<p><strong>A highly sensitive and selective method was developed for quantifying nano- and microplastics (NMPs) in water, sediments, and biological tissues using pyrolysis gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. Formats and hyperlinks were adapted from the original.</strong></p><p>Global plastic production has surged over the past half-century, rising from approximately 1.3 Mt in 1950 to approximately 359 Mt in 2018. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(1)</a> This increase has led to a growing concern regarding plastic pollution, particularly nano and microplastics (NMPs). Microplastics are generally defined as plastic particles with a maximum dimension of ≤ 5 mm, while nanoplastics typically range from 1 to 1000 nm in size. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(2)</a> NMPs encompass a wide variety of polymer particles that originate either from direct manufacture (e.g., microbeads and synthetic textiles) or from environmental degradation processes (e.g., photooxidation and mechanical abrasion) of larger plastic debris (i.e., macroplastics, &gt;5 mm). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(3)</a></p><p>NMPs are ubiquitous in the environment. They have been detected from Antarctic coast sediments to Arctic ice sheets, the summit of Mt. Everest to the depths of the Mariana Trench, and have been found in organisms across all trophic levels, including humans. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(4−10)</a> The pervasive presence of NMPs has raised significant ecological and human health concerns. NMPs can act as vectors for environmental pollutants. Hydrophobic organic contaminants (e.g., PCBs and PAHs) readily adsorb onto their surfaces, and plastics additives such as phthalates and flame retardants can leach into surrounding media (e.g., water, sediment, tissue). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(11)</a> Even without associated harmful chemicals, the physical presence of NMPs can lead to increased production of reactive oxygen species in cells, resulting in an inflammatory response. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(12)</a> Given the widespread NMP pollution and its complex ecological ramifications, there is a critical need for more robust high-throughput quantitative methods to accurately assess NMPs in diverse matrices.</p><p>Numerous analytical techniques have been employed for the detection and quantification of NMPs, which often combine traditional microscopy with advanced spectroscopic and molecular approaches. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(13)</a> These methods yield either estimates of particle counts or mass-based concentrations normalized to sample volume or weight. Prior to analysis, most methods require extensive chemical or enzymatic digestion and subsequent cleanup steps to isolate plastic particles and reduce matrix complexity. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(14,15)</a> Particle count-based methods encompass optical microscopy, laser diffraction particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(16)</a> These methods provide quantitative estimates of particle abundance across the entire size spectrum of NMPs, and some can also differentiate between plastic types.</p><p>Thermal decomposition coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an increasingly utilized technique for the analysis of NMPs. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17,18)</a> Pyrolysis-based methods thermally decompose plastic polymers in samples under oxygen-free conditions at temperatures exceeding 500 °C generating characteristic volatile fragments. These fragments are then separated by gas chromatography and detected by mass spectrometry with high sensitivity and specificity. As with other analytical techniques, pyrolysis-GC-MS (PyGC-MS) performance can be improved by incorporating sample cleanup steps prior to analysis to remove interfering organic and inorganic constituents. Matrix interference can often lead to misidentification of plastic polymer types and disrupt the pyrolysis process, ultimately compromising analytical accuracy and precision. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(19)</a> For example, lipids in biological tissues can yield similar combustion products to those of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and nylon-66 (N-66). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(20)</a></p><p>Improvements that enable more reliable quantification of NMPs at ultralow concentrations by PyGC-MS include optimized sample treatment methodologies that include the addition of reactants to improve pyrolysis efficiency of plastic polymers, and the application of advanced mass spectrometric methods. Quantification of NMPs at trace levels is often constrained by the minimum weight limits of analytical balances, as calibration relies on the mass of particulate standards. This limitation has been addressed by using inert fillers, such as calcium carbonate (CaCO<sub>3</sub>) or clean quartz sand that are mixed with plastic standards to produce weighable calibration standards down to the nanogram level. While single-quadrupole mass detectors are widely used due to their simplicity and low cost, they offer limited sensitivity and are less sensitive in complex matrices. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(21)</a></p><p>The application of time-of-flight and orbitrap mass spectrometry, as well as modern triple-quadrupole mass detectors, promises improved sensitivity and specificity of NMP quantification in complex matrices. These highly selective detectors enable precise mass determination, reducing ambiguity in peak identification and enhancing the ability to differentiate plastics from natural organic matter commonly present in environmental samples. Time of flight and orbitrap mass spectrometers support untargeted screening and identification of emerging or unknown plastic-related compounds, while triple-quadrupole instruments excel in targeted quantification with high throughput and reproducibility, which are advantageous features for routine monitoring. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(22−24)</a> Compared to traditional methods such as FTIR or Raman spectroscopy, modern mass spectrometric approaches are better equipped to address the challenges posed by complex sample matrices, diverse plastic compositions, and trace-level concentrations, making them essential tools for future NMP analysis. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(25,26)</a></p><p>Here we present a novel analytical method for the identification and quantification of NMPs in diverse environmental matrices that include marine waters, sediments, and biological tissues by using pyrolysis gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (PyGC-qQq-MS). Depending on the sample matrix, NMPs were concentrated through filtration, extraction, or digestion prior to analysis. Gas chromatography with qQq-MS detection using dynamic multiple reaction monitoring (DMRM) mode with an internal standard yielded significantly improved selectivity and sensitivity, enabling accurate and precise quantification of plastic polymers. Method validation demonstrated the robust performance of the method across diverse sample types, with reliable detection of NMPs at amounts of 1–126 ng and in the presence of significant matrix interference.</p><h4><strong>Experimental Section</strong></h4><h5><strong>Pyrolysis GC/MS qQq-MS Analysis</strong></h5><p>Pyrolysis gas chromatography was carried out with a Frontier Auto-Shot AS-2020E sampler and an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=42&amp;search=EGA%2FPY-3030D"><strong>EGA/PY-3030D multishot pyrolyzer</strong></a> connected to an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8890+gc"><strong>Agilent 8890 GC</strong></a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7010B"><strong>7010B qQq-MS</strong></a>. Prior to pyrolysis at 600 °C, GF/F with particulates from water samples or digested tissues were spiked with PFS, which served as an internal standard. Filters were then transferred to Frontier Eco Cups and topped with 5 mg of CaCO<sub>3</sub> and quartz wool to ensure proper packing. Redissolved sediment extracts were transferred directly into the Eco Cup LFs, dried under a gentle stream of N<sub>2</sub>, and packed with CaCO<sub>3</sub> and quartz wool.</p><h4><strong>Results and Discussion</strong></h4><h5><strong>Pyrograms</strong></h5><p>The method was optimized to yield characteristic pyrolytic products of plastic polymers that were well resolved on a Frontier Ultra Alloy 5 column with a linear temperature program. Pyrograms of surface water, vertebrate and invertebrate tissue, and sediment samples, alongside a standard plastic mixture are shown in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.analchem.5c05604#fig3">Figure 3</a>. Pyrolysis temperature was optimized to ensure efficient volatilization of polymers, and specific product ions were chosen to minimize matrix influence that can generate pyrolysis products with similar mass spectra. For each polymer, precursor and product ions were selected to minimize interference from natural polymers and characteristic fragmentation reactions. For polymers that primarily undergo depolymerization (e.g., PE, PP, PS, PMMA), the selected precursor ions corresponded to characteristic oligomeric or monomeric pyrolysis products, and the quantifier ions were derived from simple bond cleavages or rearrangement reactions. For example, PS pyrolysis products included mono, di-, and trimeric units with different retention times. Mono- and dimeric fragments had retention times and mass spectra that overlapped with matrix peaks of similar mass ions, whereas the trimeric PS fragment eluted without interference from matrix components.</p><p><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Anal_Chem_2026_98_1_633_641_Figure_3_Pyrograms_of_A_Calibration_standard_composed_of_homogenized_mixture_containing_12_plastics_of_interest_ee999a5a40.jpg" alt="Anal. Characteristic and abundant molecular precursor ions were identified for each plastic polymer and evaluated against natural polymers to minimize matrix interference. Fragmentation ions derived from these precursor ions were selected based on characteristic fragmentation reactions. The more abundant product ion was used for quantification, whereas the secondary ion was employed as the qualifier to monitor potential coelution with matrix compounds. Fragment losses usually corresponded to the loss of polymer subunits or dehydration reactions. Operating in DMRM mode improved sensitivity by maximizing acquisition time for each targeted analyte. Ratios of quantifier to qualifier ion (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.analchem.5c05604/suppl_file/ac5c05604_si_001.pdf">Table S2</a>), together with retention times, ensured both compound identification and confirmation.</p><p><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Anal_Chem_2026_98_1_633_641_Table_1_Plastic_Polymer_Abbreviations_d796d20f8b.jpg" alt="Anal. PFS was dissolved in toluene and added to the sample prior to pyrolysis. The use of deuterated polystyrene as an internal standard was explored; however, extensive hydrogen–deuterium exchange occurred during pyrolysis, leading to pyrolysis products with variable D/H content. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(31)</a> Similarly, attempts to use brominated polystyrene were unsuccessful, as bromine was readily lost from the polymer chain during pyrolysis, resulting in products indistinguishable from those of PS and others.</p><p>Calibration at &lt;1 mg plastic mass was accomplished using plastic standards dispersed in CaCO<sub>3</sub>. The most consistent results were achieved with commercially available standard kits (e.g., Frontiers), which contain homogeneously distributed plastic polymers in CaCO<sub>3</sub>. Attempts to prepare homogeneous mixtures of plastic polymers in CaCO<sub>3</sub> by ball milling finely ground plastics with CaCO<sub>3</sub> yielded less consistent results than commercial standards.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion</strong></h4><p>This study developed and validated a robust analytical workflow for the detection and quantification of NMPs across a diverse range of environmental matrices. The method demonstrated high sample throughput, robust compensation of matrix interference, and high precision and accuracy. This was accomplished through efficient sample cleanup procedures, internal standard calibration, tandem mass spectrometry, and a correction for lipid interference in the detection of PE, PP, and N-66. The applicability of the method was demonstrated on marine surface waters, sediments and soils, and muscle tissue of fishes and oysters. Results revealed quantifiable concentrations of plastics in all sample types emphasizing the pervasive and persistent nature of plastics in the environment and their bioaccumulation potential across trophic levels. This method provides a critical tool for studying NMPs in the environment, ecological risks, and potential impacts on human health.</p>

Rapid and Sensitive Quantification of Nano- and Microplastics in Water, Sediment, and Biological Tissue by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry with Dynamic Reaction Monitoring

<p><strong>Source attribution of PFAS contamination requires analytical tools capable of distinguishing compounds at trace levels. This study introduces an electrospray ionization Orbitrap-IRMS approach for determining stable carbon isotope ratios of PFAS without analyte decomposition or HF formation, overcoming key limitations of conventional magnetic sector IRMS.</strong></p><p>Using perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as a model compound, full-molecule and intramolecular isotope ratios were measured across 23 commercial samples from multiple suppliers. Formats and hyperlinks were adapted from the original.</strong></p><p>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) make up a broad class of synthetic organofluorine compounds that have been mass-produced since the 1950s. As surfactants with high thermal and chemical stability, PFAS are incorporated into a wide range of industrial and consumer products, including fire-fighting foams, nonstick cookware, and fast-food packaging, among many others. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(1−6)</a> Their prevalence in an expansive array of goods and industrial processes has led to the near-ubiquitous occurrence of PFAS in ecosystems around the globe. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(7−12)</a> This, combined with documented and predicted health consequences from even trace PFAS exposure, has propelled PFAS to the forefront of many environmental efforts, with a focus on reducing PFAS exposure and developing remediation strategies for cleaning up PFAS contamination. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(13−15)</a> Gauging the success of remedial efforts requires tools for monitoring PFAS provenance and transport in the environment. Current environmental forensic methods for PFAS contamination primarily rely on the use of chemical and isomeric fingerprints. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(16)</a> Standard methodologies for testing PFAS concentrations only detect a limited set of congeners, and the prevalence of a limited number of different congeners across multiple industries can result in suspected sources sharing a chemical signature. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17)</a> Major synthesis pathways of PFAS compounds generate isomerically distinct products, with fluorotelomerization producing linear-only isomers, whereas other methods, such as electrochemical fluorination (ECF) and liquid-phase direct fluorination (LPDF), generate some branched isomers in addition to the primarily linear product. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(18)</a> However, the resolving power of isomer ratios can only be used to distinguish between the two different synthesis pathways, and there is currently not sufficient evidence to suggest that two distinct sources of PFAS compounds produced by the same method can be reliably differentiated by this method alone. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(19)</a></p><p>Stable isotope ratios can provide critical source attribution insights for environmental pollutants, including hexachlorocyclohexanes, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(20)</a> organophosphorus pesticides, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(21)</a> and other halogenated organic compounds. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(22)</a> Variations in intrinsic stable isotope ratios can be imparted by the method utilized to synthesize a compound and differences in the isotope ratios of precursors, providing complementary potential to discriminate the origin of pollutants beyond what chemical and isomeric content can provide alone. While magnetic sector isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is the traditional workhorse for stable isotope measurements, there are two key limitations to using IRMS for PFAS analysis. First, elemental analyzer IRMS measurements of common PFAS congeners require ∼1 mg of analyte per analysis, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(23)</a> an unrealistically high quantity in environmental samples where even trace amounts of PFAS pose an environmental concern. Second, IRMS requires complete conversion of the analyte into a simple gas prior to ionization─a challenge for PFAS compounds due to both the stability of the carbon–fluorine bonds and the resultant HF produced, which can damage the instrument.</p><p>Although IRMS-based stable isotope analysis of PFAS may be untenable, emerging techniques in high-resolution mass spectrometry offer an alternative approach. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(24)</a> The ability of Orbitrap-IRMS to measure isotope ratios in inorganic and organic compounds has recently been demonstrated across a variety of applications. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(24−27)</a> In comparison to IRMS, Orbitrap requires smaller sample sizes (pico- to nanomoles versus micromoles C) per analysis. Also, Orbitrap-IRMS measurements can be performed using electrospray ionization (ESI) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(28)</a>─circumventing the otherwise requisite combustion/oxidation step. Further, Orbitrap-IRMS allows for measurements of intramolecular isotope ratios via analysis of ion fragments generated in the ESI source. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(27)</a> The implementation of intramolecular stable isotope analysis has historically been reliant on the use of site-specific natural isotopic fractionation nuclear magnetic resonance (SNIF-NMR) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(29)</a> and pyrolysis gas chromatography IRMS (py-GC-IRMS). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(30)</a> Recent studies have shown great potential with NMR-based isotopic analyses of organofluorines. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(31)</a> However, like magnetic sector IRMS, SNIF-NMR requires significantly more sample than is feasible for most field sampling of PFAS compounds, with analyses typically requiring milligrams of analyte per measurement. Pyrolytic techniques, much like other chemical processes to convert analytes to simple gases, produce HF as a reaction byproduct, making it impractical for intramolecular isotopic analyses of PFAS.</p><p>Here, we sought to test whether Orbitrap-IRMS could be used to obtain high-precision stable isotope measurements of PFAS compounds, using perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as a model compound due to its widespread presence at contaminated sites and prominence in the literature. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(32)</a> We wanted to further evaluate whether PFOA contains sufficient variation in stable isotopic content to make this a useful intrinsic signature for advancing environmental fingerprinting and source attribution efforts. We describe methodological developments used for stable isotope measurements of both PFOA and a decarboxylated fragment of PFOA, and discuss the ability to use stable isotope analysis to fingerprint these samples.</p><h4><strong>2. Methods</strong></h4><h5><strong>2.2. UHPLC-Orbitrap-IRMS Parameters</strong></h5><p>We performed stable carbon isotope measurements of PFOA using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/398"><strong>Vanquish Neo ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatograph</strong></a> (UHPLC; Thermo Fisher Scientific) coupled to an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/402"><strong>Orbitrap Exploris 240 mass spectrometer</strong></a> (Thermo Fisher Scientific). We used an OptaMax NG electrospray ionization source with an HESI LOFLO needle insert. Instrument and probe parameters are shown in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.analchem.5c06168#tbl1">Table 1</a>. For each analysis, 50 μL of 1.0 mg L<sup>–1</sup> analyte was introduced into a 25 μL sample loop and injected into the Orbitrap over a 14.5 min window. No chromatographic columns were utilized, allowing for continuous introduction of analyte to the Orbitrap. To prevent sample broadening, we set an initial flow rate of 10 μL min<sup>–1</sup> for 1 min and then dropped the flow rate to 3 μL min<sup>–1</sup> to begin sample analyses. Over the course of a sample analysis, we applied a gradient flow rate from 3 μL min<sup>–1</sup> to 2.75 μL min<sup>–1</sup>. After this, the introduction flow path was changed using a six-port valve, allowing a reference PFOA-01 solution to be injected via a syringe pump at 3 μL min<sup>–1</sup> from a 1 mL gastight syringe, as shown in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.analchem.5c06168#fig1">Figure 1</a>. Each sample was analyzed in triplicate, followed by a blank injection of 50:50 acetonitrile/methanol and a standard injection of the reference solution (PFOA-01) via UHPLC. Four samples (PFOA-01, PFOA-04, PFOA-13, and PFOA-21) were analyzed across multiple days to assess the long-term measurement precision of the method. Stable carbon isotope ratios were similarly collected for both ESI-generated [PFOA-H]<sup>−1</sup> ions and [PFOA-CO<sub>2</sub>H]<sup>−1</sup> fragment ions. Analysis sequences of [PFOA-CO<sub>2</sub>H]<sup>−1</sup> were performed independently of the [PFOA-H]<sup>−1</sup> measurements.</p><p><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Anal_Chem_2025_97_50_28028_28036_Figure_1_PFAS_samples_were_injected_into_the_mass_spectrometer_via_an_ultrahigh_performance_liquid_chromatograph_6fb93a06de.jpg" alt="Anal. Isomeric Analysis</strong></h5><p>We identified the presence of branched PFOA isomers using a Prominence high-performance liquid chromatography system (HPLC; Shimadzu) coupled to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=55&amp;search=QTRAP+4500"><strong>QTRAP 4500 triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometer</strong></a> (SCIEX). A 0.30 mL min<sup>–1</sup> flow rate carried an injection volume of 4 μL through the HPLC. A <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/2202"><strong>C18 column </strong></a>(50 × 2.0 mm, 5 μm particle size, Gemini) separated linear and branched isomers of PFOA, with samples identified by retention times compared to a calibration standard within ±0.1 min. Phase A of the binary mobile phase consisted of LC-MS grade water (Honeywell) containing 20 mM ammonium acetate (Hampton Research), and Phase B consisted of LC-MS grade acetonitrile (Millipore Sigma Supelco). We set a gradient flow to pre-equilibrate the column with 10% Phase B for 2 min, increased to 60% Phase B from 0.5 to 4.0 min, to 90% Phase B from 4.0 to 7.5 min, and held at this ratio until 10.0 min. The mass spectrometer was operated in negative ionization mode, and PFOA was analyzed using scheduled multiple reaction monitoring mode (sMRM), in which dwell time was optimized to enhance sensitivity. The ion spray voltage was set at 4,500  V and temperature at 600 °C. The declustering potential, entrance potential, collision energy, and collision cell exit potential were set at −35, – 10, −14, and −7 V, respectively. Curtain gas pressure, collision gas pressure, and ion source gas pressure were set at 35, 6, and 50 psi, respectively.</p><h4><strong>3. Results and Discussion</strong></h4><h5><strong>3.3. Isomeric Analyses and Potential Synthesis Insights</strong></h5><p>As synthetic compounds, PFAS are commonly produced from precursors originating from fossil fuel sources. Methane-based sources of carbon are known to have depleted stable isotopic signatures compared to oil/coal-derived carbon. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(38)</a> The combination of isotopic and isomeric signatures in this study indicates that different synthesis methods are associated with different carbon sources. Exclusively linear synthesis of PFOA arises through mechanisms, such as fluorotelomerization, whereas branched isomers are formed through processes such as ECF or LPDF. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(18,19)</a> Isomeric analyses of the PFOA samples used in this study showed that, of the samples where the Δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>[PFOA-H]-1</sub> was greater than −5‰, seven of the nine contained branched isomers, and the remaining two (PFOA-15 and PFOA-24) were exclusively linear. All samples below the −5‰ threshold demonstrated linear-only isomeric patterns. These results track with prior research indicating that more <sup>13</sup>C-enriched samples of PFOA tend to show branched patterns, but not exclusively. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(23)</a> However, the broad sample set provided in this study shows that isotopically depleted samples are exclusively linear (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.analchem.5c06168/suppl_file/ac5c06168_si_001.pdf">Table S.D.1, Figures S.D.1 and S.D.2</a>).</p><p>These isotopic results are consistent with known precursors for the different synthesis methods. In ECF and LPDF, an octanoyl halide is reacted with HF or F<sub>2</sub> to produce PFOA. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(39)</a> Octanoyl halides are often produced from octanoic acid, which is often industrially produced from octanol. Octanol is commonly produced via one of two processes: 1) the hydroformylation and oxidation of petroleum-derived 1-heptene, or 2) through the Ziegler-Alfol process, which reacts four ethenes together in the presence of Al, H<sub>2</sub>, O<sub>2</sub>, and water. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(40,41)</a> In fluorotelomerization, small perfluorinated ethene monomers react to form longer, straight-chain PFAS, where ethene, in turn, is often industrially produced from Fischer–Tropsch reactions with primarily natural gas-derived carbon monoxide. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(32,42)</a> The enriched isotopic signatures indicate that manufacturers utilizing branched-isomer-producing PFOA synthesis processes favor the use of the longer-chain petroleum-derived precursors, whereas the isotopic depletion of the linear isomers indicates that manufacturers using fluorotelomerization often source their precursor materials from methane-derived carbon (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.analchem.5c06168#fig4">Figure 4</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.analchem.5c06168/suppl_file/ac5c06168_si_001.pdf">Table S.C.1</a>). The two PFOA samples with enriched isotopic signatures and exclusively linear isomers could indicate that carbon monoxide used in forming the perfluorinated ethenes originates from incomplete combustion of petroleum or coal.</p><p><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Anal_Chem_2025_97_50_28028_28036_Figure_4_A_schematic_shows_the_potential_movement_of_carbon_through_the_synthesis_process_d7f19cad54.jpg" alt="Anal. Conclusion</strong></h4><p>Our method utilizes the Orbitrap-IRMS method for the stable isotopic analysis of carbon in PFAS compounds in environmentally relevant quantities. Isotopic characterization of PFOA fragments allows for measurements of intramolecular stable carbon isotope ratios, increasing forensic resolving power. Future work should evaluate the impact of multi-isotopic measurements on source attribution potential─incorporating oxygen isotope ratio measurements in addition to carbon to better distinguish between samples. Further, continuing to develop analyses for smaller fragments of PFOA to better understand the intramolecular isotopic composition of the compound would allow for improved differentiation between different sources. Given the vast array of PFAS compounds currently dispersed throughout the environment, extending Orbitrap-IRMS measurements to other congeners would allow for broader applicability of this method to sites not containing PFOA and improved resolution of PFAS sources from environmental samples. An Orbitrap-IRMS analysis of PFOA consumes ∼50 ng of PFOA per analysis. Median concentrations of PFOA in contaminated soils are between 38 and 83 ng g<sup>–1</sup>, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(48)</a> which would enable an Orbitrap-IRMS analysis via extraction of PFOA from 1 g of soil. In drinking water, where the current EPA maximum contaminant limits (MCL) are set to 4 ng L<sup>–1</sup> for PFOA, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(49)</a> a sample of water at this level or higher would require 12.5 L to isolate enough PFOA for an Orbitrap-IRMS analysis (assuming 100% extraction recovery). This demonstrates a feasible approach compared to EA-IRMS, which would require complete extraction of PFOA from 12,000 to 26,000 g of soil for one replicate analysis or 250,000 L of contaminated water with PFOA at 4 ng L<sup>–1</sup> MCL. This Orbitrap-IRMS method lays a foundation for extending current stable isotopic methodologies of environmental contaminants─such as for source attribution and remediation monitoring─to PFAS compounds.</p>

However, an analytical challenge derives from their structural or empirical similarity and the presence of potential isobaric interferences.&nbsp;</p><p>Isobaric compounds are molecules that are empirically identical, share the same nominal mass, but differ in structure. In the context of THC analysis, CBD and exo-THC are notable isobaric interferences. These compounds can coelute or produce overlapping mass spectral signals, complicating the interpretation of results. CBD, a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid, shares an identical molecular weight and similar fragmentation pattern with THC isomers, making it difficult to distinguish using conventional mass spectrometry alone. Exo-THC, another structural analog, further adds to the complexity for the same reasons.&nbsp;</p><p>Without adequate chromatographic separation, these isobaric interferences can lead to false positives or inaccurate quantitation. This is particularly problematic in forensic settings, where precise identification of psychoactive substances is critical. Therefore, a robust analytical method that can resolve these compounds and potential interferents is&nbsp;desirable.&nbsp;</p><p>This study introduces a workflow that combines enhanced matrix removal (EMR) with LC/MS/MS to achieve baseline separation of THC isomers and their metabolites from the isobaric interferences that were examined within the scope of this application note. The method enables confident separation, identification, and quantification in a single 15-minute analysis.</p><h4><strong>Experimental</strong></h4><h5><strong>Chromatographic separation and LC/MS/MS detection&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>This procedure can be accomplished using different instrument configurations. Chromatographic separation was verified using both an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=1260+Infinity+II+LC"><strong>Agilent 1260 Infinity II LC</strong></a> and an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=1290+Infinity+II+LC"><strong>Agilent&nbsp;1290 Infinity II LC</strong></a>. Analyte detection and quantitation were performed via both an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=6475"><strong>Agilent 6475 triple quadrupole LC/MS</strong></a> and an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Ultivo"><strong>Agilent&nbsp;Ultivo triple quadrupole LC/MS</strong></a>. Method&nbsp;parameters are detailed in Tables 1 and 2. Detailed MRM transition settings are outlined in Appendix A.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This study presents an effective, integrated workflow for the separation and quantification of THC isomers and metabolites in whole blood. Agilent&nbsp;Captiva EMR–Lipid cartridges removed sufficient matrix interferences to enable clean extraction and high analyte recovery. Chromatographic separation using an Agilent InfinityLab Poroshell 120 PFP column provided reliable resolution of isobaric compounds, including CBD and exo-THC. Coupled with Agilent LC/MS/MS systems featuring Agilent Jet Stream ionization technology, the method delivered consistent sensitivity and selectivity across a complex panel of analytes. Together, this methodology offers the basis of a streamlined workflow for the separation of Δ8-, Δ9-, and Δ10-THC isomers and their respective hydroxy and carboxy metabolites and potential interferents from whole blood.</p><h3><strong>2. Shimadzu: Optimization of Supercritical Fluid Extraction Parameters for Vitamins D2, D3, and K1 from Pharmaceutical Preparations</strong></h3><ul><li>Technical note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/c190_e333_6198eb84b9.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Vitamins are organic compounds, essential in small amount, crucial for the normal functioning of the human body, facilitating numerous enzymatic and metabolic functions[1]. Since the human organism cannot produce vitamins, the diet represents the main route of ingestion of these compounds. As consumer awareness grows, reliable information about the vitamin content in foods is becoming a critical issue. However, considering that vitamins could be losses during food processing and storage, the readyto-use multi-vitamin pharmaceutical preparations are becoming widely employed among consumers. These facts, together with the introduction of labelling regulations, introduced the need for ensure the quality control of these types of formulation.</p><h4><strong>2. Experimental</strong></h4><h5><strong>2.3 Instrumentation</strong></h5><p>The supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was carried out by using a SFE pretreatment system (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Nexera+UC"><strong>Shimadzu Nexera UC</strong></a>) equipped with: a CBM-40 controller, an SFE-30A module, an LC-30ADSF CO2 pump, an LC-40D XR modifier pump, an LC-40D make-up pump, an SFC-30A back pressure regulator, a DGU-40 on-line degasser, an FRC-40 fraction collector. A combination of static and dynamic extraction was employed (Figure 2).</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Considering the obtained results, the vitamins extraction revealed as strictly matrix dependent, according to the formulation excipients. Therefore, detailed study needs to be performed to better understand the vitamin formulation.</p><h3><strong>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific / MSACL: Simultaneous quantitation and discovery (SQUAD) of fecal bile acids and their conjugates in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)</strong></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/po_squad_fecal_bile_acids_children_asd_po_en_af787058d3.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>This study presents a <strong>Simultaneous Quantitation and Discovery (SQUAD)</strong> metabolomics workflow applied to the analysis of <strong>fecal bile acids and their microbial conjugates</strong> in children with <strong>Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)</strong> undergoing <strong>microbiota transfer therapy (MTT)</strong>. Bile acids play a key role in lipid metabolism and gut–brain signaling, and alterations in gut microbiota composition in ASD have been linked to disrupted bile acid metabolism. The SQUAD approach was designed to address the need for both <strong>targeted quantification</strong> of known bile acids and <strong>untargeted discovery</strong> of novel metabolic features within a single LC–MS injection.</p><p>The workflow integrates <strong>reversed-phase liquid chromatography</strong> with advanced mass spectrometry using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/748"><strong>Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Ascend Tribrid mass spectrometer</strong></a> coupled to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/744"><strong>Thermo Scientific Vanquish Horizon UHPLC system</strong></a>. Quantitative analysis was performed using <strong>parallel reaction monitoring (PRM)</strong> in the <strong>linear ion trap</strong>, while <strong>high-resolution MS¹ scanning in the Orbitrap</strong> enabled confident metabolite annotation. The Tribrid architecture—combining a quadrupole, linear ion trap, and Orbitrap—allowed high selectivity and sensitivity, including MSⁿ capabilities for resolving <strong>co-eluting structural isomers</strong> such as leucine- and isoleucine-conjugated bile acids.</p><p>Using calibrated bile acid standards, the method achieved <strong>absolute quantitation across six orders of magnitude</strong>, with limits of quantitation below <strong>1.8 femtomoles on column</strong>. The SQUAD workflow was applied to fecal samples collected before and after MTT, revealing <strong>distinct shifts in bile acid and lipid-related metabolite profiles</strong> following treatment. Multivariate analysis, including <strong>principal component analysis (PCA)</strong>, demonstrated clear separation between pre- and post-treatment samples in the MTT group, while no comparable changes were observed in placebo controls.</p><p>Overall, the results demonstrate that SQUAD metabolomics enables <strong>high-throughput, highly sensitive, and information-rich analysis</strong> by combining quantitative rigor with deep metabolic coverage in a single experiment. This integrated LC–MS workflow provides valuable insight into the biochemical effects of microbiome modulation in ASD and highlights the power of <strong>Orbitrap Tribrid–based metabolomics</strong> for studying complex host–microbiome interactions in clinical research.</p><h3><strong>4. Waters Corporation: Analysis of Organic Carbonates in Lithium- Ion Battery Electrolyte by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Mass Detection (MS)</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720009211_en_46cbebda90.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><h5><strong>Benefits&nbsp;</strong></h5><ul><li>Sensitive method for low-level detection and quantification of carbonate solvents (0.05–1 ppm) and carbonate-based aging products (0.00075–0.0025 ppm) in lithium-ion battery electrolyte solutions using the ACQUITY QDa II Mass Detector with SIR acquisition mode.</li><li>Robust chromatographic separation using the XSelect Premier HSS PFP Column under 7 minutes analysis time, operated under reversed-phase conditions.</li></ul><p>The electrolyte is one of the main components in the lithium-ion battery.<sup>1,2</sup> It is a conductive solution that transports lithium ions from the cathode to the anode during the charging process. During discharge, the lithium ions flow from the anode to the cathode. The electrolyte solution is composed of lithium salt dissolved in a mixture of organic solvents.<sup>1,2</sup> The organic solvents are typically a mixture of cyclic and linear carbonates, including EC, PC, DMC, EMC, and DEC.<sup>2</sup> Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF<sub>₆</sub>) is commonly used as the conducting lithium salt,<sup>2</sup> providing the necessary ionic conductivity for efficient battery operation.&nbsp;</p><p>The LiPF6 salt in carbonate-based systems can exhibit chemical and thermal instability, which can impact the performance of the lithium-ion batteries.<sup>2-4</sup> Electrolyte solutions can also degrade, forming aging products including DMDOHC and DEDOHC.<sup>2</sup> Various techniques are employed to investigate quality and properties of the electrolytes. Techniques such as scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) offer a comprehensive analysis of an electrolyte’s thermal properties, while rheology measures viscosity of the conductivity solutions.<sup>1</sup> Additionally, chromatographic methods are used to measure the quantity of carbonate solvents in electrolyte solutions.<sup>2-4</sup> Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS) are common techniques used to investigate carbonate-based electrolytes.<sup>3</sup>&nbsp;</p><p>In this application note, an HPLC method with mass detection was developed for the analysis of five common carbonate solvents and two carbonate-based aging products (Table 1). The selected columns (XSelect Premier CSH™ C18, XSelect Premier CSH Phenyl Hexyl, XSelect Premier HSS T3, XSelect Premier HSS PFP) were tested with acetonitrile and methanol solvents. The study showed that XSelect Premier HSS PFP Column with methanol provided the best retentivity and separation for all analytes (Figure 1). The method successfully separated carbonate solutions and carbonate-based aging products in less than a 7-minute gradient time. The MS total ion chromatogram (TIC) data was collected across the mass range of 35–300 Da using electrospray ionization in positive (ESI+) mode (Figure 1A). The mass spectral data facilitated quick and accurate identification of the components. The carbonate solvents formed [M + H]+ molecular ions, while the selected aging products formed sodium adducts, [M + Na]+. These ions were measured using a selected ion recording (SIR) acquisition mode, which determines intensity for a single ion of interest (Figure 1B).</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>A sensitive and reliable HPLC-MS method using the Arc Premier System coupled with the ACQUITY QDa II Mass Detector was developed for the analysis of carbonate solvents and carbonate-based aging products in lithium-ion battery electrolyte. This reversed-phase LC method successfully separated all five carbonate solvents (EC, PC, DMC, EMC, DEC) and two aging products (DMDOHC/DEDOHC) on an XSelect Premier HSS PFP Column. Low-level quantification limits were achieved using SIR acquisition mode ranging from 0.05 to 1 ppm and 0.00075–0.0025 ppm for carbonate solvents and aging products, respectively. The method was demonstrated to be applicable for the analysis of lithium-ion battery electrolyte.</p>

This challenge is particularly relevant for the precious metals industry, where the stoichiometric composition and purity of metal alloys define both product quality and commercial value. A technique for high-precision measurements developed specifically for the precious metals industry is standard bracketing. As described in ISO methods 11494 and 11495 for ICP-OES analysis,<sup>1,2</sup> this technique employs standard–sample–standard sequencing, which improves control over instrumental fluctuations and matrix effects, ensuring high levels of accuracy and precision.</p><p>Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) is a powerful technique that is often used to analyze trace impurities in a broad range of samples. Both the Agilent 5800 and 5900 ICP-OES instruments are inherently precise, as discussed elsewhere.<sup>3</sup> However, precision is further improved when the instruments are operated with the ISO-compliant standard bracketing feature within the Agilent ICP Expert Pro software version 7.8 onwards. The software provides additional useful features for jewelry assaying, catalyst refining, and material recycling. These functions include built-in automated result summarization, reporting in fineness (‰), karat (k), or concentration units, and processing tools specifically for determining major components and purity analysis. Standard bracketing is also applicable to other demanding applications, such as semiconductors, fertilizers, and the emerging battery materials sector.&nbsp;</p><p>In this study, the Agilent 5800 Vertical Dual View (VDV) ICP-OES with Agilent SPS 4 autosampler and ICP Expert 7.8 Pro software4 was used to determine the purity of gold (Au), palladium (Pd), and platinum (Pt) in three precious metal alloys. The analytical procedure was in accordance with ISO methods 11494 and 11495.</p><h4><strong>Experimental&nbsp;</strong></h4><h5><strong>Instrumentation&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=5800+VDV+ICP-OES"><strong>Agilent 5800 VDV ICP-OES</strong></a> was configured with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=SPS+4+autosampler"><strong>Agilent SPS 4 autosampler</strong></a>, which provided automated sample delivery to the instrument (Figure 1). The 5800 ICP-OES was equipped with a SeaSpray nebulizer, double-pass cyclonic spray chamber, and Agilent one-piece VDV torch with a 1.8 mm internal diameter (id) injector. All components were controlled by Agilent ICP Expert Pro* 7.8 software. Instrument operating parameters are listed in Table 1.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This application demonstrates the effectiveness of highprecision standard bracketing calibration for the quantification of major components in gold, palladium, and platinum alloys using the Agilent 5800 VDV ICP-OES.&nbsp;</p><p>By employing gravimetrically prepared standards and integrating internal standard correction, the method improves analytical precision (RSD) more than threefold compared to conventional external calibration. It also reduces sample-tosample fluctuations, resulting in a 400× improvement in RPD values between duplicate measurements.&nbsp;</p><p>The high precision and reproducibility of the standard bracketing method enable accurate assaying of precious‑metal samples, making it ideal for quality control of high‑value materials where composition control is often required within ±0.1%.&nbsp;</p><p>The latest version of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=+ICP+Expert+Pro+software"><strong>Agilent ICP Expert Pro software</strong></a> facilitates the standard bracketing method and includes tools for in-worksheet calculations and custom result displays. This approach simplifies metal-alloy purity testing, enables direct interpretation of sample purity in industry-standard terms, and provides confident, traceable quantification in accordance with ISO methods.&nbsp;</p><p>The method is useful in other applications that require tight composition control, such as battery materials, catalysts, semiconductors, and fertilizers.</p><h3><strong>2. Metrohm: Biodiesel content in diesel with nearinfrared spectroscopy</strong></h3><p><strong>Monitor the fuel blending process within seconds</strong></p><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_126_download_800056c376.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>The properties of biodiesel fuel, which is produced from vegetable oils or animal fat, are very similar to petroleum-derived diesel, but biodiesel pollutes less. In most countries the common biodiesel blend is B20, which ranges from 6% to 20% biodiesel content. Measuring the biodiesel content in diesel is important, as higher levels can cause deposits in older diesel engines, clogging the fuel filters and pumps. Fuels with high levels of biodiesel also tend to absorb more moisture compared to petroleum-derived fuels. With near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), the biodiesel content is determined in seconds without any sample preparation. Compared to other test methods like those used in ASTM D7467, biodiesel content analysis with NIR spectroscopy saves time and enables the implementation of online process monitoring with fiber optics.</p><h4><strong>EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Twenty-one diesel samples with varying biodiesel content from 0% to 20% were measured on the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=OMNIS+NIR"><strong>OMNIS NIR Analyzer</strong></a> Liquid (Figure 1) in transmission mode (1000–2250 nm) using 8 mm disposable vials. The vial temperature was set and monitored at 30 °C with the built-in vial sensor to ensure consistent measurement performance. OMNIS Software was used for all data acquisition and prediction model development.</p><h4><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></h4><p>This Application Note shows the results of a biodiesel content analysis test without the need for any sample preparation, using near-infrared spectroscopy in place of other more time-intensive analytical techniques. This ultimately leads to a reduction in workload and the related costs. Alongside the biodiesel content test, additional fuel quality parameters like cetane number, moisture, or flash point can be determined with NIRS.</p><h3><strong>3. Although colorimetric methods have been used for these analyses, there is a growing need for trace control due to tighter regulations in recent years, leading to a consideration of a shift to instrumental methods that enable quantification. Candidates for instrumental methods include ICP optical emission spectrometry/mass spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. While the former method is highly sensitive, powder and solid samples need to be dissolved in an acid such as nitric acid or hydrochloric acid. In contrast, X-ray fluorescence analysis is convenient because it can be analyzed without dissolving the sample.&nbsp;</p><p>This application news introduces the analysis of two inorganic oxide powders (talc and titanium oxide) using the energydispersive <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ALTRACE"><strong>X-ray fluorescence Spectrometer ALTRACE</strong></a> (Fig. 1).</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This application news reports on the quantitative analysis of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) in two types of inorganic oxide powders: talc and titanium oxide. The analysis was performed using the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer ALTRACE, which allows for the analysis of powders without dissolving them. ALTRACE enables simultaneous analysis of Pb and As, unlike traditional colorimetric methods that test them separately. Additionally, ALTRACE can analyze 48 samples continuously, significantly improving the efficiency of the testing process.</p><h3><strong>4. XPS is unique in that it can quantify the elemental and chemical composition of a material’s surface with extreme selectivity, since the typical information depth of XPS being less than 10 nanometers.&nbsp;</p><p>Raman spectroscopy is utilized in many similar application areas as it requires little sample preparation, is nondestructive, provides information on molecular structure, and enables users to identify materials quickly, thanks to extensive spectral libraries.&nbsp;</p><p>The implementation of XPS and Raman with other analysis techniques is well established; XPS has a long history of complementary use with related ultra-high vacuum (UHV) analysis techniques, such as UV photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and ion scattering spectroscopy. In these cases, additional equipment is added to the spectrometer to give coincident, complementary information.</p><p>To overcome these problems, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=3&amp;search=ARXPS"><strong>Thermo Scientific™ Theta Probe Angle-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (ARXPS) System</strong></a> has been integrated with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2238"><strong>Thermo Scientific iXR™ DXR3 Flex Raman Spectrometer</strong></a> to provide a multimodal analysis platform. The system aligns the XPS analysis position exactly with the Raman analysis position, ensuring that the data is collected from the same position.&nbsp;</p><p>The coincident XPS-Raman removes any requirement to transfer the sample from one instrument to the next between analyses, minimizing additional sample handling and exposure to different conditions that can lead to sample contamination or degradation.</p><h4><strong>Summary&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>In conclusion, XPS is used for quantitative determination of both elemental and chemical composition for any solid material compatible with UHV analysis, whereas Raman spectroscopy is used for identification of referenced compounds by careful spectral matching that searches algorithms and spectral databases. The combination of XPS and Raman spectroscopy on the DXR3 Flex Raman Spectrometer integrated with the Theta Probe ARXPS System, allows more powerful analysis of a material than either technique in isolation, with the cleanliness, purity and stoichiometry of a sample determined using XPS, and identification and quantification of molecular structures determined using Raman spectroscopy. As both techniques are aligned to the same position within the vacuum system, all the time-consuming aspects of locating the same analysis point when transferring between instruments is removed, giving absolutely certainty that all the information acquired has come from the same region of sample, which is particularly useful when studying nonuniform samples.</p>
