Metabolomics experiments often face two practical challenges: capturing metabolites across the wide concentration range found in complex biological samples and balancing the different requirements of quantitative and discovery-based analysis. Low-abundance metabolites can be difficult to detect alongside highly abundant compounds, while targeted quantitation and untargeted discovery have traditionally required different analytical approaches.

Join this webinar to hear Dr. Bashar Amer share work presented at ASMS exploring how enhanced dynamic range (eDR) on the Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap™ Excedion™ Mass Spectrometer can help address these challenges. He will explain the principles behind eDR and show how extending effective MS1 dynamic range can improve the recovery and annotation of lower-abundance metabolites in complex biological samples.

Using experimental data from plasma and a diet-induced obesity mouse study, Bashar will demonstrate how eDR can increase the number of detectable compounds and acquired MS2 spectra, improve metabolite annotation, and reveal biologically relevant differences. The presentation will also introduce the SQUAD workflow, which brings targeted quantitation and untargeted metabolomics together within a single workflow.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the live Q&A following the presentation.

Presenter: Bashar Amer, PhD (Application Scientist, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Bashar Amer has a background in microbial and nutritional metabolomics as well as developing MS-based analytical assays for food studies. Bashar currently works as an Application Scientist for Thermo Fisher Scientific focusing on developing metabolomics workflows for the simultaneous quantitation and discovery analysis (SQUAD analysis) which is offering researchers a way to strike the balance between untargeted and targeted approaches in one single experiment.
