Agilent Technologies: Improving Resolution of Single Nanoparticles Using ICP-MS and Shorter Dwell Times</strong></h3><p><strong>Advantages of a 50 µs dwell time on a single nanoparticle’s signal profile&nbsp;</strong></p><ul><li>Technical note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/te_single_nanoparticle_9500_icp_qqq_5994_9127en_agilent_e47e21c8b4.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Single nanoparticles (sNPs) are defined as particles with diameters below 100&nbsp;nm. Owing to their distinct physical and chemical properties, engineered nanoparticles are incorporated into a wide range of products to enhance performance or functionality. At the same time, they are increasingly recognized as potential contaminants or pollutants. In the semiconductor industry, for example, even single-digit nanometer-sized sNPs present in process chemicals can cause electrical shorting to occur and reduce product yield. Although the effects of sNPs on environmental and biological systems are still being investigated, researchers have developed methods to determine sNPs using single particle-ICP-MS (spICP-MS).<sup>1</sup> Agilent ICP-MS instruments are widely used to characterize sNPs because of their fast-scanning multi-element capability, ultra-high sensitivity, low background, and integrated data analysis software.<sup>2-5</sup></p><p>sNPs are decomposed, atomized, and ionized in the high-energy ICP. Any ions that are generated from a particle enter the vacuum chamber as ion clusters and are then detected as transient signal peaks above the background signal. The signal from each sNP event usually lasts between 400 and 1,300 µs. To detect this short-lived signal with high resolution, a fast time-resolved analysis (fast-TRA) acquisition is employed. Typically, a default dwell time of 100 µs is used. However, if higher peak resolution is required, the Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) can be operated with a dwell time as low as 50 µs. During the development of the 9500 ICP-QQQ, improvements to the instrument’s hardware enabled reliable control of TRA at much shorter timing intervals. These enhancements enable the 9500 to operate with high stability at a 50&nbsp;µs dwell time, making it an effective instrument for high-resolution sNP analysis. The robust plasma of Agilent ICP-MS instruments, as indicated by a CeO+ /Ce+ ratio &lt; 1%, also reduces matrix effects between standards and samples.&nbsp;</p><p>In this study, we conducted a fundamental evaluation of sNP analysis using a dwell time of 50 µs. Gold (Au), silica (SiO2 ), and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles were analyzed by the 9500 ICP-QQQ, and the results were compared with those obtained with a 100 µs dwell time.</p><h4><strong>Experimental&nbsp;</strong></h4><h5><strong>Instrumentation&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=+9500+ICP-QQQ"><strong>Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</strong></a> used the standard configuration (Ni cones and u-lens), except for the torch. A quartz torch with a 1.5 mm inner diameter (id) injector was used to minimize diffusion of ion clusters in the ICP and obtain sharper, better-resolved peaks.&nbsp;</p><p>Multi-element NP data acquisition and analysis were carried out using the Rapid Multi-Element Nanoparticle Analysis mode of the optional Single Nanoparticle Application Module for the Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software. In Rapid MultiElement Nanoparticle Analysis mode, multi-element data are collected sequentially from a single sample acquisition, and all data are combined into a single file. This method saves time, as only one sample uptake and rinse are needed for all analytes. Data quality is likely enhanced, since the risk of sample contamination is considerably lower with a single analysis than with multiple separate analyses.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>For high-resolution nanoparticle analysis, the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ can be operated in single-particle mode with a 50 µs dwell time, as well as the default 100&nbsp;µs setting. The reduction of dwell time is enabled by advancements in both hardware and software that work together to support higher-resolution single-nanoparticle measurements.&nbsp;</p><p>Improved peak resolution was demonstrated for Au, SiO2 , and Pt nanoparticles, while maintaining equivalent performance to the standard 100&nbsp;µs dwell time setting. The mean particle sizes obtained at 50&nbsp;µs for the nanoparticle suspensions were within the manufacturer’s certified ranges. Likewise, the particle size distributions measured at both 50 and 100&nbsp;µs closely matched the distributions provided by the manufacturer.&nbsp;</p><p>In addition to improved peak resolution, a shorter dwell time reduces the likelihood of multiple particles being detected within a single dwell period, potentially improving data accuracy.&nbsp;</p><p>Since the total data volume increases inversely with dwell time, a 50 µs dwell time generates more data points per unit time. To reduce processing time when handling large datasets, Agilent ICP-MS software (both ICP-MS MassHunter and OpenLab ICP-MS) uses multithreaded CPU‑based computation for sNP data analysis, maintaining efficient data management.</p><p>Although 50&nbsp;µs may not be necessary for many sNP analyses, having the option to use this shorter dwell time provides greater flexibility. For example, it could enable samples with unexpectedly high particle counts to be analyzed without needing additional dilution.</p><h3><strong>2. Shimadzu: 3D-DIC Analysis in Compression Test of Glass Tube</strong></h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_01052_en_fd73dc76a6.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><h4><strong>User Benefits</strong></h4><ul><li>The HPV-X3 high-speed video camera has resolution three times higher than the conventional device, resulting in improved analysis performance in DIC analyses.</li><li>The HPV-X3 high-speed video camera allows recording at a maximum framerate of 20 Mfps, two times faster than the conventional device.</li><li>Three-dimensional displacement measurement is possible by synchronous recording using two HPV-X3 high-speed video cameras and 3D-DIC analysis.</li></ul><p>Glass is used in various industries, such as electronic devices and automobiles. Depending on the intended application, mechanical properties are measured by material testing, but to achieve further improvements in performance, it is necessary to observe the origin of fracture and the condition of crack propagation. However, glass displays brittle fracture behavior, which is difficult to observe visually. In our previous reports, we observed the fracture behavior of glass specimens in ring-on-ring tests 1, 2, and those observation results indicated that a high-speed video camera with a recording speed (framerate) of several Mfps or higher is required to observe the fracture behavior of glass. In this experiment, the fracture behavior of a glass tube during a compression test was observed with an HPV-X3 high-speed video camera. In addition, synchronous videorecording was carried out using two HPV-X3 cameras, and the strain distribution during fracture was visualized by a 3D-DIC (three-dimensional digital correlation) analysis.</p><h4><strong>Specimen Information and Measurement System</strong></h4><p>The glass tube used as the specimen was compressed in the axial direction using an AGX-V2 precision universal testing machine. Table 1 and Table 2 show the equipment configuration and the specimen dimensions, respectively. In this article, fracture observation in the compression test and visualization of the strain distribution by 3D-DIC analysis were carried out. Fig. 1 shows the condition of the test for the 3D-DIC analysis. When an observation target such as a glass tube has a curved shape, a 3- dimensional strain analysis is necessary. Therefore, synchronous recording from two directions was conducted using two<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=+HPV-X3"><strong> HPV-X3</strong></a> high-speed video cameras, with a random pattern drawn on the specimen surface, as shown in Fig. 2. Table 3 shows the recording conditions.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The fracture of a glass tube during a compression test was observed using two HPV-X3 high-speed video cameras, and a 3D-DIC analysis was carried out. In fracture observation, the crack that became the origin of fracture could be identified, and the condition of crack propagation was clearly captured. In the 3D-DIC analysis, it was possible to observe the concentration of strain in front of the crack and the decrease in strain after crack propagation. Since glass fracture is brittle and is extremely rapid, a high-speed video camera with a recording speed of 5 Mfps or higher, such as the HPV-X3, is an effective instrument for fracture observation.</p><h3><strong>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: How can you maximize productivity in lightweight metal scrap sorting?</strong></h3><ul><li>Other document</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/maximize_productivity_in_lightweight_metal_scrap_sorting_sn1546_en_2cca0f44fe.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Handheld XRF (HHXRF) has long been an important tool for sorting scrap metals. While handheld XRF can identify most grades of stainless steel, as well as titanium, nickel, cobalt, and copper alloys within 1 to 2 seconds, sorting aluminum alloys can take significantly longer. This is especially true if those alloys cannot be specifically identified by the content of their transition metals, such as manganese, copper zinc, nickel, iron chromium or titanium. The separation of grades within the AA 1000, AA 5000 and AA 6000 series, as well as casting alloy family grade separation, requires the measurement of light elements such as magnesium or silicon. Those elements are generally measured using an X-ray beam with a lower voltage, which results in longer measurements of typically 10&nbsp;seconds or more. About a decade ago, handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) emerged as an alternative for sorting aluminum and magnesium alloy grades within a few seconds. These include the smaller spot size and fluctuations related to the transient nature of the laser-induced plasma. Compared to a wider, continuous beam of X-rays, LIBS analysis is intrinsically more sensitive to surface roughness and surface contamination, and thus less precise than HHXRF.&nbsp;</p><p>More recently, the Light Metal Quick Sort (LMQS) mode available on the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1992"><strong>Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5 series of handheld XRF analyzers</strong> </a>uses a different logic than conventional HHXRF instruments. Provided with a 5W (up to 500µA) tube and a stateof-the-art silicon drift detector (SDD) with a graphene window, the analyzer starts measuring, at low voltage, elements from magnesium to zinc. This enables identification of most aluminum and magnesium alloy grades within one to three seconds, as well as the identification of other families of alloys. Longer measurements can be set for the few aluminum alloy grades that are identified based on zirconium, tin, lead, or bismuth contents.</p>

Development and validation of an analytical pyrolysis method for determination of microplastic polymers in atmospheric aerosols

<p><strong>This study presents a rapid and sensitive LC-MS/MS method for determining flibanserin in products marketed as female sexual desire enhancers. The method was fully validated according to ICH guidelines, achieving a low quantification limit and a short 5-minute analysis time. Confirmation was performed using LC-MS-IT-TOF.</strong></p><p>Analysis of commercial products revealed either the absence or only trace amounts of flibanserin, raising concerns about product authenticity, efficacy, and consumer safety. Formats and hyperlinks were adapted from the original.</strong></p><div><p>In the world, many people experience sexual problems at some point in their lives. Women are disproportionately affected due to the lack of appropriate treatments in modern medicine, leading to most of them not receiving treatment or finding an appropriate solution. The research showed that one in every 10 women in the United States has some form of sexual dysfunction. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(1)</a> Flibanserin (FLB), an active substance that can be used especially in hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), has become a source of hope for many women with this problem.</p><p>FLB was initially developed as an antidepressant; however, due to FLB’s inability to demonstrate an antidepressant effect in the experiments, participants indicated heightened sexual desire as a side effect, suggesting the potential application of this substance in the treatment of HSDD. So the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved FLB again in 2015, but this time for the treatment of HSDD instead of depression. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(2)</a> According to the data obtained from the begonia, daisy and violet studies, 12.8% of those taking FLB experienced side effects such as drowsiness, 10.6% dizziness, 9.9% nausea and 7.1% fatigue. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(3)</a> Due to these side effects, it is recommended that FLB be taken before going to bed. Also, taking FLB with alcohol was avoided due to the risk of fainting and hypotension.</p><p>Although flibanserin (FLB) is one of the few active substances approved for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder, the number of available studies remains limited, as its approval by the FDA is relatively recent. The majority of published studies have focused on pharmaceutical quality control or bioanalytical applications, predominantly employing LC–MS/MS <a href="javascript:void(0);">(4−10)</a> and HPLC <a href="javascript:void(0);">(4,11)</a> techniques. These studies have investigated a wide range of sample matrices, including natural products such as beer, grape wine, and herbal tea, as well as biological samples (e.g., plasma and brain tissue) and pharmaceutical formulations such as Veroxeserin. In contrast, a study conducted in Poland reported the presence of FLB in certain herbal products, raising concerns regarding the unauthorized use of this compound. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(7)</a> This finding prompted questions about the potential presence of FLB in products marketed as female sexual desire enhancers in the Turkish market. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine FLB in various commercially available products obtained in Türkiye to assess the presence of FLB and to characterize their contents. Notably, it was observed that some products lacked manufacturer address information, despite regulatory requirements, and that the recommended usage instructions were concerning, particularly in light of the known side effects of FLB.</p><p>This study aimed to develop and validate a sensitive and reliable LC–MS/MS method for the determination of flibanserin (FLB) in commercial products collected from the Turkish market that are marketed as female sexual desire enhancers. The samples were additionally analyzed using an LC-MS-IT-TOF instrument to support the qualitative characterization of their contents. A further objective of this work was to investigate whether FLB is being inappropriately incorporated into over-the-counter products in a manner analogous to the illicit use of sildenafil in food products or dietary supplements. By screening products predominantly obtained through online sales channels, this study sought to assess the potential unauthorized presence of FLB and to highlight possible risks to women’s health associated with such unregulated practices. As a complementary aspect, the environmental and practical performance of the proposed analytical approach was evaluated using greenness, whiteness, and blueness assessment tools, including ComplexMoGAPI, AGREE, WAC, and BAGI.</p><h4><strong>2. Experimental Section</strong></h4><h5><strong>2.2. Instrumentation</strong></h5><p>The mass spectrometric studies were succeeded in an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=8040"><strong>8040 model MS/MS</strong></a> instrument connected to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Nexera+XR"><strong>Nexera XR Series LC</strong></a> (from Shimadzu); the whole system was composed with DGU-20A3R degasser, LC-20AD gradient pump, SIL-20AC autosampler, CBM-20A communications bus module, CTO-10ASVP column oven.</p><p>The LCMS-IT-TOF series liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry instrument (Shimadzu) was used for structural characterization; the instrument consisted of the following modules: DGU-20A3 degasser, 2× LC-20AD gradient pump, SIL-20A autosampler, CTO-10ASVP column oven, CBM-20A communication module, and ion-trap and time-of-flight (IT-TOF) mass spectrometer. LCMS Solutions 3.80 software was used for setting instrumental parameters and spectrum integration.</p><h4><strong>3. Result and Discussion</strong></h4><h5><strong>3.1. Ionization Characteristics of Flibanserin</strong></h5><p>Although the LC–MS/MS system has some financial disadvantages, its ability to detect even very low concentrations makes it a suitable system for this study. Analyses were performed to determine the ionization type, and it was determined that FLB causes positive ionization. The daughter ions and collision energy observed under multiple reaction conditions using the electrospray ionization method are given in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsomega.5c13004#tbl2">Table 2</a>. The waiting time was determined to be 100 ms. Three daughter ions were detected, 161.05, 119.05, and 133.05 <i>m</i>/<i>z</i>. Their fragmentation paths are given in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsomega.5c13004#fig1">Figure 1</a>. It is suggested that the daughter ion with the <i>m</i>/<i>z</i> value of 161.05 is fragmented by heterolytic fragmentation, the daughter ion with the <i>m</i>/<i>z</i> value of 133.05 is fragmented by heterolytic fragmentation and carbonyl release, and the ion with the <i>m</i>/<i>z</i> value of 119.05 is fragmented by McLafferty rearrangement and hydroxyl release. The product ions at <i>m</i>/<i>z</i> 161 and <i>m</i>/<i>z</i> 119 have been reported in previous studies, while the ion at <i>m</i>/<i>z</i> 133 is considered a transitional step and is formed in lower abundance than the other two. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(4,6)</a></p><p><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/ACS_Omega_2026_11_6_10828_10836_Figure_1_Fragmentation_paths_of_FLB_in_positive_electrospray_ionization_mode_79d6842698.jpeg" alt="ACS Omega 2026, 11, 6, 10828–10836: Figure 1. Comparison of the Method with Data in the Literature</strong></h5><p>The analytical methods developed for FLB analysis in the literature were summarized in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsomega.5c13004#tbl5">Table 5</a>. The methods could be divided into two parts: quality control and bioanalytical purposes. It was obvious that all the instrumentation systems used for bioanalytical analyses presented so far were LC–MS/MS. The methods developed for quality control analyses were based on analysis with HPLC and LC–MS/MS. Apart from these, there are two other high-throughput methods that were developed for various purposes. However, these two methods have significant disadvantages, such as requiring experience and mastery for routine analyses. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17,18)</a> Poplawska et al. were created to analyze both FLB and tadalafil at the same time in herbal products using an LC system along with PDA, MS, and a charged aerosol detector, just like the method that was developed. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(7)</a> They also characterized herbal preparations with LCMS-IT-TOF. Compared to their method, our method has advantages such as a working range that was approximately 100 times and LOQ was 0.5 times lower. Also, they characterized 9 compounds in herbal products with high-resolution mass spectrometry studies. Our method used high-resolution mass spectrometry to characterize all samples from 9 different market brands in detail. In addition, starting from sample collection to final analysis, the principles of less environmental harm and efficient and sustainable analytical method development were considered and evaluated with 4 different metric tools, which is another originality of the our article. Moreover, this study encourages other researchers to focus on such synthetic products and assess their impact on public health. In certain societies, these products hold a peculiar appeal: their sale remains hidden, yet their use is widespread. As a result, the table already presents a detailed comparison of all the methods developed so far. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(19)</a></p><p><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/ACS_Omega_2026_11_6_10828_10836_Table_5_Comparison_with_Previous_Studies_5e930ca443.webp" alt="ACS Omega 2026, 11, 6, 10828–10836 - Table 5. Conclusion</strong></h4><p>Due to the lack of the drug treatment for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in women and the feeling of shame or hesitation stemming from cultural reasons. People in many countries do not think about or try to seek medical help for this issue. This situation not only complicates the diagnosis of such diseases but also exposes those affected to potential harm. Many women who cannot get medical help or access treatments like flibanserin and bremelanotide, which are available in only a few countries, often seek other options. In this case, products marketed as sexual desire enhancers for women are based on taking advantage of people’s helplessness. When marketing such products, the following is stated: “If you want to make a sweet surprise for your partner without him knowing, it will be enough to drop 7–8 drops into her drink and wait for half an hour.” Beyond the fact that such statements could lead women to take these products against their will, marketing them in this way encouraging people to use them and making it seem normal is also wrong.</p><p>FLB was licensed by the United States Food and Drug Administration as the only medication for the treatment of female sexual interest/arousal disorder of any degree. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(11)</a> The current LC–MS/MS method is a novel, simple, and time-saving analytical method for the determination of FLB with a low quantification limit. The method was fully validated and used to determine FLB in samples that were bought as a solution to the treatment of female sexual desire enhancement. It has been shown that some of the products did not include content information. In addition, it has also been determined that the manufacturer’s address was present in some products while not others. As a result of the analysis, in some products had low concentration of FLB, which was not enough to make an effect. When the same samples were given to LCMS-IT-TOF to characterization, it was shown that the contents of the product did not match with that given in the lists on their boxes, and they included substances like caffeine, lactose, and citric acid, which have no effect on the disease., Finally, analyzing products like this in detail and identifying any substances that may threaten human health is an important point in terms of public health, especially considering that patients using such products do not have any other solution in Türkiye or in the other countries.</p><p>In the present study, a comprehensive screening of 15 finished products was conducted, making it one of the most extensive surveys of commercially available formulations reported in the literature to date. Owing to the nanogram-per-milliliter-level LOQ achieved with the developed LC–MS/MS method, the method offers not only a highly sensitive approach for the analysis of finished products but also a potential alternative for plasma and urine analyses in future bioanalytical applications. Furthermore, the method is distinguished by its strong ecological profile, demonstrated through multiple green analytical chemistry assessment tools, underscoring its suitability as an environmentally conscious analytical approach. Although the proposed method demonstrated favorable greenness, whiteness, and blueness characteristics, further enhancements in environmental performance may be achieved in future studies through the implementation of miniaturized or low-flow LC systems and the integration of automated sample preparation, which could reduce energy consumption and improve overall sustainability.</p><p>Overall, the analytical strategy presented herein provides a robust and versatile platform that can be effectively utilized across pharmaceutical quality control laboratories, food and dietary supplement testing facilities, and a wide range of academic research settings. This study therefore represents a valuable contribution to the field by combining comprehensive product surveillance with a highly sensitive, validated, and sustainability-oriented analytical methodology.</p></div>

Determination of Flibanserin in Female Sexual Desire Enhancer Products by LC–MS/MS and Its Confirmation by LCMS-IT-TOF

<p><strong>This study employs CE-ICP-MS to investigate the complexation of plutonium in oxidation states III–VI with gluconate at acidic pH, alongside analogous actinides including americium, thorium, neptunium, and uranium. Electrophoretic mobility measurements enabled characterization of complex formation and comparison of plutonium behavior with its redox analogues.</strong></p><p>The results showed similar complexation behavior for Pu(III), Pu(V), and Pu(VI) relative to corresponding actinides, while Pu(IV) exhibited distinct interactions involving mixed hydroxide–gluconate species. Formats and hyperlinks were adapted from the original.</strong></p><div><p>Gluconic acid is considered to be one of the most important organic ligands that could influence the mobility of radionuclides in the near field of a potential low or intermediate level nuclear waste repository. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(1)</a></p><p>Through its use as a potential cement additive, gluconate can be released during cement degradation. Several studies have already demonstrated the influence of gluconate on the retention of tri- and tetravalent actinides under conditions relevant to the nuclear waste repository. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(2−6)</a> Furthermore, large quantities of sodium gluconate were introduced at the Hanford site as part of the Manhattan project. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(7)</a></p><p>Plutonium is responsible for a large part of the radiotoxicity in spent fuels. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(8)</a> Due to the complicated redox chemistry, studies with plutonium require a high degree of redox control. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(9)</a> This is probably one of the reasons that there are only a few studies with Pu, especially at low pH values. In the literature, mainly redox-stable actinides have been investigated as analogues of Pu in different oxidation states.</p><p>Most studies regarding the influence of gluconate under repository-relevant conditions were conducted at alkaline or hyperalkaline pH values, which are expected during cement aging. Under the reductive conditions in the repository, actinides predominantly occur in the oxidation states +III and +IV. In literature, gluconate complexation has therefore mainly been investigated with Th(IV) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(3,5,10)</a> or U(IV) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(11)</a> as a representative of An(IV) and with Am(III), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(10)</a> Cm(III), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(6)</a> or Eu(III) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(10)</a> as representatives of An(III). For An(VI), the complexation of U(VI) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(12,13)</a> with gluconate was investigated. To our knowledge, no studies on the complexation of An(V) with GLU in an alkaline solution exist. The complexation of plutonium with GLU was only ever investigated for Pu(IV). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(5)</a> At high pH values, hydrolysis of An and the formation of mixed An–OH–GLU complexes occur. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(5,6,14)</a> Although the second p<i>K</i><sub>a</sub> of gluconic acid is approximately 13 ± 1, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(15)</a> metal-induced ligand deprotonation can occur in the metal complex, resulting in the abstraction of one or more of the alcohol protons at significantly lower pH values. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(14,16,17)</a> All of these effects complicate the determination of thermodynamic data.</p><p>In order to investigate mainly the binary An–GLU complexation, experiments in this work were performed at pH ≤ 4. The investigations were carried out using a combination of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and ICP-MS. In our previous work, good agreement between CE-ICP-MS and TRLFS was achieved for the Eu(III)–GLU complexation. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(14)</a></p><p>Zhang et al. systematically investigated the complexation of Nd(III), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(18)</a> Th(IV), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(7)</a> Np(V), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(19)</a> and U(VI) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17)</a> with gluconate under similar conditions to this work using a combination of potentiometry, spectrophotometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies. They described the formation of binary complexes with up to three gluconate ligands for Nd(III), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(18)</a> two for Np(V), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(19)</a> and one for U(VI). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17)</a> For Th(IV) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(7)</a> and U(VI), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17)</a> Zhang et al. proposed the formation of hydroxyl-deprotonated gluconate complexes even at low pH values.</p><p>In this work, the ability of CE-ICP-MS to measure multiple analytes simultaneously was used to confirm the desired Pu oxidation state by comparing the electrophoretic mobility with that of a redox-stable actinide. Thus, gluconate complexation was investigated for the pairs Am(III)/Pu(III) and Np(V)/Pu(V) at pH 4, U(VI)/Pu(VI) at pH 3, and Th(IV)/Pu(IV) between pH 1.3 and 2.7.</p><h4><strong>2. Experimental Section</strong></h4><h5><strong>2.3. CE-ICP-MS</strong></h5><p>All CE measurements were performed using an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7100+CE"><strong>Agilent 7100 CE system</strong></a> (Agilent, Santa Clara, California, USA) hyphenated to an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7900"><strong>Agilent 7900 ICP-MS system</strong></a> (Agilent, Santa Clara, California, USA). The coupling was realized via a MiraMist CE Nebulizer (Burgener Research, Mississauga, Canada) and a Scott-type spray chamber (AHS Analysentechnik, Tübingen, Germany). A fused silica capillary (TSP0503753, Polymicro Technologies, Phoenix, Arizona, USA) with a 50 μm inner diameter and a 50 cm length was used. A voltage of +10 kV and a pressure of 90 mbar were applied to aid the electro-osmotic flow (EOF). The temperature was kept at 25.0 ± 0.1 °C using internal air cooling of the CE device as well as a custom-built enclosure for the hyphenation.</p><h4><strong>3. Results and Discussion</strong></h4><h5><strong>3.1. Determination of Complexation Constants</strong></h5><h5><strong>3.1.1. Am(III)/Pu(III) Gluconate</strong></h5><p>The measured electrophoretic mobilities of Am(III) and Pu(III) at pH 4 as a function of the free gluconate concentration [GLU<sup>–</sup>] are shown in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.5c04403#fig3">Figure 3</a>. Both actinides exhibit a reduction in electrophoretic mobility with increasing gluconate concentration caused by the formation of An(III)–GLU complexes and, thus, a reduction in mean ionic charge. Under the experimental conditions, the electropherograms measured at low GLU concentrations were dominated by peaks of Pu(III) with a similar electrophoretic mobility as of Am(III) (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.5c04403/suppl_file/ic5c04403_si_001.pdf">Figure S7</a>, Supporting Information). With an increase in GLU concentration, peaks with neutral or negative mobilities dominated, potentially corresponding to Pu(IV)–OH–GLU species. This is the case for the 1:1 acetate complexes of Pu(III), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(29)</a> Am(III), Th(IV), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(26)</a> Np(V), U(VI), <a href="javascript:void(0);">(30)</a> and Pu(VI). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(31)</a> Ca(II) <a href="javascript:void(0);">(32)</a> was added for comparison. In <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.5c04403#fig7">Figure 7</a>, log β<sup>0</sup> is plotted against the effective charge of each metal cation, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(28)</a> exhibiting a linear trend. Ca(II), An(III), and Th(IV) show a linear trend with an increased complexation strength compared to acetate, while An(V) and An(IV) fall on the trend of acetate complexation. This was also noticed by Zhang et al. for U(VI). <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17)</a></p><p>An(V) and An(VI) are both present as actinyl moieties [AnO<sub>2</sub>]<sup>z+</sup>. Two covalently bonded oxygens are linearly arranged with the metal cation, which allows ligands to bind only in the equatorial plane. For An(III) and An(IV), gluconate is expected to form a stronger tridentate bond, <a href="javascript:void(0);">(7,14)</a> which seems to be sterically hindered for An(V) and An(VI). The similar complexation constants for the acetate and gluconate complexes of An(V) and An(VI) suggest a similar bidentate bonding motif through the carboxylic function of both acid anions. This is supported by the EXFAS measurements of U(VI)–GLU. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(17)</a> It has to be noted that Willberger et al. <a href="javascript:void(0);">(30)</a> determined a higher log β<sup>0</sup> for [Am(AcO)]<sup>2+</sup> compared to previous literature, which in turn is similar to the log β<sup>0</sup> for [Am(GLU)]<sup>2+</sup> determined in the present work.</p><h4><strong>4. Conclusions</strong></h4><p>Using the coupling between capillary electrophoresis and ICP-MS, it was possible to investigate the gluconate complexation of the major Pu oxidation states from (III) to (VI) as well as the redox stable actinides Am(III), Th(IV), Np(V), and U(VI). By addition of a redox stable actinide to the Pu sample, the oxidation state of Pu could be verified by comparing the electrophoretic mobilities. This way, the complex formation constants of three successive binary [An(GLU)<i><sub>x</sub></i>]<sup>3–</sup><i><sup>x</sup></i> (<i>x</i> = 1–3) complexes could be determined for Am(III) and Pu(III). For Np(V) and Pu(V), the complex formation constants of the first binary [AnO<sub>2</sub>(GLU)]<sub>(aq)</sub> complex were determined and those of the second [AnO<sub>2</sub>(GLU)<sub>2</sub>]<sup>−</sup> complex were estimated. For U(VI) and Pu(VI), the constants of the [AnO<sub>2</sub>(GLU)]<sup>+</sup>, [AnO<sub>2</sub>(GLU<sub>–H</sub>)]<sub>(aq)</sub>, and [AnO<sub>2</sub>(GLU<sub>–H</sub>)(GLU)]<sup>−</sup> complexes were determined. Using CE-ICP-MS, it was possible to validate/confirm previous log β<sup>0</sup> values for the complexation of the redox analogues Np(V) and U(VI), but at much lower actinide concentrations than before, i.e., at 2 × 10<sup>–7</sup> M. The corresponding complexation constants for Pu were determined for the first time.</p><p>Plutonium in the oxidation states (III), (V), and (VI) behaved very similar to the corresponding redox analogous actinides. This was not the case for Th(IV)/Pu(IV). Here, the first five binary [Th(GLU)<i><sub>x</sub></i>]<sup>4–</sup><i><sup>x</sup></i> (<i>x</i> = 1–5) complexes were determined for Th(IV), whereas mixed Pu–OH–GLU complexes were proposed for Pu. The comparison of the first complex formation constants of the An–GLU complexes suggests a different bonding motif between An<sup>3+/4+</sup> and AnO<sub>2</sub><sup>+/2+</sup>, with AnO<sub>2</sub><sup>+/2+</sup> forming the weaker complexes.</p></div>

Contaminants in recycled PET, including acetaldehyde, benzene, limonene, and bisphenol A (BPA), can migrate from the packaging into the contents, potentially affecting the safety and quality of the products stored inside.<sup>1</sup> Monitoring these contaminants is crucial for ensuring the quality of recycled PET products, as they can affect the physical, chemical, and sensory properties of recycled PET, potentially leading to product defects or health concerns.<sup>1</sup> FSSAI officially permits the use of recycled PET (rPET) in food packaging, subject to strict safety and quality standards. This regulatory change was formalized through amendments notified in March 2025, effective immediately.<sup>2</sup> All recycled plastics used in food contact applications must comply with stringent overall and specific migration limits to ensure no harmful chemical transfer into food. The recycling processes require validated decontamination steps to reduce contaminants to safe levels. Manufacturers must certify their packaging materials under FSSAI guidelines.&nbsp;</p><p>GC/MS plays a critical role in assessing the safety and suitability of recycled plastics for food‑contact applications. The method adopted in this work demonstrates the use of an Agilent 8890 GC system coupled with an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=5977C"><strong>Agilent 5977C GC/MS system</strong></a> for quantification of BPA in PET granules.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This application note presents key strategies for the analysis of BPA in PET granules using GC/MS. The calibration used here ranged from 10 to 500 ng/mL, and the LOQ of the method was demonstrated at 500 ng/g for a PET sample. Repeatable results were found for six successive replicates of matrix-based standards at 100 ng/mL. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained for the tested matrix at 500 ng/g spiked concentration levels. Thus, this study demonstrates the applicability of this method for routine analysis of PET samples for identification and quantification of BPA.</p><h3><strong>2. The pathogenic behaviors of P. aeruginosa are controlled by a cell-to-cell communication system called quorum sensing (QS). Many genes activated by QS include those responsible for forming biofilms and producing virulence factors. Interestingly, several virulence factors produced by P. aeruginosa are regulated by an interaction between a receptor, RhlR and a hydrolase, PqsE. Thus, the PqsE-RhlR interaction has become a target for antibiotic development and further characterization. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography paired with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) was chosen for metabolomic analysis as it is known for its high sensitivity and improved peak capacity. With GC×GC-TOFMS, the volatile organic compound (VOC), acetophenone, was discovered and utilized to measure dose-dependent inhibition of PqsE’s enzymatic activity in vivo by the small molecule inhibitor, Vorinostat. The purpose of E &amp; L studies is to identify and evaluate possible toxicological risks. In this study, the regulatory references aim to identify traces of potential chemical substances. These substances may be harmful to patients due to their toxicity or may impact the activity of the drug product. Hence, to ensure the safety and efficacy of the drug throughout itsshelf-life, E &amp; L studies play an important role.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>What Are Extractables and Leachables?&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>Extractables are organic and inorganic chemical entities that are released from a pharmaceutical packaging/delivery system, packaging component, or packaging material of construction into an extraction solvent under laboratory conditions[1].&nbsp;</p><p>Leachables are foreign organic and inorganic chemical entities that are present in a packaged drug product because they have leached into the packaged drug product from a packaging/delivery system, packaging component, or packaging material of construction under normal conditions of storage and use or during accelerated drug product stability studies[1].</p><h4><strong>Methods of Analysis</strong></h4><p>In this method, fifteen standards were analyzed by <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMSTQ8050+NX"><strong>GCMSTQ8050 NX</strong></a> with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=HS-20+NX"><strong>HS-20 NX</strong></a> (Trap) autosampler. For the method suitability, several important parameters like system suitability, linearity and precision were performed.&nbsp;</p><h4><strong>Conclusion</strong>&nbsp;</h4><p>The chromatographic profile of solvent reflux experiment shows higher number of extractables than aqueous incubation. Furthermore, in aqueous incubation, the content of extractables is well below the AET level. Since, placebo of the ophthalmic drug product is completely aqueous, CCP used in the analysis is totally safe and can be used for the storage of Penicillin V.&nbsp;</p><p>Shimadzu’s GCMS-TQ provides high scan speed of 20000 amu/sec with ASSP technology enabling simultaneous SCAN/MRM analysis which is crucial in E&amp;L study.&nbsp;</p><p>Generally, if the drug product falls under parenteral and oral drug product (PODP), evaluation threshold will be at higher side due to having wider SCT. However, AET for Penicillin V was at too low to evaluate with liquid injection and static headspace technique. This has been proved with the trap headspace technology.&nbsp;</p><p>To analyze the complete extractable profile with the sample screening is only possible with dynamic headspace as most of the extractables were not detected in the injection acquired with static headspace.</p><h3><strong>4. To help laboratories transition to ICP-MS for these important environmental applications, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first introduced the performance-based test Method 6020 in 2007, and revised it as Method 6020B in 2014.<sup>1</sup> Method 6020B remains widely used worldwide for the quantitative measurement of a broad range of elements, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and lead (Pb), in solid and aqueous wastes by ICP-MS.&nbsp;</p><p>Traditionally, single-quadrupole ICP-MS (SQ ICP-MS) instruments equipped with collision/reaction cells (CRCs) have been used to meet the requirements of Method 6020B for sample analysis. Laboratories have typically used a combination of acquisition strategies to control interferences, including no gas mode for interference-free analytes and low mass analytes, helium (He) collision mode for analytes affected by polyatomic ion interferences, and half-mass mode to correct doubly charged ion (M<sup>2+</sup>) interferences. This multi-mode approach has enabled laboratories to meet Method 6020B performance and quality control (QC) criteria over many years.&nbsp;</p><p>Now, for the first time, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500"><strong>Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</strong></a> featuring the Dual-Cell System (DCS) cell introduces two innovative cell gas modes, Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode.<sup>2,3</sup> These modes simplify interference removal approaches, enhance analytical performance, and accelerate analysis times</p><p>In this study, a range of environmentally certified reference materials (CRMs) was selected to represent sample types routinely analyzed in high-throughput environmental testing laboratories. As these laboratories prioritize productivity across all aspects of their operations to remain competitive, the 9500 ICP-QQQ configuration and analytical method were optimized to maximize sample throughput. The performance of the method was evaluated according to criteria set out in Method 6020B.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The study has shown that the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ, equipped with the unique Dual-Cell System (DCS) and the optional AVS&nbsp;MS discrete sampling system, is ideal for high-throughput, multi-element analysis of soil and sediment samples.&nbsp;</p><p>The use of the EPA 6020B Preset Method and selection of UHMI-4 plasma conditions in the Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software enabled rapid setup of the instrument’s operating parameters, ensuring consistent performance across operators.&nbsp;</p><p>The instrument’s matrix-tolerant plasma (low CeO/Ce ratio), UHMI, and DCS effectively addressed the challenges of analyzing high-matrix samples, including signal drift, ion suppression, and spectral interferences, thereby delivering an optimized analytical workflow.&nbsp;</p><p>The method’s productivity was enhanced by operating the DCS in Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode and by using short integration times, saving 5 to 10 s per sample. AHM replaces conventional no gas, helium (He) collision, and high energy He (HEHe) in a single mode, while Air cell mode uses oxygen from the laboratory, alleviating the need for gas cylinders. The 9500 maintains exceptionally high sensitivity in AHM and Air cell mode, minimizing background signals.&nbsp;</p><p>Overall, the 9500 ICP-QQQ with DCS achieved excellent analytical data:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Low detection limits in the low ng/L (ppt) range for most analytes.&nbsp;</li><li>Removal of M<sup>2+</sup> interferences on Ca, As, and Se generated by Sr and rare earth elements (REEs) in the soil samples using Air cell mode.&nbsp;</li><li>Recoveries of all certified elements in the five environmental CRMs or matrix spike samples within 100 ± 10%, confirming the effective control of interferences using AHM and Air cell mode.&nbsp;</li><li>Method robustness and reproducibility over more than eight hours of continuous measurements, as demonstrated by the recoveries of ISTDs and CCVs within the limits specified in EPA Method 6020.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>The 9500 ICP-QQQ with DCS and an integrated AVS MS enables high-throughput, routine analysis of complex environmental matrices. The batteries consist of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, an electrolyte, and a separator. Positive electrodes use transition metal oxides (e.g., lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide [NMC]) or lithium iron phosphate (LFP) to transfer lithium, and negative electrodes generally use graphite and, recently, high-capacity materials, such as silicon. One of the issues with lithium-ion batteries is that the positive and negative electrodes are prone to cracking. This is caused by the high pressures during manufacturing, as well as during charging and discharging. This is also thought to affect their performance, such as the cycle properties. Therefore, research is being conducted on the relationship between mechanical properties and the electrochemical performance. 1), 2) This Application News presents compression tests on various battery materials as examples of quantitative evaluations of their mechanical properties. The MCT series of microcompression testing machines can perform compression testing of minute single particles. In addition, the MCT-AD model can automatically perform extraction of measurement particles, length measurements, and test operations. This results in significant time savings and enables evaluations with a larger number of measurements.</p><h4><strong>MCT-AD Micro Compression Testing Machine&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Fig. 1 shows the MCT-AD and the measurement principle. The MCT compressed single particles placed on a lower compression plate using a flat indenter. Then, using data on diameters of the particles obtained in advance, a test forcedisplacement graph was created that measured various types of strength of the particles. The MCT-AD automatically performs selection of the measurement particles, length measurements, and cleaning of the indenter, which in the past had to be performed manually by the operator after each measurement. This enables continuous testing up to 100 times while consolidating the operation time by the operator and reducing labor.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>This Application News presents a mechanical evaluation by the MCT-AD of materials used in the electrodes of lithium-ion batteries. Traditionally, this measurement process imposes a heavy workload on operators. But since the MCT-AD automatically performs extraction of measurement particles, length measurements, and test operations, there are significant labor savings, and the need for highly skilled operators is also eliminated. The MCT-AD can also handle compression testing of samples with minute particle shapes, not just battery materials, so it is useful not only for product development but also for quality control.</p><h3><strong>3. Zn-Ni coatings offer superior corrosion resistance compared to pure zinc coatings and often replace cadmium coatings, as they provide comparable or better properties while complying with regulations such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Commonly used in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries, Zn-Ni coatings are often applied to fasteners, connectors, and structural parts exposed to corrosive environments.&nbsp;</p><p>Zn-Ni coatings typically consist of 85-93% zinc (Zn) and 7-15% nickel (Ni). The exact composition may vary depending on the application’s specific requirements. The coating process involves electroplating, which consists of immersing the metal substrate in an electrolyte solution containing zinc and nickel ions. An electric current is then passed through the solution, causing the zinc-nickel alloy to deposit onto the substrate. To ensure that specifications for coated parts are met, metal finishing companies must verify both the coating thickness and composition.</p><h4><strong>Instrumentation&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is the technology of choice for quality control of Zn-Ni plating, as it is the only analytical method that can determine the thickness and composition of the coating layer non-destructively. The use of handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (HHXRF) instruments enables near-line analyses of finished products, which can be analyzed directly without being cut and brought to a separate chamber with benchtop instruments.&nbsp;</p><p>In previous work [1], the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1992"><strong>Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5 Plus Handheld XRF Analyzer </strong></a>was demonstrated to be capable of measuring the coating weight or coating thickness of up to 4 layers of metal coatings on a substrate, using a proprietary standardless “fundamental parameters” algorithm. The layers and the substrate can be pure elements or alloys. Although the fundamental parameters algorithm can determine the thickness of Zn-Ni plating standardless, it delivers partial information, as the composition of the layer is not measured. To measure the composition and the thickness of the coatings simultaneously, another approach using empirical calibration can be deployed. The Niton XL5 Plus User Mode enables the operators to create their own calibration curves based on the measurements carried out on reference materials of Zn-Ni plated samples with known coating thickness and composition.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Performing quality control of Zn-Ni coatings is essential for metal finishers to ensure the corrosion resistance of critical parts used in the automotive and aerospace industries. The Niton XL5 Plus analyzer calibrated with user mode for this application has demonstrated its ability to deliver accurate results and numerous benefits to the metal finishing industry, including but not limited to these:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Increased productivity thanks to real-time, near-line results for faster process control and reduced rework.&nbsp;</li><li>Preservation of high-value parts due to non-destructive testing that requires no cutting or damage.&nbsp;</li><li>A lower operational burden with easy deployment and low total cost of ownership.</li></ul>
