The Agilent 1260 Infinity GPC/SEC MDS Viscometer (G7802A) is a viscometric detector designed for gel permeation and size exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC). It extends conventional GPC/SEC analysis by providing viscosity-related information that can be used to characterize polymer molecular weight, intrinsic viscosity, and molecular structure. Agilent lists G7802A as the viscometer detector for its multidetector GPC/SEC platform.
The detector uses a temperature-controlled four-capillary fused-silica bridge based on the fluid-flow equivalent of a Wheatstone bridge. Introduction of the polymer sample creates a pressure imbalance across the bridge, and the resulting differential-pressure change is proportional to the specific viscosity. This direct differential measurement provides high sensitivity for dilute polymer solutions.
When used with Agilent GPC/SEC Software, the viscometer data can support calculation of molecular-weight and intrinsic-viscosity distributions using Universal Calibration, as well as polymer branching characterization. The detector can also form part of a multidetector GPC/SEC configuration incorporating refractive-index and light-scattering detection.
