This study aimed to develop a high-throughput HPLC-ICP-MS method for the simultaneous quantification of inorganic mercury (Hg²⁺) and methylmercury (MeHg⁺) in human breast milk. The method was validated using a certified reference material, achieving 99% accuracy.A 4-month analysis of breast milk samples from 10 participants examined the effects of collection method and timing on mercury speciation. The results revealed correlations between mercury species, fat content, and selenium, with MeHg⁺ concentrations being higher in hindmilk. Methylmercury (MeHg+), the chemical form of mercury of greatest concern in terms of human toxicity, is converted from inorganic mercury (Hg2+) by microorganisms, and individuals are exposed to it through the consumption of seafood. Nervous system disorders as well as cardiovascular and other effects have&nbsp;been reported&nbsp;following exposure to MeHg+ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0035" name="bb0035" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0035">[7]</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0040" name="bb0040" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0040">[8]</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0045" name="bb0045" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0045">[9]</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0050" name="bb0050" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0050">[10]</a>. The Minamata Convention on Mercury was established&nbsp;to regulate anthropogenic mercury emissions and advocate for the global monitoring of mercury exposure levels <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0055" name="bb0055" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0055">[11]</a>. Nevertheless, given that mercury remains a pervasive environmental pollutant, continuous global monitoring continues to be imperative.Exposure to mercury during the vulnerable period from the fetal stage to infancy is a health concern. Although measurements of total mercury in breast milk—the&nbsp;main&nbsp;source of exposure in infants—have been reported in many regions <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0085" name="bb0085" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0085">[17]</a>, MeHg+ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0090" name="bb0090" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0090">[18]</a> and Hg2+ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0095" name="bb0095" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0095">[19]</a> are released in breast milk; therefore, it is necessary to analyze these chemical species. Blood MeHg+ levels positively correlate with seafood consumption in Japan <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0100" name="bb0100" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0100">[20]</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0105" name="bb0105" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0105">[21]</a>, and inorganic mercury exposure is heavily influenced by dental amalgams <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0110" name="bb0110" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0110">[22]</a> and gold mining <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0115" name="bb0115" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0115">[23]</a>.&nbsp;In Japan,&nbsp;dental amalgams have rarely been used&nbsp;since the 1990s <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0120" name="bb0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0120">[24]</a>.&nbsp;In addition, Hg2+ exposure is also lower now because of the reduced use of mercury in thermometers and other devices.Thus fat, MeHg+ in breast milk has been analyzed mainly using gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0190" name="bb0190" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0190">[38]</a>; however, the&nbsp;pretreatment for such measurements is complicated, and the analytical volume required is large. It is especially important to establish a method that can adequately analyze even small amounts of colostrum because sample volumes are small. Consequently, the following prerequisites must be met for a comprehensive investigation of breast milk, including colostrum: 1) the minimum analytical volume of the sample must be feasible; 2) pretreatment must be straightforward; and 3) validation must be viable, with the methodology being proved highly reliable. In this study, we developed a high-throughput and sensitive analytical method for the separate determination of chemical species of mercury in breast milk that satisfies the above requirements.This study was designed to achieve three objectives. The first was to develop a straightforward approach for analyzing mercury speciation in breast milk. The second was to ascertain the impact of the sampling methodology and timing on the concentrations of Hg2+ and MeHg+ in breast milk. The third was to elucidate the relationships between the Hg2+ and MeHg+ contents and the contents of the other elements and fats.<h3>2. Methods</h3><h4>2.3. HPLC apparatus and conditions</h4>Separation was performed on a metal-free YMC-Triart C18 HPLC column (YMC CO., LTD., Kyoto, Japan), installed in an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=1260+Bio-inert+LC">Agilent 1260 Bio-inert LC</a> system consisting of a G5611A Bio-inert quaternary pump, G5611A Bio-inert high-performance autosampler, and a G1390B isocratic pump (Agilent Technologies Inc., Santa Clara, CA, USA). The outlet of the HPLC column was connected directly to an ICP-MS nebulizer (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#t0010" name="bt0010" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="t0010">Table 2</a>).<h4>2.4. ICP-MS device and conditions</h4>An <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=8900+ICP-QQQ">Agilent 8900 ICP-QQQ </a>(Agilent Technologies Inc.) was used for speciation analysis and elemental concentration measurements. The introduction system consisted of a micro-mist nebulizer, a quartz double-pass spray chamber, and a quartz torch with a diameter of 2.5 mm. The total element concentration analysis was performed using the ICP-MS equipped with an SPS 4 Autosampler (Agilent Technologies, Inc.) [49].<h3>3. Results and discussion</h3><h4>3.2.3. Comparison of total mercury levels measured by HPLC-ICP-MS and ICP-MS</h4>To validate the developed method, we compared the sum of the Hg2+ and MeHg+ concentrations obtained using HPLC-ICP-MS with the total mercury concentration quantified via ICP-MS analysis. We analyzed foremilk and hindmilk samples from 10 participants in four sampling rounds (N = 80). The median concentrations (ng g−1) for the 80 samples were 0.109 (5th–95th percentile: 0.014–0.365) for Hg2+ and 0.220 (5th–95th percentile: 0.046–0.792) for MeHg+. The Hg2+ and MeHg+ concentrations in all the breast milk samples were above the MDL. The ICP-MS determination method for the total mercury and other elemental contents has been previously published <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#b0245" name="bb0245" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="b0245">[49]</a>. NIST SRM 1953 was used as the reference material to validate the determination of total mercury, as well as other elements using ICP-MS (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#s0120" name="bs0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="s0120">Supplemental Table 2</a>). No mercury chemical species other than Hg2+ and MeHg+ were present in breast milk, as determined by HPLC-ICP-MS; therefore, the sum of Hg2+ and MeHg+ was taken to be the total mercury in breast milk. To validate the analytical method, the distributions of total mercury as measured using HPLC-ICP-MS and ICP-MS were plotted. The results from the two methods were found to be strongly correlated (R2&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.895, Pearson’s correlation coefficient&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.946) (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#f0010" name="bf0010" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="f0010">Fig. 2</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#s0120" name="bs0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="s0120">Supplemental Table 3</a>). The effects of adjusting the fat content were also investigated. The values showed better agreement in samples with low fat contents, whereas there was more variation in samples with high fat contents. For samples with high fat contents, the correlation improved upon fat content adjustment (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#s0120" name="bs0120" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="s0120">Supplemental Table 4</a>). A Bland–Altman plot was used to assess the agreement between the two methods (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026265X25004965#f0015" name="bf0015" data-sd-ui-side-panel-opener="true" data-xocs-content-type="reference" data-xocs-content-id="f0015">Fig. 3</a>). The results of the two measurement methods were generally in agreement. However, discrepancies were observed at lower concentrations. Conclusion</h3>We developed a high-throughput and sensitive method for analyzing mercury speciation in breast milk using HPLC-ICP-MS. The method was validated by analyzing NIST SRM 1953, comparing the values obtained with the total mercury concentrations obtained via ICP-MS analysis.&nbsp;Hg2+ and MeHg+ were detected in all the samples of foremilk and hindmilk provided monthly for 4&nbsp;months by the 10 participants. MeHg+ concentrations differed significantly between foremilk and hindmilk samples but not between samples obtained 2 and 5&nbsp;months postpartum. In contrast, Hg2+ concentrations in the foremilk and hindmilk did not differ and were correlated with selenium concentrations. Breast milk composition differs significantly between colostrum, transitional milk, and mature milk. Hence, a large cross-sectional study using our method will reveal the level of infant exposure to each chemical species of mercury.

Agilent Technologies (ASMS 2024): Automated Sample Preparation and Analysis of OCPs in Drinking Water</h4><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/po_pal3_rtc_ocd_drinking_water_asms_2024_mp387_en_agilent_061eb8d44c.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>The Analysis of Organochlorine Pesticides (OCP’s) in drinking water is generally performed by manual liquid-liquid extraction with a concentration step performed before analysis by triple quadrupole GC/MS. Traditionally, volumes as high as 500 and 1000 mL are used and at least 100 to 200 mL of water sample is required with often over 25 mL of extraction solvent needed to extract. Hence, an additional concentration step via evaporation becomes needed.<h5>Benefits of Automation</h5>Sample preparation automation provides multiple benefits:<ul><li>Less room for human error – can be left unattended to run 24/7 if desired. For this method, the user only needs to add salt and sample (15 mL) to the headspace vial – the rest of the process is fully automated.</li><li>Higher reproducibility as the sample prep robot will perform actions consistently for each sample.</li><li>Significantly less sample and solvents are used resulting in a more sustainable approach.</li><li>Lower costs and higher throughput.</li></ul><h5>Sample Extraction Steps</h5><ul><li>ISTD Spiking: Using a dedicated (for ISTD) liquid tool with a 10 µL syringe, 2 µL of ISTD (from a 2 mL autosampler vial) were pipetted into 20 mL headspace (HS) vials containing sample/standards.&nbsp;</li><li>Solvent Addition: 2 mL of 90:10 isooctane:ethyl acetate solvent was added to the sample vial (20 mL HS)&nbsp;</li><li>Extraction: The vial was then transported to the vortex mixer and then vortexed at 2,000 rpm for 60 seconds&nbsp;</li><li>Sample Injection: Using a dedicated (for sample extracts) liquid tool with a 10 µL syringe, 1 µL of analyte protectants and then 8 µL of sample extract were injected onto the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=8890%2F7010">8890/7010</a> Series GC/TQ</li></ul><h5>Conclusions</h5><ul><li>Excellent sensitivity for OCP’s ( &lt; 0.01 ug/L) was achieved with only 15ml of water taken.&nbsp;</li><li>The extraction has been shown to be reproducible and robust requiring limited analyst supervision.&nbsp;</li><li>The automation is embedded within MassHunter requiring no additional software for the control and sequencing of the analysis.&nbsp;</li><li>The incorporation of mid-column backflush has resulted in consistent responses and retention times throughout the sequences and has minimized contamination of the MS source. The additional JetClean option has resulted in no manual source cleaning being required to date.&nbsp;</li><li>The automation has been configured to enable minimal analyst interaction by the incorporation of a diluter/dispenser into a large 2.5 L solvent bottle. This way non-mixed solvents can be used together with a fast wash station that means that no contamination will result from waste solvents.</li></ul><h4>2. Shimadzu: Analysis of THC Metabolites in Urine by GC-MS/MS</h4><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00860_en_38536374fa.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul><h5>User Benefits</h5><ul><li>MRM in GC-MS/MS uses two-stage mass filtering which allows for the detection of THC and its metabolites without interference from impurities in urine.</li><li>Using MRM creates a method sensitive enough to detect THC and its metabolites in urine at 1 ng/mL that can be used to quantify trace levels of cannabis metabolites in urine.</li></ul>Cannabis is a long-abused drug with pharmacological effects that include hallucinations, pain relief, and sedation. While the main psychoactive component of cannabis, delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), issubject to restrictions in many countries worldwide, another active component called cannabidiol (CBD) is not regulated in many countries. Cannabidiol has no major side effects and is starting to be used as a seizure medication, in cosmetics, and in foods. Restrictions on cannabis are undergoing continuous reforms with some countries tightening restrictions and others relaxing them. Japan has recently revised its laws to tighten regulations on cannabis use and a portion of these laws went into effect in December 2024. Δ9-THC in cannabis is metabolized in the body and principally excreted in urine and feces as the metabolites Δ9-OH-THC, Δ9‐THC-COOH, and their glucuronide conjugates. 1) Based on this, urine must be analyzed for these metabolites to prove cannabis use. This Application News investigated four methods of sample pretreatment that could be used to measure THC and its metabolites in urine and presents results obtained using the sample pretreatment method selected by this investigation in a quantitative analysis by GC-MS/MS (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=GCMS-TQ+8040+NX">GCMS-TQ 8040 NX</a> Triple Quadrupole Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer).<h5>Conclusions</h5>This Application News investigated the simultaneous analysis of cannabis constituents Δ8-THC and Δ9-THC, and their metabolites Δ8-OH-THC, Δ9-OH-THC, Δ8-THC-COOH, and Δ9‐THC-COOH in urine. Four different extraction methods were tested for the sample pretreatment step. A liquid-liquid extraction method provided the best recovery among the four extraction methods tested and the optimized sample pretreatment workflow resulted in an analytical method with adequate sensitivity and quantitative accuracy. GC-MS/MS was used to create a method sensitive enough to readily detect target compounds at 1 ng/mL in urine that is suitable for the quantitative analysis of trace amounts of cannabis metabolitesin urine.<h4>3. It consists of a cereal-water mixture or “mash”, which undergoes fermentation followed by distillation and cask maturation, creating a unique flavor profile over a long and complex aging process. Depending on the grain used, cask condition (new vs. old, charred vs. uncharred) and distillery process, significant variability in a whisky's chemical composition can occur. As a result of these distinguishing features, whisky is a sought-after commodity both for consumption and economic purposes, where investments in whisky have far outperformed stocks and other commodities such as gold in recent years.In this study, the performance of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=Orbitrap+Exploris+GC+240">Orbitrap Exploris GC 240 high resolution accurate mass (HRAM) </a>mass spectrometer together with the headspace solid phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) for chemical profiling of whisky is demonstrated. With high mass accuracy (&lt;1ppm) and resolution capabilities (up to 240,000 mass resolution full width half maximum (FWHM) at m/z 200), the Orbitrap Exploris GC 240 mass spectrometer provides unsurpassed selectivity towards compound identification. Differences in chemical profiles are easily visualized using the statistical tools incorporated into the Thermo Scientific™ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=Compound+Discoverer">Compound Discoverer</a>™ software and a streamlined identification achieved using the Thermo Scientific Flavor and Fragrances HRAM library together with the NIST nominal mass library. Switching between electron impact (EI) and positive chemical ionization (PCI) for molecular ion identification/ confirmation is achieved quickly without system venting using the Thermo Scientific™ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=NeverVent%E2%84%A2">NeverVent™</a> technology. This provides analysts accurate identification of the chemical profile in whisky for product quality control and differentiates between whiskies suspected of fraudulent activities (e.g., additives and mislabeling).<h4>Experimental conditions&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrument and method setup&nbsp;</h5>Headspace extraction and injection of whisky samples was performed using the Thermo Scientific™ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=TriPlus%E2%84%A2+RSH+SMART">TriPlus™ RSH SMART autosampler</a> equipped with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=SMART+SPME+Arrow">SMART SPME Arrow</a> 1.1 mm DVB/C-WR/PDMS fiber (P/N 36SA11T3-SM). Incubation and extraction were performed online followed by sample injection/ desorption. After sample injection, the SPME Arrow fiber was re-conditioned at high temperature under nitrogen using a SPME conditioning station to avoid sample carryover between injections. Further details surrounding the SPME Arrow operating parameters can be found in Table 1. A Thermo Scientific™ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=TRACE%E2%84%A2+1610+GC">TRACE™ 1610 GC</a> equipped with a Thermo Scientific™ TraceGOLD™ TG-624SilMS (30 m × 0.25 mm i.d. × 1.4 µm film) capillary column (P/N 26085-3320) was used to perform the chromatographic separation. Oven program conditions can be found in Table 1. Data acquisition was carried out in full scan analysis using both EI and PCI with the Orbitrap Exploris GC 240 mass spectrometer. Additional MS method parameters are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. External mass calibration was performed prior to analysis, while characteristic ions representing column bleed were used as lock masses when scanning in EI to perform internal mass calibration. Sample acquisition and qualitative processing were performed using Thermo Scientific™ <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=Chromeleon%E2%84%A2">Chromeleon™</a> version 7.3.2 Chromatography Data System (CDS) software. Unknown analysis and identification were performed using Compound Discoverer version 3.3 software.<h4>Conclusion</h4>The complex and versatile chemical profile existing among the various whisky types causes challenges in identifying genuine and fraudulent whiskies. Targeted analytical approaches can be applied but cannot provide a complete picture of the chemical composition, potentially missing fraudulent clues. These agencies publish pharmaceutical monographs for drug developers and manufacturers, helping them to maintain consistent quality standards throughout the research, development, and manufacturing processes. Major pharmacopoeias, such as the USP, European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.), British Pharmacopoeia (BP), Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP), and Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (ChP) publish pharmaceutical monographs as part of their official compendia. Monographs provide methods for the quantitative determination of pharmaceutical substances, including the measurement of impurities within acceptable limits, and are essential for compliance with regulatory requirements. UV-Vis spectroscopy is a commonly specified technique in various pharmaceutical monographs.&nbsp;According to good manufacturing practices (GMP), any techniques that are used to analyze pharmaceutical substances must be evaluated to determine their suitability under actual conditions of use. The USP provides general information on the verification of compendial procedures in USP General Chapter &lt;1226&gt; Verification of Compendial Procedures and specific guidance on UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques in USP General Chapter &lt;857&gt; Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy.1,2&nbsp;In a previous application note, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=Cary+60+UV-Vis">Cary 60 UV Vis spectrophotometer</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=Cary+WinUV">Cary WinUV software</a> performed the measurements that are required by many of the verification tests outlined in USP &lt;857&gt;.3 This study provides an example of how the Cary 60 UV-Vis fitted with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=1&amp;search=18-cell+multicell+changer">18-cell multicell changer</a> can be used for method verification for the quantification of iron in magnesium sulfate per the USP Magnesium Sulfate monograph.4<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>An Agilent Cary 60 UV-Vis with an 18-cell changer was used to demonstrate how a UV-Vis compendial procedure from a USP monograph can be verified. The Agilent Cary WinUV software and 18-cell changer automated the multiple replicate measurements required by the USP validation tests, reducing the workload of the operator. The validation tests included confirmation of measurement accuracy, precision, specificity, and determination of the quantitation limit.&nbsp;After verifying the method, the Cary 60 UV-Vis was used to measure the content of iron in two magnesium sulfate samples following the USP Magnesium Sulfate compendial procedure. The results were within the acceptance criteria for that material of &lt; 0.5 μg/g.&nbsp;The Cary 60 UV-Vis is ideal for routine pharma quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) workflows and R&amp;D applications. Bruker Optics: Used Lubcricating Oil Analysis by FT-IR: An Overview</h4><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/AN_M57_Lubricating_Oil_Analysis_EN_1_1962299e4c.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Oil analysis by FT-IR is a simple method to detect dilution, degredation or illegal additives in all types of oils.&nbsp;Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy utilizes the interaction of invisible infrared radiation and matter. This yields valuable molecular information and allows the identification of chemicals in a few seconds without consumables or additional chemicals. Generally, this can be used on solids, liquids and gases and of course industrial oils. This method has been widely accepted and is used by automotive industries, drilling companies, legal authorities and even at F1-racing events.<h5>Why are in-service lubricating oils tested?&nbsp;</h5>To readily assess the lubricant’s performance, testing and diagnosis of oils in-service is necessary. This is especially important to prolong engine life and avoid sudden and unforeseen damages to the engine. Lubricating oils reduce friction and protect the engine’s moving parts from wear and corrosion. In diesel engines, the oil must also suspend soot particle resulting from incomplete fuel combustion to avoid depositions.&nbsp;If the lubricant is saturated, performance decreases significantly. The analysis of in-service oils also provides information about engine-related functions to identify component failures or harmful operating conditions.&nbsp;<h5>Advantages of FT-IR in oil analysis&nbsp;</h5>For one, the low cost of modern <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=10&amp;search=FTIR">Fourier transform (FT-IR) systems</a>, along with the ability to obtain high-quality data rapidly has made this technique very attractive. Especially in routine analysis, there is a strong demand for for quick results in routine monitoring of in-service lubricant. FT-IR has already started to gradually replace replace various time-consuming and tedious traditional wet chemical and physical analysis methods.&nbsp;Therefore, the ASTM adopted a standard practice E2412 titled; “Standard Practice for Condition Monitoring of Used Lubricants by Trend Analysis Using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometry” illustrating the increased application of FT-IR spectroscopy in this field.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>FT-IR is a reliable and valid approach to oil analysis, that not only allows you to access a lot of information with a single measurement, but also simplifies the procedure. Infrared spectrometers come in various shapes and configurations and Bruker even offers a dedicated used oil analysis kit.<h4>4. Shimadzu: Major Component and Elemental Impurity Analysis of Lithium-Ion Cathode Materials Using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=ICPE-9820">ICPE-9820</a></h4><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00817_en_4a5fd66aba.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>User Benefits:<ul><li>The system uses a mini torch that consumes less argon, thus reducing running costs.</li><li>Measurements are stable with minimum long-term and daily fluctuations.</li><li>Post-measurement addition of elements and wavelengths is simple, enabling quantification at optimal wavelengths without remeasurement.</li></ul>Lithium-ion secondary batteries (LIBs) are used in many products, such as smartphones and electric vehicles, because they are small and lightweight yet offer high capacity or energy density. However, there is a risk of ignition and heat generation, makes ensuring safety a critical issue. The elemental composition of cathode materials is known to be one of the most important factors that affect energy density and safety. In this Application News, the main elements and impurity elements of LIBs cathode material were analyzed using the ICPE9820 (Fig. 1). Validation tests on the analysis values and stability tests (2.5 hours variation, 5 days daily variation) on the main components were performed.<h5>Analysis Wavelength of Elemental Impurity Analysis</h5>The wavelength recommended by the ICPEsolution software as the analysis wavelength was chosen. ICPEsolution enables users to identify recommended wavelengths that have a low background equivalent concentration (BEC) and are generally less susceptible to interference from the wavelengths registered for each element (Fig. 5). The sample for elemental impurity analysis was analyzed with the calibration standards shown in Table 6.&nbsp;Since the cathode materials contain a large amount of Li, Co, Ni, and Mn, spectroscopic interference from these major elements may occur during the analysis of elemental impurities. Therefore, it is important to select the optimal wavelength, one that is unaffected by spectral interference.&nbsp;The 202.548 nm and 213.856 nm wavelengths of Zn have high sensitivity with low BEC (Fig. 5), but the peaks of Ni and Co overlap at 202.548 nm, and the peaks of Ni overlap at 213.856 nm (Fig. 6).&nbsp;As shown in Fig. 5, ICPEsolution allows users to check which element peaks are likely to overlap using the “Peak Search” function. In addition, the “All-wavelength Data Acquisition” function allows data readout after measurement. Even if the major components are unknown, qualitative analysis of all elements can be added after the measurement, and it is easy to determine which elements are contained in large amounts. Using this function, users can confirm and quantify the profile of a wavelength that has not been registered without needing to re-measure. In this study, 206.200 nm, which is free from interference, was used for quantitative analysis of Zn (Fig. 7). S has relatively low BEC at 180.731 nm and 182.037 nm, but Mn interferes with both. At 182.625 nm, there is slight B interference B, but since it was confirmed that the concentration of B in the sample was below the detection limit, 182.625 nm was used.&nbsp;If the sample contains a large amount of B, it is better to perform inter-element correction at 180.731 nm, where the Mn interference is relatively small. With ICPEsolution, the user can easily perform inter-element correction by simply selecting the elements and wavelengths to be used for the operation. Care must be taken in cases where the correction amount is much larger than the quantitative value of S since an error is likely to occur (Fig. 8).<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In this Application News, the ICPE-9820 was used to analyze the major components and elemental impurities in LIBs cathode materials. Analysis of the major components showed that the results were stable over long periods and showed little day-to-day variation. Good results were obtained in the analysis of elemental impurities in spike recovery tests, and the validity of the analysis was confirmed. In addition, elements and wavelengths were added after the measurement, and it was possible to determine the appropriate analytical wavelength without re-measurement. The ICPE-9820 offers both low running costs and stable measurements. In addition, convenient functions such as the acquisition of all wavelength data make it possible to efficiently analyze even samples with high spectral interference. Therefore, the ICPE-9820 is the ideal instrument for elemental analysis of LIBs cathode materials.
