The Multidimensional Chromatography (MDC) Workshop
The Multidimensional Chromatography (MDC) Workshop

The Multidimensional Chromatography (MDC) Workshop draws experts in this exciting field to share and discuss their research. The informal workshop also provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in multidimensional chromatography to learn more about this unique analytical technique. Research topics include advancements in multidimensional chromatography technology and applications of this highly selective chromatographic approach.

The first 9 editions of this workshop took place at Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Toronto, Canada. They were organized by Prof. Eric Reiner. The workshop developed from a small group of experts brainstorming about multidimensional chromatography challenges to a vast workshop allowing the sharing of important work and networking between experts and users in the field.

The 10th workshop was held in Liege, Belgium at the University of Liege. For the first time, focus group discussions were held on major topics to discuss the major challenges in the field. The 11th workshop took place in Honolulu at Chaminade University. It was again an opportunity to discuss the upcoming developments in the field.

The 12th and 13th workshops took place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These versions of the workshop were exciting because they incorporated the first poster sessions ever to take place. In 2021 and until present, two student poster awards were initiated in Multidimensional GC and Multidimensional LC sponsored by the ACS Subdivision of Chromatography and Separations Chemistry (SCSC), which continues to present. In 2022 only, a poster award was also given for Industry Research and Development by CerTech.

The 14th MDCW in 2023 was held in person in Liege, Belgium and incorporated a live stream option. Notable events in 2023 included the first in-person poster session and the first session held on ASTM method development for GCxGC methods.

The Multidimensional Chromatography Workshop has a reputation for incorporating new and exciting activities within the conference each year. The 15th MDCW will be no exception to that trend. We hope to see you in person in Los Angeles to celebrate our first ever West Coast version of the conference!

The 16th MDCW returned to Liège, Belgium, as an in-person event, bringing together the multidimensional chromatography community for an intensive three-day program. The workshop featured keynote lectures, flash presentations, poster sessions, and interactive focus group discussions addressing current challenges and future directions in multidimensional separations. The scientific program highlighted cutting-edge developments across GC×GC, LC×LC, SFC, and hyphenated MS workflows, with strong emphasis on real-world applications including environmental analysis, food chemistry, forensics, and emerging contaminants such as PFAS.

The 17th MDCW was held in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA, expanding the workshop’s global reach while maintaining its highly interactive and community-driven format. The event brought together researchers, students, and industry professionals to discuss the latest developments in multidimensional chromatography, including GC×GC, LC×LC, and advanced hyphenated analytical techniques. The program featured keynote lectures, flash presentations, poster sessions, and open discussions, fostering direct exchange between leading experts and emerging scientists.
