<p><strong>The goal of this study is to advance molecular epidemiology by integrating and analyzing large-scale population data from two complementary platforms: quantitative NMR spectroscopy for 209 lipoprotein measures and LC-MS/MS for 809 lipid classes and species. Together, these datasets encompass 1018 molecular measures across 7830 participants from two population cohorts. The study aims to elucidate the molecular and compositional relationships within the circulatory lipid transport system and their connections to physiological and clinical characteristics.</strong></p><p>Through cluster analyses and unsupervised neural network techniques (self-organizing maps), the study identifies inherent links between deep molecular data and population health traits, including cardiometabolic risk factors such as lipoprotein lipids, apolipoprotein B, ceramides, and oxidized lipids. Notable findings include the consistent cardiometabolic risk associations of triglyceride species across the lipoprotein cascade and the intricate metabolic profiles of cholesteryl ester species, which vary in their risk implications. Formats and hyperlinks were adapted from the original.</strong></p><h3><strong>Abstract</strong></h3><p>Applications of advanced omics methodologies are increasingly popular in biomedicine. However, large-scale studies aiming at clinical translation are typically siloed to single technologies. Here, we present the first comprehensive large-scale population data combining 209 lipoprotein measures from a quantitative NMR spectroscopy platform and 809 lipid classes and species from a quantitative LC-MS/MS platform. These data with 1018 molecular measures were analyzed in two population cohorts totaling 7830 participants. The association and cluster analyses revealed excellent coherence between the methodologically independent data domains and confirmed their quantitative compatibility and suitability for large-scale studies. The analyses elucidated the detailed molecular characteristics of the heterogeneous circulatory macromolecular lipid transport system and the underlying structural and compositional relationships. Unsupervised neural network analysis─the so-called self-organizing maps (SOMs)─revealed that these deep molecular and metabolic data are inherently related to key physiological and clinical population characteristics. The data-driven population subgroups uncovered marked differences in the population distribution of multiple cardiometabolic risk factors. These include, e.g., multiple lipoprotein lipids, apolipoprotein B, ceramides, and oxidized lipids. All 79 structurally unique triglyceride species showed similar associations over the entire lipoprotein cascade and indicated systematically increased risk for carotid intima media thickening and other atherosclerosis risk factors, including obesity and inflammation. The metabolic attributes for 27 individual cholesteryl ester species, which formed six distinct clusters, were more intricate with associations both with higher─e.g., CE(16:1)─and lower─e.g., CE(20:4)─cardiometabolic risk. The molecular details provided by these combined data are unprecedented for molecular epidemiology and demonstrate a new potential avenue for population studies.</p><p>Lipoprotein lipids have had a central role in clinical risk assessment for cardiometabolic diseases since the 1950s. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 1">(1)</a> The realization that <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectroscopy would be inherently suited for lipoprotein analytics took place in the early 1990s. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 2">(2)</a> In addition to the fundamental advantages of <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectroscopy in producing quantitative data, the spherical monolayered structure of lipoprotein particles provides a compelling attribute that the chemical shifts of lipid molecules transported by these particles are dependent on the particle diameter. This phenomenon arises from the orientational order of the surface lipids and the resulting anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility, and leads to distinctive particle size-dependent frequency shifts. This facilitates comprehensive lipoprotein analytics that is pertinent to the metabolic constituents of the lipoprotein cascade. Practical applications and statistical considerations have indicated that 14 lipoprotein subclasses and their main lipid constituents can be robustly quantified. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 3 and 4">(3,4)</a> Multiple commercial methodologies have also been developed. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 5 to 7">(5−7)</a> Here we applied a platform that has been widely applied in large-scale epidemiology and genetics over the last 15 years with some 500 publications and 2 M samples analyzed, including all the 0.5 M serum samples in the UK Biobank. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 3, 5 and 8">(3,5,8)</a> This particular platform has also played a key role in yielding open access genetic data, with the most recent genome-wide association study meta-analysis being carried out in 136,000 individuals. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 9">(9)</a></p><p>Mass spectrometry based lipidomics methodologies have been developed independent of the above and are technologically more challenging than the applications of <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectroscopy. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 10 to 12">(10−12)</a> Nevertheless, epidemiological applications have become feasible over the recent years and clinical translation has been suggested, for example, with respect to assessing cardiometabolic risk <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 13 and 14">(13,14)</a> and cognitive impairment. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 15">(15)</a> Initial genetic studies have also been published. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 16 and 17">(16,17)</a></p><p>The NMR spectroscopy and MS lipidomics approaches to lipid characterization and quantification are fundamentally different (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.analchem.4c03229#fig1" data-tab="pane-pcw-Figures" id="">Figure 1</a>). In NMR the serum sample is directly analyzed with the lipoprotein particles intact; this allows quantification of the comprehensive and specific data on the lipoprotein subclasses and lipids. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 18">(18)</a> Unlike NMR, LC-MS/MS lipidomics calls for lipid extraction of the serum samples as an integral prerequisite for the analyses. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 19">(19)</a> The lipidomics sample preparations thus represent pooled mixtures of all the lipid molecules from all the circulating lipoprotein particles. All the information from the specific lipoprotein origin of a certain lipid in the circulation is lost in the extraction phase. The percentages depict the compositional variation of these lipids in different lipoprotein particles." srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/thumbnail_Anal_Chem_2024_96_52_20362_20370_Figure_1_Schematic_illustration_of_the_methodological_differences_and_analytical_characteristics_between_1_H_NMR_and_LC_MSMS_lipidomics_and_their_molecular_views_into_serum_b9907a5e30.jpeg 192w," sizes="100vw" width="947" height="771"></p><p>Lipoprotein particles are the sole transport vehicles for all lipid molecules in serum, <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 18, 21 and 22">(18,21,22)</a> though albumin contains the bulk of free fatty acids and acylcarnitines, and transports also various lyso-type of lipid molecules. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 23 and 24">(23,24)</a> The NMR and the LC-MS/MS data on serum essentially represent the same lipids as noted by Ghorasaini et al. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 25">(25)</a> The NMR provides the size-resolution and metabolic information on lipoprotein particles (209 measures) and the LC-MS/MS lipidomics opens up a prolific and detailed molecular view on all the circulating lipids (809 measures).</p><p>These different methodologies and molecular views to study serum lipids have independently advanced toward large-scale population studies. Here, we integrate these state-of-the-art data─over 1000 quantitative molecular lipid measures per individual─in two large-scale population cohorts of over 7800 participants. These data reveal the fundamental relationships between the lipoprotein subclass cascade and metabolism (NMR) and the plethora of specific molecular information (LC-MS/MS). The molecular and metabolic corollaries are numerous, and we elaborate on some pertinent findings. Among the various analyses we also demonstrate the admirable coherence within the independent experiments and data domains. It is also uncovered─via data-driven, unsupervised neural network analysis─that these molecular lipid measures per se can be utilized for metabolically and clinically meaningful subgrouping of populations. The results illustrate that these combined comprehensive data lead to improved molecular characterization of population-level metabolic health and cardiometabolic risk.</p><h3><strong>Materials and Methods</strong></h3><h5><strong><sup>1</sup>H NMR Spectroscopy</strong></h5><p>We applied an NMR platform that has been widely used in epidemiology and for which the general methodological issues have been published. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 3, 5, 8, 9 and 18">(3,5,8,9,18)</a> The separation of lipoprotein subclasses by proton NMR spectroscopy is based on particle size, <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 2">(2)</a> the platform resolution being 14 subclasses (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.analchem.4c03229#fig2" data-tab="pane-pcw-Figures" id="">Figure 2</a>). <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 3 and 18">(3,18)</a> Independent verification for the number of subclasses has been published by Mihaleva and co-workers with an in-depth handling of statistical grounds. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 4">(4)</a> Particle (P), phospholipid (PL), free cholesterol (FC), cholesteryl ester (CE), and triglyceride (TG) concentrations are quantified for all 14 subclasses, also allowing calculation of the relative lipid composition for each lipoprotein subclass. The platform also provides all key clinically used lipid measures (e.g., total TG, cholesterol, and HDL-C) as well as apolipoprotein B (apoB) and A-I (apoA-I) concentrations. In total 209 lipoprotein-related measures were analyzed (98 concentration and 70 compositional measures from 14 lipoprotein subclasses, 19 clinical lipid measures, and 22 measures related to fatty acids, average particle sizes, and apoA-I and apoB).</p><h5><strong>LC-MS/MS Mass Spectrometry</strong></h5><p>Serum lipids were extracted as previously described. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 19">(19)</a> The LC-MS/MS profiling was performed using the standardized methodology described recently by Huynh et al. <a href="javascript:void(0);" aria-label="reference 12">(12)</a> and updated with a larger set of targets. The mass spectrometric details and parameters are given in the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.analchem.4c03229/suppl_file/ac4c03229_si_001.pdf">Supporting Information</a>.</p><h3><strong>Conclusions</strong></h3><p>The presented combination of lipoprotein and lipid data from NMR spectroscopy and LC-MS/MS lipidomics led to an unprecedented metabolic and molecular detail with over 1000 measures per person in a population setting of over 7800 individuals. The analyses demonstrated notable coherence between the data from inherently different spectroscopic techniques. The data-driven analyses revealed multiple confirmatory and novel molecular results in relation to systemic lipid metabolism and illustrated the power of all-inclusive lipid data in understanding cardiometabolic population health, related clinical factors, and disease risk. The analyses emphasized the augmented value of interpreting lipidomics data (deep molecular phenotyping) together with lipoprotein data (deep metabolic phenotyping) and association heatmaps between all the lipidomics measures and the key measures characterizing lipoprotein subclass metabolism are provided. These unique motifs are useful as guidelines for the key lipoprotein mediators for various lipidomics associations in biomedical studies when comprehensive lipoprotein profiles are not available.</p>

Improper dumping of waste or industrial leachates contaminates underground water. This contaminated water exposes humans to VOCs in their daily lives. Each VOC poses different exposure risk based on its individual constituents. To protect human health and the environment, the US EPA developed Method 8260D1) to identify and quantify VOCs in water using single quadrupole GCMS.</p><p>Purge-and-trap is a common sampling technique for this application. However, in this study, Shimadzu’s Trap-Headspace system is utilized as an alternative sampling technique and is evaluated against EPA 8260D criteria. VOCs sampled from the headspace are concentrated in a trap before being injected into the GC, providing high sensitivity in the analysis. The headspace system, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?instrumentationItems=6&amp;mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=HS-20+NX"><strong>HS-20 NX</strong></a> (Trap Model), also features heated and inert sample lines with a short transfer line to suppress analytes adsorption. This analysis was executed using an Agilent 8890 gas chromatography (GC) system equipped with an Agilent 8355 sulfur chemiluminescence detector (SCD) and an Agilent 5977 mass spectrometer detector (MSD). Samples were preconcentrated using a thermal desorption system, followed by separation on an Agilent J&amp;W DB-Sulfur SCD column. A purged two-way splitter was used to split the sample at a 3:1 ratio onto the SCD and MSD. This flexible configuration demonstrated excellent performance for these three categories of compounds. The correlation coefficients for all target compounds exceeded 0.9971, with reproducibility results varying between 0.3% and 7.9%. The detection limits for sulfides, formaldehyde, and organic halides were 0.01, 0.1, and 0.5 nmol/mol, respectively.</p><h5><strong>Introduction</strong></h5><p>Contrasted with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) that use hydrogen as an energy source present many advantages. These advantages include superior conversion efficiency and zero emissions, thus being esteemed as another groundbreaking revolution in the automobile industry.<sup>1</sup> FCVs deploy proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), transforming chemical energy into electrical energy through the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen facilitated by a catalyst. The purity of hydrogen fundamentally determines the battery performance and lifespan. Hydrogen derived from fossil fuels, for example, referred to as grey hydrogen, is a substantial source. Grey hydrogen can include impurities, such as sulfides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, light hydrocarbons, formaldehyde, formic acid, and inert gases originating from the raw materials or the chemical reaction process.<sup>2</sup> Other colors of hydrogen from different sources may include various combinations of impurities as well. These impurities are crucial elements affecting the durability of the fuel cell. Sulfides are severe catalyst poisons, causing irreversible degradation of fuel cell performance even at part per trillion (ppt) levels. Both CO and CO<sub>2</sub> impurities in the hydrogen fuel can cause fuel cell performance degradation, with CO being more severe. Formaldehyde, an intermediate product in the process of hydrogen production from natural gas or methanol, has a poisoning mechanism like CO, but is more harmful. Trace amounts of ammonia can decrease the mass transfer ability of the electrolyte membrane, leading to irreversible degradation of the battery performance. Halides also irreversibly affect the performance of hydrogen fuel cells. Inert impurities in hydrogen (such as He, Ar, N<sub>2</sub>) do not poison the fuel cell but dilute the hydrogen fuel, reducing the cell potential and leading to power loss.</p><p>To ensure the long-term stable operation of hydrogen fuel cells, various organizations have established quality standards for hydrogen used in FCVs. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in the United States have established specific standards for hydrogen used in PEMFCs, namely ISO 14687-20193 and SAE J2719-2015.4 China has also established GB/T 37244-20185 to regulate the quality of hydrogen products. These standards consistently specify limits for certain impurities in hydrogen, such as sulfides not exceeding 0.004 μmol/mol, formaldehyde not exceeding 0.01 μmol/mol, and total halides not exceeding 0.05 μmol/mol. The GB/T 44243-20246 method details the determination of sulfide, formaldehyde, and organic halides in hydrogen for FCVs, gives reference instrument configurations, and also presents performance results.</p><p>In accordance with those standards, this study has established a comprehensive analytical method for multiple key trace impurities in hydrogen for FCVs. An analytical platform has been designed for seven sulfides, formaldehyde, and eight organic halides. Sulfides are detected using a GC/SCD, while formaldehyde and organic halides are detected using a GC/MSD. In LC and LC/MS analyses of trace compounds, vial selection is very important. Certain vial materials can cause unintentional compound adsorption, reducing analytical sensitivity. For instance, polypropylene (PP) vials often adsorb hydrophobic compounds on their surfaces, while glass vials minimize hydrophobic adsorption but may exhibit surface ionic adsorption of silanol bases and basic compounds due to metallic ion interactions. Additionally, the elution of sodium and other alkali metals from glass surfaces can influence analytical outcomes. To address these issues Shimadzu has developed Shim-vial™, a specially treated vial designed to minimize sodium (Na) elution. Comparative studies demonstrated that Shim-vials exhibit significantly lower Na elution levels than conventional vials. Furthermore, results showed a direct correlation between higher Na elution and increased adsorption of basic compounds, suggesting that metallic ions play a key role in this adsorption phenomenon.</p><h5><strong>Summary</strong></h5><p>It is evident that reducing Na in glass vials limits adsorption of basic compounds. Further, in LC/MS analysis, analytes become Na adducts due to the presence of Na ions, which has an impact on the sensitivity at the original m/z as well. Because adsorption and the production of Na adducts are so noticeable in the analysis of low concentration compounds, there are likely cases where the results obtained differ from the actual results, without anyone noticing. To prevent such issues, the use of high quality, low adsorption vials is recommended. The Shim-vial H/S series feature very low Na elution amounts due to a special treatment, enabling their use as vials that provide stable analysis results for both basic and acidic compounds.<strong>&nbsp;</strong></p><h4><strong>2.&nbsp;Agilent Technologies: Analysis of 764 Pesticides in Tomato Using an Agilent 6495D Triple Quadrupole LC/MS System</strong></h4><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/paper/28647"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p><strong>Pesticide residue workflow for determination of 764 pesticides in tomato QuEChERS extract</strong></p><h5><strong>Abstract</strong></h5><p>A comprehensive LC/MS/MS method for 764 pesticides in QuEChERS tomato raw extract was established using an Agilent 6495D triple quadrupole LC/MS system. With 4th-generation iFunnel technology and novel inlet design, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?instrumentationItems=31&amp;mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=6495d"><strong>6495D LC/TQ system</strong></a> delivers ultimate sensitivity with high precision at sub-millisecond dwell times, without compromising robustness, for the most difficult analytes in complex food matrices. The iFunnel can uniquely be tuned on a compound-by-compound basis for optimal transmission of all analytes in an assay for wide-scope multiresidue pesticide analysis that includes fragile compounds. Speed of acquisition and duty cycle are enhanced with the latest onboard computing, enabling 150% more concurrent dynamic multiple reaction monitoring (dMRM) for extended large-panel assays as well as shortened run times. These improvements make it a robust and reliable option for performing routine trace analysis in the most demanding production environments. Overall, the 6495D LC/TQ is a significant upgrade in terms of performance and usability for pesticide analysis.</p><h5><strong>Conclusions</strong></h5><p>This study demonstrates the performance of an Agilent 6495D triple quadrupole LC/MS system with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Infinity+III"><strong>Agilent 1290 Infinity III LC</strong></a> for the analysis of 764 pesticides in tomato QuEChERS raw extract. Enhanced onboard computing enables increased acquisition speed and up to 150% more concurrent dMRMs for extended large-panel assays and shortened run times. With 4th-generation iFunnel technology and tunable settings, users can now select the best iFunnel setting for each compound transition to achieve optimal sensitivity. The late diagnosis of this disease frequently leads to a poor prognosis, emphasizing the crucial need for improved early detection tools. Present diagnostic tests either lack sensitivity or require invasive biopsies and are not always feasible or comfortable for patients.</p><p>One of the significant advantages of plasma proteomics is the ease of sample collection through routine blood draws. The analysis of blood plasma for cancer biomarkers presents a promising avenue for early detection, but the complexity of the associated workflows has hindered progress in this area.<sup>1</sup></p><p>The analysis of plasma presents a substantial challenge due to the vast concentration range of proteins in blood plasma. Detecting low abundant proteins, which hold potential as biomarkers, proves challenging as they are often greatly overshadowed by high-abundant proteins. In fact, approximately 99% of the plasma proteome is composed of proteins such as albumin, globulins, and coagulants, effectively overshadowing potentially less abundant protein biomarkers. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop methods that can accurately identify and quantify these low-abundant proteins in plasma samples.</p><p>Mass spectrometery-based proteomic analysis, in conjunction with advanced separation technology, is a leading method for studying low-abundant proteins due to its sensitivity, unambiguous peptide identification, and accurate quantitation. The cutting-edge Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometer offers unprecedented sensitivity and reproducibility for low-abundant proteins, which enables deeper plasma proteome coverage and facilitates the discovery of potential biomarkers.</p><h5><strong>Conclusions</strong></h5><p>Neat plasma workflows, while easy to handle due to minimal sample preparation, suffer from dynamic range issues, which result in shallow coverage of the plasma proteome compared to enriched or depleted plasma workflows.</p><p>The use of High Select Depletion Spin Columns for plasma depletion has proven to significantly increase proteome coverage. Compared to neat plasma, proteome coverage is enhanced by 2- to 3-fold. Taken together, these workflows with the Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometer enable new possibilities for biomarker discovery from large cohort plasma proteomics studies.</p><h4><strong>4.&nbsp;Metrohm: Water quality testing with EPA 300.1</strong></h4><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/paper/28651"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p><strong>Boost lab efficiency with automated eluent generation and single-run analysis of anions and disinfection byproducts</strong></p><p>Standard analytical methods like U.S. EPA Method 300.1 (Parts A and B), ISO 10304-1, and ISO 10304-4 ensure compliance when monitoring water contaminants that affect human health. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in particular are linked to cancer and reproductive issues [1–5]. EPA 300.1 Part A and ISO 10304-1 outline the analytical requirements for ion chromatographic determination of major inorganic anions. Harmful DBPs (chlorite and chlorate) are included in ISO 10304-4 and EPA 300.1 Part B (plus bromate and dichloroacetic acid / DCAA). Achieving method detection limits (MDLs) for analytes with significant relative concentration differences can be challenging. The Metrosep A Supp 21 high-capacity anion-exchange column for hydroxide eluents and sequentially suppressed conductivity detection allows for a single-run analysis that meets these needs. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=948+Continuous+IC"><strong>The 948 Continuous IC Module</strong></a>, CEP automates KOH eluent generation. Along with a single-standard calibration, this analytical approach provides a highly efficient, sustainable, reliable solution for water testing labs.</p><h5><strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong></h5><p>This application focuses on separating and measuring high concentrations of inorganic anions, (e.g., chloride, nitrate, and sulfate) along with lower concentrations of disinfection byproducts (DBPs, i.e., bromate, chlorite, and chlorate) and nitrite and bromide in a single analysis run using ion chromatography. Accurate measurement across a wide concentration range requires a detector with high linearity, such as the IC Conductivity Detector MB (linearity range of 0–15,000 μS/cm), a high-capacity column (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=Metrosep+A+Supp+21"><strong>Metrosep A Supp 21</strong></a>) for appropriate peak separation, and a low baseline with outstanding signal-to-noise ratio to reach the lowest detection limits.</p><p>The 948 Continuous IC Module, CEP, in combination with the suppressor designed for hydroxide eluents (MSM-HC Rotor A, Hydroxide), guarantees the best analytical conditions – a high purity eluent, low baseline, and best signal-to-noise ratios. The automatic, almost reagent-free hydroxide eluent production out of a high-purity concentrate (4 mol/L potassium hydroxide solution, Supelco, Merck) and easy, straightforward gradient generation eliminates any manual steps and associated human errors. Originally, these standards intended for the analysis to be performed with two separate methods to determine the highly concentrated standard anions beside the trace anions accurately. One guideline that has dealt with this topic to date is the KTW guideline (German for Plastics - Drinking Water) from the German Federal Environment Agency. It was used for the hygienic assessment of organic materials in contact with<br>drinking water and describes the requirements that plastics must meet in this context. As guidelines tend to be of a recommendatory nature, the EU has obliged its member states to specifically regulate the requirements for materials in contact with drinking water. Accordingly, the Federal Environment Agency published the KTW-BWGL (Plastics Drinking Water Assessment Guideline) in March 2019. Nutrients such as calcium, phosphorous, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc serve essential roles in various physiological processes within the human body and provide the building blocks for growth, development, and maintenance of tissues and organs. These elements therefore play crucial roles in maintaining overall health and supporting various bodily functions.</p><p>This application note demonstrates a workflow for highly reproducible sample preparation combined with sensitive and robust analysis for a wide variety of beverages. The proposed workflow allowed accurate determination of both essential nutrients and potentially toxic trace metals without any compromise and can be implemented, for example, in analytical testing laboratories performing the analysis on behalf of manufacturers or regulatory authorities.</p><h5><strong>Conclusion</strong></h5><p>This workflow, combining sample preparation using microwave assisted digestion and analysis using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1488"><strong>iCAP MTX ICP-MS</strong></a>, allows the determination of nutrient composition of fruit juices and processed beverages as required by the food labeling regulations and detection of any contaminants such as toxic elements present in the beverages.</p><p>The analytical method was proven to provide accurate and precise results and can provide reliable performance over long analysis sequences, ensuring productivity in an applied testing laboratory. Based on the automatic and constant 5-times dilution of all samples, there are no matrix effects that would lead to unwanted interruptions of the analysis due to QC failures. Samples can be placed on the autosampler after completing preparation; no additional dilution is required. All types of interferences (polyatomic as well as isobaric interference, including doubly charged ions) are effectively suppressed with either helium collision gas or by using oxygen as a reactive gas in triple quadrupole mode. The instrument method could be easily set up thanks to the Reaction Finder method development assistant for <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1489"><strong>Qtegra ISDS Software</strong></a>.</p>
