20 years of PFAS analysis, a long story that brought us to rule them

While we started testing PFAS in just water, today we test a wide variety of different matrices, each with its own regulations, targets and limits.
What do we mean when we talk about PFAS? Which technologies are involved in PFAS analysis other than LC and GC? Which instruments operate at the proper sensitivity?
Your mass detector is the starting point to understanding which analytical approach you should pursue. Here follows a practical approach guideline for PFAS analysis, basing the approach on your detector sensitivity.
Results: Once you know your instrument, you have all the information you need to start solving the PFAS emergency at analytical level.
A single run to analyze all PFAS together? Separate runs to maximize sensitivity? Whatever your best practice, there’s a way to make it happen.
Discussion & Conclusions: How can we easily develop an analytical method for PFAS? We’ll discuss what is needed to evaluate your analytical approach, based on the sensitivity of your MS detector.
Do you own an older instrument or a high-resolution mass spectrometer? Then you’ll need a different approach compared to people who are using a latest-generation triple quadrupole. We’ll discuss both approaches, outlining the reasons behind our choices, ensuring that your analysis allows you to reach the required sensitivity.
What about PFAS that are best suited to analysis by GC? We’re well-prepared for this as well, and we’ll show you our most advanced PFAS GC method.

The testing of PFAS in environmental and commercial products has become an increasingly more ubiquitous globally. The high fluorophilicity of many commonly tested PFAS in conjunction with their ionic nature can result in prominent adsorption onto un-deactivated surfaces and micelle formation in solution. If unaccounted for, these effects can lead to erroneous results and shorten shelf-life of standards. This poster will discuss how specific characteristics of PFAS compounds can lead to complications in the storage and handling of certified reference material and provides recommendations to mitigate these difficulties.

The analysis of PFAS compounds in environmental samples has traditionally focused on ionic, non-volatile PFAS analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Many PFAS compounds, such as the fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH), are neutral and semi-volatile and can be better analyzed by GC-MS/MS. While no EPA methods have been published, labs have analyzed these compounds with a variety of preparation techniques and column selections, including liquid/liquid extractions, headspace, and sorbent-based extractions on both volatile and semi-volatile type columns.
In this presentation we’ll explore a combined 8270/FTOH method, focusing on small volume liquid/liquid extractions and GC-MS/MS using the new RMX-5Sil MS column. This workflow would allow labs to incorporate neutral PFAS compounds into their existing semi-volatile workflows, streamlining laboratory operations.
