Typically, groundwater is used as a source for drinking water and irrigation purposes. Rain and snow can also leach various substances, such as sodium salts, from landfills into groundwater. This so-called leachate is considered hazardous to the environment and can contaminate groundwater reserves. This Application Note describes sodium analysis in water (mineral water as well as leachate) using the separate sodium-selective electrode, also known as the Na-ISE. All samples in this study were determined by standard addition. The method is based on the standard AOAC 976.25.The standard addition (STDADD) is recommended for undefined or complex sample matrices. In the standard addition method, a defined amount of the ion of interest is added to a known volume of sample (in several steps). The unknown concentration can be calculated from the resulting potential differences between the sample and the sample with added standard solution. This calculation is performed automatically by modern ion meters or software such as OMNIS.&nbsp;<h5>EXPERIMENTAL&nbsp;</h5>An <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=56&amp;search=OMNIS+Advanced+Titrator">OMNIS Advanced Titrator</a> and an OMNIS Dosing Module equipped with a separate sodium-selective electrode were used to measure sodium in water samples (Figure 1).<h5>CONCLUSION&nbsp;</h5>Results of sodium measurement in water with the sodium ion-selective electrode are fast, reproducible, and accurate. In principle, this method can be used for any type of wastewater or sewage water for different sodium concentrations. Appropriate dilution or clarification (e.g., filtration or centrifugation) may be required prior to analysis. Handling the Na-ISE is user friendly and there is no need to condition the electrode, which means it is immediately ready for use. Furthermore, this method conforms to AOAC 976.25. The analytical system presented in this application offers users flexibility combined with high-end software. The measuring range of the separate polymer Na-ISE lies between 5 × 10–6 mol/L and 1 mol/L Na+ (corresponds to approximately 0.11 mg/L Na+ ) and is suitable for a wide range of different samples, from foodstuffs to pharmaceutical products and cosmetics. As well as improving the precision and speed of sodium determinations, OMNIS delivers results that are equal to or better than other established titration systems.<h3>3. Hikiji et al. 1) reported 30 drugs that are at high risk of causing death due to overdose. In addition, Asano et al. 2) reported the top 20 psychotropic drugs left in the places where bodies were discovered, and according to that, sleeping drugs, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, and antipsychotic drugs were particularly common. Many of the drugs listed in both reports are the same and are considered important targets for forensic toxicological analysis. For this reason, forensic toxicological analysis requires a workflow that can reliably identify the important related componentswithout any omissions.&nbsp;This application introduces an example of drug qualitative screening using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=LCMS+-9030">LCMS -9030</a> quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF) mass spectrometer, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=LabSolutions+Insight+Discovery">LabSolutions Insight Discovery</a>, and “<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=High+Resolution+Accurate+Mass+Library+for+Forensic+Toxicology+Ver.+2%E2%80%9D">High Resolution Accurate Mass Library for Forensic Toxicology Ver. 2”</a> (Fig. 1).<h5>Qualitative Screening Using LCMS-9030</h5>The library similarity and mass errors of 25 drugs added to bovine whole blood are shown in Table 3, the measured spectra of some drugs in Fig. 3, and the MS chromatogram of the acquired data in Fig. 4. Although there were many matrixderived peaks in the sample and some drugs had retention times that were very close to each other, all the spiked drugs were identified, and their library similarity was 82-99. The difference between the measured and theoretical precursor ion m/z valuesfor each drug was within 1 ppm.<h5>Conclusion</h5>Qualitative screening with LCMS-9030 was performed on bovine whole blood spiked with 25 drugs. All the spiked drugs were identified with a library similarity of more than 80 and high mass accuracy from a sample containing many matrix-derived components. These results demonstrate the usefulness of the LCMS-9030 and the “High Resolution Accurate Mass Library for Forensic ToxicologyVer. 2” in the qualitative screeningof drugs.<h3>4. Agilent Technologies: Py-GC/MS/MS Microplastic Analysis of Samples Containing Interfering Substances</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_microplastic_analysis_pygcmsms_5994_7637en_agilent_1_6caa53726f.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Microplastics, defined as plastic fragments with a particle size of 5 mm or less, originate from various products, such as cosmetics, clothing, food packaging, and plastic waste. Microplastics have been detected in water, soil, and air environments,5 as well as in food and within living organisms.7 Consequently, numerous analytical techniques are being developed to investigate the extent of microplastic contamination and its impacts.&nbsp;Microplastics can be seen with the naked eye or a microscope when the particle size is large, but observation is difficult when the size is small, and quantitative analysis by type of plastic is difficult. Techniques using spectroscopic instruments, such as IR or Raman, or thermal analysis instruments such as Py-GC/MS or thermal extraction desorption (TED)-GC/MS have been widely used.1, 2, 3, 4 IR and Raman spectroscopy can be used to identify the type, shape, size, and count of microplastics on filters after sample preparation and filtration. These techniques rely on spectroscopic analysis of the microplastics retained on the filter. For Py-GC/MS or TED-GC/MS, the microplastics collected on the filter are thermally decomposed, and the resulting compounds are analyzed with GC/MS, allowing for the quantification of each type of microplastic8 (by weight). In particular, Py-GC/MS has recently been recognized as an ASTM International method11 and is widely applied as an analytical method for analyzing microplastics in drinking water.12 In the case of environmental samples or food samples with complex matrices, additional matrix effects can negatively impact analytical performance or result in thermal decomposition products that cannot be separated from microplastic thermal decomposition product peaks, causing interference and overlapping with target ions.6&nbsp;In this application, we applied Py-GC/MS/MS (MRM mode) to microplastic analysis to determine whether accurate quantitative analysis of microplastics is possible even in samples containing complex matrices.<h5>Instrument and analysis conditions&nbsp;</h5>The instruments used were a Frontier Lab pyrolyzer (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=42&amp;search=Py-3030D">Py-3030D</a>) and an Agilent <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8890+GC">8890 GC</a> coupled to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7000E+triple+quadrupole+gc%2Fms">7000E triple quadrupole GC/MS system</a>. The temperature of the pyrolyzer was set to 600 °C, as shown in Table 1, and the components produced by thermal decomposition were passed through the GC inlet (320 °C, split 50:1), cryo-focused by liquid nitrogen applied to the front end of deactivated metal capillary column (UA-5, 30 m x 0.25 mm x 0.25 µm) in the Microjet Cryo Trap, separated by the GC oven temperature program after about 3 minutes, and transferred to the mass spectrometer. The analysis conditions are shown in Tables 1, 2, 3, and 4.<h4>Results and discussion</h4><h5>Chromatogram</h5>Chromatograms resulting from the analysis of the microplastics calibration standard (MPCS) that includes 11 types of microplastics are shown in Figure 1 for both Scan and MRM modes. The Scan mode total ion chromatogram (TIC) can be processed into extracted ion chromatograms (EIC) to confirm the target ion (m/z) for each indicator peak, as seen on the left side of Figure 1. The MRM TIC and EIC are shown on the right side of Figure 1. As can be seen, MRM mode can reduce matrix interference and enhance selectivity. Calibration curves can be created using either Scan or MRM mode using concentration of the MPCS.<h4>Conclusion</h4>We have established a quantitative analysis method using Py-GC/MS/MS (MRM mode) for complex matrix samples and trace levels of microplastics.&nbsp;Under the established Py-GC/MS/MS (MRM mode) conditions, the linearity of the calibration curves generated for the 11 types of microplastics, ranging from several hundred ng to several µg, was excellent (R² &gt; 0.99). Compared to Scan (Target EIC) mode, noise is reduced by two to several times when analyzed in MRM mode, and accordingly, the S/N ratio is increased when analyzed in MRM mode, enabling the detection of microplastics with better selectivity. In addition, when there is matrix interference during sample analysis, more accurate quantitative results can be obtained by applying the MRM mode, and Py-GC/MS/MS (MRM mode) can be very useful for quantifying complex matrix samples and trace levels of microplastics.<h3>2. MDCW: Analysis of (micro-)plastic-associated chemicals released into marine environments by comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry</h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/MDC_2025_Poster_d31ebb1c76.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Plastic materials contain many different chemicals, which include functional additives as well as trace levels of non-intentionally added substances. Plastic released into the environment acts as a vector for these chemicals, which may cause harm to exposed organisms. The complex mixture of chemical classes and concentrations within plastics is a challenge for analysis, which can be addressed through the use of multidimensional analytical approaches.&nbsp;Here, the chemical composition of different polymer samples was analysed using comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Ultrasonication assisted extractions with solvent represents a ‘worse-case-scenario’ in relation to environmental leaching, and provides a starting point for non-target analysis of microplastic leaching in marine environments.<h4>Results</h4>All the virgin polymer samples released chemicals under organic extraction. As shown in Figure 1, the Hexane DCM:MeOH MeOH EtOAc number of compounds released by each polymer was influenced by the solvent used for the extraction. Additionally, the conventional polymers released a higher number of chemicals than the biopolymers, particularly LDPE and PP.&nbsp;The high number of compounds released by LDPE and PP is due to the release of polymer-derived alkanes. The use of GC ×GC enabled separation and identification of other plastic-associated compounds from the alkane series (see respective chromatograms). In contrast, the other polymers released a range of compound classes. Some of the compounds identified in the extracts, for example phthalates, are detrimental to both human and environmental health.&nbsp;<h4>Conclusion</h4>Chemical extracts from several polymer samples demonstrated that virgin polymer samples contain chemicals which are not chemically bonded to the bulk polymer material – and therefore have potential to be released into the environment. Future leaching studies can be informed by the chemical identifications made, and increase the confidence that those compounds identified in leachates did originate from the respective polymer.<h3>3. They are known as volatile organic compounds that contribute to aroma. However, recent studies in various countries have reported health concerns regarding these compounds and monitoring of furan and alkylfuran has been recommended in the EU1) .&nbsp;These compounds are frequently measured using the HSGC/MS method, which is convenient and effective when present at relatively high concentrations. However, for samples containing low concentrations, pretreatment for concentration is necessary. This Application News article describes a method using an SPME Arrow and GC-MS/MS system that enables more consistent analysis even at trace concentrations in complex matrix samples.<h4>Instrument Configuration and Analytical Conditions</h4>The analysis was performed using an AOC-6000 Plus multifunctional autosampler and a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMS-TQ8040+NX">GCMS-TQ8040 NX </a>triple quadrupole gas chromatograph mass spectrometer system (Fig. 1). The AOC-6000 Plus is a multifunctional autosampler that can automatically switch between various sample injection methods, such as liquid injection, headspace injection, and solid-phase microextraction (SPME), depending on the sample and purpose (Fig. 2). In this analysis, an SPME Arrow, which offers improved durability compared to a traditional SPME fiber, was used forsample analysis. When using sampling methods involving concentration, such as the SPME method, matrix-derived impurities may also be concentrated, making it difficult to improve sensitivity due to interference from impurities. In this analysis, high sensitivity for analyzing furan in processed foods was achieved by using the SPME method in combination with the MRM mode of the triple quadrupole GC-MS system.<h4>Comparison of SIM and MRM</h4>To confirm the improvement in selectivity with MRM, analysis using the SIM mode was also conducted. Generally, the MRM mode of a triple quadrupole GC-MS system offers better selectivity compared to the SIM mode, leading to higher sensitivity and more consistent detection. Fig. 5 shows the SIM and MRM chromatograms of four components detected in baby food. While each component was detectable with both modes, the MRM mode provided higher selectivity, whereas the SIM mode was more susceptible to interference from impurities. Therefore, manual peak integration or changes to the quantitative ions may be required in the SIM mode depending on the sample.<h4>Conclusion</h4>Quantitative analysis of furan and alkylfuran in processed food was conducted using an SPME Arrow and a triple quadrupole GC-MS system. The AOC-6000 Plus multifunctional autosampler allows for highly sensitive and reproducible quantification of furan compounds using the SPME Arrow method. Additionally, by enhancing selectivity with the MRM mode of the triple quadrupole GC-MS system, more reliable analytical results were obtained.<h3>4. This overview page allows a user to quickly determine if the system is ready to run or requires attention.&nbsp;For more information on instrument status, there is a detailed view for each part of the system. This next level view shows how many injections have been performed for the various GC consumables, the lifetime of the MS detector and filament, and when the last tune was performed. Figure 2 shows an example of the GC and MS parameters and how they are monitored. Each parameter is represented as a counter gauge. As the usage increases, the gauge changes color to quickly notify the user of any maintenance that is required or will be needed soon. This allows users to plan maintenance in advance to fit it around their schedule and workload. SmartStatus instrument tracking can be monitored directly in Chromeleon CDS, and consumables usage can also be monitored directly on the TRACE 1610 GC touch screen through the dedicated instrument health icon, as shown in Figure 3.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>SmartStatus software is intelligent and data-driven, allowing users to make informed decisions on when to perform maintenance on their GC and GC-MS systems. This study aims to develop an environmentally friendly analytical method for detecting organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in drinking water. It combines dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) using a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) with GC-MS/MS analysis. The NADES, composed of DL-menthol and decanoic acid, is safe, biodegradable, and cost-effective.Key experimental parameters were optimized using multivariate analysis to enhance extraction efficiency. The negative effects of pesticides on human health can be prevented by monitoring of the food, water, and air. Hence the monitoring of low-level pesticide residues in bottled drinking water is a global concern [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib30">[30]</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib31">[31]</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib32">[32]</a>]. However, the monitoring itself requires and generates a huge amount of hazardous organic wastes with obvious harmful effects on the environment and humans. So, efforts have been made to lower the limits of detection of the target analytes by employing environmentally benign sample preparation processes such as stir bar extraction [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib33">33</a>] or dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib23">23</a>]. In this view the development of new green solvents which are aimed to reduce or fully eliminate the hazardous wastes can be regarded as very worthful.Therefore, the current research aims to develop a new and sensitive analytical method using a combination of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) assisted by vortex and using an environmentally friendly extractant (i.e., NADES: DL-menthol and decanoic acid in molar ratio 2:1) for the preconcentration of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides followed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS).<h4>2. Materials and methods</h4><h5>2.2. Instrumentation, apparatus and software</h5>Experiments were performed using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?manufacturerItems=2&amp;search=GC-MS%2FMS+TSQ+9000">GC-MS/MS TSQ 9000</a> (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA) with electron ionisation (EI) at 70&nbsp;eV, equipped with a triple quadrupole mass filter and Programmable Temperature Vaporising (PTV) injector. The system was operated by Excalibur software 4.1. Extract with volume of 1&nbsp;μL was injected manually with a 10&nbsp;μL glass syringe. The study was conducted utilizing a PTV glass liner with Three Baffles, 1&nbsp;mm ID, 2.75&nbsp;mm OD, 120&nbsp;mm Length (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA). The PTV injector was used in split mode (split ratio 50:1), starting with 65&nbsp;°C initial inlet temperature followed by gradient heating at 14.5&nbsp;°C sec−1 to 290&nbsp;°C. GC column TG-SQC 15&nbsp;m&nbsp;×&nbsp;0.25&nbsp;mm, 0.25&nbsp;μm film thickness (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA) was used for chromatographic separation. The oven temperature program was as follows: 120&nbsp;°C – held for 1&nbsp;min; increased at the rate of 40&nbsp;°C min−1 to 155&nbsp;°C, rating 4&nbsp;°C min−1 to 187&nbsp;°C, rating 1&nbsp;°C min−1 to 194&nbsp;°C and rating 25&nbsp;°C min−1 to a final temperature of 290&nbsp;°C and held for 10&nbsp;min. The solvent delay time and total analysis time were 2.5&nbsp;min and 31&nbsp;min, respectively. Helium (purity 99.9999 %) at a flow rate of 1.2&nbsp;mL&nbsp;min−1 was used as a carrier gas. The transfer line and the ion source temperatures were set at 250&nbsp;°C and 230&nbsp;°C, respectively.A Vortex Lab Dancer (IKA®, Germany), a centrifuge KA-1000 (Jiangsu Zhengji Instruments Co., Ltd., China), FT-IR VERTEX 70 Spectrometer (Bruker, Germany) and a pH meter with a combined glass electrode SensoDirect pH 110 (Lovibond® Water Testing, Germany) were used in the study.The software Statistica® version 14.1 (TIBCO, Santa Clara, USA) was used in the optimisation procedure and graphical visualization of the results. AGREEprep software was applied for the evaluation of the greenness metric of the developed method.<h4>3. Results and discussion</h4><h5>3.1. Assessment of the matrix effects in GC-MS/MS</h5>To the best of our knowledge, the matrix effects provoked by NADES (MNT:DA) as a matrix medium analysed by GC-MS/MS have not been previously studied. The influence of MNT:DA on the instrumental sensitivity was evaluated by measurements of two sets of 3 standard solutions (with concentrations up to 2000&nbsp;μg&nbsp;L−1 in the final solution) prepared in acetonitrile as well as in NADES (matrix-matched medium). The slopes of the calibration curves were compared according to Equation <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#fd1">(1)</a>. The standard deviations of the slopes were also assessed, and the propagated standard deviation of the corresponding slope ratios was further calculated.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#tbl1">Table 1</a> shows the derived slope ratio values, as well as the combined uncertainty. The enhancement was in the range of 27–74 % (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#tbl1">Table 1</a>), indicating a favourable effect of the MNT:DA medium during the GC-MS/MS analysis. As a general trend, it can be seen that the longer the retention time of the target analyte, the higher sensitivity is achieved using NADES as a matrix solution. A possible explanation for this “matrix-induced response enchantment effect” could be a reduction of the thermal stress when the target analytes are passing through the GC liner [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib35">35</a>,<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib36">36</a>]. Such favourable matrix impact was also seen when employing several types of liners for pesticide detection using a combination of cloud point extraction with Triton X-100 and GC-MS or GC-MS/MS [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib37">37</a>].<h5>3.2. Optimisation of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction</h5>Considering the simultaneous determination of 19 target analytes (organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides) and the number of variables influencing the extraction step a multivariate study [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib38">38</a>] was used for extraction variables optimisation. This optimisation approach follows the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#bib39">39</a>] to reduce significantly the number of experiments, consumption of samples, reagents, energy and time. An approach at two steps has been used for the multivariate optimisation of the experimental factors: a Plackett-Burman design, to identify between significant and non-significant factors as a screening method followed by a central composite design (CCD) to obtain the optimal values for the significant factors. Seven factors with potential effect on DLLME were evaluated by the Plackett-Burman design: (i) sample volume (6 and 10&nbsp;mL); (ii) NADES volume (50 and 100&nbsp;μL), (iii) sample pH (5 and 7); (iv) extraction time (1 and 3&nbsp;min); (v) centrifugation speed (900 and 1300×g); (vi) centrifugation time (5 and 10&nbsp;min); and (vii) ionic strength, NaCl concentration (0 and 3 %, w v−1). <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#appsec1">Table S4</a> shows the constructed matrix of factors and their values used at each experimental run.The results derived from the Plackett-Burman design for all studied analytes are presented as registered responses (i.e., peak areas) in Table S5 and as Pareto charts of the standardised effects of the factors on Figure S1. The factors showing a significant effect on the registered peak areas of all the analytes were the NADES and the sample volumes. The other five factors have no influence on the DLLME of the studied pesticides. Taking into account the effects from the Pareto charts the following values were set for further experiments: addition of NaCl is not necessary (negative effect), centrifugation speed at 900×g (negative effect) and extraction time 3 min (positive effect). Due to practical reasons, the values of the non-significant factors centrifugation time and pH are set to 5 min (due to the temperature increase with prolonged centrifugation time) and 7 for model solutions or native pH of the analysed drinking water, respectively.Further optimisation of the NADES and sample volumes was performed by applying a central composite design (CCD). The factor values incorporated in the CCD were: (i) sample volume (5.2, 6.0, 8.0, 10.0, and 10.8&nbsp;mL), and (ii) NADES volume (40, 50, 75, 100, and 110&nbsp;μL). The constructed CCD matrix is given in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#appsec1">Table S6</a> and the responses (i.e., peak areas) are shown in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#appsec1">Table S7</a>. The response surface diagrams obtained from CCD for alpha-HCH, Hexachlorobenzene, Chlorpyrifos, Aldrin, Heptachlor and p,p-DDE are shown in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#appsec1">Fig. S2</a>. It was found that the modelled functions for all studied pesticides have similar shapes – the registered peak area increases when the NADES volume is reduced and/or the sample volume is enlarged.Aiming group extraction of the pesticides further a desirability function was calculated according to Equation <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#fd2">(2)</a> and response surface optimisation was applied (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0039914024013468#fig3">Fig. 3</a>).<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Talanta_Volume_282_2025_126967_Fig_3_Desirability_function_response_surface_diagrams_23ad6064be.jpg" alt="Talanta, Volume 282, 2025, 126967: Fig. 3. Conclusions</h4>The NADES-based-DLLME methodology was successfully combined with GC-MS/MS and was applied for the analysis of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in bottled drinking water by direct liquid injections of the NADES extractant phase into the gas chromatographic system. The last does not deteriorate the instrumental measurements in SRM mode allowing selective determination of the target analytes. The proposed analytical method is fast and simple and meets several conceptual green principles such as the miniaturisation of sample preparation, the use of a natural solvent, and the simultaneous quantification of 19 analytes, among others. Besides, the optimisation of the method was carried out by multivariate analysis, minimizing the consumption of sample, reagents and time. The figures of merit of the developed method were evaluated. It is important to highlight that the obtained absolute recoveries for most of the studied pesticides are close to 100 %; the gain in the value of the registered signals for the target analytes in the NADES phase is larger than the volume ratio of the initial and final solution due to positive matrix effect of the DES on the GC-MS/MS system. Finally, the developed method has been successfully applied to analyse drinking water samples, showing just a partial recovery for one out of nineteen studied pesticides (i.e., p,p-DDT).

However, mercury exists in various forms, and the toxicity differs depending on the form. Generally, methyl mercury is more toxic than inorganic mercury and other organic mercury. Evaluating the toxicity in food requires not only analysis as total mercury but also by the form of mercury. LC-ICP-MS, which separates mercury by species using HPLC and detects mercury with high sensitivity using ICP-MS, is an analytical method suitable for the speciation analysis of mercury. In this Application News, speciation analysis of methyl mercury and total mercury in seafood was performed using an LC-ICP-MS system, which connected <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ICPMS-2040%2F2050">ICPMS-2040/2050</a> with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=NEXERA+XS+Inert">Nexera XS inert</a>. Furthermore, we also evaluated the automatic dilution function of the Nexera series autosampler for the speciation analysis of mercury.<h5>Speciation Analysis of Mercury in Seafood</h5>Fig. 4. shows a chromatogram of the seafood (tuna) extraction. Speciation analysis of methyl mercury and total mercury in the seafood was performed following FDA EAM 4.8. Hence, the total mercury was calculated as the sum concentration of inorganic mercury and methyl mercury. The results of the seafood analysis and spike recovery tests are shown in Table 4. Good recoveries were obtained for each component (Methyl mercury 102 %, total mercury 105 %).<h4>Conclusion</h4>In this Application News, speciation analysis of methyl mercury and total mercury in seafood was performed using an LC-ICP-MS system that connected an ICPMS-2040/2050 to a Nexera XS inert according to the conditions in the “LC-ICP-MS Method Package for Mercury Speciation Analysis.” The separation of inorganic mercury, methyl mercury, and ethyl mercury was confirmed by analyzing the calibration standards. Moreover, analysis of methyl mercury and total mercury in seafood was performed. Good spike recoveries indicated that the analysis of methyl mercury and total mercury in seafood can be performed accurately using this system. The automatic dilution function of the Nexera XS inert autosampler was used to create calibration curves for each mercury species. In the validation test, the results for both accuracy and precision were good. This function simplifies the preparation of calibration standards.
