However, the intentional or accidental adulteration of spices with cheaper or foreign substances poses significant risks to both food quality and consumer safety. Adulteration practices often aim to increase product volume, enhance visual appeal, or mimic authentic flavors, compromising the integrity of the final product.1Common adulteration practices include substituting genuine plant materials with cheaper or visually similar ones, using inferior plant species or parts, and mixing with fillers such as corn starch, bran, or sawdust. Some products are also adulterated with chemicals to enhance flavor, inorganic substances such as sand, chalk, or red brick powder, or illegal dyes such as Sudan dyes and rhodamine B to intensify&nbsp;color.1–4&nbsp;Current tools for detecting adulteration in herbs and spices face several challenges. Sampling across complex supply chains often lacks consistency, making it difficult to obtain representative samples.5 The chemical and physical complexity of sample matrices, combined with natural variation among species and origins, complicates data interpretation.5&nbsp;In&nbsp;ground or powdered spices, the original plant structures are lost, making it difficult to visually or morphologically identify adulterants, particularly when they are fine or physically similar to the genuine&nbsp;material.6 An <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8700+LDIR">Agilent 8700 Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) chemical imaging system</a> (Figure&nbsp;1) was used in this study to detect spice adulteration through the integration of infrared spectroscopy and&nbsp;microscopy<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4>Agilent Clarity software: To evaluate the 8700 LDIR's capability in distinguishing genuine spices from common adulterants, a series of pure and adulterated samples were prepared and analyzed using the system's automated Particle Analysis (PA) workflow.<h4>Results and discussion&nbsp;</h4><h5>Identification of pure spices (turmeric)&nbsp;</h5>To verify the 8700 LDIR and the user&nbsp;generated library in identifying particles of varying sizes, shapes, and counts, the pure turmeric sample was analyzed as an "unknown". Turmeric sample identification demonstrated high spectral matching accuracy. Within the selected analysis area, 74&nbsp;particles were detected and 70&nbsp;particles (94.6%) were matched to the turmeric reference spectra in the custom library. Notably, 64 particles achieved Hit Quality Index (HQI) values exceeding 0.8, indicating strong spectral correlation and high confidence in the identification data (Figure 2).<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This study demonstrates the suitability of the Agilent 8700 LDIR chemical imaging system with Agilent Clarity software as an effective tool for detecting adulteration in ground spices. Using the automated Particle Analysis (PA) workflow, the system quickly and reliably distinguished turmeric from both organic (corn starch) and inorganic (sand) adulterants based on their distinct IR spectral signatures.&nbsp;Differentiating between chemically similar spices remains challenging due to overlapping IR profiles. However, the 8700 LDIR system's ability to build custom spectral libraries offers flexibility for targeted authentication, allowing laboratories to adapt the system to their evolving analytical needs.&nbsp;A key advantage of the 8700 LDIR method is the speed and simplicity of sample preparation—dry powders can be analyzed directly on low-e slides without solvents or extraction. By combining the high-throughput automated PA workflow with integrated imaging, the 8700 LDIR provides a practical, time-saving solution for routine analysis in food testing&nbsp;laboratories.<h3>2. Shimadzu: Observation of the Automotive Cylindrical Lithium-Ion Battery “4680” Using a Micro-Focus X-ray CT System</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_01060_en_5e744626ad.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul><h4>User Benefits</h4><ul><li>The internal structure of the “4680” cylindrical lithium-ion battery for automotive use, which is a market trend, can be observed nondestructively.&nbsp;</li><li>Electrode placement and bonding condition can be verified, which is useful for product quality inspection.</li></ul>In recent years, with the proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs), the development of high-performance, low-cost automotive batteries has become an urgent priority. Among these, the cylindrical lithium-ion battery “4680” has attracted particular attention. Compared with the conventional “2170,” the “4680” is larger, and its energy density per cell is increased, thereby extending vehicle range. In addition, the adoption of a tab-less structure reduces internal resistance, improving charge/discharge efficiency and thermal management performance, while simplification of the manufacturing process is expected to reduce cost. Owing to these characteristics, the “4680” is drawing attention across both industry and academia as a core technology for next-generation EVs. Meanwhile, lithium-ion batteries are always subject to concerns about the risk of ignition and explosion due to internal short circuits or foreign matter inclusion. Because X-ray CT enables nondestructive testing (NDT) with three-dimensional visualization of internal structures, it is possible to detect fine defects such as electrode misalignment, separator damage, and foreign matter inclusion.&nbsp;This article introduces a case study in which the cylindrical lithium-ion battery “4680” for automotive applications was observed using the microfocus <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=inspeXio+7000">X-ray CT system inspeXio 7000</a> (Fig. 1).<h4>Conclusion</h4>We presented a case study of imaging the cylindrical lithium-ion battery “4680” using a microfocus X-ray CT system. By nondestructively visualizing its three-dimensional structure, it is possible to obtain important information on the battery’s internal structure, such as the arrangement of electrodes and their bonding state. Waters Corporation: Residual Dynabeads Detection with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2190">Aura+</a></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720009096_en_aeb7e4288f.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Autologous cell therapies have seen explosive growth as evidenced by the recent landmark FDA approvals of two CAR-T cell therapies, Yescarta® and Kymriah®. 1 Dynabeads™ are commonly used in cell therapy manufacturing process to expand and activate CAR-T cells.2 CD3/CD28 Dynabeads specifically are one of the leading approved GMP expression beads for T cell therapies and are key to achieving the potency required of these novel medicines. Dynabeads are also efficiently removed from the final product to ensure final purity. However, residual CD3/CD28 beads present a significant risk patients’ safety and therefore are generally kept below a widely accepted but not yet regulatory controlled limit of 100 residual beads per 3,000,000 cells.3–4&nbsp;Residual bead analysis is currently performed with manual hemocytometry that uses light microscopy and manual counting. However, manual hemocytometry is prone to human error, which leads to significant bead undercounting because it is incredibly difficult to find and differentiate between Dynabeads and cells in a sample, making residual bead counting one of the most challenging cell therapy lot release assays. Other traditional cell and subvisible analysis tools, including flow cytometers, also undercount beads and cannot differentiate residual Dynabeads from cells and other subvisible particles.&nbsp;In this technical note, we show step-by-step how Aura CL and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2190">Aura+</a> enable fast, accurate, sensitive, and specific residual Dynabead detection in a concentrated cell therapy product. Powered by backgrounded membrane imaging (BMI) to characterize the entire cell therapy particle population and side illumination membrane imaging (SIMI) to specifically detect Dynabeads, Aura® CL and Aura®+ are the first and only tailored solutions to find and count these hard to detect contaminants.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Analysis of the cell therapy sample on Aura CL or Aura+ begins with the BMI well image, where sharp contrast, high resolution optics provide the landscape to count and size all the particles in your cell therapy product. SIMI imaging, which is run at the same time as BMI, enables the differentiation of biologic vs. non-biologic particles which is essential to this application. Figures 2 and 3 capture how BMI detects all particles present in a cell therapy sample, while SIMI mode selects for particles of higher refractive index contrast. In BMI mode, cells, Dynabeads, and mixtures of the two were all easily visible. However, in SIMI mode, only the residual Dynabeads were detected both in the standard high-throughput 4x mode and in the 10x high magnification mode. This is essential for specific detection of residual Dynabeads given their low abundance in a highly concentrated cell sample as shown in Figure 4. We determined that the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of Dynabeads is &lt;1 bead/well (or 18 beads/mL of sample), well below the hemacytometer residual bead detection rate of 1 bead per 10,000 cells. Additionally, the bead counts in our dilution series exhibited a linear relationship, measuring an R2 of 0.98. Using Aura CL or Aura+ for residual Dynabead detection provides greater accuracy and higher-throughput in counting compared to the cumbersome and error prone currently used methods. Resolving false positive counts can be easily rectified by measuring the particles at higher magnification, where single Dynabeads identity can be confirmed by size. Aura CL and Aura+ deliver the only automated way of measuring single Dynabeads in concentrated cell therapy solutions, while also offering built in orthogonal confirmation through various objectives and light sources.

The concentrator's efficient trap cooling design reduces sample cycle time by as much as 14% over the previous model. Combined with its 84-position soil and water autosampler, the result is more samples tested per 12-hour period. An innovative moisture control system (MCS) improves water vapor removal, thereby reducing peak interference and increasing GC column life span. In addition to other refinements, the Atomx XYZ incorporates a precision-machined valve manifold block to reduce potential leak sources and ensure the system is both reliable and robust.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This study demonstrates the capability of the Teledyne LABS Tekmar Atomx XYZ P&amp;T concentrator to process low‑level ECH in drinking water samples, with detection performed using an Agilent&nbsp;8890 GC and Agilent 5977C GC/MSD. The linearity of the calibration curve from 10 to 500&nbsp;ppt passed method requirements, including verification of the initial calibration curve. The 10&nbsp;ppt standard passed the lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) within ± 50% of its true value, while all other calibration levels (&gt; LLOQ) passed within ± 30%. The blank following the highest point in the calibration curve passed method carryover requirements by remaining below half pf the LLOQ. Furthermore, the application proved robust during a long‑term study with 40 samples of a 30&nbsp;ppt ECH standard, achieving 4.3% precision and 92% accuracy of the&nbsp;recovery.<h3>2. Smoke from these fires contains chemically complex mixtures of pollutants that can persist in the atmosphere and impact air quality over large geographic regions. Traditional sampling methods often emphasize particulate-bound compounds, while gas-phase organics—critical for understanding secondary organic aerosol formation—may be underrepresented. Thermal desorption was evaluated as a modern alternative capable of capturing both gas- and particle-phase compounds.To determine optimal sampling conditions, multiple sorbent tube configurations were compared using a mixture of 41 standard VOC and PAH compounds across various concentration levels. Performance metrics included analyte recovery, linearity, and detection limits. The results showed that multibed sorbent tubes significantly expanded analyte coverage and improved retention of combustion-related species. Additionally, factorial studies investigating conditioning and desorption parameters revealed that reducing temperature or duration did not improve artefact removal or analyte recovery, highlighting the importance of robust standardized conditions.The methodology was further evaluated through storage stability trials and real smoke emission sampling experiments. Samples demonstrated stable analyte retention for up to 35 days, supporting the suitability of TD sampling for field studies requiring delayed analysis. Validation experiments involving combustion of white spruce and analysis by <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=6&amp;search=unity-xr">TD</a>-GC×GC-ToFMS produced highly detailed chromatographic data, identifying over 1 600 peaks per sample. Approximately 78 % of detected compounds fell within the C6–C14 range, while 19 of the 41 target analytes—including all PAHs and BTEX species—were successfully identified.Overall, the study confirmed that thermal desorption combined with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography offers a powerful approach for characterizing complex combustion emissions. The optimized multibed sorbent strategy and validated sampling workflow enable more accurate profiling of smoke-derived VOCs and PAHs, providing valuable insights into air quality impacts and atmospheric chemistry processes associated with large-scale wildfires.<h3>3. But as the rubber wears, it mixes with mineral particles from the road to generate “tire and road wear particles” (TRWP). TRWP matter is known to be a type of microplastic that causes marine plastic pollution.&nbsp;TRWP can contain a large variety of substances, such as vulcanizing accelerators, antioxidants (such as 6PPD), and plasticizers, and when released into the environment, TRWP substances can be harmful to ecosystems. Therefore, to reduce the quantity of TRWP matter released, it is important to increase the wear resistance of tires. To achieve this, an assessment of the base materials and additives in rubber is essential. Among additives, vulcanizing accelerators in particular improve the physical properties of tires by promoting sulfur vulcanization reactions.&nbsp;This article analyzes the base materials in tire rubber and additives, such as vulcanizing accelerators and other sulfur components.<h4>Analysis Process Flow</h4>A pyrolysis gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (Py-GC-MS) system was used, as specified in the international standard ISO/TS 21396. 1) Simply placing cut-up samples in a sample cup (Fig. 1) enables direct analysis of samples without pretreatment. The analytical process flow isindicated in Fig. 2.<ul><li>Pyrolyzer Unit: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=42&amp;search=EGA%2FPY-3030D">EGA/PY-3030D</a> Multi-Shot Pyrolyzer AS-1020E Auto-Shot Sampler (Frontier Laboratories Ltd.)</li><li>GC-MS: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMS-QP2020+NX">GCMS-QP2020 NX</a></li></ul><h4>Inferring Polymers</h4>The evolved gas analysis (EGA-MS) method uses pyrolyzer (Py) and mass spectrometer (MS) units linked via a deactivated metal tube to heat samples to continuously increasing temperatures to generate gases from the samples, which are then detected by the MS.&nbsp;Samples (0.2 mg) of tire rubber fragments were placed in sample cups, with fiberglass wool inserted to prevent them from dropping, and then analyzed. Analysis conditions are indicated in Table 1.&nbsp;Thermograms obtained from that analysis are shown in Fig. 5. Originally, the horizontal axis of the thermogram is the time, but the heating temperature of the pyrolyzer can be calculated from the time. Peaks from polymer thermal decomposition products appear across the range of 370 to 500 °C. The average MS spectrum for that peak range and the results from inferring the polymer are shown in Fig. 6. Based on the F-Search EGA-MS Polymer Library (Frontier Laboratories Ltd.), the base material in the tire rubber was inferred to be styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR).&nbsp;Enlarging the thermogram shows a shoulder peak between 240 and 370 °C. Assuming that the shoulder peak originated from an additive, a thermal desorption analysis was carried out with the temperature range from 60 to 370 °C.<h4>Conclusion</h4>By combining FPD (S) that selectively and sensitively detects sulfur compounds, with Py-GC-MS, sulfur compounds in tire rubber were easily detected and simultaneously analyzed qualitatively by the MS.<h3>4. Additionally, these measurements are essential for regulatory compliance, as they ensure adherence to stringent government and industrial standards.&nbsp;Operational efficiency of gas-using industries is also impacted by accurate natural gas measurement. By obtaining trustworthy and precise data, operators can optimize their processes, reduce waste, and ultimately enhance the overall efficiency of their operations. Furthermore, the measurement of natural gas plays a significant role in safety assurance and environmental protection. By accurately measuring methane content and detecting any irregularities in the natural gas stream, operators can address potential safety hazards and mitigate environmental issues, thereby promoting safer and more sustainable practices within the industry.&nbsp;Raman spectroscopy is an exceptionally powerful tool that can effectively address the myriad challenges associated with natural gas measurements. This innovative approach eliminates the need for traditional sampling systems or loops, thereby significantly reducing both the cost and operational disruptions typically associated with gas sampling.&nbsp;The versatility of the MarqMetrix All-In-One X analyzer is underscored by its ability to operate reliably across a wide range of conditions, performing consistently under varying temperature and pressure regimes. Moreover, the hazardous location configuration enhances the instrument’s capabilities even further, enabling the analyzer to function safely and effectively in some of the harshest and most hazardous operating environments. This robust configuration ensures that accurate and reliable natural gas measurements can be obtained even in extreme conditions, providing a critical tool for maintaining operational efficiency, safety, and regulatory&nbsp;compliance.<h4>Results&nbsp;</h4>The spectra produced, along with the reference data obtained from the certificates of analysis accompanying the gas cylinders, were imported into SOLO software. Using this dataset, Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression models were constructed for each of the hydrocarbons present in the natural gas standards. The models underwent rigorous optimization processes, focusing on variable selection, determination of latent variables, and appropriate preprocessing techniques.&nbsp;Variable selection emerged as a crucial step in the modeling process due to the significant covariance observed among the different hydrocarbons within the natural gas standards. By carefully selecting specific regions of the spectra that correspond exclusively to the hydrocarbons of interest in each model, the independence and relevance of the information utilized in the model were significantly enhanced. This careful selection process ensures that the PLS regression models are robust and accurate, leading to more reliable predictions and analyses of the hydrocarbon content in the natural gas&nbsp;samples.&nbsp;Given the lower concentration and relatively lower intensities of the butane and pentane peaks, a wider range of variables were selected to build the models.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In conclusion, the MarqMetrix All-In-One X Process Raman Analyzer along with a Thermo Scientific™ MarqMetrix™ FlowCell™ Sampling Optic, both developed to be operated in ATEX Zone 0, proved to be a highly effective solution for collecting and analyzing the spectra of natural gas standards. The resulting data produced robust PLS regression models for each hydrocarbon component. Careful variable selection and optimization enhanced the independence and relevance of the models, resulting in accurate and reliable predictions. The performance of these models demonstrated excellent linearity, resolution, and sensitivity across the range of natural gas components. This study underscores the viability and applicability of Raman spectroscopy, coupled with advanced chemometric modeling, for precise and reliable natural gas analysis in hazardous&nbsp;environments.

In semiconductor applications, Ti is widely used as a sputtering target for thin-film deposition, where even trace levels of impurities can negatively affect film uniformity, electrical properties, and device reliability. In aerospace applications, Ti is valued for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, making it an ideal material for engine components and structural parts. However, any impurities can compromise the mechanical integrity and diminish the long-term performance of components, especially when operating under extreme conditions.Ensuring the reliability and functionality of Ti in these demanding environments requires precise quantification of trace impurities in the raw material. Triple quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-QQQ) provides robust suppression of spectral interferences and ultra-low detection limits (DLs), enabling accurate determination of impurities at or below the 1 mg/kg (ppm) level in the solid. This level of sensitivity is particularly important for quality control (QC) of high-purity Ti, where conventional techniques such as XRF, ICP-OES, and GD-MS lack the sensitivity and DLs.&nbsp;For unrivalled interference reduction using reactive cell gases, Agilent ICP-QQQ instruments include two unit mass (1 u) quadrupole mass filters, Q1 and Q2.1 Q1 is positioned before the collision/reaction cell (CRC) to select which ions enter the cell for reaction with the cell gas. Q2 filters ions that exit the cell before they pass to the detector. This tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) operation allows for unmatched control of reaction chemistry in the CRC, making the technique useful for handling intense spectral interferences, including polyatomic, doubly charged ion (M++), isobaric, and peak overlap interferences.&nbsp;Using the newly developed <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> featuring a Dual-Cell System (DCS) CRC and equipped with an optional m-lens, analysts can confidently analyze Ti matrix samples and verify material purity over extended measurement periods. The m-lens is designed with an optimized geometry that minimizes background signals from easily ionized elements that can deposit on interface components during long runs. This feature enables the instrument to maintain high-power, matrix-tolerant plasma conditions while achieving ultralow background equivalent concentrations (BECs), which is critical for ppt-level impurity analysis. Operating the DCS with a suitable cell gas effectively controls spectral interferences from Ti-based species (Ti²+ and TiO+ ) that impact elements like sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). Together with the m‑lens, this approach ensures accurate measurement of trace elemental impurities, enabling compliance within stringent industry standards. The effectiveness of the m‑lens in minimizing background signals and enabling ppt‑level impurity analysis under robust plasma conditions has also been demonstrated in high-matrix applications using ICP‑QQQ.2, 3 In addition to interference control, the 9500 ICP-QQQ system’s robustness and reproducibility make it well suited for routine analysis in both research and production settings. This capability supports the continued advancement of high-tech applications that rely on ultra-clean titanium.In this study, a 200 ppm Ti solution prepared from a high-purity Ti powder was used to represent a typical sample encountered in advanced material analysis. The performance of the 9500 ICP-QQQ for quantifying trace impurities, including Na, Mg, Cu, and Zn, in a high Ti matrix was assessed through spike-recovery experiments and long-term stability tests.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ with m-lens for the ultra-trace analysis of impurity metals in high-purity titanium. By applying optimized reaction gas conditions and mass-shift techniques, spectral interferences from Ti-based species such as Ti²+ and TiO+ were successfully mitigated, enabling accurate quantification of elements like Mg, Cu, and Zn.&nbsp;The method achieved limits of quantification in the sub-ppm range for the undiluted Ti digestion solution and maintained stable ISTD signals over extended measurement periods. Spike recovery tests confirmed high accuracy and reproducibility, with most elements showing recoveries within ±10% and RSDs below 3%.&nbsp;These results confirm that the 9500 ICP-QQQ is a robust and reliable tool for quality control of high-purity Ti, supporting its critical applications in semiconductor and aerospace industries where impurity levels must be strictly controlled.<h3>2. Over the past decade, its adoption has enabled tighter control of critical process parameters (CPPs), offering early indicators of process performance to ensure consistency and improve product quality. Raman spectroscopy leverages the unique vibrational signatures of molecules, allowing for highly specific detection even in complex biological matrices. This enables simultaneous, real-time monitoring of multiple CPPs, including nutrient concentrations, metabolic by-products, and cell density. As a result, users gain deep, real-time insights into cellular metabolism and can implement more dynamic, adaptive feeding strategies based on metabolic network understanding.&nbsp;Previous studies have demonstrated the negative impact of high lactate on cell health and quantity and quality of titer produced.² In this study, we demonstrate the successful implementation of process Raman analyzer for simultaneous multi-component feedback control of glucose and lactate in a bioreactor. By continuously monitoring both analytes, the feedback control loop dynamically maintained a constant total carbon concentration (glucose + lactate) at a setpoint of 2 g/L.&nbsp;This advanced carbon-source-based control strategy ensured that cellular metabolic demands were met while promoting lactate consumption toward the end of the run. As a result, lactate accumulation was significantly reduced, leading to substantial improvements in titer yield, product quality, and cell viability compared to standard bolus feeding strategies (Figure 2).The outcomes of this work underscore the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2233">Thermo Scientific™ MarqMetrix™ All-In-One Process Raman Analyzer </a>as a key Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tool-enabling real-time, multi-analyte control for any biomanufacturer seeking to engage in intelligent, automated biomanufacturing.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4><h5>1. Unmatched Real-Time Control Capability:&nbsp;</h5>Maintaining a constant total carbon concentration (glucose + lactate) of 2 g/L in dynamic bioreactor environments demands precise, simultaneous analyte monitoring. The MarqMetrix All-In-One Process Raman Analyzer delivers near real-time, high-fidelity data every two minutes, empowering advanced control strategies that are simply not feasible with conventional technologies.
