The tandem FID/SCD configuration allows a single chromatographic separation to provide both a general hydrocarbon response from the FID and a highly selective sulfur response from the SCD.
The assembly is intended for Agilent G3488A / 8355 SCD platforms and serves as a service or configuration component for GC systems equipped for tandem FID/SCD detection. Agilent officially supports tandem SCD and FID operation with the 8355 SCD.
Tandem FID/SCD Principle
In the tandem configuration, column effluent is first monitored by the FID and a portion of the FID exhaust is then directed to the SCD burner.
This allows a single separation to provide two complementary signals:
- FID chromatogram – general response to organic/hydrocarbon compounds
- SCD chromatogram – highly selective response to sulfur-containing compounds
The configuration is particularly useful for monitoring solvent elution and identifying potential coelution between matrix components and sulfur analytes.
Use with Agilent 8355 SCD
The Agilent 8355 SCD uses high-temperature combustion to convert sulfur-containing compounds to sulfur monoxide (SO), which subsequently reacts with ozone to generate a chemiluminescent signal.
Agilent lists the following key capabilities for the 8355 SCD:
- sulfur-specific detection,
- linear and approximately equimolar sulfur response,
- tandem SCD/FID operation,
- picogram-level detection capability.
Tandem Configuration Performance
For the complete 8355 SCD/FID tandem system, Agilent specifies a typical minimum detection limit of:
- <5.0 pg S/s
For the standard dedicated SCD configuration:
- <0.5 pg S/s
The tandem arrangement therefore provides the advantage of simultaneous FID and SCD data while reducing sulfur sensitivity compared with a dedicated SCD burner configuration.
These values are performance specifications for the complete detector system, not for the G3488-60150 replacement burner assembly alone.
Typical Tandem Operating Conditions
Agilent performance-verification conditions for a tandem FID/SCD configuration include:
- FID temperature: 350 °C
- FID H₂ flow: 35 mL/min
- FID air flow: 500 mL/min
- FID N₂ makeup flow: 20 mL/min
- SCD burner temperature: 800 °C
- SCD upper H₂ flow: 40 mL/min
- Lower H₂ flow: not applicable in tandem FID/SCD operation
Actual operating conditions depend on the GC method, detector configuration, and installed hardware.
Advantages of Tandem Detection
The FID/SCD tandem arrangement enables:
- simultaneous hydrocarbon and sulfur detection,
- direct comparison of FID and SCD chromatograms,
- easier identification of solvent peaks,
- recognition of potential coelution,
- broader sample-composition information from a single GC run,
- use of one chromatographic column for both detector signals.
Compatibility
G3488-60150 is intended for tandem configurations involving:
- Agilent G3488A Sulfur Chemiluminescence Detector
- Agilent 8355 SCD
- compatible Agilent GC systems configured for tandem FID/SCD operation
Legacy integrated G3488A/8355 configurations were used with Agilent 7890 Series GC systems, while current 8355 SCD platforms are supported on newer Agilent GC systems depending on configuration.
Exact compatibility should be verified against the GC model, detector position, and SCD configuration before installation.
