Shimadzu: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/TP_093_Analysis_of_PFAS_in_Water_Final_05292024_8fa9fcb27d.pdf"><strong>Analysis of Volatile PFAS in Water Using Head-Space Solid Phase Microextraction- Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME GC/MS)</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Poster / <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/companies/296"><strong>ASMS</strong></a>&nbsp;</li></ul><p><strong>Introduction</strong>&nbsp;</p><p>Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are environmental pollutants with recognized health and environmental concerns due to their probable toxicity, persistence, and ubiquitousness throughout the environment, and consumer and industrial products. PFAS encompass a large family of chemicals with varying physicochemical properties. These properties not only affect their toxicity and environmental fate, but also complicates chemical analysis.</p><p>In this work, a Head-Space Solid Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME GCMS) analytical method was developed to analyze six classes of volatile PFAS in water. This HS-SPME method presents the advantage of simplifying sample extraction and handling for the analysis of volatile PFAS in water, hence, minimizing operational costs, potential errors, and risk of sample-cross contamination.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>This study demonstrated the use of a Shimadzu GC/MS-QP2020 NX single quadrupole instrument configured with the AOC-6000 Plus multifunctional autosampler and an automated head space solid phase microextraction unit for measurement of volatile PFAS compounds in water. Linear calibration curves were obtained for all compounds (R 2 ≥ 0.993 and RF %RSD &lt; 20 %). The HS-SPME GC/MS-QP2020 NX method demonstrated qualitative and quantitative capability of analyzing PFAS compounds.</p><h4><strong>2. Thermo Fisher Scientific: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_003028_gc_ms_isq_epa_vocs_an003028_na_en_7646797ef5.pdf"><strong>Analysis of volatile organic compounds in drinking water according to U.S. EPA Method 524.4</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Goal</strong></p><p>Demonstration of an analytical method that meets the requirements outlined in U.S. EPA Method 524.4 for the quantitation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water, using the Teledyne LABS Tekmar Lumin Purge and Trap (P&amp;T) concentrator paired with the AQUATek LVA autosampler system along with a Thermo Scientific™ ISQ™ 7610 MS system coupled with a Thermo Scientific™ TRACE™ 1610 gas chromatograph (GC) and Thermo Scientific™ Chromeleon™ Chromatography Data System (CDS). These compounds are regulated in drinking water, and laboratories follow regulations including U.S. EPA Method 524.2.1 A previous application note described U.S. EPA Method 524.2,2,3 which is the most common method for VOC water testing in the USA. U.S. EPA Method 524.4 is an updated method that allows for nitrogen to be used as the purge gas, thus reducing helium consumption, and is now being more widely used. Targeting 75 VOCs, this method differs by offering more method parameter flexibility but stricter quality control, including the stringent calculation of the minimum reporting level for evaluating calibration checks.</p><p>Implementing U.S. EPA Method 524.4 can present multiple challenges for laboratories. Striking a balance between optimized method conditions and meeting the acceptance criteria, like detection limit requirements for various compound concentrations, is pivotal. Another major hurdle is managing the water matrix to minimize GC-MS system water introduction, which could lead to detrimental effects and delay sample reporting, thereby increasing public safety risks. Ultimately, maintaining consistency in test results to avoid sample reanalysis is crucial. Another factor for laboratories to consider is the fluctuating cost of helium, which is the analytical gas of choice for this analysis.<br>Reducing the use of helium—a limited resource—will enable the laboratory to reduce operational costs and increase profitability.</p><p>The following evaluation describes the use of the ISQ 7610 GC-MS system coupled with a TRACE 1610 GC with the Thermo Scientific™ HeSaver-H<sub>2</sub>Safer™ split/splitless injector and Teledyne LABS Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T concentrator paired with the AQUATek LVA autosampler for U.S. EPA Method 524.4.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>The combined solution of the TRACE 1610 GC coupled with the ISQ 7610 system and the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T concentrator with the AQUATek LVA autosampler system successfully addresses the challenges of VOC analysis and provides a robust, sensitive solution needed for ensuring maximized sample throughput and regulatory method compliance for U.S. EPA Method 524.4.</p><ul><li>Excellent linearity for all compounds was demonstrated with the linear regression (r²≥0.995) of the calibration response factors passing all method requirements.</li><li>MDL and precision for seven 0.5 ppb standards showed no interference from excessive water and produced very reproducible results.</li><li>The precision for n=30 samples over 245 injections displayed &lt;30% RSD for all compounds as the method requires and an average recovery of 91%.</li><li>Utilizing HeSaver-H<sub>2</sub>Safer technology reduced helium consumption for the method by 4 times, which provides a significant cost savings.</li></ul><h4><strong>3. Waters Corporation: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720008298_en_db4158391c.pdf"><strong>Extractables Analysis of Nasal Spray Devices Using Gas Chromatography and High- Resolution Mass Spectrometry With Soft Ionization</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Due to concern about the safety of components from plastic, it is crucial to screen for and identify potential extractables and leachables (E&amp;L) in pharmaceutical packaging and medical devices. For volatile, and semi-volatile compounds, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with electron ionization (EI) is typically used. Compounds are determined using scientific libraries; however, where compounds are not listed or where the sensitivity of EI-MS is not sufficient, the identification process becomes challenging.</p><p>Here, we describe an E&amp;L screening experiment using gas chromatography and a quadrupole time of flight high-resolution mass spectrometer (QToF-HRMS) with atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) for soft ionization. A data independent acquisition (DIA) strategy is utilized to aid screening and elucidation which are combined in a screening software solution.</p><p><strong>Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>GC-QToF MS with APGC as an orthogonal technique to LC-QToF-MS allows for comprehensive compound coverage with increased sensitivity compared to typical EI techniques</li><li>The UNIFI™ application within the waters_connect™ platform provides customized workflows to simplify screening and structural elucidation in complex datasets</li><li>The Xevo™ G3 QTof Mass Spectrometer enables confident identification of E&amp;L components in complex matrices through novel ion optics and detection system which maximize transmission</li><li>Soft ionization using the APGC™ source allows for the detection of molecular ions from which elemental compositions can be derived to aid compound identification and confirmation&nbsp;</li><li>MSE, a data independent acquisition, increases confidence in identifications when screening against a library and provides additional information to aid structural elucidation</li></ul><p><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></p><p>When undertaking E&amp;L screening analyses it is important to use a range of analytical techniques to account for different compound chemistries. GC-QToF MS with APGC as an orthogonal technique to LC-QToF-MS allowed for comprehensive compound coverage with increased sensitivity compared to typical EI techniques. Due to the soft ionization of APGC, the intact molecular ion is often present in the spectra. This combined with a data independent acquisition, MS<sup>E</sup> mode, utilizes full spectral acquisition of the accurate mass information of both precursor and fragment ions.</p><p>This approach boosts confidence in component identifications when screening against an MS/MS library, while minimizing false positives. For instance, in the LC-QToF-MS there were just under 40 potential compounds matches in sample E48 after considering factors such as retention time match, mass accuracy below 3 ppm, and the presence of at least one fragment ion. A further 38 compound matches in sample E48 were tentatively identified using GC-QToF MS with APGC, with mass accuracy below 3 ppm, and the presence of at least one fragment ion.</p><p>MS<sup>E</sup> data also aids in the structural elucidation of unknown substances by utilizing accurate mass and corresponding fragment ions, facilitating comprehensive characterization. This data increases confidence in identifications of components and assists with structural elucidation of unknowns to ultimately aid full characterization. For example an unknown with protonated m/z 284.2703 was tentatively identified as a N-(2-(1-piperazinyl)ethyl)decanamide (mass error 2.33 ppm) by the software.</p><p>For the extractables analysis of nasal sprays the UNIFI application within the waters_connect platform provided SST benchmarking, screening against a library, summary plots to identify trends, filtering of AET levels, binary compare mode to isolate relevant unknowns, and a Discovery Tool for elucidation of unknowns.</p><h4><strong>4. Agilent Technologies: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_voc_rubber_gasket_extracts_gc_msd_5994_7777en_agilent_6a0a6bf7d0.pdf"><strong>Analysis of Volatile Compounds Identified in Rubber Gasket Extracts Using GC/MSD and High-Resolution GC/Q-TOF</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Chemicals that are part of polymeric container closure systems (CCS) and drug delivery systems have the potential to migrate into drug products during manufacturing, storage, transport, and delivery, and must be identified in the final products to ensure their safety.</p><p>This application note presents a rubber gasket extractables study using a unit mass resolution gas chromatography/mass selective detector (GC/MSD) and a high-resolution gas chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight (GC/Q-TOF) mass spectrometer to establish a process for identifying GC-amenable extractables and leachable (E&amp;L) compounds.</p><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>Elastomeric gaskets, plungers, and O-rings are common sources of leachable compounds in the manufacturing, storage, and delivery of drug products. E&amp;Ls derived from elastomeric components may impact the stability and efficacy of small and large molecule drug products<sup>1</sup>, and therefore need to be characterized thoroughly. Exposure to some E&amp;L chemicals, such as phthalates and nitrosamines, even at low levels, may cause safety concerns.<sup>2</sup> Chemicals derived from the elastomer manufacturing process typically include accelerators, activators, antioxidants, fillers, plasticizers (including phthalates), mold release agents, and other additives<sup>3</sup> that may leach into the final product. Some additives present in elastomer packaging materials may also contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)<sup>4</sup> and aliphatic hydrocarbons.</p><p>GC/MS is a commonly used technique for analyzing volatile and semivolatile organic compounds in the E&amp;L space. This study demonstrates the capabilities of GC/MSD to identify GC-amenable compounds present in a solvent extract of a rubber gasket by leveraging chromatographic deconvolution in combination with retention index (RI)-based filtering. Adding a high-resolution accurate mass GC/Q-TOF into the E&amp;L workflow provided a higher number of identified chemicals. It also increased confidence in compound identification and enabled structure elucidation of unknown compounds.</p><p>The study was performed in the Network Workstation configuration using Agilent OpenLab Electronic Content Management (ECM) XT as the data repository. This configuration enabled tools that facilitate compliance with various national and EU electronic record regulations, including audit trails, user authentication, role-based permission controls, and remote data storage.<sup>5</sup></p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>The GC/MSD is an effective and accessible tool for the analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds in complex E&amp;L extracts. The established workflow includes deconvolution and an RI-based library search with the data acquisition performed in a compliant environment.</p><p>The high-resolution Agilent 7250 GC/Q-TOF enabled the identification of additional components with increased confidence, as well as structure elucidation of the unknown compounds.</p><p>Furthermore, using the novel ultra-low bleed Agilent J&amp;W DB-5Q GC column resulted in a significant decrease in background, which helps in the identification of late-eluting compounds.</p>

Agilent Technologies: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/te_openlab_oligo_analysis_accelerator_5994_7798en_agilent_d8503d3d3c.pdf"><strong>Purity, Assay, and Impurity Profiling of Single-Stranded Oligonucleotides Using Agilent Oligo Analysis Accelerator for OpenLab CDS</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Technical note</li></ul><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>Challenges with therapeutic synthetic oligonucleotides include determining the sample purity, label claim or assay, and quantitation of impurities. Traditional HPLC methods that rely on 260 nm UV detection may not have the necessary sensitivity or specificity for quality control (QC) testing. Using a more selective detector such as a mass spectrometer is a viable approach for QC testing needs. Although LC/MS methods are a mainstay for characterization of oligos, many high-resolution accurate mass detectors may not have the robustness needed in a routine testing environment such as QC. Additionally, a high level of technical expertise is often required for MS operation, data analysis, and data interpretation.</p><p>A more practical approach uses a single quadrupole detector that is both sufficiently selective and sensitive enough for purity, assay, and impurity profiling of oligos. Given its relatively high mass range and sensitivity in full scan mode, the Agilent InfinityLab LC/MSD XT can meet the demands for LC/MS QC.</p><p>As demonstrated by Rentel et al.,1 the LC/MSD XT can be used and validated for the QC lot release of oligos. However, one challenge that remains is the complex, multistep data analysis which requires the extraction of several extracted ion chromatograms and manual integrations. Performing these operations in a chromatography data system (CDS) while meeting compliance requirements can be time consuming. Manual transcriptions by the analyst may lead to a high margin of error, further delaying decision making.</p><p>This technical overview will address the Oligo Analysis Accelerator (OAA) for Agilent OpenLab CDS. This software add-on acts as the data analysis front end to OpenLab CDS, leveraging built-in technical controls that help meet data integrity and compliance requirements. By performing overlays, integrations, and calculations in a fit-for-purpose user interface, data analysis is significantly streamlined. This not only saves time-on-task but also improves data quality.</p><p><strong>Summary</strong></p><p>The final step in the workflow is to review the results. This includes the SST results shown in previous steps, as well as purity and identity results. Assay results may vary depending on which formulation was selected for the sample.</p><p>It is important to note that the summary itself is not the report. An OpenLab CDS report template must still be used to report the results for review. Further, any electronic signatures and approvals occur within OpenLab CDS, not in OAA. Again, this is because OAA leverages the already existing data compliance engine within the OpenLab CDS platform.</p><p><strong>Future considerations</strong></p><p>LC/MS data analytical workflows have been confined to data systems either used to interpret spectra or chromatograms. However, the need for more user-friendly, fit-for-purpose data analysis is becoming increasingly important for the development of complex therapeutics such as oligonucleotides.&nbsp;</p><p>Agilent Oligo Analysis Accelerator for OpenLab CDS is a paradigm shift in the way software is being developed.</p><h4><strong>2. Waters Corporation: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720008495_en_8ac74493e3.pdf"><strong>Repeatability and Reproducibility of the Oasis™ WAX/GCB for PFAS Analysis Cartridges in Aqueous Samples for EPA Method 1633</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>In January 2024, EPA Method 1633 was finalized. EPA Method 1633 is the first method to incorporate the determination of 40 PFAS compounds across many challenging environmental sample matrices outside of drinking water, including non-potable waters (ground water, surface water, and wastewater) as well as soil, biosolids, and tissue by LC-MS/MS analysis. EPA Method 1633 requires use of both weak anion exchange (WAX) solid phase extraction with graphitized carbon black (GCB) cleanup and is a performance-based method allowing for modifications as long as acceptance criteria for recoveries and %RSDs are met.</p><p>This application note highlights the sample extraction for non-potable aqueous samples in EPA Method 1633 using a dual-phase, or bilayer cartridge: Oasis WAX/GCB for PFAS Analysis meeting the method acceptance criteria and displays reproducibility of the cartridges.</p><p><strong>Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>Oasis WAX/GCB for PFAS Analysis, a dual-phase cartridge is reproducible and repeatable for EPA Method 1633 aqueous samples in both inter- and intra-batch assays</li><li>Reduction of manual steps, overall sample preparation time by use of the dual-phase SPE cartridge</li><li>Acceptance criteria for recoveries and %RSDs are met for EPA Method 1633 for aqueous samples</li></ul><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>This study demonstrates the reproducibility of the dual-phase Oasis WAX/GCB for PFAS Analysis cartridges for determination of 40 PFAS and standards using the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class System and Xevo TQ-XS Mass Spectrometer. The cartridges are suitable for PFAS analysis in accordance with EPA 1633 guidelines for recovery and %RSD. The WAX/GCB cartridges show excellent repeatability across multiple product lots and within multiple replicates of each lot across non-potable water samples. The data demonstrates Oasis WAX/GCB for PFAS Analysis cartridges are ideally suited for PFAS analysis from complex matrices, such as non-potable waters like those described in EPA Method 1633. Out of the box performance is expected lot to lot and within a lot for SPE when using Oasis WAX/GCB for PFAS Analysis.</p><h4><strong>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/ab_003164_en_dllme_triplus_pfas_15478b8469.pdf"><strong>Dispersive liquid-liquid micro-extraction for the automated sample preparation of PFAS in drinking water</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Application benefits</strong></p><ul><li>Improved sensitivity: DLLME provides high enrichment factors, which can improve the detection sensitivity of PFAS in drinking water samples, down to challenging regulatory detection and reporting limits.</li><li>Cost-effective: DLLME uses a small volume of solvent, which not only reduces the cost but also makes the method more environmentally friendly.</li><li>Versatility: DLLME can be employed for the analysis of a wide range of PFAS classes, followed by either high performance liquid chromatography or gas chromatography as a separation technique, coupled to tandem mass spectrometry or high-resolution accurate mass as detection method.</li></ul><p><strong>Goal</strong></p><p>To demonstrate a comprehensive method for the analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by harnessing the potential of automated sample preparation on the Thermo Scientific™ TriPlus™ RSH SMART liquid handling station, with dispersive liquid-liquid micro extraction (DLLME) as a simple, cost-effective, and versatile extraction and pre-concentration technique. This was performed on LC-MS, but the same workflow can be also applied to GC-MS.</p><p><strong>Keywords:</strong> DLLME, PFAS, sample preparation, automation, liquid handling, drinking water</p><p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p><p>The DLLME method presented in this work is a promising technique for the extraction and pre-concentration of PFAS from drinking water samples. Thanks to the described careful optimization and validation of the method, it provides an automated, fast, efficient, and green alternative to traditional and manual extraction methods. As compared to SPE procedures, the only manual steps consist in adding internal standards and an acidic solution to the sample, and then the TriPlus RSH SMART instrument will perform the extraction automatically, while for SPE procedures, the rest of the steps are mostly manual. This workflow allows laboratories to overcome the challenges associated with this analysis, providing high enrichment factors for all the different compound classes studied, as well as good reproducibility and robustness of the extraction process. In summary, the presented automated DLLME sample preparation has the following advantages:</p><ul><li>Reduced sample volume (15 mL) for easy sample handling, transportation, and storage.</li><li>Cost reduced by low solvent usage and no need for filters or SPE cartridges.</li><li>Automation enables reproducible and accurate results, with low inner- and cross-contamination.</li><li>Short runtime and automated process managed by Chromeleon software saves time and allows staff to perform more profitable activities.</li><li>The short runtime of the TriPlus RSH SMART instrument opens the possibility to feed one or more analytical instruments, including HPLC-MS or GC-MS technologies.</li><li>The extraction protocol without using filters and based on the use of low-density solvent for extraction can open the way for the extraction of other matrices such as wastewater.</li></ul><h4><strong>4. Concerns about PFAS and their persistence in the environment, accumulation in living organisms, toxicity to living organisms, and ability to travel long distances have recently led to fact-finding studies on PFAS and the introduction of regulations. As of October 2023, only three PFAS are subject to regulatory restrictions in Japan (PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS), but more are subject to restrictions in the USA and Europe. Throughout the world, an increasing number of PFAS are expected to require analysis. These changes will create more analytical data that will have to be processed, creating a need for more efficient methods of data analysis.</p><p>Peakintelligence is a peak integration software equipped with peak-finding algorithms that have been developed with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). This Application News describes a case example in which it was used to process chromatogram data of PFAS analysis and reduce the effort required and increase the efficiency of the analysis.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>Using Peakintelligence to process peaks in PFAS analysis substantially reduced the number of false detections and falsely identified peaks. It also significantly reduced the number of peaks that required manual processing, and it did not need pre-analysis adjustment of parameters. These improvements enable substantial reductions in the time and effort required to perform data analysis. Avoiding parameter settings by the user also eliminates variability in the results between users, which helps eliminate dependency on specific personnel. As the number of PFAS requiring analysis increases throughout the world, a more efficient method of analyzing peaks will be needed; Peakintelligence is an effective solution for this need.</p><h4><strong>5. LiFePO4 batteries have a slightly lower energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries. However, high discharge rates of lfp batteries make them ideal for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and backup power systems. Lithium iron(II) phosphate is used as a cathode material in lithium iron phosphate batteries. Characterization of lfp and monitoring the oxidation state of iron in lfp batteries is relevant to battery performance in terms of durability, capacity, and safety. Additionally, analyzing chemical composition can be useful for battery research and can aid eco-friendly recycling practices. This is essential for driving battery technology forward and promoting clean energy solutions.</p><p>Polarographic speciation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) can be used to evaluate the purity of LiFePO4 and its usability as a cathode material in lithium iron phosphate batteries. It can further be used to study the concentrations of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the cathode material after several charging and discharging cycles to evaluate the aging behavior.</p>

Agilent Technologies: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_v_groove_nebulizer_5994_7788en_agilent_4ae77b4b3a.pdf"><strong>Reducing Instrument Downtime in Elemental Analysis of Lubricant Oils as per ASTM 5185</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><h5><strong>Run samples faster and for longer using the V-groove nebulizer</strong></h5><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>In this application note, lubricant oil samples were analyzed using an Agilent 5900 Synchronous Vertical Dual View (SVDV) inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) coupled with an Agilent Advanced Valve System 6 (AVS 6) and the Agilent V-groove nebulizer to enable the rapid analysis of over 1,000 samples in 6 hours (more than 160 samples per hour). The V-groove nebulizer provides exceptional performance characteristics, robustness, and durability, even when using troublesome samples. It also provides a reduction in sample loading on the plasma, which reduces carbon formation on the injector of the torch, allowing extended run times, while exceeding the sensitivity requirements required for the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.</p><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>Elemental analysis of lubricant and hydraulic oils is essential for predictive and preventive maintenance, as well as trend analysis in many heavy industries. The ASTM D5185‑18 standard method1 is the gold standard in tribology laboratories globally to quantify additive elements, wear metals, and contaminants. This method uses ICP-OES for the rapid elemental determination of 22 elements in both used and unused lubricating and base oils, providing quick screening of used oils for signs of wear.</p><p>Tribology laboratories typically process hundreds of samples daily; therefore, they are constantly searching for ways to enhance efficiency and improve sample throughput. Instrument downtime caused by blockages in the sample introduction system (SIS) can be a common problem in these high-throughput labs. These blockages are typically caused by suspended particles in the samples blocking the nebulizer, and carbon deposits blocking the injector of the torch. Although various methods exist to remove the blockage from the nebulizer and clean the torch, all require extinguishing the plasma to remove and clean the SIS.</p><p>The use of a robust nebulizer is a strategy that can enable tribology laboratories to run more samples with reduced blockage. This will improve their workflows and increase sample throughput, reducing both instrument downtime and their running costs. One example of a robust nebulizer that helps to overcome the blockage issues is the inert, high-total-dissolved-solids (high-TDS) Agilent V-groove nebulizer, which is capable of aspirating highly dissolved solids and slurries (up to 30% dissolved solids with a maximum particle size of 350 μm). Its inert construction also ensures that any solvent can be nebulized.</p><p>In this application note, used diesel engine lubricant oil samples were analyzed using the 5900 SVDV ICP-OES coupled with the AVS 6 and the V-groove nebulizer, following the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>This application note shows the suitability of the Agilent 5900 SVDV ICP-OES used with the Agilent AVS 6 and inert V-groove nebulizer for rapid multi-element analysis of used lubricant oil samples using the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.</p><p>Excellent long-term stability was demonstrated when more than 1,000 samples were analyzed over a six-hour period (22 to 23 seconds per sample). All measurements of this spiked oil sample were within ± 10% of the expected value, with precision better than 5% RSD in most cases. The spike recovery study showed how the 5900 ICP-OES, used with the inert V-groove nebulizer, can accurately detect low range concentrations of wear metals and high concentrations of the elements from the additive package in a single analysis. The inert V-groove nebulizer also enabled the samples to be run faster, with excellent accuracy.</p><p>Despite no oxygen injection being used, there were no signs of blockage of the injector of the torch, or carbon deposition after the test. The V-groove nebulizer design reduces sample loading on the plasma, minimizing carbon buildup while maintaining the sensitivity required for the ASTM D5185 standard method. No nebulizer blockage was experienced while collecting the data for this study. The inert V-groove nebulizer allows extended run times by reducing the frequency of torch and nebulizer maintenance. This demonstrates the stability of the 5900 ICP-OES and the suitability of the inert V-groove nebulizer for high-throughput tribology laboratories, by reducing instrument maintenance downtime and improving sample throughput.</p><h4><strong>2. Thermo Fisher Scientific: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/pn_002807_tea_icp_ms_halogens_wpc_2024_pn002807_en_b235f7ba82.pdf"><strong>WPC: Sensitive and interference free analysis of halogens using triple quadrupole ICP-MS</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Poster / WPC</li></ul><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>The analysis of halogens is important in many different industries, such as environmental monitoring, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, but also Li-ion battery and renewable fuels. Halogen analysis is commonly carried out using ion chromatography (IC), whereas argon plasma-based techniques like ICP-MS are less common, due to poor sensitivitiy, and potential spectral interferences. This study describes a complete analytical workflow using the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQe ICP-MS for the accurate and precise quantification of challenging halogen analytes like fluorine, chlorine, and bromine.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong></p><p>This work highlights how triple quadrupole ICP-MS systems, such as the iCAP TQe ICP-MS, operated in TQ-O 2 mode can be used for accurate and precise quantification of challenging analytes such as halogens.</p><ul><li>It could be shown that chlorine and bromine can be analyzed directly using optimized instrument conditions.</li><li>It further highlights the feasibility of iCAP TQe ICP-MS for indirect but accurate and precise determination of fluorine by following approach of complex formation with barium under optimized and controlled conditions</li><li>The analytical data and observations made during this study strongly suggest that iCAP TQe ICP-MS equipped with dedicated mass flow controllers (MFCs) for introduction of pure oxygen and pure helium as cell gases is a powerful tool to accomplish the otherwise challenging analysis of halogens.</li><li>Upcoming studies will focus on the application of the fluorine measurements in hyphenated techniques, such as liquid chromatography hyphenated to ICP-MS to assess the potential for emerging contaminant screening, i.e. of PFAS</li></ul><h4><strong>3. One of the components of LIBs, the anode, accumulates and releases Li ions during charging and discharging. Graphite-based materials are mainly used as the anode material in LIBs. In China, one of the major producers, the analysis of elemental impurities in graphite, which is used as LIB anode material, is required by GB/T 24533-20191) using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).</p><p>In this Application News, elemental impurities in LIB anode materials were analyzed using the ICPE-9820. Spike recovery tests were performed to confirm the validity of the analytical values. Additionally, the “Acquisition for All Wavelength” feature allows for checking the presence of elemental impurities that were not subjected to quantitative analysis.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>In this Application News, an analysis of elemental impurities in LIB anode materials was performed using the ICPE-9820. Good spike recoveries were obtained, confirming the accuracy of the analysis. Additionally, elements and wavelengths were added after the measurement to identify elemental impurities other than the analyzed elements present in the anode materials.</p><h4><strong>4. Metrohm: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_pan_1064_download_39b556efd8.pdf"><strong>Monitoring complexing agents in galvanic baths inline with Raman spectroscopy</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>The main purposes of galvanic process baths include the surface refinement of workpieces and the setting of physical properties. To this end, bath additives (e.g., organic compounds or complexing agents) are regularly added in different amounts, depending on the processing load. Since the bath composition changes continuously due to the introduction of the workpieces, close monitoring of the concentration of the bath additives is necessary to ensure that the end product quality is at the highest level.</strong></p><p>This Process Application Note presents a method to accurately analyze complexing agents inline in galvanic baths with a 2060 Raman Analyzer from Metrohm Process Analytics. This enables real-time bath control and thus an increase in production efficiency and product quality.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></p><p>Raman spectroscopy is an easy-to-use analytical technique that identifies liquids and solids within seconds. The 2060 Raman Analyzer from Metrohm Process Analytics is a high-performance Raman system designed for monitoring different processes like electroplating.</p><p>Together with Metrohm’s Vision and IMPACT software, the 2060 Raman Analyzer can be used to acquire real-time results, increase roductivity, and lower production costs.</p>
